And the very best jet comes from Whitby.
It was made famous by all those gothic Victorians and their black jet jewellery.

@@tigerpawdesigns jet is a specific kind of petrified wood, it's created when a forest is flooded by seawater, and then fossilised. Jet comes specifically from petrified monkey puzzle tree. It has been found i other places - you can differentiate different types by the colour when you scratch.
Whitby has the best quality so was highly prized for carving ornate jewellery by the Victorians.
The name of Wookey Hole is from an ancient British language that predates Star Wars by several thousand years. 😄
Even Darth Vader isn't as old as those caves! 🤣

Whitby jet is a form of semi-precious gemstone that forms in the seams of coal, from fossilised trees. With it being black, it was used in the 1800's for mourning jewelry. I collected it for years but sold most of the items to help fund my Wedding. I kept the pieces that had been handed down through the family. It isn't used as a writing tool and is actually very expensive to buy.
The Clifton Suspension Bridge is for traffic and pedestrians. I had a memorable walk across it one New Years Eve, many years ago. Quite magical as it had extra lights on the suspension cables.
When I saw them write with it, I almost gasped XD .. lol.
Please make sure you toast the crumpets until they are brown. Most Americans never toast them long enough. Also, put loads of butter on them 😃
I live about 40 min from Whitby and it’s a beautiful place we visit often, in fact my dad goes for a drive a couple of times a month. It truly is a jewel in this area
The uk school uniform will be something she can look back on in years to come as such a unique memory for an american girl. When she grows up and her friends are sharing interesting memories. She can show them pictures of her in her uk school uniform.
Crumpets: Toast till slightly crunchy on top and then spread liberally with good butter, I always aim to fill all the little holes with melted butter.
From what I understand re American butter, it's not used in sandwiches and probably wouldn't be used for crumpets either. It's used in cooking, I believe but I have never seen any Americans use anything other than mayo in sandwiches... (yuk!!)

We have the seaside of Weston-super-Mare, mountains of south Wales, and the cotswolds all within an hours drive. The somerset dialect book i found at my parents' house. Being born in Bristol but raised in somerset, i probably have a blend of both. X

Crikey! Jet is getting pretty rare here in Whitby! Don't wear it out, that's a generous size piece you've got! When I was a youngster you'd find jet on the beach.... it's not anything like that now.
the jet is fossilised drift wood, millions of years old. The piece you have is worth £200.00
That recorder is identical to the one i used in school in 1970s 😂
Steve, Lindsay, and Sophia you are so well thought of by your viewers, it is so nice to see. Lindsay i totally felt for you, the thought of Sophia at school, the start of independence is heart wrenching, i remember that feeling, and i also felt like that at the mere mention of school starting, but you are totally right, Sophia will have so much fun, and have lots to tell you, and experience so much, she is such a smart girl, she will thrive there. Parkin, or Tharf Cake in Lancs, was traditionally made in early November using the first oats of the harvest and the last of the summer's honey, now of course treacle is used instead (cheap and plentiful). The North of Britain has all sorts of oat speciallties because we are above the "wheat line" where you can grow oats and barley but growing wheat gets more difficult (colder/wetter) the further north you go. We northerners can be somewhat thrifty, oats were cheaper than wheat. Parkin is a great companion to a cup of tea, you can also spread a little orange marmalade on a slice or serve with hot custard as a quick dessert.

Smunchy= Smooth and crunchy. Functionally a 50/50 blend of smooth and coarse Peanut Butter, I imagine.
With regards to the TV license, the BBC call them enforcement officers 🤣🤣They are nothing but salesmen who have no powers whatsoever, they can't just come into your house they have to be invited in.

People (myself included) who started as young kids on the recorder and found that they excelled at it can easily move on to the Clarinet or even the flute. Its a great starter into music :)
I love seeing children in Reception and Primary school in their uniforms 😀 - close to where I live is a Nursery/Pre school and I see most of the children wearing a red coloured card or sweatshirt with the pre-school’s logo on it. The sweetest thing is though seeing them on their daily walk to a local park. The children walk in twos, each child tightly holding on to a thick rope, wearing bright yellow hi vis jackets over their red tops, alongside a very busy main road. The kiddies are so well behaved, they age range from 3-4 and they have been taught how to walk sensibly and safely as they cross the road.
I love it too - they look so smart and keen for school 😊..... It wears off by year 8 sadly 😂

