- It’s a simple questions: “Why do dogs eat their own poop?”. There are however many potential reasons which I’m going to break down for you today as well as go through my top strategies for how to stop this disgusting problem.
There are three main reasons for coprophagia in dogs (a fancy term for eating poop - their own, other dogs, cats or any other animal!).
- Medical
- Behavioral
- Nutritional
After discussing these we'll run through how to stop your dog eating poop through the use of home remedies, training and several other effective strategies.

I taught my dog to stop eating poop with one good sprinkle of cayenne pepper on his poop. He found out real quick that he doesn't like spicey poop snacks. He won't even go near it anymore. Oh and I took him to the vet and he is 100% healthy. Not a thing wrong with him. He just wanted to eat nasty poop. Well not anymore, thanks to Hot poop Delite!
Nice did u really? I'll try it
I'm gonna try it too! Dang dog baby!
@@kingofslotsmillion3263 Yes I really did. He straight up don't eat it anymore. I put him on dog vitamins with enzymes and pro biotics as well. I have been told that dogs that eat poop have an enzyme issue, so I decided to give it a try as well, just in case.
@@jeffrubinstein998 Hope it works as well for your dog as it did with mine. Good luck to you.
Yep, the hot stuff is no bueno for dogs. I had an overly licky dog and put tabasco sauce on my hands. One dose of that and it stopped.
My dog burped in my face after eating poop and I nearly threw up.
I literally just threw up reading this comment.
🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢
My Chihuahua does this. Doggy Shit burps are something you can't possibly prepare for. 🤣 He learned it from his mother as a baby. He sleeps in a large crate at night now.
its normal with puppies lol
50mL lactulose before bed. And in the morning an enema 5to10mL perkg. Add a few cube of papaya, pineapple, or pupkin to its food.
I had a dog and i got her at 2 years old and she did this so i just kept a close eye on her at toilet times and gave her plenty praise and rewards when she pooped and id pick it up straight away and over time it totally stopped. 👍🏼🐶❤
From my experience my dog will eat its poop because I feel she’s afraid of me seeing it and being corrected.
Can you try and reduce the accidents by having someone let her out to toilet more frequently or potty train her?
Rigo Rangel I agree
Yes this is right
This happens to my dog all the time
@@OurPetsHealth I never corrected her when she accidentaly pooped in the house when she was little, but now she's 3 and she never poops in house, but she still eats poop when outside (not her poop tho). Idk, maybe she picked it up from her mom. Idk what to do, I don't want to keep her on the leash while walking, but it's dangerous for her to eat poop since I have 2 nieces and I'm afraid of them getting sick.
This recently started happening it’s beyond disgusting

My dog eats all kinds of poop, but it especially loves cat poop. Then it comes in and pukes it out in the house. She's a yard dog now
I can understand why!
ur dog will get sick and die
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Nice! Poop is good for dogs, they always make disgusted faces when eating poop.
and then you let her kiss you?
My dog picked up eating it’s poop from me

My dog literally did this today I was like wtf is going on 😂😂💀.
Lol same here. He threw up it smelled HORRIBLE
MY DOG DID THAT RIGHT NOW LMFAO

I have a camera in my room and I saw him poop. I asked my GF to go to my house to see clean it but it was gone when she arrived

