- 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Review - 1.5L and 2.0L Turbo Engines. The Chevy Malibu is all new for 2016 with L, LS, LT, and Premier trims offering a 1.5L turbo engine or a 2.0L turbo engine. The all new platform is about 300 lbs lighter than its predecessor, and has a 4 inch longer wheelbase for a more comfortable ride and more rear passenger legroom. The standard 1.5L turbo produces 160 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque from just 2000 RPM, and weighs in at 3,097 lbs, getting an EPA fuel economy rating of 27 mpg city 37 mpg highway.
The 2.0L turbo option provides 250 horsepower and plenty of torque early on thanks to a twin-scroll turbocharger. The Malibu features Apple Car Play and Android Auto, simplifying the ability to use your phone on the infotainment system. The Malibu also offers a new teen driving mode, enabling all safety features and requiring the seatbelt to be buckled in order for music to play, and provides parents with a "report card" thanks to a system that integrates with the key fob.
Base model starts at $22,500, the 2.0L Premier Trim starts at $31,795.

NEW VIDEO EVERY WEDNESDAY! - Авто та транспорт
55% of teenagers don't wear seat belts in the passenger seat? That's outrageous. Everybody has to wear the seatbelt in the passenger or else I'll pull over in the middle of nowhere and kick them out.
I always wore mine, still do.
I know how I drive lol like a nut!!
It's just drilled into me....
I usually reach for it by instinct even when moving my car 20ft in the driveway ;)
+bmwmsport11 Natural selection wishes to take its course, lol.
+iibrahim264 Beest way to not have injuries in your car is to not wear your seatbelt and die outright. Seatbelts big cause of broken collarbones and bruises.
+bmwmsport11 I had to yell at my friend to get her to wear it and it's a convertible too. Damn kids these days!
good for you! seriously. I thought I was the only one that forced my passengers to wear a seatbelt. I would always tell them that if we got in an accident there head hitting the windshield would make a huge mess.
"it was going to let me die" I laughed way harder than I should have😂
"yeah it's underwhelming" 😂😂 I died
I mean all things considered, it's totally fine. I wouldn't say the acceleration of any base model mid-size is thrilling. And for those who want it, the 2.0 twin-scroll is solid.
Just got the 2018 w the 1.5 and I thought it was underwhelming as well. I do think I can optimize it in manual mode a bit more, but I did buy it for the wife. I’m curious if there will be many aftermarket turbo enhancements other mods come out for the 1.5...hmm
@@Protect1n2did you find any?
@@megajam5286 I never did, car got repo-ed after I got it back from my now ex 🤭. Blessing in disguise
The 1.5 has no take off but speed isn't bad once it get rolling the 2.0 turbo is beast
the pedestrian tracking thing is good but what if you really wanna run someone over? intrusive no?
+Prince Charming - you can do that by engaging the 'killing spree mode' through a secret button combination.
lol I'm not sure if he was talking to me or you
to you Prince, :D, i drove this car, one of the best out there, ride quality and strong 2.0.
OK I was being sarcastic. I'm sure it's a good car. maybe you took my comment too serious. sorry if i was harsh though
I was kidding man, you are so charming. Great car the suspension is better than my bmw 328i.
Your reviews always tell me exactly what I wanna know. This is after struggling to find info for the last 30 min on google. Thank you!!!
I was a teenager who didn't have a seatbelt on. Went straight through the windshield and stent 3 years recovering. Also did buy the "underwhelming 1.5t" Malibu fully loaded. And yes its underwhelming. But an awesome car to drive. And it will do a 100 mph.. eventually
Great video, I really got a good idea of what the car is like and you have a great way of telling about the event and the features of the car. I love all your videos!
Btw, your hair is awesome!
6.7 seconds to 60? Nice.
I own a 16 malibu Premier 2.0 with 69,000 miles on it i have to say it's a great car!! And most deffently a sleeper.
That 2.0L needs to find its way into the Cruise with a 6-speed manual.
It's very encouraging to see that GM is building solid cars these days. The engineering is finally up to par with the competition and the interior quality looks to be quite good.
+Nikiaf but you wont know theres a life threatening problem until youre dead, or a decade later.
