    Hi , I bought the 7 series several months back . I’ve used it 3 times . Be sure the hopper is at least half full . If you don’t , the computer on the unit will misread how full the hopper is . As a result , you’ll get an uncontrollable fire in the unit . In my case the door blew open with smoke so thick you could barely get close enough to unplug the thing ! My third attempt at using it failed as the control panel stopped functioning. It took three weeks for Pit Box to replace it . Needless to say , if I’d known the above would happen I’d never have bought this thing ! Finally , I was cautioned by one of their reps not to use a long extension as it might do a number on the all important control panel , plus there is nothing in the Manual about keeping the hopper full for safety ! I’ve replaced the panel . We’ll see what happens next 😱

    FYI lot of people complain about the heat fluctuation problem. it's the heat sheild. either take it out and keep the water pan in or cut large opening on all 4 sides of the shield.

    Hello. I have the Copperhead 5.
    I've used it a lot over the past several years. I mainly do pork ribs and brisket and some chicken.
    One of the first things I did to the unit was, take a sheet of galvanized and bolt it right under the door to stop any drippings when you pull out a shelf during the cook. Otherwise, you will get drippings running over the controller below.
    The probe is in the back bottom in the center. I clean it each time before a cook. It will run hotter at that probe then up at the food.
    It does a good job. But I still add some chunks of hardwood on the outer edges down by the fire pit outside the metal housing covering the burn pot. It adds more smoke at the start of the cook. I clean it all out right before the next cook. I use a shop vac to clean out the inside and inside the burn pot before each cook.
    Also, I always have the water tray inside the unit. I either have water in it, or, I keep it clean for every cook. Otherwise, you may get the oil and grease drippings to catch on fire. That chance happens more so if your set temp is over 250, if the water/drip pan is not cleaned before each cook.
    Happy cooking

      @Danny Beauclair I have had this unit that I bought from Walmart about a month and a half ago and I am kinda on the fence about it recently. I started off on the smoke for about 10 minutes and then I put the temperature where I need it which is at around 250Degrees, but it goes from 170° to 400° degrees, but it goes from 170° to 400°. Does that happen to you at all?

    • @dannybeauclair1871

      @@alaneiler2361 Hello.
      I just did a brisket. It's resting now.
      Mine set at 250 will go up and down as the new pellets go in and start to burn. But it dose not go up to 400 and then back down. It will go up to around 300 then go back down as the new pellets burn down. Do you have a separate temputure gage to to check the inside temp?
      Do you have the vertical smoker?
      If is going to 400 degrees before it goes back down to 250, I would call Pit Boss. You will have a toll free number on the booklet that came with the unit. It could be the temperature probe in the back of the smoker. Look in the back of the smoke or towards the bottom there's a little ledge. In the center of that ledge there's a little probe that sticks up about 1 to 2 inches. Keep it clean with a wire brush before each smoke.
      For the price, I like mine. I got it at Walmart too. It does a real good brisket. I just did a 19 pound brisket several weeks ago with ribs. Good luck. You should be ok, but I'd call Pit Boss about the issue. Are you keeping the pellet hopper fairly full?

      Hey man I really appreciate your advice! I am new to the game with electric smokers and have been grilling/smoking on the Big Green Egg & Primo ceramic grills so my issue was most likely human error. I am going to clean that out today with the wire brush but that totally makes sense why am having such a problem. Even with my issue the ribs turned out fantastic! I hope your brisket turned out great by the way!!! Thank you sir🍻

    I don't necessarily doubt that the heat shields isn't stainless, but I would like to point out that not all stainless steel is nonmagnetic. If it is cheap stainless, it is likely low in chromium and nickle, making it magnetic, but not as stain resistant. Just a hopefully helpful tip as so many "old school" methods of materials testing can fail us as more and more alloys are introduced to the consumer market.

    You have to watch those copper head smokers they are notorious for the pellet hopper to catch fire, because where the auger comes into the fire pot is too low and the fire works its way through to the pallet hopper. That is why I got the series the pro series vertical. The auger is higher up in the fire pot and they don’t catch. Fire is easy just saying.