When you are aged between 8-11 years old, you just cannot understand whyyyyy your parents, the doting auntie who always put a 10/s postal order in your birthday card, any family really, just do not appreciate your specialist recorder playing skills. You are in the school orchestra, it’s very important to get it perfect! How good would your rendition of “when the saints, go marching in…” sound, if you did not practise it for at least half n hour just so you can get it EXACTLY right?? Your family seem unaware that you will be a recorder playing supremo and one day, in the future, they will be dining out on your fame and fortune as the greatest recorder playing person evahhh, as you are honoured receiving awards and medals from Royalty…
…..and then, that said one time recorder playing expert is now the parent of a child aged between 8-11, who has decided that his trombone playing will be his pathway to orchestral success….
(It was five years spent listening to squeaky, oompah and pfrrrrtttt of his rendition - funnily enough - “when the saints go marching in!!)
Winston Churchill’s former home Chartwell is now managed by the National Trust. We visited it a few Decembers ago and it was fascinating

Whitby Jet is Petrified Wood from a tree very much like the modern Monkey Puzzle Tree it is around 180 Million Years Old.
The actor Cary Grant (Archie Leach) was from Bristol.
Toast the crumpets well on both sides add lashings of salted butter and eat whilst still warm. Some people would add marmalade/jam/peanur butter or marmite. Enjoy!

@@gtaylor331 Impossible to toast one side only in a toaster, if I wait for the grill to heat I can toast a whole pack of frozen crumpets in a two slice toaster in that time. Salted butter no, only unsalted for me, Dr's. orders.

When I was in was in Primary school in the 1970s we didn't wear school uniform, in my secondary school we did. The infant school (4-7 yrs) I taught in has red jumpers, grey trousers/skirts/winter dresses and red/white gingham summer dresses. The junior school (7-11yrs) next door had Royal blue as their uniform colour. I played recorder, tenor recorder, clarinet, keyboard and xylophone at school. We also used cymboals, triangles, maracas etc. As an adult I learned to play the guitar.
The paste pots guys are great, its usually a curry, indian, there are others, instead of buying the jar ready made, the base of the curry and spices are contained in the paste, add chick and water, and onions they can be hot, and can be made milder, with coconut milk, or adding more water and using a thickener, cornflour here, corn starch i think you guys call it

Crumpets are delicious. Toasted with butter and once toasted cheese on top of the butter yummie
With the crumpets , cooking them in the toaster is best, makes it more even. Cook em till they got some brown on them and are crispy both sides. Can take a few minutes. They are like a sponge, so can be generous with butter. Many eat them as is, but I like them with an egg on or a cheese slice, then melted under the grill. Some have them with jam too but I'm more into savoury
Hope they are ok, they dont have too long a shelf life.
The railway company LNER now serves toasted Warburton's crumpets as part of their First Class menu.

Not if you have heatstroke though! That requires ice-packs on neck, groin and drinking cool water. I know this from an unfortunate incident in 1976, during a heatwave.

I hope you don’t mind me pointing this out but I noticed on the package you had from Joanne that you blacked out her surname and address. However, you left the postcode on it. I don’t know if you are aware but U.K. postcodes are only allocated to a few houses or a particular street so I thought I’d let you know for future reference.
You can literally send a letter to someone here by just putting the house number and the postcode.
For example 7/AB1 2CD. (Not a real postcode). But if you write it in that format it will get to the recipient.
Just in case you have to do this in the future. Hope you don’t mind me pointing this out.

I know that and I didn’t say it was a breach of Data Protection I was just making Steve aware. Some houses have their own postcode like single houses out on the country with no nearby neighbours My late father in laws postcode was unique to his address.

Parkin is baked in both Yorkshire and Lancashire. My mother’s home cooked parkin was sublime. I miss it greatly. She was from Lancashire.
Crumpets - yum! Hot toasted crumpets with lots of butter and and some Marmite is my favourite. You don't need lots of Marmite, but it's the best way to eat it in my opinion.
As young children, my siblings and I had Marmite soldiers - white bread and butter, with Marmite on top, and cut into small fingers. Bread and butter soldiers were also used to dunk in the yolk of a soft boiled egg which you ate from an egg cup. Oh, the memories...

