What you say is pretty much correct except that per the brochure your pin weight when leaving the factory is actually 2580 not 2480. You must add to that 60 pounds for 2 full propane tanks and the weight of batteries. To be accurate you need to put everything in your rig including clothes dishes appliances outside chairs grills etc. then reweigh the pin at a certified scale to see the actual pin weight. You are also correct about insurance walking away after an accident.

A few months ago I was out on I-20 in the right lane at 65 mph towing my GD 310GK-R 5th wheel with my 2020 F350 dually when all of a sudden a "lifted" Nissan Titan diesel appears from behind me towing a huge 36-38ft Montana 5th wheel in the left lane. Dude had that Nissan Cummins pegged on the floor mat when he passed us. The engine was screaming and the truck squatting bad.

Ya, it's unreal what people do. I got passed by a transporter while we were in New Mexico on 54 heading Eastbound where it was 2 lane, he almost killed a few of us, he just HAD to pass me, was riding my tail and decided to pass me while there was oncoming traffic he couldn't see, cars were almost in the ditch and he tried to 'push' me out of the way, it was crazy.

Also consider items you have added to your truck like the hitch, Bed cover, larger tires, etc. I weighed mine and this added 1000lbs to the advertised weight.

Great video, based on your numbers it looks like you need a dually. If you load the trailer with clothes for Mutiple seasons like we do our clothes for three seasons weigh 500 lbs. we travel 4 to 6 months at a time. We travel summer, fall and into winter. We are from south Florida and try to escape the heat. The pass through has 300 lbs in it then all the food etc. All together in the trailer is 1400lbs, The truck has 500 lb in the bed 240 fuel 400 people.

One comment i have is regarding what you said about researching payload and towing capacities for your truck on manufacturer websites. When it comes to your specific truck the only place to find that capacity info is going to be on the sticker and some brands are better at this than others. The info on the websites is pure marketing wank. They focus heavily on the "max" numbers for a very specific truck and its basically a 🍆measuring contest between the different brands. The numbers they show are for a stripped 2wd truck and as you add options those numbers go down significantly.
For example i own a 2024 GMC Denali 3500 DRW with a diesel and 4wd. GM lists max payload for the 3500 model as 7290#, that is for a 2wd regular cab DRW with a gas. Mine being 4wd, a crew and loaded the payload is 5150# on the sticker. That's a big difference. They also list the max towing at 36000#, that is for a 2wd regular cab DRW with a diesel. My truck its 31500# on the sticker, again a big difference.
When it comes to the sticker GM is the only one i know of that puts trailering information sticker on there with both tow capacities and payload on there. RAM and Ford , they just list the axles and the vehicle and combined weight ratings.
Capacities are easy enough to figure out. All you need are two numbers to start. GVWR which stands for gross vehicle weight rating. That's the weight of the vehicle and all its cargo. GCRW which stand for "gross combined weight rating" is the other.
Now go take your truck and weigh it at a cat scale and i suggest taking it as you would run it down the road with passengers and stuff. Take the weight of the truck and subtract it from the GVWR which gives you your available payload. Subtract the weight of the truck from the GCWR will give you the maximum trailer you can pull. Keep in mind the rating for a trailer will differ between gooseneck and bumper pull.
Using my truck as an example again. When i take it to a cat scale full of fuel, people, dogs, stuff in the truck and my toolbox it weighs in right at 9500#. My truck has a 14000# GVWR which leaves me 4500# of payload when you subtract the trucks weight from the GVWR. My GCWR is 40000, subtracting the trucks actual weight of 9500# gives me a max trailer of 30500#.
My RV has a pin of 4200# and a total weight of 24k. I'm well within limits on both.

I live on the NC coast, I see some of the craziest tow combinations this time of year. Too common to see a 1/2 ton truck towing a massive camper with nose of truck pointed up and the hitch within inches of being on the pavement. Same with a 3/4 ton truck with a tri-axle toy hauler. Even better, a small jeep with a massive boat.

It scares me just walking through a campground seeing what combinations people operate with. It's beyond ignorant. And the same goes for us with class A's also, especially gaser's. A lot of them are limited to 5000 lb towing capacity and people put heavy jeeps and even F150's behind them. People don't realize and/or care that with a fully packed rig you are quickly over your rig's limits.

I am following the 80% rule of thumb which is simply don’t routinely use your equipment above 80% of its ratings if you want it to last.
