  • It was bound to happen. The post office finally delivered on their promise to play football with a package. Well at least I can't be blamed for trashing this one.

WOW! Nice repair on this one. Sounds pretty good for an old unit. Glad you stayed with it and saved another!

Excellent repair dave, back from the dead and sounding great :-D
I would say it was suffering from a lack of regular servicing.
When i had to dissasemble something with plugs that could be plugged in wrong, i drew a line across the connector+plug with a thin black marker pen.
No two lines were drawn in the same place, impossible to mix up.
My memory is crap richard :)

Each plug is unique on this one. Yes when same plug type I always mark them too.

Most of these old dat machines are like that because people haven't used them in eons.

Dave I just bought a dat player anyway and I think I will have to give it the maintenance that I rightly see in your videos. Thanks for sharing and greetings from Mexico.

I've never had a DAT or worked on one. Seeing you work on a lot of these
makes me curious and now I want one just to play with if you can still get
the tapes and they are not too costly. Reel to Reel is bad enough, I spend
a crap load on those....... but the sound is worth it. Cheers 🍻

there's a shipping store here called "going postal" and it makes me laugh, cause it's true. send something through the mail and they seem to go postal on it!

😮‍💨 _"We're going to have to take it apart a little further"_ The dreaded words as I stare gloomily at my Tascam DA-30 MKII.

To be fair to postal workers and couriers, over the years i have seen some
very poorly packed items that arrive damaged.
Packing a rack mounted unit with the brackets still attached is asking
    for trouble.
You need to double box with plenty of bubblewrap to stand a chance of
    surving the rough handling.
At least you were able to repair it, and hopefully it will make it back to
the customer undamaged and still working.

I stuck styrofoam in the corners and more bubble wrap..

Another thing that helps if you need to put a project aside and keep track of the screws are those little pill pouch tiny zip lock bags.

Never have any trouble with screws. Have a photographic memory. I remember exactly where everything goes.

Let me tell you a little story about the shipping fragile and heavy equipment and one experience I had with it. About 15 years ago I sold an old professional monitor it was a conrac professional CRT. 14 inch screen rack mount very heavy well protected had been in a TV production truck for years banged around in the production truck never had a problem with it. I picked up three of them from the station I worked at when they upgraded to techtronics. I used all three in my linear edit Bay. But I upgraded to nonlinear I didn't need these monitors so I figured I would sell them put the first one up on eBay didn't expect to get much for it sold for $100 which was twice what I paid for it. Now came the shipping this thing was heavy as hell probably 80 lb and there's no way that this is going in a cardboard box. I went and bought a corrugated shipping container that was supposed to add plenty of protection lots of Styrofoam around the edges wrapped in bubble wrap packaged up taped up stuck fragile handle with Care stickers all over it. Because it was heavy it wasn't going by post so instead it was shipped UPS. Cost about $250 to ship this thing which the buyer happily paid for. When it got to the other side of the country I get this call from the buyer they somehow managed to break the picture tube inside one side of the container was totally banged up but was not punctured or anything and the CRT was shot. Looks like they dropped it face down and the shadow mask broke Free and was rattling around inside the face of the tube needless to say the guy wanted his money back and I said sorry buddy ain't going to happen file a claim with the carrier. That made me rethink selling the other two and I still have them if somebody wants one come by and get it cuz I'm certainly not shipping another one.

I literally just fixed one of those. I picked up for 5 bucks off of Facebook. One of the 12V regulator was bad on the audio board. I think the belt needs to be replaced and for some reason the record button doesn't work. I wonder if that's because I'm not using a proper DAT tape, I only have dds3 at the moment.

45:00 I got a bit concerned that the long spring attached to the mechanism was dangling into the power supply.....and was honestly expecting it to go BANG!! any moment.

Wasn't energized. Power was off. Also it wasn't that close. 2D display doesn't show depth.

I still own a DA30 that I bought new, a long time ago. About 12 months after I bought it the tape decided not to spin up. I discovered that it still worked perfectly if I left the lid off and gave the head a spin when I pressed play. The local authorised repair company could not fix it without replacing the entire transport mechanism. Any ideas?

Can you please tell me what brand of electric motor oil it is and the model?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 роки тому

3 in 1 electric motor oil, which differs vastly from 3 in 1 household oil. The electric motor oil is 20 SAE non detergent oil specifically designed for electric motors. I have used it on clocks, both electric and weighted gransfather clock I overhauled before I was making these videos. (that's why there is no video of that project)
