I hoped for comments which addressed the termination of the coincidental tweeter/midrange design of previous ELAC designs and this one, but none. Since ELAC Unifi speakers are on sale, does that mean Andrew Jones’s unique design emphasizing coherence, is out? This review focused on frequency response on axis, which can be achieved without linear phase response, over space. What about comparing the older Debut vs the 3.0 off axis. Or explain why technically this new design doesn’t require coincidence.
We have a great hobby. Last week was a near 10k item and today, a review of something at 5 percent of that. There is something out there for everyone and for every budget. I got started with baby Klipsch bookshelves in 1991 for $299, which I thought was all the money in the world. And now I have BW 702 S2 signatures. Thanks Robinsons for showing all ends of the budget spectrum and everything in between.
You may have missed one! There was a review between the Mc gear and this one for a sub $1000 stereo receiver. You'll find it here: ua-cam.com/video/1qsyX-EhRk0/v-deo.html
I can honestly say I think your reviews have gotten better as time goes on, which is not something I can say for many channels. You're able to convey the strengths of a product but still point out the differences which may or may not be bad, but I do see you point out glaring issues appropriately. Oh, and the tower version of these speakers may very well be my next buy. Cheers!
I'm a guy with very limited funds to allocate to my hobby so my work-around is usually going vintage or at least well used (which many times keeps leading me back to Polk, Snell, DQ's). Value always being the leading factor. I also love large bookshelves. These are going to be my first brand new purchase in about a decade. They just offer too much for the money for me to do my usual waiting a couple years to grab them used. I'm excited to have a brand new pair, and excited that they are these Elacs.
These sounded great at THESHOW. The Debut 3.0 acoustical designer was Skarff Keibach in Germany. The Debut 3.0 project was a combination of folks from ELAC's R&D Facility in Toronto and Germany.
Glad to see that Elac is holding up. They were my first foray into the Hifi world with the original UB5. I actually still use them with a Marantz PM 8006 in my home gym and they are awesome. When I upgraded my living room setup to Klipsch Forte IV and a Mac7200, I couldn’t bring myself to get rid of them, so I stored them away until we built our home gym and I am glad I did. I think the Elac brand is awesome and the Debut and Unifi lines are a really good bang for the buck. They are the brand I always recommend when people ask me about a good starting point in the Hifi world.
I auditioned a couple pairs of Elac bookshelfers about five years ago for my smaller office system. I enjoyed everything about them and knew they'd never compete with my powered towers. I am very happy to see and hear they still continue to be a great sounding speaker at a very reasonable price. Excellent review and excellent comparisons.
Holy crap, thats one of the best, it not THE best measurements Ive seen on this channel, nearfield and in room. I wouldnt worry about that slight rise in the highest octaves, that could easily be solved with toe out. The lower frequencies looks like it is shelved down a bit so near wall placement is possible. That linear in room downward slope is to die for. Even without AJ, Elac continues to make great speakers, objectively and subjectively. This would definitely be my next pair of speakers for my small room. Great review Andrew!
I just bought the debut 3 63 book shelf speakers. Paired with rz50 and rsl speedwoofer mkll…. I’m f ing blown away. I’m stilling waiting for my 63 center speaker 😂. Will move slowly towards 5.2.4 setup. Couldn’t be happier.
Great review! Just heard these at a local audio store. Honestly they possessed more detail and depth than I thought possible at this price point. Speaker positioning is important, but makes these gems sing. Paired with a 12" sub, they were amazing.
Another great review, and, as is rarely the case, I can agree with you from my own experience. I pre-ordered the Debut 3.0s, and have had them for about a week. In fact, I listened to your review on them through my home theatre system. I will say that I thought they sounded much better after a day or so of breaking in. Beyond that, they are just fantastic. I couldn't be happier. with their clarity and performance. As a 2.1 system with an ELAC sub, they are great with rock and classical music, and they handily cover TV and movie dialogue without a center channel. In fact, I had pre-ordered the matching center from B&H as it was sold out on the ELAC website. However, after listening to these for a couple of days, I cancelled my order. I don't feel like it's necessary.