That was excellently presented thank you

Thanks my dog was having this issue we are going to correct her now thanks a lot :).
Teaching my dog 3 commands: leave it, drop it, let go were the most beneficial commands I've ever taught him. When I'm on a walk with him he even avoids stepping into waste (because for him leave is leave, avoid, be as far as possible, so he started treating waste as radioactive). Recently he left some suspicious bone lying next to trash can when I said leave it (I hope it wasnt human) so it can be a life saver esp when it comes to poisoned food. And remember that for your dogs it's instinct they struggle with (it's been taking a while for my dog to avoid eating waste when he's alone without me so he sometimes mistakenly touches poop or digs and forgets himself - it frozen probably smells like food - and he then comes for cleaning (so he knows he did something wrong), but sometimes comes to me with clean nose and waits for being rewarded waving tail and touching me with muzzle). Recently I thought I would also smell his nose sniffing loudly (actually if he's alone he's wearing muzzle but I want to move away from that - since it's not a solution to the core problem) and either smile and cheer or silently give him a "soft unhappy mother growl" - but still be nice to him - depending on the situation - it somehow works). After all, they know what sniff means better than us, humans, so he started realizing that, at least I believe, because I see less waste on his nose recently. Muzzle is also good to have at night when neither you or your dog know what they're touching. Also, don't overreact, from time to time just observe if he leaves the waste and say nothing until of course not too late heh (but rewarding after that is very very good, I'd say more precious than rewarding for doing that after command because you're rewarding for unspoken thus reinforcing the good way of thinking). I even reward for picking but dropping on command (that's rewarding for progress and understanding). And yes, clean after your dog. Suppose he needs to do it 2 a day. it's 60 waste units a month. So do it even for yourself so you don't walk on a minefield. Neutralize watery waste at all cost because it's full of worm eggs active for years! Either dig it out and burn it or use toilet cleaner. The earth will be poisoned for shorter time if you use biodegradable cleaners (weeks, small area) than leave the infected waste (years, large area - reinfecting).
really legit bio analysis!
I have done deworming and giving calcium to my gsd still he eats his poop when he is alone he doesn't eat the poop when someone is there. Please reply Sir
I laughed out loud when he said "nutritional"!
My dog poops when I’m not home (even if I’m out for just 30-40 mins
And eats it
I really dont know what’s causing his this behaviour
Fed up!
Saksham Rathore I hear you Shasham. Maybe you should rub his nose in it.
How do you know?
David James smelling on their breath or burps
That's the reason why I am here. My husband caught my dag, eating his poop.
Ewe!
@@hersheythebody then your husband should be more careful to where he leaves his poop ;-p
My new golden pup, 3 mo old, did this as soon as she came home. The only thing that stops her from eating it is putting on hot sauce AFTER she poops- not super useful of course. Other than having her leashed, her knowing she gets a treat as soon as she poops keeps her from turning around and eating it like she did the first week. i have a routine set where she runs inside and sits by a treat jar for going poop outside, so I can quickly close the door after to prevent her from going back. The other thing is keeping her on a leash when I suspect she is going to poop! Annoying, but since dogs have a rhythm and most have signs they need to poop (opposed to pee), you can use apps or just simple paper and pen to track when your dogs eats, poops, and pees for a few days and you will be able to see a pattern. Then you are hopefully only leashing up twice a day for poops and the dog can be let out freely the rest of the time.
Another thing that a lot of people don't seem to utilize is a CRATE. Crates, properly sized so it isn't too big, will prevent dogs from going unless they are sick. It is a great place to put the dog so they can't sneak off and poop somewhere in the house. It hasn't been mentioned, but putting down food only for 15 minutes so you can time when they are going to have to poop and leash them to prevent them from spinning around and eating it. Free feeding makes it very hard to know when your dog ate and therefore when they need to poop.
