These vids of Shinbo made me realize my Anime Aesthetic. Jokes aside, it did made me realize that "look" of anime I actually really like and have been missing from modern anime.
Just something I realized while watching this video. The other day I saw Kizumonogatari 2 in theaters, and near the end there was a crazy over the top crucifixion that wasn't in the novel. My mind is kind of blown right now.
Videos like this are the backbone of this channel. They may not be the most popular but the sheer amount of work and quality put into them build the foundation of credibility that the more popular pieces can fall back on.
A thing I noticed from the clip on 6:21, as well as the Bakemonogatari series: The inside of the mouth is just as detailed as everything else. This might be Akiyuki Shinbo, or the character designer's little quirk, but it is something I find unique, since most shows display the teeth as paper-thin and the tongue just a red blob inside a slightly darker red hole.
Digi has a rare talent. Any normal UA-camr makes a video 10+ minutes, I get bored after no more than five. With Digi, I've even watched him shave for twenty minutes. How the fuck... Maybe I'm just creepy, or Digi is the most interesting dude on UA-cam. I'm fine with either.
Just checked, it was a 13 minute video of him shaving. I guess the full twenty came from when I paused to grieve for seven minutes over the loss of such a magnificent beard.
Modern anime has more clean, crisp lineart and its production is more efficient. But it's hard to deny that it looks kind of cheap even compared to what would have been considered throwaway schlock back in the day. Background art in particular is in a pitiable state.
A lot of backgrounds are done in 3d now so they end up being noticeably lower detail, on the flip side its easier to use multiple camera angles and reuse backgrounds. But we need a return of really well animated ova's in my opinion.
speaking of lineart, is it really stupid of me to miss bold and harsh lineart? them modern animes use lineart so thin I don't even register it most of the time, and so the drawings of the characters don't really stand out from the background as much, plus they sadly sort of lose shape and volume :V thats just me I suppose, and my eyesight is rather poor, but that's just my thoughts. I love me pronounced lineart.
I love this kind of stylistic deep dive-- I don't know if I've ever seen a Shinbo show before, but now I really want to seek him out! I hope you have more of these style-focused videos lined up (but lbr I'll love whatever analysis video you put out haha)
I am an unabashed Kawajiri fanboy and will always have a soft spot for late 80's and 90's schlocky OVA's. I'll definitely be looking out for Twilight of the Dark Master, thanks for the heads up, digi. As for the rest of the video, your research and scripts coupled with davoo's editing make for some of the best anime-related content on UA-cam. Keep up the great work.
I'm so glad you made this, I had seen this guy's aesthetic in a lot of older anime I would come across while digging for sakuga and watching older anime and fell in love with it, but it didn't occur to me that a lot of these scene i liked were made under one guy. Highly inspired by his work, and will now likely binge it all.
I never knew about him being an animation checker and using the name Futoshi Shiiya, that was some completely new information for me. Also never knew that Akio Watanabe did the character designs for Yamamoto Yoko TV, really makes me wish that had gotten a US release... Overall this was a fantastic 2 part series that payed some much needed attention to many of Shinbo's overlooked projects from the early days of his career. It was nice to finally see a video speak highly of the Soultaker and to see a video mention Tenamonya Voyagers at all. I'm really happy that you made this and I hope that one day you get around to doing a "Akiyuki Shinbo in the 2000s".
I need to watch The Soultaker. it looks amazing. Something I'm curious about is where I can find a show similar to dead leaves. I adore that movie for just how fun it is to watch.
Yo davoo thanks for the comment. sad thing is tho I have seen all those and own boxsets for most of em. It sucks being an otaku and exhausting all the shows with the style I love. Well at least luluco is easily rewatchable
will do mister editor that moonlights reviewer. I enjoy trigger and gainax style but also have a love for shaft stuff ever since 2008 when I saw dance in the Vampire bund. *cough*the manga is superior*cough* Sorry your recommendations didn't help, they were good recommendations though, I just have watched about half as much anime as digi, according to MAL at least.
Thanks to this I started catching up on all Shaft shows that I didn't watch yet to fully understand what you'll be talking about in your next Shinbo video.
Please do more content like this where you dive deep and dissect a specific director/anime/scene. Much better than when you do opinion essays even though those get more views.
Bravo.
Would love to see more dissertations on other people in the industry. Rumiko Takahashi would be interesting, as you did mention Urusei Yatsura in this however dont know if shes your speed. Anyhow keep up the good work
Oh well most of them are minor works, niche works or plain shit anime. Also, 90's stuff, is hard to be into it as most shows from that era arent talked about at all today.
What I want to know is why so many Shinboisms occur in Neon Genesis Evangelion. Watching all these clips of fundamental "Shinbo" aesthetic, I am almost astounded to find that he was in no way involved with the 90's NGE series.
This would be the first time I had heard of Space Pirate Mito if I didn't go spelunking on MAL. anyway it's kind of a boring slog but kind of unique and it looks really nice. Aoi & Mutsuki (Uchuu Kaizoku Mito no Daibouken: Futari no Joou-sama) btw is the sequel to Space Pirate Mito and they both aired in 1999