My ELAC journey began with the stand mount B6, which is an exceptional low cost introduction into audiophile loudspeakers, though they were decidedly rolled off on top. I’ve since graduated through the Uni-fi floorstander and center and onto the Uni-fi 2.0 series of floorstander, center and bookies. Thought the B&W’s were fatiguingly bright and unnatural for my tastes. And Klipsch are definitely an acquired taste. I don’t have the liquidity for comparable 5.1 setups with Sonus Faber or Focal, so I’m quite pleased to be with the neutral, natural sounds of Andrew Jones’ masterpieces.
@@scottmackenzie6699 They certainly didn't hurt! I feel bad for Quinn, who seems plagued with injuries; that said, it was nice to see Arch get more than a series or two, especially if Ewers is going to be out for any length of time. Heck, even our third stringer got some time on the field.
Looks like a winner! I am not a B & W fan, as I like to hear what the artist and studio personnel decided the recording should sound like, not a speaker manufacturer's playful interpretation of that recording, but I digress. Anyway, nice to see a speaker be more ACCURATE at a much lower price point, and for Elac to keep on putting out good product after they lost their version of LeBron James. Thoughts on how this stacks up to the KEF Q350?
I have change my Emotiva T1 floor standing speaker to a par of ELAC old bookshelves and I couldn't be happier. Those ELAC have the purest highs I've ever heard. The beat Emotiva Airmotive, B&W DM303, Jamo Concert series, all JBL stuffs, KEF Q series, MA bronze and silver series by far.
I really enjoyed this review, especially the comparisons. Comparing what you are reviewing to other products makes our decisions much easier and cuts through the BS that the various manufacturers toss out there. Your reviews are such a breath of fresh air, and I look forward to each one, even if they involve a category that I am not currently interested in purchasing.
Happens every time. I just set up my new Polk r200. Found them on sale for 550 and could not help mysef. Coming from a pair of es20 (which I like). Now here these are for 450. But I am not returning the r200's. Because they are awesome and I am lazy. Nice review, wish I had seen it earlier (maybe, I am really digging the r200's). Cheers.
There are always new speakers coming out. Don't second guess yourself after you purchase a good pair of speakers. Sit back and enjoy the music and movies...
I am willing (and eager) to buy these but will also consider the UniFi Reference. Which one should I buy? I'm guessing the new ones are the best value but the UniFi's are a bit better; but are they "better" enough to spend the extra money?
I’m not a fan of the one man making a company shine kind of thing. A great leader coming in to put the company into a good path and using that companies talents is great. And Elac is a damn good example of that exact thing. No arguments against Andrew Jones amazing skills and talent, and I think his biggest one is bringing the company together and using what they have available to create amazing things. Having a speaker like this at its price is amazing and I’m glad to see it because it puts way more pressure on other manufacturers to focus on lower prices equipment and drives the competition which is ultimately always good for us the consumers. Good way to put others on notice. I hope we see more of that from Elac in the entire price range they offer. It would be awesome to also put this pair against MoFi pair of similar price designed by Mr. Jones and see just how well he oiled that Elac machine! Great review and video as always! Hope everyone is having a lovely Sunday and Ms. Kristi is feeling better every day!
The modern apartament cries for a proper 2.1 system, two nice bookshelves and a nice sub are enough for most. A nice DSP that can create a good surround image from two channels (I use my PC and Peace Equalizer/APO for that purpose) can create a great music and movie environment.
Hi Andrew! Great review. I'm wondering if you could compare the sound of the Debut 3.0 with the Uni-Fi 2.0 bookshelves. Also wondering if you've heard any rumblings of a Uni-Fi 3.0 line... Thanks! Love the channel!