I am still looking for what to add to my dogs' diet that will make her not like it so I can stop having to worry about it, but until then crating, timing, treats, and a leash are preventing her from eating poop. The only time she has tried was when I got sloppy and hadn't leashed her- once she starts eating, she won't respond to you calling so I had to physically remove her.
Why do my dogs insist on pooping in the basement whenever they are in it? They'll poop outside or inside upstairs, if they "have to", but almost always go in the basement within a couple minutes of being their.
wow! thank you for sharing these tips, my dog tomee has been doing this in our backuard, and his breath ends up stinking really bad and my daughter veeks has been complaining whenever she tongue kisses our dog.
That's a good idea about picking it up thanks. I've been putting small electrodes in the stools so he gets a small shock when he goes to eat it. It works but quite expensive and laborious
I invented an AI that lives in a small microchip in his collar. It scans his enviomrnemt for poops using machine vision and then when he sees a poop it whispers "PetCore" three times
@@BenDennis1 ahhh yes, please tell me how
@ryan skeffers could you please tell me where did you get those electrodes and how to set up?? Thanks
Brilliant lol
Thank you so much 👌😊
My dog doesn’t mess around. He eats it as soon as it hits the ground. I can’t get over there quick enough to beat him to it.
Same with mine 😩😩😩
So what did y’all do? I have the same problem
I just learned that this is not a great idea to watch while eating breakfast
My dog has just started this at 2 years old. After a check up with our vet he said at times it's because of boredom. I don't understand this at all since I give my dog walks at least 3 times a day, we play in the yard several times a day and we also bring him to work with us - we are self employed and can either work from home or we also have a warehouse in town. We have 10 employees who talk with him throughout the day, occasionally play fetch in our warehouse and he has a doggie bed in our office both in the warehouse and at home. He even has a special spot on the couch at work. He gets doggie dates as well every couple weeks. I used to leave his poop in the yard picking it up after a day or two, counting them out to 2 or 3 poops a day but when I noticed him eating it one day I now go out with him each and every time, if I'm not right there he tries to eat it right after pooping! OMG. I try to divert his attention, asking him Where's your toy? or Treat! since my Vet said Do not yell at him, just divert him. After two weeks, this is not working so I may take him back to the vet to make sure it's not something medical.... sigh - Any other suggestions to whoever is watching that actually worked? I'm also giving him pumpkin with his meals. I read this may make his poop taste bad but he seems to like it just as much. Yikes.
Yell at him. Your vet is a pansy. If your child was eating poop, I can guarantee you would get on his case for this!
What about when you try to pick it up and the dog attacks you because it wants to eat it? The dog will eat it soon as it leaves her body, there is no chance to pick it up. She knows the command, leave it, but ignores the command in regards to poop.
she should be on leash. redirect her immediately onto a valuable treat while making enough space she isnt trying to go back and eat it. work on leave it from a distance she will listen to the leave it command. scatter treats to keep her distracted so you can pick it up
Muzzle
Get it put down.
Y'all dog owners don't even realize that you're owning an unnatural mutant creature that eat it's own poop, piss and puke.
That’s some dedication from your dog 🐶 who attacks you because he wants to eat the poop.
I walk a dog whos nearly 15 yrs old. From when i started i noticed he would eat deer & kangaroo poo. Ive been wondering about that. Thanx :)
The “just clean it up” advice doesn’t really help for animals who are “just being helpful.” I found my doggy started eating poop when I began having trouble opening the poop bags. I have ALWAYS followed behind him and picked up the poo immediately. But a lot of times he poos and turns around to eat it right away before I can even get it. It’s especially hard when he poos in fall leaves and I can’t find it. The best way to find it is often to follow his nose. 🤦🏻♀️
What the fuck
Lol
It's relatable
give the mutt 50mL of lactulose syrup. after about 30 min repeat and take it outside, and then give them a warm saline enema, based on 10mL per kg of weight. Let them EMPTY themselves, see if they will want to eat THAT... When they are empty, feed them some healthy probiotica and healthy food, which of daily pieces of pineapple and papaya, not something that make them shit yellow... and the leave it? put some chopped chili and rawit peppers mixed with a spoon of ipecac syrup on their crap: have this ready in a squeeze bottle and hop on the crap... let's see if they eat this ONCE if they will want to try again!
