Osprey Update from The Bridge:
Over the past weeks, viewers noticed an apparent injury to the leg of one of the osprey chicks. Bridge grounds staff immediately responded to the report by reaching out to the Group for the East End (GFEE) and experts at the Wildlife Rescue Center of the Hamptons. Once it became clear the injured bird would not likely survive on its own but that a potentially recoverable injury was present, we arranged for qualified wildlife rehabilitators, as well as the appropriate equipment, to reach the nest, to evaluate the situation. On Sunday, they successfully removed the bird for further evaluation.
Unfortunately, it was determined that the bird would not recover. If left to starve in the nest, it would die a slow, agonizing death (typically, its parents would stop feeding it at some point), or it would crash trying to land if it ever attempted to fly, so it was humanely euthanized. This step was reluctantly taken only after consultations among all the experts and agreement that this was the most humane solution to an unfortunate but recurrent situation in nature.