Same question. I have RP600Mii, and was looking for something a little more neutral and with more holographic characteristics. Always been drawn to the Uni-Fi 2.0 bookshelf’s, and was even looking at the Emotiva XB2s. The debut 3.0s are in the conversation too, nor. Ugh
Love the review. I have been waiting on this release and subsequent review from you. Love some of my older Elac bookshelves and looking to audition this new lineup.
Hi sir i bought these elac 3.0 db 63 after watching your review. Pls suggest me a good av receiver or a integrated amplifier which gives a good crystal clear sound with deep bass to enjoy in a 2.1 home theatre set up. Pls reply sir.
Another great review. These latest ELAC's are getting plenty of good review vibes. As someone who's reviewed hundreds of speakers Andrew, I'd be very interested in hearing your thoughts on good old fashioned paper cones delivering more natural tone and timbre vs metal, kevlar or other exotic materials employed by speaker manufacturers over the past couple of decades? Looking forward to Friday's Unplugged. Thanks.
I bought Elac 2.0 a few years ago . I tried them a few days a found them a little boring to listen too. I than replaced them for Triangle Bro3 and finally exchanged those aswell with Totem Rainmakers ...
same, had the Elac Unify 2.0 and sold them as they had nothing special for me. Used them for at least 50-100 hours. I used the same amp to compare them with Klipsch RP600M first gen. There were some small diffs, bit in terms of clarify not much.
Thank you for the review! This speaker is throwing off my future upgrade plans. I have been considering the LS50 Metas. (Saving up my money.) I have the Debut 6.2, which I really like, and the RP600M II, which I also like. But this speaker sounds like it may require me to rethink my plans. Regardless of price difference. I appreciate your reviews. I think you may be the best of the reviewers (x2, thank you, Kristi, as well) when it comes to speakers. You do a great job of sound description and delineating your preferences. Because of this I find myself giving greater credence to your opinions re: speakers. Also, the combination of opinions (sometimes wildly different) is wonderfully helpful. And since I'm from the South, again, Thanks Y'all!
I see people asking for comparison to the Polk R200s, although I think you did that speckled throughout the review, so perhaps just sum up your comparison in that regard in one contiguous segment next week? That said, I request a comparison with KEFs, either Q- or preferably R-series. I heard parts of comparisons with KEFs throughout this review, but again, a comprehensive and contiguous set of statements about comparisons to KEFs would be appreciated. And I am especially curious in a KEF comparison to compare imaging, because in my experience, KEFs are imaging champs, both near- and far-field.
Yes I’ve been waiting for this one! It’s refreshing to see an affordable speaker that looks good, I’ll be cross shopping these with monitor audio silver 100, up to kef r3 meta. If only these came in other finish options like white 🤞
Hell. I bought the 100’s silver last week. Extremely disappointed. I’ve tried 3 different amps. And dacs…It’s bright, but not just that. They have no warmth and I get tired after about 8 songs, I stop listening. They do a good job with live recordings. Good luck. I’ve been very happy with the q acoustics 3030i’s-same price range.
Thanks for the review! Looking forward to Christie's take as well. How's the quality/fit and finish of the vinyl wrap? Like at the seams, edges, and where it meets the rubberized front baffle. Also does the vinyl finish look convincing? My DBR62 oak vinyl looks so fake, but I suspect it may be harder to tell with this black finish...
Which would you recommend for Rock / Metal? ELAC Debut 3.0 (5.5” or 6.5”) vs RP600M / 500M (versions 1 or 2). Looking for excitement. I have Emotiva B1+ and think they’re too tame / linear
I just bought these a month ago and paired them with an Elac Subwoofer. Once you get the room placement just right for all three speakers and wait for the “break in” period, they sound fantastic! Now I’m thinking about the Wharfedales Lintons. Why? Why not! Any comments or suggestions?