@@wristlock3596 I mean, it’s what dogs do! I assume you don’t have a dog
My little puppy does this. Sometimes she does and sometimes she doesn’t.
We got a very bad free dog offline...he was so bad he's gotten much better, but he still eats his poop, and it grosses me out. I believe he used to get in trouble for pooping in the home...he used to have accidents in house, but he also had worms really bad when we first got him..he also cowers down like someone has hit him.....I got him at 6 months, it didn't take them people long to mess that poor dog up.
Kinda hard to go pick up their waste every time during freezing temperatures from Canada
What about pumpkin? Also he pooped in his food bowl today!!! I don't know what is going on with him. I think he is upset when I go to work but my husband is home with him most of the time....
I do get his just clean it up point, especially if your doing the hot sauce thing, but I let my dog into the front garden, as I live in Ireland and we have walls all around the front and backyard, close the gates and let him do his business while I make some tea at the window so I can see him, I see him pooping, put a teabag into my cup, look back up and he’s eating the shit he’s just had, but not the one he had last night, and it’s such an irregular occurrence and he tried eating the same cat poop, just after being disciplined for the first one, so I brought him in and he went on time out, but there is so many different random reasons that I’m just more confused now
I like how he said it really doesn't harm your dog but if I walk in one more time from my lab throwing up all over the floor because he ate a belly full of dogshit we're gonna have some problems. Ugh it's so nasty 🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮
😂
Our 5 month old did it when we got her and we got her to stop for a month or 2. She would hunt for rabbit 💩 in the yard sometimes after tho. She just started back this week but it seems she only does it if she has to go out but no one is paying attention to let her out. So it’s like she is trying to hide the evidence. She only eats it right after she does it when she does.
omg thank you he keeps eating it!!
Thank You from Tennessee . DQ
I have two 5 month old corgis. I have my routine where I wake up and I need to use the bathroom first thing in the morning. My bladder knows I’m up so it’s time to go. I can’t help it. Sometimes I just hold it in hoping that the girls poop before I go do my morning routine so I can just clean it up and won’t have to worry about them eating it. But they literally wait for the moment where I step outside my room to poop! And then eat it! Sure I can wake up and walk them, but I’m not leaving my apartment without brushing my teeth at least. I feel like I should at least be able to do that without them pooping and eating it. I don’t see why they would be scared to poop in front of me because when they do something wrong, I ignore them and clean it up. Not even punish them. . . Anyways Im feeling kind of helpless and don’t know what to do. I’ve had a dog before and never had this problem.
Damn you fine asf but that's Nasty asf I hope they aint picc that up from they mamma
I never seen my dog actually eat her poop but her breath is SO BAD ALL THE TIME like poop it’s terrible and she doesn’t let me brush her teeth and I’ve used the meat tenderizer before but idk if it worked yet
My puppy is doing this and shes fast at it! - Ive been to the vets lots with her due to vaginitis... We couldn't get rid of it.. turns out she's eating hers and licking herself.... not fun! - very stressful.
I have a new 2.1/2 months olde english bulldog puppy. I always clean after her but at night, she sleeps on her crate with the door open to a dog play pen where I leave a couple pee pads. She usually poops twice at night and its hard to wake up every so often to take her out in the mid of the night. Through the camera I've caught that she is eating her poop. I've increased her food thinking that she could be underfed despite using a bit more of the recommended by the food company for her age/weight. Just bought the meat tenderizer now. I'm trying to find out what else I could do.
By the way, I never correct her when she poops, always praise, even if at home in the peedpad. She mostly poop when I take her out and rarely an accident at home except overnight that she goes on the peepad.
My old dog Duke who died used to do it and we had to put him on medication for it. I noticed that my new dog Astro his breath was really stinking. I had his teeth cleaned and the very next day it starting stinking even worst. I just caught him eating his own poop like a couple minutes ago
Did your dog stop eating his poop ?