great mini series Digi! as a fan of Shinbo I found this to be very fun and informative. If you do a video series on his modern career, I'd love to know how he commandeered the reigns of SHAFT, and also about his slight dip into the world of Hentai, of what little you can divulge of that on UA-cam.
its funny when you started to catalogue all of these tropes I immediately thought of Outlaw Star. it pretty much checks these off one after the other. eyeball fetish. check. camera aspect. check. color pallets. check. repeating screens and reflections. check. but sure enough Shinbo had nothing to do with the project at all. just goes to show how a popular director has influence I suppose? how do you feel about that title. I don't think I have ever seen you discuss it yet. please correct me UA-cam comment section if I am wrong. great video. 👍
In his previous life, Akiyuki Shinbo was crucified by a group of creepy bespectacled scientists in a harshly lit gothic castle, and a team of transforming magical girls failed to save him in time due to taking a shared bath a little too long.
Really looking forward to watching Madoka (my favorite Shinbo show) while running down the style checklist. I'm looking forward to your analysis of his 2000s work especially how you're going to tackle all the "special projects" (aka pornography) he worked on in the early 2000s
Wyatt The Word Weaver the reason he showed madoka while talking about other directors using Shinbo's style is because Yukihiro Miyamoto directed madoka, not shinbo. Shinbo was only the "chief director," which means he oversaw the series and made changes as he saw fit, while Miyamoto was the series director who actually directed the series and rebellion.
The Soultaker is a fascinating work, fan of Shinbo or not. Funny enough, I have liked some of his most prominent works without knowing the same guy was behind them.
My takeaway from this 2 part series is that Shinbo directed A LOT of really good looking trash (and some actually good ones) for 10 years. Glad I watched these videos so I can appreciate works like the Monogatari Series even more, without having to watch all the boring OVA's Shinbo directed.
I remember watching Soultaker as a kid around 2002-2004 and thinking what in the actual fuck am I looking at? Is this an alternate reality ? What world is this? Does this literally take place in Hell?
I don't see much consideration of anime through the lens of the staff who worked on them, even though that's one of the most common perspectives people use when they talk about Western media. It's pretty cool to see such an in-depth anime video done with this in mind. Also, holy shit, these are coming out so fast!
Hey Digi, can you do a video on emotional manipulation? More specifically what makes something emotionally manipulative, and what doesn't. I think this would be a cool idea to explore since I have seen this phrase thrown around a lot lately. Keep up the good work!
Same here, i unsuscribed to almost all the other anime youtubers, but there are some other anime related channels (that you could discover from the podcasts and blogs from digi) that you should check; My Japanese Animes, Ninouh, Mumkey Jones, The best guy ever, subsonic sparkle and Mother's basement. They are pretty great and everyone have their own style.
Mothers basement is fine. IMO I only watch digi and gigguk. They are polar opposites in presentation, but equally well done. I gotta say, I don't care for this, but I can understand why it exists. I just hope over analyzing anime directors becomes part of the norm. I much prefer his videos like the psycho pass one.
canipa effect is reeeaaally good as well; he just doesnt upload as frequently. in my opinion he's one of the best anime based youtube channels. He's got some good material
Shinbo should do an anime of Digi going through Shinbo's anime of Digi going thro- guhgh my head what am I loved it though, massive brain haemorrhage aside :D
In missing years.Due to fucked up result of Soul Taker. (Anniversary anime of Tsunoko and very first anime aired in HD format) Shinbo was banned from industry. He gone to did adult anime under alias Minamizawa Jyuhachi. You can see his hentai anime list on ANN.
Instead of a catalogue of "Shinbo in the 2000s" since it would be a clusterfuck, are we to expect a final chapter that follows his protégés or even just techniques as they spread through the medium? This feels a bit like learning what Gainax did to anime again.
"20 wallpaper per second artsttyle"
Whelp, that's a term now.
more like 50 per second...
Literally anything Makoto Shinikai
These vids of Shinbo made me realize my Anime Aesthetic. Jokes aside, it did made me realize that "look" of anime I actually really like and have been missing from modern anime.
Yes, Shinboism is gorgeous to look at, you are not alone ^v^
Just something I realized while watching this video. The other day I saw Kizumonogatari 2 in theaters, and near the end there was a crazy over the top crucifixion that wasn't in the novel. My mind is kind of blown right now.
i realized that too lol, and the zooming in of the eyes during the half vampire fight
buspik Well, Monogatari has always had a ton of eye fixation.
i wish kizumonogatari played in theaters near me (;﹏;)
This is the kind of content i want from the digibro prime channel.
The SoulTaker is probably one of the most beautiful things that exist.
And yeah, the OP is fucking awesome!
Videos like this are the backbone of this channel. They may not be the most popular but the sheer amount of work and quality put into them build the foundation of credibility that the more popular pieces can fall back on.
This was a great little series dude. Would love to see Shinbo in the 2000's and more vids like this!

