Hello there The comment is older than the video because he either kept the video on unlisted (link only) or private for a few hours beforehand. Maybe so he could share it with a select amount of people first before making it fully public.
For the missing portal blocks, I would say it is likely that it is possible to partially break a portal when the portal blocks are misaligned: A portal block will try to communicate to its adjacent ones that it has been broken (so that they also break), but only the ones it actually touches, so if they're in a different orientation, that part won't actually break. This seems especially likely considering the surviving portal blocks have all their adjacent obsidian blocks still surviving
true, but they would update all surrounding blocks which would also update, so they’d also be destroyed, maybe this with some sort of “update suppression”
Although a good guess nether portals will check all 6 direcions for block updates. Meaning if u break a obsidian on a sideways portal the portal will still break. I think these portals have something to do with 1.9 cus iv seen simular portals on a server i played on that started as a 1.5 server. No clue how the blocks can get removed without triggering a block update to the obsidian or the portal tho.
A member of HermitCraft was able to remove all obsidian blocks and have only three portal blocks surrounded by diamond blocks, this was done using lag and chunk overloading; maybe the same thing happened here.
That was the update-suppression thing, you'd basically need a giant lag-machine nearby. But somehow with 2b2t sometimes running at single-digit tps rates, it might be something similar that happened there.
It's not really a lag machine... Minecraft has a hardcoded limit of how many updates a single player action can cause to happen instantly, in a single tick (I am oversimplifying, it's complicated), it is set to something like 1024 blocks. So if you make a lot of budded powered/golden rails ( rails that are turned on when they really shouldn't be), place more than 1024 next to each other, and then let the breaking of obsidian update the budded rails, you can prevent the obsidian from telling the portals to break, because the update limit is reached with the rails before the portals are updated. video by panda: ua-cam.com/video/mzfLHNeqjuY/v-deo.html&ab_channel=Panda4994
@@CodeMaker4 My point was basically: no visible traces of any supression update-mechanism in the vincinity. DocM77 used a machine to stop blocks from updating to make a 1 by 3 portal surrounded by diamond blocks. I’m pretty sure it’s called the Infinity Portal, and that may be how these portals were made.
SalC1, You can still make those partially broken nether portals in 1.16 Paper Spigot (Or could in October). I’m not sure of the mechanic behind it, but when making a nether portal based obsidian farm, I’ve gotten a ton of the corner blocks and the inverse of the other (with just 2 blocks). When they are made, the player is kicked with the message “Internal Server Error.” This happened in my creative test world and on the survival server I played on. It actually got quite annoying and I had to redesign the farm so the player could use auto reconnect. It seemed to only happen when the player was not aligned properly due to client-server desync. I never looked at the server logs for it but it shouldn’t be too hard to recreate.
The horse stash you found in the video is DogukanAdal's (the turkish guy that found the sky valkyria you explained at your last video) what a quincidence
My theory: The portals were made in pre 1.7, obviously. Then the game was updated and just like you had showed, the portal frames were missing (but not actually gone as they still emit light). Then, players started breaking some or most of the obsidian, causing the "illegal" invisible portal blocks to update and dissapear, but not creating a chain reaction like normal portal blocks because they aren't at that point. This is confirmed by all the existing portal blocks still having obsidian next to it. Then, the game was updated again causing these illegal portal frames to appear again, just as you have showed, but the previous updated illegal framed stayed deleted, forever.
That reverse portal bug happened to me when trying to upgrade the Minecraft: The Journey world over to 1.20, i converted it to Anvil in 1.8 (because 1.12 didn't want to work) and upgraded over to 1.20 and these reverse portals were appearing on existing portals. On 1.8 these portals were blank
Large mushrooms will overwrite portal blocks whilst keeping the portal lit. You can also use large mushrooms to delete end portal blocks whilst keeping the end portal open for interworld item transport for farms and such. Might explain how they got rid of obsidian and kept the portal open.
It’s happened to me, when a blaze fire ball go through the portal and explodes on the other side. There will only be a couple of portal blocks on the overworld. Then you can destroy the ones not touching the portal block and it won’t destroy it.
i think i have a possible solution to how the broken portals are made. if you put a lot of banners on an obsidian block of a portal (so you put a banner on the block and then a banner on the banner and so on), and i mean a LOT of banners you have to put so many that you even have to load more chunks in the direction. then if you break the obsidian, the update order is so that the last banner gets updatet first and then all the other banners until the portal gets updatet, but because there are so many updates in one tick the server just doesn't update the portal and you broke the obsidian without breaking the portal. maybe that is how they made the portals where some of the blocks are missing.