Problem is nobody's buying sedans anymore
Correction, interior part are the ONLY thing GM is good at making. The engine assembly may look good, and it may run okay for a while, but the quality control is so weak that I'm surprised their cars are even street legal. These cars are complete death traps
5 years behind Toyota
Fun fact: In 8th gear, at 80 mph, the 2.0L engine will rev at 2080 rpm!
By comparison, in 6th gear at 80 mph, the 1.5L engine will rev at 2450 rpm.
If you're willing to redline it in reverse, you can go up to 50 mph with the 1.5L!
+ExactlyPrecisely meanwhile in 5th at 75mph my 01 540i sportwagon does around 1500rpm from it's 4.4L v8...................
You sir should get an outro. awesome work though glad to see you are getting a ton of subs.
Thank you for this beautiful presentation.Greetings from Romania.
I just picked up a 2016 Buick Regal. Just as you stated in the Malibu, I'm very happy with how the controls are laid out. The physical buttons for important things is well appreciated. Also the manual shift mode for the Trans is fun but get rid of the shift denied! If I want to shift into the next gear under 2000 rpm let me do it, make the denial limited strictly to conditions that would damage things.
I appreciate your mention of the passion of the designers....thx!
Wtf
Hey Jason, I had a request, if you would be able to make a video for me and other viewers about how synchronizers work... I don't know much about them unfortunately, but I heard that in order to do something called "double clutch," you need synchros. If you would make a video about what double clutching is and what it does and what synchros are and what they do, I would highly appreciate it! Keep up the incredible work with your videos, they have helped me out a lot
So the 1.5 liter turbo is "underwhelming". That tears it for me.
+paktype Aren't motorcycles engines about that size? That car has to weigh about 3500 pounds. That turbo must be working it's ass off, especially when you have 4 people in the car and a trunk full of luggage. What's next, a 1.0 L with a turbo with 50 pounds of boost?
CBJO_752 I do hate that they got rid of the v6 For the Malibu but hey you can still get the v6 For the impala and it also makes 305hp
T-mobile actually has the best coverage in my area. Even better than Verizon.
^^works for T-mobile. Haha, the other day I was a block away from a T-mobile store, literally looking at it, and I was "searching for service."
+Engineering Explained Different phones will have different coverage, and a smart consumer would do their research before buying, no? Perhaps make use of their coverage guarantees?
+Engineering Explained Why not just stop complaining and switch to a different carrier. Simple as that.
+BalzyMcGEE Have you seen his videos?
+Engineering Explained I am surprised you say T-Mobile is bad in CA. I drive from SF to LA on I-5 and back to SF on Route 101 at the end of December and my T-Mobile iPhone 6s+ have the same dead spot as my friend's Verizon iPad Air 2 LTE.
This was pretty funny. I enjoyed it, reminded me of the minivan review.
I wish I was there to geek out with you and Jesse Ortega, I've been a long time BMW fan and feel they have lost that passion you talk about and love that GM has those kinds of guys now
It would certainly be a better Rental Car than the bucket I'm stuck with
Really like the dash and exterior looks. Hope buyers get a car that lives up to first impressions.
I don't comment often, but when I do I comment on Engineering Explained.
Great job man, you've honestly not made one bad video. I havent seen them all yet tho 😜
Thank you Matt!
Does the CarPlay work over Bluetooth? I notice you have the phone plugged in but that's just for power I assume? I ask because of the likelihood that the port on iPhones will be changing again...
It's a usb connection, even if the plug changes you have a different usb cable. I'm not sure about bluetooth, I don't think so. But you could do the usual bluetooth connection and play via your phone.
+youmongrel CarPlay can only be used if plugged in.
+Engineering Explained are you in europe now ?
+youmongrel Only USB wire carplay available, no any car hardware yet support wireless carplay , you still can connect your phone to chevy mylink via bluetooth for calls and music
that's pretty good review. i really like it :) good for you bro.
Thanks for all yours great video .... What is the best cars or suv for a tall guy of 6.4 ? best legroom ?
