Artillery Cares More About Their Horses?

- Did the US Artillery track horse care better than the cavalry? The quarterly ordnance returns show that the cavalry did not include these details in the ordnance returns. But the Cavalry did. So, where did the cavalry track these items? In a different form?

A cavalry trooper without a horse becomes infatry. An atileryman without a horse becomes a horse.
This was basically my first thought paired with the Cavalry probably went through horses a lot faster and it would have just been a waste of logistics
See, the thing is those artillery guys had way more math nerds. Keeping track of stuff was just something they did.
True. Same for the engineers.
Administrative mission creep--we're already geeking out about cannonballs, fuses, and tins of axle grease for the wheel hubs, might as well add the crap for the horses to the list
An unkind, but not untrue statement…..
Back in the day at west point, the top of the class usually made engineers. The second highest groupings made arty
Well one was a bunch of fast charging adrenaline junkies, the other had engineers for officers who were nerds obsessed with math and calculations.
I think that explains it
Yep
Also, different use of horses. Harness horses instead of saddle horses
@@robertsandberg2246 Not sure if it was the practice in the Civil War but, traditionally, a lot of artillery horses were both. You'd have a team of 6-8 horses pulling the guns and caissons (ammo carts) and the gun crew would ride on them as they went. Wikipedia picture linked below.