I'm glad to see ELAC delivering an updated tweeter mounting. I find the previous debut references too unattractive to imagine removing the grills. I am pleasantly surprised that the new DBR63 kept the price neutral and the performance uncompromised. It's interesting to see the efficiency improve while bass extension technically also improved, with a new product at the same price. I'd be curious to learn how this was achieved. Inflation has hit some competitors as well, adding to the things that make this product surprising.
Great review Andrew. Question I have the Klipsch RP600MII driven by a Wiim Amp and a 10" Klipsch wireless sub in my bedroom setup. I love it. Would replacing the RP600MIIs with the ELAC Debut 3.0s be an upgrade or not worth the trouble?
All the reviews so far on the Debut 3 lead me to think it's worth a look / listen , but I don't see it in Australia yet and so , waiting , of course it's l likely going to be a "bit" more expensive here as well ." Thanks for tweaking my impatience , he, he, .
I’m at the edge of my seat ready to hear your comparison of the Elac Debut 2.0 b6.2. Is the difference so different from neutral or vocal clarity (of the 2.0s) that I should upgrade? Currently using as fronts for my living room HT on the RZ-50.
While i find it interesting that you test these as part of a system with a price in the ~$3.5k to $6.5k range (speaker+sub+amp/streamer), i would think these would be much more likely to be an aspirational purchase to go with say, a wiim amp or something else that gives them an all in price of ~$1.5k. Would components in that price range significantly alter the sound?
Great review Andrew, as always! Liked all the comparisons too. A pair to put on my list when my daughter(s) go to build their own first systems. Get well soon Kristi!!
Andrew if you went traveling for a month, let's say on an island and could take a stereo HiFi system with you, what would you choose? The catch is it has to fit in a regular travel case. Also you should review the new Pro-Ject Audio Speaker Box 3 E and 3 E Carbon.
The Debut 2.0 is good, though I didn't like the original quite as much (from brief demos I had of both). These always seem to be good budget offerings though.
Hi, excellent review! As of today between the Debut 3.0, LSX II , svs prime wireless pro, Kanto tuK What would be best for a nearfield desktop 2.1 speaker for my PC, they will be paired with an SVS micro sub. They will play video games and music. So they will rarely be playing extremely loud. Dont take in account the $ just wich one is the best sounding for that setup. Thanks
made the mistake of going to a Crutchfield store, heard the r200's powered by the Mcintosh MAC7200 and sheesh! (wanted to check out the r700s but didn't have them in the showroom) The sounds emitting from that setup was heavenly lol I mean it better for an $8k amp but still. The wife agreed and understands the hobby now. I've been using my fives for awhile (with a sub) now after hearing that I know in the future I'll want to upgrade to the r700s. But I'll have to be patient for now. No questions or anything but thanks for the honest reviews!
I have the Elac Carina bookshelf and also the new cerwin-vega LA165 bookshelf . At $270 the cerwin-vega LA165 holds its own and does somethings better than the Carina's at 1/4 the price and compete well with them...the new LA series vega are crazy good in the price range...the LA44 at $500 best bang for buck in home audio. 3 way slim tower.
@@KristiWright I never liked their sound. But I do like their looks. Hoping to someday find a good amp for them. I’m still searching for something that I really like.
Great review Andrew. Question - I have the Klipsch RP600MII driven by a Wiim Amp and a 10" Klipsch wireless sub in my bedroom setup. I love it. Would replacing the RP600MIIs with the ELAC Debut 3.0s be an upgrade or not worth the trouble?☝
Q: did you just use 1 sub? or 2? Would an AV Receiver be able to be a good option w/ these speaker for music? (i.e. using an AV receiver for the TV surround with in ceiling and then shifting to the ELACs for 2 channel music times). Thinking about getting a newer Denon AVR or Marantz.
I got a set of 9.0.4 Debut 2.0s. They are great, especially for music. Since I went with the Klipsch RP line, they are in my basement waiting to be sold. The F6.2 AND the F5.2 have quite a punch.