Towncar
I have the 2016 with a 1.5. It is definitely slow, coming from a 2011 Chrysler 300 v6 and a 95 thunderbird V8. That said, it’s the most comfortable and best handling carbIve had. And the infotainment works great.
I was not even aware the Malibu was still in production till I saw a coworker with one. His has the 1.5 liter but it has really good room especially the trunk and the back seats that fold down. It's considered a mid size car but looks like a full size one. The Premier is definitely what I have my eyes on with that 2.0 liter putting out 250 hp it will do very nice for a road trip anywhere and still get great mpg.
It’s not in production anymore
From a country that has the least to do with Chevy and man we missed this masterpiece
After tweaking the 1.5l once you get past 50 mph it now comes alive until around 120 mph which not many people will be going that fast so it works great ❤
its a very attractive car
Do you have a review on the 2017 model?
the safety features are good for kids. I appreciate chevy trying to make an attempt at a parental control function or data in a car. Other car makers should apply this to their cars too.
will this be the base for the new Opel Insignia?
excellent review
"If you're a teenager and you don't wear your seat belt in a car, you're pretty dumb, that's all I have to say" - Jason Fenske
Oh my god! I couldn't have said it better myself!
Now what we need is a twin scroll turbo charger on the STI/WRX.
having trouble with my ipod 160 classic synching with my mylink! It will play a couple songs then freeze up or just disappear altogether on the screen. Is there a software update to correct this problem? ...thank you for help!
from my experience people greater than 6ft tall don't usually lie about height. I am 6'1" too and I laugh out loud at people who claim to be "6ft tall" that are clearly many inches shorter than me. Then they usually claim it is who is mistaken and I must be at least 6'4" or something absurd like that.
I love the T-Mobil rant lol. Regarding the car wifi - is that a monthly fee through On-Star or something?
Can you measure interior noise in your future reviews. Highway noise is one of my most important when buying cars.
Damn, I'm here early, 11 views and 360p.
Uff, the upload failed the first time. Some folks got to witness audio mishaps in full 4K glory.
+Engineering Explained hmm issues still at 360p
+Sartaj Aujla Wow this is a real techno mystery here. I hope someone can bust out a hammer and fiddle with the internet tubes a bit because 360p an hour after uploading a video is just an impossible tragedy that kids these days shouldn't be subjected to.
+rorschach775 yeah usually youtube does it within 15-30mins just out of the usual
Sartaj Aujla Someone should call the police. Maybe some of the data has been kidnapped.
Best Auto Reviewer on UA-cam!!!
How would you compare this car to the 2015 Hyundai sonata 2.0t???
Is it worth the price for the highest trim level?
My internet is so fast that I get here too soon.
More rants please!!
.Thanks alot to every one who give same are these details
Did they drop the diesel engine option?
Could you review the Hyundai Genesis Coupe please?
I was wondering about fuel shutoff, an engine crankshaft is on hydrodynamic bearings. Meaning it has to spin to get subricated. The startup and shutoff of the engine is where you get the wear of these bearings. Using the shutoff technology at every redlights multiply by a huge factor the "normal" amount of start-stop cycles of an engine causing a faster wear of the components. Am I wrong or are the manufacturers using a different technology to avoid the phenomenon?
Lubricated instead of subricated
I believe it..I never once wore my seatbelt when I was a teenage even when I was driving lol now I always wear it. Idn why I never did..must have been the ganja!!
Perfect description of the car, I have a the premier one, it is very nice looking car and fully loaded for safety and entertainment, it is very powerful and have a nice ride, doing 85 mph and engine speed only around 2100-2200 rpm, passing on the highway is easy, minimum noise in the cab, excellent job chevy.
Do you have to put premium gas in it?
You think they would have gotten rid of that annoying button on the gear shifter and gave it manual shifting gate, a lot more fun to drive..
something I do find funny is I had a Plymouth breeze, I had to sell it and miss it once in a while. it was a 1997, 5 speed manual, 2.0L, 4 doors, and when I sold the vehicle it had about 205K miles (I believe it still works for the new owners). In PA I could get 36 to 40 MPG but if I wanted to I could spin the wheels free in first and chirp in second. so not a speed demon, but my dad and I would get giggles with how it is 19 years old now and got actual mileage equal to or higher than most hybrid's EPA estimates (which seem to be typically 25% higher than what it actually ends up being). I am hoping hybrids get smart as they get better but I thought I would mention that some vehicles were made well enough that when cared for could have some fun, get good mileage, and since they are a decade or so old they are usually cheap to get ahold of
You're going to be the topic of one of John Legeres tweets for bad mouthing Tmobile lol. Great review and more ranting!
remember the time when we say 301+ views?
