for someone who repeatedly gets told she is overworking pieces and should learn to pick up the important bits of a piece, ur approach of going back and pushing thru is a fresh breath of air.
So happy for this video. When I watch videos on creating backgrounds I’m always left thinking “but what happened next?” Love that you did a follow up to show us. I hope there’s a part three so we can see how they finish up.
That’s what I often think too - “now what …” I’ll make a note to share the fully finished pages of the ones at the end in another video. It’s great to see incremental progress on spreads. Glad you enjoyed!
Thank you so much Laura, I really really enjoyed looking at your art journals and then watching you adding more to them all. Please stay safe and well too xxxx Mags ❤❤❤
I’m just beginning my artistic journey, but I also find that most of the time I would rather add a couple elements to five pages than get a whole page done from start to finish. Thanks for validating my erratic process 😂 a lot of artists on this platform portray their work as made all-in-one-go
Ah, I totally get it! Creating doesn’t have to be all-in-one-go, and sometimes those layered, evolving pages turn out to be the most interesting. Embrace that “erratic process”-it’s uniquely yours 😊🎨
I too get overbogged on my paintings, trying too hard I suppose, and it gets discouraging. You always lend a sense of ease to me in that I do need to carry on with practice but maybe try a different approach in my layering. Thank you, Laura for sharing your pages, it helps a lot to see how a talented artist thinks.
It can certainly take time and tons of creating to find that balance. I hope that some of my tutorials may help you along the way, wishing you the best! Happy creating!
Always enjoy your podcasts & UA-cam videos. I like the mix of life style with materials & making. I’ve reduced what I watch & listen to due to ill health. But you remain a firm favourite. Much appreciate the time & effort you take & always look forward to what you share. Enjoy your few weeks off & look after yourselves ☺️
Thank you, it's great to hear that you enjoy hearing a bit about the "thinking" that accompanies the art! I find it helpful for my own art practice to talk through the process! Win-Win!
Love watching the mark making. I seem to be a bit stuck with marks & so I've taken to drawing shapes & thinks in my acrylic clean off journals. I'm overly conscious of copy other people & want to find my own marks.
I wish you could feel my excitement when I get an email saying you have a new YT video and podcast! Thanks for sharing your talents! PS the new apron look fabulous on you.
Thank you for sharing your process for layering…love the botanical mark making…do you practice your botanical marks on scratch paper before making the marks on the journal spread?
You are welcome :) Most of the time I just go for it and see what happens. It's really up to you. Having a piece of paper close by to practice on is a great approach too!
Wonderful ideas about how to build after an initial background, thank you! I'm excited to get to my art desk now! I'm curious about the music you have playing...will you please share a music credit? (Watch it be Taylor Swift and everyone reading this will think I live under a rock. Hahaha!)
I love that this video has you excited to create! That is what I always hope for. We license royalty-free music through a subscription service called Soundstripe. There is definitely no Taylor Swift in the catalogue!! The songs are by an artist called Cira Grandi, the first one is called My Roots and the second song is called One More Chance.
I love to see your creative thoughts come to fruition because sometimes I look at something I’ve painted as a background and I can’t see where I want to go next with it. I’d love to see more of these videos. Thanks Laura.❤️

I love that! It's pushing through; that's key. Almost all my art pieces are "overworked" at some point in the process. It's fun trying to tame them!

I have 6 books I've used over time. It is so hard for me to let go. I'm rough on myself.

Drawing shapes and things is the perfect start! I love to just go for it and see what marks I end up with, it's always an adventure.

IKEA! They have so many hidden treasures! www.ikea.com/au/en/p/kalfjaeril-apron-patterned-blue-light-beige-90493130/
Doesn’t the ink bleed to the other side?
I only use acrylic ink and they don’t bleed through, alcohol inks would though.
I love to see your creative thoughts come to fruition because sometimes I look at something I’ve painted as a background and I can’t see where I want to go next with it. I’d love to see more of these videos. Thanks Laura.❤️
You’re so tidy!
Thank you! I try!