God I usually hate these kind of people... but i'm gonna be that kind of person. I REALLY miss the aesthetic of late 90's early 2000's anime....
Modern anime has more clean, crisp lineart and its production is more efficient.

I hate the thick harsh lines that were used back then, idk why but the faces either looked and extremely short and fat or long thin too me.
I love this kind of stylistic deep dive-- I don't know if I've ever seen a Shinbo show before, but now I really want to seek him out! I hope you have more of these style-focused videos lined up (but lbr I'll love whatever analysis video you put out haha)

Thank you so much for doing this Digibro. I think series like this dedicated to members of the industry are the best, like the videos on Hideaki Anno.
I JUST SHINBO-ING THOUGH THE 90's, ITS A NEW WAY I WANT TO BE
Holy shit so what I took away from this video, gotta watch the soul taker holy shit!
I never knew about him being an animation checker and using the name Futoshi Shiiya, that was some completely new information for me. Also never knew that Akio Watanabe did the character designs for Yamamoto Yoko TV, really makes me wish that had gotten a US release...

Your videos need to be shown at anime courses in universities!
Thanks so much for this, it was amazing. I really hope you do make a 2000's video.
He is planning to make one as far as i know, it just needs A LOT of research.
NickPap I know, he said it in the video, but who knows if/when it will happen.
Mrandom101 Oh sorry i was still only half way through the video when i typed that.
NickPap digi's number one rule in the comments is finish the video before you comment
mikufan1212 Yeah, i know.
I sort of want to watch Soul Taker.
It certainly cuts the mmmmmmmmmustard~
ya think? That shit is fucking beautiful! O-O
You want some incest?
This two part video is the reason why I'm subscribed to your channel. Magnificent work.
I KNOW MY AKIO WATANABE CHARACTER DESIGNS WHEN I SEE IT. IM WATCHING STARSHIP GIRL YAMAMOTO RITE TF NOW
Ill be waiting for Shinbo in the 2000's
I need to watch The Soultaker. it looks amazing. Something I'm curious about is where I can find a show similar to dead leaves. I adore that movie for just how fun it is to watch.

Sorry your recommendations didn't help, they were good recommendations though, I just have watched about half as much anime as digi, according to MAL at least.
Ok, I need to see Soultaker now. Those scenes and Akio's character designs are pulling me in.
I'd absolutely LOVE if you made more video's about Shinbo's work in the 2000's, these last two were seriously great!
soul taker's scene styling and character dialogue camera cutting is the basis of monogatari
Too much productivity for me to comprehend, WHAT'S GOING ON?
Thanks to this I started catching up on all Shaft shows that I didn't watch yet to fully understand what you'll be talking about in your next Shinbo video.

