Please do a strip till trial in your plot with dry fertilizer incorporated in the strip. Close to the surface like with a Dawn and deeper like with a Gladiator running at 7 inches. I bet the results will be similar to your tillage plots.
As a 74 year old previous farmer we were always told to plow down our P and K, and chisel plow to breakup a hard pan and only no till on hilly ground to prevent erosion.. Roots grow in the ground not in the air. Why would you let your fertillizer wash away without getting it in the soil.

What about the plow without application? That's a better control element.
