There was CGI used for TARS and CASE. They used it as little as possible, but they did use it.

move the pivot point to centre and rotate and then copy key frames with intervals for each block. there's no need to rig.

can you share how it has been rigged for all the three modulations ? Are the three combined in one model ?

no rig, infact I didn't know rigging while I did that. attached those 3 elements and individually moved their pivot points to the respective joints and did the necessary keyframes.
