FarmLady, thank you for sharing your experience. What is the average initial weight of fish at the grow-out stage? What is the mortality rate during that stage?
Thank you so much for the informative lectures you so tirelessly give us and we really enjoy them big time as we are trying to start our first backyard fish tank farming however, we have a question; Does the equation 10ltrs= 1kg, is it standard for all types of fish rather, does it apply to Tilapia fish as well or it's just the equation for Catfish?
Different fish have different stocking densities. (This depends on your ability to treat the water i.e. remove waste, add O2, manage PH and water temp)
Thank you very much for sharing this. Which means from your calculations, my pond that I have being estimating to take up 3,000 fishes up to 1 kg can actually take up to 7,928 fishes comfortably. Because each of my earthen pond is 35ft by 20ft by 4ft (the actual volume of water). I think I have to start thinking of stocking at least 5 thousand fishes in each of my ponds. I will be updating my process on my channel as well as the farm progresses. Thanks once again for sharing.
From experience 10,000 is too small to raise 1000kg except it is a recirculatory pond. It is better to use 20,000=1kg. If not your water gets dirty easily. Fish will not grow.
Do try it sir, it won't give you the required result you want. Reason 1. Is because in an earthen pond, it is not only your cat fish that live and share the available space oxygen in your earthen pond, there are other biological matters that compete with your fishes in terms of space, light and dissolve oxygen. 2. If your pond dimension like you said is 35ft x 20ft x 4ft, it means the volume of your pond is 2800 ft. This in liters will be 79296L. Judging by shikemis explanation, you should be able to stock about 7929 pieces of catfish. But this won't be realistic because the following questions need to be asked an noted. (I) . Is the water volume in your earthen pond at the exact amount of 79296L? (II). Can you determine the amount of other biological matters competing with your fishes? Unlike in concrete and plastic pond whose waters are frequently changed thus destroying the cycles of other living things in the pond. (III). Are all the fishes stocked of the same weight 1kg? Some will obviously be 1.5 and above though, some fishes may also be around 800g. 3. So to be on a safer side, and to prevent over crowding of the pond, you can use the standard of about 15L = 1kg or 20L = 1kg. With the above given, you should be able to comfortably stock between 4000 to 5000 pieces of fish. With the confidence of your fishes growing well and making you more money. Thanks
Thank you so much. This is both educative and real time applicable. I have a question. If my target is to grow juveniles to say 100 or 200 grams in a cylindrical plastic before transferring to the grow out pond, do I use simple proportion? That is 1 litre per fish or 2 litres per fish respectively?
Hello farmlady Good afternoon, Evening thou am educated but I still find it difficult to understand the simple calculation you just gave out concerning density of catfish to stock in a pond at a go, Now my question is how many fish can I stock in 3000 litre of of pond?
Different fish have different stocking densities. (This depends on your ability to treat the water i.e. remove waste, add O2, manage PH and water temp) I am sure the young lady will help you to determine the proper stocking density base on the type of fish you are raising in your pond. Reach out to her.
thanks for this info, but 1 question. if i try want to do 3 layers fishes, i mean the different fishes which grow at top layer, middle layer, bottom layer, can i make the calculation as 3x ?
Unless you know what you are doing around the compatibility of various fish species, this not something a beginner should be attempting. Some fish species are not compatible and should not be mixed. Reach out to the young lady, from watching her videos, she has demonstrated her knowledge.

Thank you for your video. My question is I have a 15 x 10 x 4 tarpaulin tank, The plan is to grow to 300-350grams of fish. How many fish should I shock in this tank? The other question is what is the recommended Fill-Line for such tank size?
170 fishes for that size of tank... Fill line should be to the brim(impossible). Then you have to reduce the water level and recalculate to having 150 fishes to target your 350grams goal...Bon jornee
No please. Even if you'll want to eat it, allow the ovulin effect to wear off, give it a month. But ideally you shouldn't eat it cause it can still be used to spawn another set of eggs as it takes 3months for the fish to have another set of eggs after the first spawning

As the young lady stated, 10l=1kg (Specific to catfish). For every 10L of water in the pond/fish tank, it can support 1kg of fish biomass. Go back through the video and substitute you numbers for the one she used. As a fish farmer, you need to know how to arrive at the correct stocking density by calculating it based on the pond/fish tank volume as it relates to the fish biomass (weight).