I will eat your waste

wish certain unfavorable humans (aka our bosses) are starting to eat some of our waste and we can just say..."go right ahead hot shot"....LOL
My puppy eats everything she sees like coal, poo and even her vomit
My issue is that my puppy is a toy size chihuahua and while it’s very easy to clean up during the day, at night he is kenneled and sometimes has a bowel movement and that’s when he eats his poop!!
My puppy is doing the same, have you found any fixes?
My exact problem 😒 🙄
My dog likes to eat fox poo on walks or in the garden, what would be the best way to stop her doing this other than the "leave it" command? Shes a rescue from Macedonia and hardly knows her name yet!
My 5mnth old German Shepard puppy keeps bringing us his poop if he sneaks off into the kitchen does one and brings it back into the living room where we are and places it down on the carpet why is this? Does he think he’s bringing us a present?
Basically his advice is clear up after the dog. Don’t let him eat it. Yes we know that but what if your dog spins round so fast that he gets to it before you? And why is my dog only eating it at home? When we’re out he ignores it completely.
My Siberian husky started doing this how do I stop it
well the big problem is when you get suprised with a poop on the road or in the field. and suddenly he starts to eat it.
My dog doesn't eat it. She just chews it like bubblegum and spits it out somewhere else.

My 14 week old corgi puppy eats his poop and then throws up sometimes. I clean up after him very often but overnight he will go in his crate. Which food do you recommend for his nutrition?
A complete and balanced puppy diet. I've got a video coming out on this topic soon, for now though here is a playlist with all the videos I've done about what to feed a pet - ua-cam.com/play/PLNiiJwzsRMiSE5ryaF1I3EbQh_luIpEVW.html
I’m feeding my puppies Blue Buffalo, it’s expensive and it supposed to be all good quality but, they still eat their poop! Go figure!
Snail bait.
hot sauce on the waste ahhahahahah funny loved it
I had a Border Collie Aussie mix that began to eat cat poop eagerly when he was about 2 yrs old. There was plenty of it outside due to farm cats and strays .He would get sick every time and barf it up inside my house. It was soooo nasty! My solution was watch him like a hawk and catch him in the act, then chase him down and beat his a$$. It worked, after several caught in the act events over a few months. He finally stopped and never did it again for the rest of his life. He lived to be 12yrs old and was actually a very smart and well behaved boy, aside from the poop eating! 😝
We got our dog pumpkin flavored treats from Wegmans (Wegmans Nature Natural Dog Treats, crunchy pumpkin flavor) and since we started giving her these treats she seems like she is not finding her poop as appetizing as before, I also call her right after she poops and she comes to get a treat. I have a serious back problem so I cannot easily bend over to pick up the dog waste which is left outside in our yard so I have to wait for someone else to do it when they come home at night after work. I only pick up the dog poop if she does it in the house. She used to eat it right off the floor if I didn't catch her in time.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing your experience
Oh yeah well when they get into extreme ages and still do this idk I think that's what caused w\e it is my dog lil yorkie barker had done that a lot before they ended up i guess having a mini stroke or something cuz they got severe vertigo ever since that day and the last thing that they ate before that moment was they own poo so I'm like idk if it's safe as we think there are many reasons we don't do this i imagine it could cause issues if we did anyway so how do i get my new dog to stop(i wasn't going to even get a new dog n just be with my 3 cats well we had 2 dogs them 1 died now last of the small ones is on his last leg poor things gonna go any day now sadly but he's like 26 maybe 27yr old in ppl time so like 100s in dog years and we just gotta new 2yr old German Shepard who u know how they steal ur heart but she's very well trained and behave so it isn't as hard just larger much were trying to socialize them with the cats i guess that'll take at least a month lol. But if we never do it then they'll never get along so gotta rip the band aid off
it is literally impossible to pick up all crap when my puppy poops. I pick up right away when i can but i am at work most of the day so i cant be with him 100% of the time. The MSG didn’t work. i will try tobacco or cayenne pepper like others mentioned
Well my dog just now eat human poop what do I do. Do I Make a poop it out or puke it aut
My baby brother had a massive dump and it spilled a little, when i was done cleaning him up i was going to clean the spill, when i came back just moments after i saw my dog licking the horrivle spill with its tongue, after that it hid under my family bed

My dog growing up used to love rolling in fox poo 😒
Maybe dogs are cleaner than we thought and don't like poop that's not getting picked up. Could be a hint. Maybe they are aware that bad things come from stepping in their old poop . . . . . . harmful micro organisms and parasites such as worms and other "not friendly" strangers.
My dog started random, I yelled at her, and spanked her because I kept almost vomiting, and I have 3 dogs, they eat the same stuff, only one eats her poop, my pooper scooper is in my shed and I can’t get it, and I can’t clean it. Thanks