In the UK learning the Recorder is a very cliche school experience lol. Well for my school anyway every year would start to learn the recorder in year 3-4 being the age of roughly 9 I believe x

Tip: when crossing someone's address off, please make sure you cross the postcode off too. As our postcodes applies to a small amount of homes on a certain street/road. So if googled, it directs you accurately. Totally different from a zip code

My great grandfather worked at the paper mills at Wookey Hole, there are many unusual place names in Somerset besides Wookey Hole, such as Westonzoyland, East Quantoxheadand and many more

Will those crumpets still be “in date”? The use by date isn’t usually that long and they go mouldy quite quickly! I know this because we’ve just had to throw away some!

I keep mine in the freezer now. Obviously they take a lot longer to cook, but I've never eaten a whole packet of crumpets in a few days, so I can have them when I fancy them instead of binging them before they turn 🤭

Lindsey you were correct, "nowt" means "nothing" in the Yorkshire dialect. It originated from an Old Norse word "naut" that first arrived in Britain with the Vikings.
You don't get owt for nowt.
It's also Lancashire dialect.
I use the word "nowt" all the time. I'm between Preston and Blackpool.

My 10 year old calls crumpets sponges, started when he was a toddler.
Good luck with the recorder. My sons had to play for school so I ended up with Annie's Song being played over and over and over as they practiced. I've never managed to get that song out of my head again. John Denver has a lot to answer for!!! 🙂
We have had recorders in US schools since the 1960s, so hoping the sender did not pay too much for it

The lush bath bombs are lovely. They are the only brand I’ll use as they don’t irritate my sensitive skin . Although I warn you to clean bath as soon as you’ve used them so they don’t stain

It depends on when you sent it out, some PO workers are so lazy that they never put the yellow slip in your PO Box saying you have a package, I had to call my headquarters office to report someone ,not putting the yellow slip in and 10 other people did the same thing.

The cricket ball is shiny so it can be skidded across the grass when bowled to confuse the batter. You will see bowlers rubbing it on their legs to retain to shine. Highland cows used to be all black & for many centuries were driven down into England from Scotland.
Some Lord crossed them with red Hereford cattle, so now most of them are also red.

"Young Winston" is quite a good film; I found it very watchable. It is however "Hollywood history" so don't take it too seriously.
The film is based on Winston's accounts of his adventures, but he was writing for the popular press, not the historical record, so yeah, BIG pinch of salt.

The Clifton Suspension Bridge was the creation of the famous English engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who was very much in the running when there was a tv programme a few years back for the people of the UK to vote for the greatest ever Brit.
I don't like heights but I've walked across the Severn Bridge and the Newport Transportet Bridge, but the Clifton Suspension Bridge made my knees buckle and I couldn't walk near the edge.

Just to clarify Wookey Hole which has a series of caves has no association with Star Wars as Lindsay wondered and is around 50, 000 years old. If you get time it's worth checking out.

I don't have a TV licence so haven't paid for years. Every two years I fill in an on-line form confirming the situation has not changed. There are no letters or visits. Your program is the first time I've seen the new notes!

When you get to the UK it may be worth getting a family NationalTrust membership which will give you access to all the places in that members book sent to you. Places like Blenheim and Chatsworth aren’t included but I believe you can get entry into these via another type of multiple venue ticket

Whitby Jet was formed in the Jurassic period from trees. It was mined to exhaustion during the Victorian era, when it became popular for mourning jewellery. It is now illegal to mine this gem. Genuine Whitby Jet is expensive.
The railways in america make me sad, as a massive rail fan.
Here in just Great Britain (ENG/WAL/SCO, not including NIR) we have over 2,550 stations. Sometimes even the smallest of villages, such as Tŷ Croes on the island of Anglesey, Wales or Manningtree in Essex with only 910 residents has a train station, that even rarely used gets a semi-regular service including sundays.
If you're ever here, i'd be happy to give you a tour of the London network, the Underground, Overground & DLR is really a fantastic display of British engineering going all the way back to the 1800s for some areas & stations, and its just organised chaos!
Also near me in Yorkshire the National Coal Mining museum, and you can go underground and explore the old now disused coal mine there, fascinating to see, but not for the claustrophobic for sure.
I’ll forgive the Cornwall comment Kerensa, I drove from Cornwall to Fort William in Scotland last year and Ohhhh myyyyyyyy Goddddddd…. STUNNING!!