    Hey Louis! Congrats on the new Pit! I see you've done your research. Research to the point of being frustrated with these manufactures. I hear you......why can't they keep their specifications straight? I really like the vertical design and that hopper is Huge! Have You set up your Traeger for open flame grilling yet? I just about had forgotten my Traeger until I started using it open flame. It was a whole new way to grill! The Pit Boss is a little low for that......but it's a plus when it comes to hanging. Newbie smoker here, so if this is a dumb question pardon my ignorance. I'm trying to do the initial burn out on my smoker and within 5 mins or so I get the ErH message that the smoker has overheated. I've tried vacuuming out the burnt pellets and starting again with fresh ones but I keeps happening. I start the smoker up on the SMOKE temp and then immediately move it to 350. Same error every time. Should I slowly move the temp up over time or what?

    • @LouisatRshackBBQ
      @LouisatRshackBBQ  5 років тому +1

      Thank you for watching. Sounds like you have a faulty controller. Once the fire in the firebox is going with flame you should be able to crank it up to whatever temp you desire and it should handle it no problem. My personal preference for starting up is to have the lid/door open and the smoke stack rain cap up to where you can slide at least 2 fingers under it. Then I turn it on the smoke setting until it has did it’s 1st cycle of heavy smoke and then went to where there was no smoke - usually about 10 minutes- then I close the lid/door and set to desired temp. Might try that and see if works but I think your controller is faulty.

    Can you tell me how the flavor is in comparison to your horizontal pellet feeds like your Traeger and RecTec? Debating going vertical in hopes of a deeper smoke profile. Looking at this, it's twin (Louisiana) or the Camp Chef XXL. Thanks!

    • @LouisatRshackBBQ
      @LouisatRshackBBQ  5 років тому +1

      Thanks for watching. Now this is just my experience and opinion- there is no flavor difference between the vertical and a horizontal. All the cookers take the same amount of time. The flavor difference comes in your preferred pellet (apple, cherry, hickory and do on) and the rubs you use. The grade of meat -select-choice-Prime - determines the taste and tenderness of the cook to some extent. I prefer choice as it is not as expensive as prime and usually is pretty tender. Also keep in mind that if you really like a heavy smoke flavor- go with mesquite and I recommend a smoke tube also burning.
      I prefer a pellet smoker with a PID controller as you won’t get huge temp swings but for the money the Louisiana vertical smoker is great as it holds a lot of pellets and plenty of meat. Hope that helps some in your decision

      I have used this in the cold and it seems to do fine. I have it under a covered cook area so I can not comment about how it would do with snow falling on it other than the hopper has like a water gutter at the hinge area and all the electrical components are on the very bottom

      Thank you for watching . I use a shop vacuum to clean out the ashes . I actually just did a impromptu video on how I clean my pellet grills . Here is the link ua-cam.com/video/9G9cVRPwdso/v-deo.html

    Is there always smoke? or is there a setting like on the bradley where you can turn off the smoke?

    • @LouisatRshackBBQ
      @LouisatRshackBBQ  5 років тому

      Steven Mucker thank you for watching- unfortunately there is no setting to shut off the smoke but once it reaches its set temp- there will be less smoke as it is just adding pellets to maintain rather than smoke.

    • @LouisatRshackBBQ
      @LouisatRshackBBQ  4 роки тому

      Thank you for watching- this is the same size as a series 5 - just marketed through Walmart so it does not say it on the glass as you would see on Pitboss website

    do this creates a lot of smoke to give food flavor

    • @LouisatRshackBBQ
      @LouisatRshackBBQ  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you for watching. My opinion is it does produce enough smoke - just buy a good brand of pellets- I do use pit boss pellets but I prefer lumberjack. I also bought a smoke tube and have used it for added smoke.

    Does screwing the head up or down affect how much smoke the smoker let's out or holds?

    • @maxwellmark
      @maxwellmark 4 роки тому

      Adjusting the chimney will increase or decrease the air flow. More air flow will vent the smoke more quickly, the effect is less smoke inside around your food. Less air flow will trap more smoke and hold more heat near the top. There is a balance between smoke and heat separate from the temp dial.

      What are the names of the smokers?

    • @maxwellmark
      @maxwellmark 4 роки тому

      They are still Pit Boss but the color is different and they are labeled Pro Series not Copperhead. Other than color (Pro Series is a little darker) the racks are removable but you can’t adjust their height like you can with the copperhead model. The rest of the unit is the same (size numbering is the same too 4-5) temperature control, auger, is the same.

      @@maxwellmark if you look at them in person, the Proseries at Lowes is significantly smaller. The shelves are shallower. something like 1300Sq in versus 1600