Surprisingly, I've encountered glitch portals like this in singleplayer too. When I found my old Minecraft world that I used to play on from 2012-2015 and explored it, my overworld portal seemed fine, but my nether portal was actually missing the bottom 2 portal blocks. I remember I created the world in 1.4 and played it up until 1.8.5, before taking a break from Minecraft and coming back to it in like 2019. I think it's kinda cool that I have a small remnant in my Survival world that you can only get from specific versions.
Great video, SalC1! I know it's an old one, but i think that the two 'unexplainable' nether portals have something to do with update suppression (aka that giant machine with rails, etc. that lags out mc). For all i know, it could be a Paper-Spigot bug, the world may never know.
Pretty sure the broken portals are probably the result of update suppression. If too many block updates occurs when breaking the obsidian then that can prevent the portal from getting broken. There's glitches to do this with powered rails or with placing thousands of banners on each other.
There also were similar bugs with doors getting messed up when old worlds were updated to newer versions. Especially double doors on Beta maps often got messed up when updated to newer versions.
The portals possibly could have been made by the following theory: When the person that made the portal on the overworld, they didn't go thru it, but there was someone on the other side of the nether that had the chunks partially loaded, so knowing this, that's why so many of the portals were near the border of chunks.
You can break the obsidian safely, abd only the flipped portalblocks right next to it will break, that is how the other portals were made. You can try that in singelplayer, when using a debugstick on a portal
Each value of block depend of the bloc number, when it generates de portal just add +1 to go to the other block, but when the block is set to -1 the middle block is now 0 and by defaut it means the portal face another way, then the next on is +1 and the portal is normal again. The player who generated the portal just died when he activated it, so the variable value was set quickly to 0, and this is the same one that generate the portal. The glitch also appears when you generate a baby sheep and that baby take the portal, because the entity value is always -1, you can see the reversed sheep when he crosses the portal just before the teleportation.
Yesterday on 2b2t, I found this bed and glitched/illegal nether portal roughly 30-40k blocks from spawn. They were hidden underneath the ocean in what appears to be a natural mineshaft system. I didn't have enough time to check it out more thoroughly or to leave a sign, but thankfully saved the cords for a future return. For just getting into minecraft 1 week ago, I was so ecstatic to come across something like this.
For the portals that are missing parts I think the most likely explanation would be the players reaction to the minecraft update causing the portals to be 'gone' but not. I don't know for sure but I imagine trying to light the obsidian would not work as the portal blocks would still be there, some players probably thought breaking some blocks and putting em back again would fix that but probably got DCed either due to a script false flagging something and kicking the player or hausemaster just happening to update paper while people where still trying to fix their portals. Note that there are no portal blocks where there is obsidian missing, you can test this but I think the bugged portal blocks only stay when there is *either* 2 obsidian blocks *or* there is one obsidian block *and one portal block* adjacent to it. Hence the single block portal stayed until someone broke the obsidian above it (you might of missed it, but you can see it in the video; the top obs is missing @6:08), which this would also explains why the portals like @1:46 haven't destroyed themselves. In theory, while the portals are in the bugged state, if you broke one of the middle-side- blocks no portals would be destroyed. Feel free to prove this theory wrong though!
The most likely explanation for this is the dragon egg bedrock removal glitch. If I'm not mistaken that didn't block update things which allows for glitched portals. They could also have been made from EXTREME lag. Like, 0.1tps lag. If there are enough block updates in one tick the game will skip processing additional ones. The EMP machine does this. On 9b9t there are lots of portals with weird geometry and things besides obsidian around them, this was caused by a plugin that freezes chunks when the server lags. It also let you get floating water and lava blocks. Could be a similar thing on 2b.
Your research on portals was truly so in-depth - changing versions and swapping to a paper spigot server was genius too. I could hear you talk about anything for hours and stay intrigued. Great job on this video!!
honestly im not surprised by cursed nether portals. all you have to do is destroy part of them without causing a block update/ i managed to do it easily on this modded server that had magic and stuff. i know thats very obviously easier, but it shows that theres definitely vanilla ways to do it
2b2t archaeologists be like: "You can tell the date of this specimen by the presence of this savanna biome coupled with the lack of diorite in the ground below."
8:43 you used to be able to break blocks from a nether portal before, just as you entered the nether you would break a block, i still can do that on my xbox 360 And for the one that had cutted off portal frames, thats from that glitch, and then was updated to 1.8, making some of them disappear

these types of portals are everywhere on pocket edition servers.

There also were similar bugs with doors getting messed up when old worlds were updated to newer versions. Especially double doors on Beta maps often got messed up when updated to newer versions.
SalC1 is truly a person of the blocks
That was the smoothest sponsor transition I’ve ever seen
The portals possibly could have been made by the following theory:
When the person that made the portal on the overworld, they didn't go thru it, but there was someone on the other side of the nether that had the chunks partially loaded, so knowing this, that's why so many of the portals were near the border of chunks.
you and fits dashlane segways are so clean
I love watching SalC1 while waiting in the queue
Really looking forward to seeing what oddities will come as a result of the map being moved to the latest Minecraft.
You know its gonna be a great day when SalC1 uploads.
Could be a similar thing on 2b.
salc1: **sees very illegal portal that isnt in 2b2t**
salc1: what? thats illegal
Anarchy Server with no rules but every second video is about forbidden things on 2b2t. Welcome to this channel
Can we all just take a second to imagine what 2b2t would've looked like if there were NO queue time...
and infinite memory space
That was a very smooth transition to a sponsorship, Mr. Sal.
Your research on portals was truly so in-depth - changing versions and swapping to a paper spigot server was genius too. I could hear you talk about anything for hours and stay intrigued. Great job on this video!!
honestly im not surprised by cursed nether portals. all you have to do is destroy part of them without causing a block update/
i managed to do it easily on this modded server that had magic and stuff. i know thats very obviously easier, but it shows that theres definitely vanilla ways to do it
I've accidentally created broken nether portals while updating single player worlds
Nice, sonic unleashed music
That's actually the most creative sponsor ad I saw
Sal's just here doing nether portal archaeology
2b2t archaeologists be like: "You can tell the date of this specimen by the presence of this savanna biome coupled with the lack of diorite in the ground below."
8:43 you used to be able to break blocks from a nether portal before, just as you entered the nether you would break a block, i still can do that on my xbox 360
And for the one that had cutted off portal frames, thats from that glitch, and then was updated to 1.8, making some of them disappear