My dog is so clean he even cleans up his own poop.
I was watching this and I got a chocolate ad lol
My baby ate her poop as a puppy. Had no idea why. It was gross. Could tell because of her breath snd abcense of known poop lol. Then one day after a bout a year she completely stopped. 🤷♀️ . She's 12 now and never ate her poop since. Could be a phase for some dogs.
I’m so fed up with my dog being so obsessed with her waste. When i see her running towards it i try to pick her up or block her from going there but the more i want to stop her the more she gets passionate about eating that poop and she will literally do ANYTHING to get there. We try to clean it up asap but sometimes we don’t and the waste would be there for hours and she wouldn’t look at it but then all of sudden she gets interested in eating it idk why. -___-

I always clean up after my dog. I'm standing guard immediately but after staying with a friend this weekend he didn't pick up after his dog and my dog saw one of his dog eating their poop and then the next thing I knew my dog dog it. I spent two days cleaning up his yard and telling him to clean up after his dogs. That's just gross. I mean gross gross and more gross.
they used to eat it for the intestinal parasite eggs, nutritional for them
I'm here from FBE
my sister has two dogs and one ov them is a labrador puppy, the puppy was eating the poop will the other dog was shitting it and it was the most disgusting thing iv ever seen
🤮
My pup will not stop eating her poop at all idk what it is
i dont know why my dog keeps eating his shit even though i feed him meat frequently what i assume is that he just doesn't like seeing shit and wants to clean it immediately he mostly do it at night when I'm mostly asleep so i dont have time to clean it immediately
I adopted a dog and now hes doing this as an adult dog. I heard meat tenderizer makes their poop taste bad but is good to mix with their food. Also want to give the pumpkin puree option a try too!
It really works they love it
My tiny baby Maltese does the exact same thing! She is only potty trained for pee pads right now so she goes on those inside. She always eats her poop when I leave the house and I can tell cause she either did it right before I got home and can smell it on her breath or her burps give it away. When I'm home she's good for the most part, but sometimes if she goes poop and I don't catch it for a little while cause I'm doing laundry, or cooking then she will eat it. My dog is 9 months old now and has pretty much always had this problem and has a problem with trying to pick up literally everything off the ground. I constantly have to fish leaves, rocks, bugs out of her mouth. For the most part she doesn't get a chance to eat her poop often cause I work from home so I pick it up right away but I really want to figure out how to contain this so I don't have to watch her 24/7. It seems like she actually waits to go poop so she can go when we are out of the house as a punishment for being gone. She gets plenty of attention but the way that the events happen makes it seem like it's a bit of a behavioral problem and that she's lashing out. But it could always be because of a deficiency of some sort or medical issue too. Her vet wasn't super worried about it and suggested we try forbid, which is supposed to help their stool taste less appetizing and it worked a little bit to begin with but it stopped working. I wouldn't recommend any powder you put on their food to make it taste bad because they're not sustainable and you can't give it to them forever plus it wasn't very helpful to begin with. Do you have any suggestions for how to get a dog to stop eating their poop that is indoor/pee pad trained? I've tried positive reinforcement and give her a treat after every time she goes poop to the point she comes running to me everytime she is done cause she knows she will get a treat so that has really helped stop her from eating it while I'm home and just busy. But I don't know how to stop her from doing it when I leave the house. Will pineapple juice or actual pineapple give them diarrhea?
try giving her something else to chew/play with like a kong, snuffle mat or licki pad (you can find them in my amazon store - www.amazon.com/shop/ourpetshealth ) These will give your pup something else to chew on that's more appropriate, as well as keep her entertained when you are out. Any change of diet can cause diarrhoea, but so long as you don't give too much it shouldn't be much of a problem

Good tips but I’d never add meat tenderiser to the food. It’s terrible for their stomachs.
