    I produced a video on my channel with a question, Sam Stevens one of your views sent me your way, so here I am. Question? How soon after kindling can you re breed a bunny? All ten of my kits died from the new mommy.

    • @FoodForThought.
      @FoodForThought.  8 років тому

      Rabbits can actually breed the next day if needed to. Some breeders will need the rabbit at week 3-4 even when they have kits as it's good for their bodies to be pregnant.

    Enjoyed the video. I really like the watering crock, in winter here a person could just fill it and not use a bottle easily or use a bottle. My rabbits are outside and do not heat so the water would freeze at times. I use water bottles right now and do not like them. Makes me think of a guy I was in the army with that kissed his Howitzer M109 tank in the cold, his lips stuck to the tank so you can imagine the visual I see my rabbits in at some point, lmao. I did go to the website and ordered only one to see how it works for me but still waiting for final bill with shipping to be emailed to me. I couldn't believe how reasonable their cages are, much less than the cost of wire it seemed.

    I have a 5 week new zealand rabbit that appears to have scours, I say appears, because the color and smell is like urine, does not resemble diarrhea at all. is a total of 7 siblings with the mother, they are free feeding on 16% protein pellets, free hay, 1 carrot a day, 3 leaves of kale, 1 celery leave, 1 tablespoon of calf manna, 1 tablespoon of boss, free water with apple cider vinager. I started sprinkling D.E. on their pellets once I noticed the wet bottom, she doesn't seem improving.... any thoughts? I don't do antibiotics, and all the other rabbits are ok.... not sure if is something congenital or viral/bacterial....

      @FoodForThought.  8 років тому +2

      Christian Leonardo That all depends on the season as in the winter you'll be feeding pellets, friending in where you live. In the spring and summer, the feed can be almost zero as you can feed weeds and grass. Winter, I find it to be about $5 per rabbit, $1 per pound or so.

    • @FoodForThought.
      @FoodForThought.  7 років тому

      I get my bags from a feed store in Thorndale. They are 16%. You really don't need the 18% unless that's all that you are feeding them. Good quality straw and fresh greens will give them all the rest that they need.

    • @JustinjosephBearelle
      @JustinjosephBearelle 7 років тому

      Yeah, I was giving 18% just because that's all I had access too. I was buying skids from a farmer at his discount price. But the bags you're getting are cheaper. I'm not picky, I'd rather 16 since I only feed them pellets on weekends when I'm away, or if I run out of fresh greens. Thanks for the info. I think I found the place. Thorndale farm supply. These little guys can eat a lot of food. I need to start a small field of wheat grass.

      @@FoodForThought. I'm sure you don't miss the rain! I watched your video and what I'm wondering about is what sort of meat yield do you get? I have seen another video that says 60% of live weight and 50% for less good breeds. Also they had 1 buck and two does - had four kills per year and it yielded 192lbs of usable meat - would this match up to your experience? Can you get away without feeding rabbits pellets? Say just feed them grass and old vegetables? Or maybe it would be cheaper to feed them cattle/calf pellets? Sorry for all the questions- I'm thinking of getting started into rabbits here in the UK and would really appreciate any help. Love your videos and setup.

      @@FoodForThought. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to me Andy - it means an awful lot! Have you heard that rabbit meat takes more vitamins to digest than it returns? @FoodForThought.  5 років тому

      @@stewartdahamman Protein poisoning is real, but would occur from any protein, not just rabbit. Wild rabbit is very lean of fat and that's why people think of it. In a survival situation, 80% of your diet should be wild edibles, so educate yourself or others and this wouldn't be a problem. Would also be the same if you were catching just fish too.

    • @FoodForThought.
      @FoodForThought.  7 років тому +1

      Traci Vosberg I have attached around 5lbs, which is usually 10-12 weeks old. Cost is all down to what you feed them. If you feed them only fresh greens from your garden and the local area, then the only cost is your time to collect the feed. If you feed just pellets then it will cost a lot more. All up to you.

    Talking about fresh feed , instead of pellets. I want to stop buying pellets because they include soy (GMO) and corn (GMO) . Could i feed barley and wheat seeds , alphalpha clover hay , fresh greens and sprout barley and wheat ? Also, in the near future, i am interested in buying a pellet machine and make my own feed with hay,barley, wheat,salt etc. Is there any problem in feeding rabbits this way(without pellets) ? Mother-rabbits would be able to feed their babies while not feeding them pellets ? And what would be the final weight in 3-4 months for a new zealand rabbit , while feeding them anything I said before instead of pellets ? Thank you for your time !

      A 3-4 month rabbit will be 6lbs plus. I usually harvest at 10 weeks for a 5lb rabbit. You can definitely feed rabbits without pellets. Feed weeds as much as you can. You can also grow your own fodder from barley and wheat, rather than just the seed as there is more nutrition in the sprout that the seed.