Hi guys , regarding the crumpets , for the full flavour toast them till completely browned off , my ex had been eating them for years barely toasted, I cooked some for her and she was shocked how much better they taste when they are fully toasted

Aww, Lindsey (in relation to Sophia going to school) - made me cry 😢too! Seeing little children in reception (4-5) in school uniform is beyond cute but upsetting as the little darlings become independent. Seeing their enthusiasm when they tell you abut their school day makes everything worth it. Music is very important in UK schools and it certainly ignited my interest in music. Seeing my daughter play Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" on 3/4 size electric guitar at the end of Year 6 (another child played drums + parent played bass) is one of my most treasured memories. We had to substituted the F word with "messed" - she was so disappointed at not yelling out the F word in school!

@@reactingtomyroots I had a great deal of fun thinking up up and buying the things for your package this time. The school uniform is actually from the primary school I went to as a child so there is a bit of continuity there. Watching you open this present brought tears to my eyes. Poor Lindsey - I know exactly how she feels but schooling with other children has such benefits. It might be interesting for you (and us) to run a video comparison of the differences between US elementary school and UK primary school. I bet you’re very excited at starting Elementary School in August. I know I would be. I can remember starting Primary School (in the UK) myself but that was a LONG time ago as I’m older than Mommy and Daddy! I wore a similar school uniform to the one I sent for you (and I went to that school). Children in the UK start school in September so a month later than you. Your "Kindergarten" year is called “Year 1” in Primary School and is for children from 5-6 years old. Learning musical instruments is hard because you have to not play for a bit and practice a few minutes every single day. It is worth it because being able to play your favorite songs is fantastic. I started to learn piano at six years old and my Mommy and Daddy put the music letters on the piano keys with clear tape for me to learn them. Pianos are very expensive though so Mommy and Daddy might not be able to afford one and you cannot take them to camp for Summer Camp or if you become a Girl Scout. You can put a recorder (like the one you now have) in a school bag or carry a guitar or ukulele with you to camp.
For Mommy and Daddy:
I started piano in Year 1 (Kindergarten) but obviously traditional pianos are very expensive. We bought a Yamaha Clavinova (for my family) and electronic pianos have the great advantage that you can wear headphones whilst practising especially when children are in bed. You can also connect them to computers and do clever things. Take a look at MuseScore (free/open source software) and Ardour. My daughter learned piano and guitar. A half sized (classical or steel stringed) guitar is such a fantastic instrument for children as they can learn chords so quickly and can then learn fingerstyle and play favourite songs. You can also play very complicated pieces of course and take music grades (as I did). An instrument Steve might want to consider is a cajon drum box which is inexpensive, easy to use and very easy to carry about with you. You could then accompany Sophia with rhythm. If Lindsay relearned recorder, the three of you could play some very sophisticated music. Look up “Gamble Gold” by “Steeleye Span” on UA-cam which is for recorder, guitar and drums. It’s a fun rock/folk song about Robin Hood!
Once again, your channel is utterly fantastic. Please show is more of Jasper and Indiana on your @SteveAndLindsay channel. I have just been looking through “15 Best Things to Do in Jasper (Indiana)” on “The Crazy Tourist”. Your city is stunningly beautiful especially downtown Jasper and the Dubois County Courthouse. Maybe you could show us a journey on “Spirit of Jasper” and I had no idea you had an Amish community near you! What you have is just jaw dropping for British people. Being the center for woodworking is really interesting too. Bolton was famous for its cotton mills (being a rainy sort of area so the cotton broke less!) and cotton cloth was transported on the canal by narrowboat to Liverpool Docks. Alas all this has gone now. It might be interested for American viewers (and for us) to do a “Reacting to my Roots” reaction piece to canal holidays in the UK. My family has a 50 foot narrowboat called "Isabel" (named after my dear grandma - RIP) on the Leeds and Liverpool canal.

Lol, I'm wondering how long the 'wow' and 'that's awesome' will last when she starts learning recorder! I learned the trumpet for a while, the whole neighbourhood was happy when I gave it up!! lol Please let us see Sophia in her gift of a school uniform. My son's 35 now, I still remember the emotions of seeing my tiny wee boy in his uniform for the first time.