same, had the Elac Unify 2.0 and sold them as they had nothing special for me. Used them for at least 50-100 hours. I used the same amp to compare them with Klipsch RP600M first gen. There were some small diffs, bit in terms of clarify not much.
Elac is a top value brand . Thx you guys )) ...
Thanks for watching!
Get well soon Kristi. We miss your friendly comic bantering. 😊
Thanks for this very informative review and glad to see a product easily available to a lot of folks even in this not so stellar economy. Well done!
Thanks for watching!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews You're very welcome! I do enjoy your videos.
Awesome review as usual! How do they compare directly to the Polk r200's?
My thoughts exactly
Also, the 100’s are good at near-field listening.
What about ELAC Debut 3.0 vs ProJect Speaker Box 5 S2 and 50th Anniversary Speakers Polk R200AE
Is the KEF Q150 comparable? They're back on sale for $350/pair.
I just bought these a month ago and paired them with an Elac Subwoofer. Once you get the room placement just right for all three speakers and wait for the “break in” period, they sound fantastic!
Now I’m thinking about the Wharfedales Lintons. Why?
Why not!
Any comments or suggestions?
comparison envy always happens. I have these too and with a sub you're not losing squat vs a Linton. ;)
@ Thank you for your honest opinion.👍🏼
I’m still messing around with stands and room placement. It keeps getting better and better each time.
DB63, not DBR63. Although I'm very curious how the DBR63 will turn out as I love my DBR62s.
Always great, concise reviews!!
Thanks, James.
Looks similar to the PMC prodigy 1. Is the PMC’s on your review list, Andrew?
Not at the moment.
Andrew, this new ELAC vs Q Acoustics 5020 bookshelf? Are the Q 5020s worth double the price or would you stick with the ELAC and save your money??
Thanks for the SC. I'm noting the question for Friday's Unplugged!
Great Sunday Everyone!
Hello and thanks for joining us yesterday.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews was a bit late due to work, but always here !
another pairing I’d like to see is the ELAC Debut 3 6.2 with the Revel M106 or M105.
I may be an anomaly, but the Elac Debut just did not speak to me... I returned them and continue to listen to and thoroughly enjoy my Amphions...
All the reviews so far on the Debut 3 lead me to
think it's worth a look / listen , but I don't see it in Australia yet
and so , waiting , of course it's
l likely going to be a "bit" more expensive here as well ."
Thanks for tweaking my impatience , he, he, .
I’m at the edge of my seat ready to hear your comparison of the Elac Debut 2.0 b6.2. Is the difference so different from neutral or vocal clarity (of the 2.0s) that I should upgrade? Currently using as fronts for my living room HT on the RZ-50.
Which model sounds better between the ELAC debut 3 or the Elac Uni-Fi 2.0 UB52? thank you
Will there be a review on the Kef Kc92 you have?
Seconded!
Feels like you almost can't go wrong with ELAC. I have the FS 247.4 (Carina Floorstanding, one of the Andrew Jones models) and am very happy.
They are no doubt designed with affordable gear in mind.
Every sunday and friday I'm like a little boy on christmas morning!!! love your videos so much!
I really appreciate that. Thank you for tuning in!
Also you should review the new Pro-Ject Audio Speaker Box 3 E
and 3 E Carbon.
Fun question! Tune in on Friday (Unplugged) for my answer.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Awesome! Will do.
Thank you for this review. I hesitate between these speakers and Wharfedale Denton 85. Any thoughts about how they compare ?
Heard both the bookshelf and towers at the LA audio show and was really impressed. For reference, I’m rarely impressed, regardless of price.
They're very good speakers.
I really like the look of this speaker.
How do these compare with Q Acoustic 3020i?
Looks like AJ taught some other Elac engineers a thing or two about speaker design while he was there. Got me wanting to upgrade my Debut F5.2s
Hi Andrew, great review.. what if to compare to revel concerta m16 ? which better buys ?
The Debut 2.0 is good, though I didn't like the original quite as much (from brief demos I had of both). These always seem to be good budget offerings though.