2 videos in 1 day. what is happening.
Davoo moved in with him. that's what.
noice
I've just started watching the Bakemonagatari series and it's such a fine example of Shinbo's style, I love it.
Keep up the good content Digi.
I suppose you might call the eye thing a literal "Iris Transition."
I love this! It's so indents and scripted. I really hope you can make one for shinbo in the 2000's
Digibro cranking out videos! Dude I'm stoked for the 2000 one. Don't die though.
been waiting for this part 2 !!!
Well, you sold me on Soul Taker, so congratulations!
I'd really like to see you make this a series with different directors/famous key animators.
can't wait for more shinbo exposé
Shinbo should do an anime version of *Utsuro no hako to zero no maria*
If its at all posible to do he is probably the right person.
I know right .... I think he is one of the few people who can do justice to a light novel
Keep it up with the videos Digi, they are great.
DAMN, now I'm want to rewatch Pani Poni Dash
It's not as good as you remember lol
This is the first time I've been this early. What an experience.
Very interesting video, got me hooked till the end.
I find myself feeling like a fucking casual since I haven't watched a single one of those shows.
MisterCreeper97 Then, what are you waiting for?
MisterCreeper97 git gud
Oh well most of them are minor works, niche works or plain shit anime. Also, 90's stuff, is hard to be into it as most shows from that era arent talked about at all today.
Jans6ever Yu Yu Hakusho is good.
JD002 That why the ''most''.
Great analysis, I hope you make videos on his other works as well.
Wow, easy Digi, two video in the row.
Yes more shinbo greatness :D Great video :)
amazing work

Toshitaka Amano and Shinbo is a match made in heaven, no wonder I like Twilight of the dark master so
I'm interested in this "atypical romance and sexuality" thing
Oh wow. The way he described Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko is the same way I would describe Steven Universe.
great mini series Digi! as a fan of Shinbo I found this to be very fun and informative. If you do a video series on his modern career, I'd love to know how he commandeered the reigns of SHAFT, and also about his slight dip into the world of Hentai, of what little you can divulge of that on UA-cam.

The Soultaker is a fascinating work, fan of Shinbo or not. Funny enough, I have liked some of his most prominent works without knowing the same guy was behind them.
Good
Please make a video about his work as Jyuhachi. Even if you have to put it on another site, that stuff is so fascinating.

10:48 So the reason behind Shinbo's hentai period remains a mystery...
awesome
Would LOVE to see a 2k vid Digi my lover.

Mr. Cynical No.
someone pls remind me to watch some of this autor´s work
Watch some of his work
5:22 the body circle rotation
I'm getting a lot devil may cry vibes from the soultaker maybe that's just me.
Kieran Sweeney Yes and a little bit of Castlevania also.
apparently SoulTaker was inspired heavenly by both the prior mentions as well as an old anime from the 1980s that I can't remember...
I have such a Shinboner right now
Shinbo should do an anime of Digi going through Shinbo's anime of Digi going thro- guhgh my head what am
I loved it though, massive brain haemorrhage aside :D
What is early "digital cel manipulation"?. Does that mean that it is cel animated but digitally composted together(like GITS95)
That's how I assume the episode was made based on the way it looks, tho I can't confirm it to be the case.
yeah, more shinbooooo
In missing years.Due to fucked up result of Soul Taker. (Anniversary anime of Tsunoko and very first anime aired in HD format) Shinbo was banned from industry.
He gone to did adult anime under alias Minamizawa Jyuhachi.
You can see his hentai anime list on ANN.
Well, looks like I gotta watch soul taker tonight.
Instead of a catalogue of "Shinbo in the 2000s" since it would be a clusterfuck, are we to expect a final chapter that follows his protégés or even just techniques as they spread through the medium? This feels a bit like learning what Gainax did to anime again.
Analyze BTS`s Blood sweat and tears music video. It`s very artistic, aesthetically pleasing, has beautiful song and room for many theories.
i really loved the soultaker
Please make a shinbo in the 00's!!!
5:44 That Jotaro`s costume tho.
God pls do Shinbo in the 2000s x.x Im even okay with an After Dark version ~~
Nice intro man. Koto is my waifu.
digi, could you talk about Manchester orchestra on one of your after dark videos?
11:20 I didn't know senjougahara can do time travel.
How many times did you watch all those series? Also, how long did you research to make this video? That's a hell of a detailed job! Congratulations!
digi can you make an analysis video about koi kaze .. I know it's awkward but I want really know your opinion about it this anime XD..
if i had to title this video series as something else i would call it "I can't really recommend this show but..."
You gotta do the 2000's video :3c
Hell yee
Can anyone post a timestamp breakdown of every single anime?