@@silverjohn6037 I have heard of what's called "postillion riding" , riding a horse while it's hitched to the artillery.
Artillery units were issued the strongest horses that became available since they were expected to pull cannons and cassions long distances and around battles as fast as possible. They received the best care and fed only quality fodder and grains to have the energy needed to perform their tasks. The next most important animals were the mules pulling the Union Army's supply wagons. They had to be strong with the endurance to keep pace with the soldiers on the march. They also were fed quality fodder and grains to give them the energy needed to do that. Calvary horses were considered to be expendable so were fed the lower quality fodder and grains. The Confederate States started the war without an ample supply of healthy draft animals to pull their supply wagons and without a widespread source of quality fodder and grains to feed them while following the troops on the march. The Rebels supply wagons were often days behind the marching troops due to the horses lacking the energy to go as fast and needing to graze along the way since none of the wagons were carrying fodder and grains for them to eat since those were for the artillery horses.
It's probably because artillery has a larger logistical footprint and where they are in order of march. Just add a few more wagons, men, and paperwork.
A lot of people said that the horse had more brains than the cavalry trooper.
😂
Horses usually learned the bugle calls first.
Who said this?
Have you ever had to walk? Yes. Now, have you ever had to carry your own shit....plus more? Yeah they knew the worth.
It's because artillery relies far more on the logistics train than cavalry.
(Ordinance is from Latin for "put in order" and would today be called a regulation. Somewhere along the line, when referring to military equipment, the "i" got dropped.) "Ordnance Returns were quarterly reports submitted by each regiment of the Union Army during the Civil War. These reports meticulously documented the quantity and condition of military ordnance, including weapons, ammunition, and related equipment. The Union Army recognized the importance of maintaining accurate inventories to ensure proper logistics, distribution, and strategic planning." While I can believe Cavalry and Infantry units may not have kept such a detailed list, EVERY unit has a Table of Organization and Equipment (TO&E), whatever its name, and keeps senior HQ apprised of losses.
Brandon just standing there, being all handsome
Hey, he's gotta get paid for doing something 😅
I think it's cool they even had Opium on that manifest👍
Needed high test grades to be in the Artillery
Low grades Cavary
Here in Illinois, there is a group of guys who have a 'battery forge' which is a blacksmith shop wagon meant for fixing and mending equipment as needed
I would expect Calvary to be way more busy than artillery. Artillery during marching and combat was busy but 300 days out of the year, they were in camp. But, the Calvary was always on the go. And, I imagine the Calvary switched horse a lot more due to the miles they put on the horses
That what one would expect.
But its basically a Rabbit v Turtle race.
The Cav had alot of time doing NOTHING since they were so fast compare to everyone else. With there actual roles being very... simple to do. Largely was riding along takjng notes and scouting.
While the Arty was a slow ponderous deal that was constantly moving to keep up. While their jobs force them to gave to think and math less they put too much powder in the cannon and make it a pipebomb. And if they lost a Horse...
Well they lost a cannon, Cause you not moving those by hand.
While the Cav can get off pug all his stuff in his back and walk to get a new one
A horse is a horse of course of course!
Where can I get an over/greatcoat like that?
I always figured that for the Cav, everything but the horse itself was expendible. For the Arty, only the ammo and powder were.
Cause the cavarly needed it constantly and would have been constantly using it up, less paperwork means you can get it easier when you need it.
Yes. The key here is that "lots of stuff to keep track of" part. Sure both groups have complex supply demands but field guns need large quantities of explosives - and you need to manage that right. Old ammunition does funny things. So the management trickles down - because those guys kept a record of everything. That's my guess.
Because gunbunnies are smarter than cavalrymen; a truth that still holds to this day.
Super interesting! Thanks for posting!
Ouch! That hurts me personally.
Probably has to do with the life expectancy of the horse
A Very *cavalier* approach of the cavalry
The answer did not surprise me. That's exactly what I thought it would be.
Yup one of those guys was David Charles chase my ancestor
As an old “red leg”, Pershing captain, being unable to deploy because of down prime movers was career ending if not jail time. You learn quickly to know everything about your gear or your rank quickly became “civilian “.
What was the casualty rates of horses during the US Civil War?
The reason not to track supplies and services. Somebody is embezzling money.
I think Calvary was always in the fight when skirmishes occurred, as well as always scouting. I perceive the infantry always plunking along with a more steady planned lifestyle.
Artillery had the staff, cavalry didn't.
Well as a Cavalry Trooper your horse was more likely to be killed in battle than the Artillery horses...just saying
Cavalry will always have those supplies as already stated a cavalry man without a horse infantry, yadda yadda. The artillery would be more likely to those resources being cut should things get that desperate. I'm sure that's not the only reason, but I would wager it's a pretty big part of it.
The artillery were all professional soldiers they had to go to school also artillery had easier access to maintenance wagons and the US cavalry we're mainly light cavalry Ergo everything you need goes on the horse
Probably Calvary was always moving fast and hard no time for all that
Was it because in cavalry the use of that stuff was far more common or fluid then with artillery?
Because calvary was fighting men, artillery is a bunch of paper pushers. It doesn't take much in the way of brains to ride into the enemy firing small arms, it takes serious math to fire artillery just once. Totally different type of troops.
My guess is horses were important for moving artillery meanwhile cav horses went down alot more so the Cav generally had fresh horses more than artillery
Cuz worst that happens to cavalry is they walk on their own. Would you like to carry all the shit needed for artilery without horses?
Arty are nerds and the cav are chads
Individual accountability is your answer.
I can guarantee that the ONLY reason artillery kept track and cavalry didn’t was the relationships between the cavalry commander and his logistics (S/G-4) Officer verses the artillery commander and his logistics officer…..
There is lots of corruption in third world militaries (and 150 years ago we were as third world as anywhere else not France or Britain), so likely one was keeping logistics records either to hide the corruption or to prevent the corruption; while the other was not keeping records because he was hiding his corruption OR was so beyond reproach that his commander didn’t require it of him and he didn’t need paperwork to keep track for himself……
Need to iron your PJs boys.
Who kept track?🤔
The Air Force?😉
Why so curious at this late date?
If you can't spell ordnance you should steer clear of using an unrelated word as a substitute
REDLEGS!!!!
That's not even a cavalry Sabre that's an infantryman's sword. You couldn't even pull that thing out on horseback. A cavalry Sabre is more curved.
Not that hard to figure out, horses pulled the guns and heavy ammunition
Smarter than the Cav
I wonder what British oil is.
Probably linseed oil used today to help keep horses energy up.
Horses need fiber, oil, and salt licks
big surprise the biggest dorks in the army are the best at keeping track of shit
OCD.
That’s easy the cav can’t write or read 😂I know this cause they always late to a battle cant e a map and get angry in meetings
In the what? Orrrningshturns?? What??
Because you didn't care enough to answer the question, I sure won't be watching any more of your videos.
You had a chance to be generous, and said 'Nahhh'.
Because they were a bunch of nerds
Bad click bait lol
Always believe cosplayers
You could also just look at the documents
Who f-ing cares wow. Last thing I care about is this
Cared enough to take the time to write a comment! Lol.