The front ported design on the 2.0’s has been amazing for getting good sound and having these next to my TV.
Hi, excellent review!
As of today between the Debut 3.0, LSX II , svs prime wireless pro, Kanto tuK
What would be best for a nearfield desktop 2.1 speaker for my PC, they will be paired with an SVS micro sub.
Thanks for watching!
Excellent review. Thanks guys.
Hope you're feeling better Kristi.
Hi...with m5si, oberon 7, or Elac debut F6.3?
So, given the same price, this or the Dianond 12.2s? Any obvious anawer?
I have the Elac Carina bookshelf and also the new cerwin-vega LA165 bookshelf . At $270 the cerwin-vega LA165 holds its own and does somethings better than the Carina's at 1/4 the price and compete well with them...the new LA series vega are crazy good in the price range...the LA44 at $500 best bang for buck in home audio. 3 way slim tower.
They do look good. I do have a pair of DBR62s that I never listen to and I agree they are hard to drive.
Why don't you listen to them? Did you find another speaker you prefer?
@@KristiWright I never liked their sound. But I do like their looks. Hoping to someday find a good amp for them. I’m still searching for something that I really like.
The lack of bass is disappointing. So are the looks and the choice of colours.
Sub is mandatory.
Andrew and Kristi,
Great review.
Does this mean that Mr. Jones protégé at ELAC is going to revamp other speakers in the line?
They kind of remind me of the Speaker Box 5 S2's.
How do they compare?
Noting this for Friday's Unplugged.
@@KristiWright
Cool, thank you.
Also, hope you're feeling better soon.
How do you think these compare with the Heco Aurora bookshelf speakers?
Those are warm sounding speakers. This Elac sounds more neutral and with more emphasis on the top end and less on the bottom.
Would you recommend these or Focal Theva No.1 which you guys had high praise for?
Tune in Friday for this answer.
Great question actually!
Our Unplugged episode is live. Give it a watch for the answer!
Tremendous value with these speakers.
I agree.
What powered subwoofer would you recommend for the Elac’s D3?…..Under $400 USD. Or should I spend more?
RSL SPEEDWOOFER 10 SE
RSL for the win , buy it blindfolded
Q: did you just use 1 sub? or 2? Would an AV Receiver be able to be a good option w/ these speaker for music? (i.e. using an AV receiver for the TV surround with in ceiling and then shifting to the ELACs for 2 channel music times). Thinking about getting a newer Denon AVR or Marantz.
Can anybody let me know how a $2500 budget 5.2.2 setup with these compare with Sony Theatre Quad (HT-A9 M2). Thank you !!!
Hello, toughts on Elac vs Monitor audio bronze ?
Thank you 😊
Yes, please!
Elac
Noting the Bronze for Friday's Unplugged.
@@KristiWright sorry I don't get it, what do you mean ?
Friday mornings we post Unplugged episodes: bit.ly/43NnDkT
Why does the version you can buy in the UK have a different mid bass driver with a convex centre?
Curious how these compare to the Wharfedale Diamond 12.x series.
Yeah, I'm curious too
I got a set of 9.0.4 Debut 2.0s. They are great, especially for music. Since I went with the Klipsch RP line, they are in my basement waiting to be sold. The F6.2 AND the F5.2 have quite a punch.
My B5.2’s definitely need some power to come alive but scale nicely with a subwoofer. I still prefer my RP 8000f ii - especially at low volumes.
@@derekf7772 yeah I run RP8000 add 504C. RP5000 for wides, surrounds, and rear surrounds. 99% Home Theater
@@derekf7772 same with the debut 2.0. not needed but definitely benefits
Elac holding the standard high I see! Great review!
Thanks for watching!
Fine. I’ll give em a try, Andrew. Time to replace my old Athena’s book shelf anyway.
Comparison to Polk R200?
The R200 is referenced several times in this video. Check out the sound section.