360p it the new thing!
You didn't comment on the performance (0 to 60mph) with the 2litre turbo???
11:35 you didn’t watch the hole video
Does it have an external water pump?
Does the premier take premium gas?
almost as fast as my v6 makes 0_60. in 6.1 seconds amaizing
Can you do a reviews of the 320i 328i 340i and M3??? like a 3 series series.
+Gab Campbell Hoping to get BMW on board for 2016. They've been reluctant to send cars for this year.
@Engineering Explained please i would like to know the possibility of fitting a high performance car like the mercedes G class with an economical engine like that of a toyota or nissan ((can u change a cars engine with another??))..thank you
Why would you want to swap in an American 2.0 into a Merc?
+FerpiliciousProducts cow u know fuel n 4dat matter premium is abit pricy elswer......also jx wnted to knw the possibility
I honestly think if the numbers are this bad, there should almost be a transmission I mobilizer that won't allow the driver to shift out of park unless they have their seat belt buckled and all the passengers the car sense do as well. Yes there are emergency situations where having this feature may not be good, but I think in 95% of cases this would be an effective strategy to make sure people are buckling up
for a v4 2.0t 0-60 6.7 seconds amaizing ford v4 makes it in 9 seconds and toyota v4 around the same so as for honda it is a ten second car chevy nice nice nice and really fast for a v4 wow
+mjhhyf igboclfastlpggsyldgo Valdez Inline four (not a V), but yes. And it's turbocharged.
+mjhhyf igboclfastlpggsyldgo Valdez its a inline 4
+mjhhyf igboclfastlpggsyldgo Valdez toyota's does 0-60 in 10.5 s :)
+mjhhyf igboclfastlpggsyldgo Valdez the Honda Accord i4 does 0-60 in 7.5 seconds, the v6 does it in 5.6 seconds
"V4" lmaooooo
Damn, you had a Model S beside you and a 2016 Lexus RX in front. Lucky.
It's Palo Alto haha, those were the poor folks of my drive.
I don't know much about turbo setups, but can you explain the term "open wastegate" on a turbocharged engine? If you pull the hose off the wastegate wouldn't it be considered a "closed wastegate"? Or does "open wastegate" have a different meaning?
So an open wastegate is essentially a closed wastegate. It allows the exhaust gas to pass through the exhaust wheel allowing your turbo to spin longer (creates excess heat not a good idea). The reason it's called open is cause the wastegate hose is open, not the wastegate. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but that's essentially the setup. You can also run an external wastegate and not have it recirc, which would essentially be an open wastegate in the literal sense. They're super loud, had the setup on my DSM.
Also, if you run an open wastegate, beside it creating too much heat, can you blow your engine from too much boost since the wastegate is not letting out excess gas? Or does it act somewhat like anti-lag to keep the turbo spinning and make you stay at a set boost pressure?
+TC Guy it can go either way. Odds are your turbo would go before your motor. You can easily push out more psi, although you aren't tuned for it and asking for trouble.
All new Mailbu was unvailed in Korea today. 1.5T and 2.0T were introduced . I think it is fantastic price.
Ha! I enjoyed how much of this video was a rant about safe driving and how bad T-Mobile's coverage is.
i had a question how fast does it take to go to 60mph in the 2.0 l turbo
6.7 seconds
at sea level its 6.2
Did you see anyone from redline channel?
05:52 I for sure thought that guy was going to pull out in front of you
Why GM or any other American automakers have a Sunroof standard on higher trims?
37 USMPG highway from a 1.5?
What a sad attempt GM, what a sad attempt.
my old civic hatchback which was a 1.8 did 37USMPG on the highway.
The Malibu needs a ECU update to make it alittle more aggressive on fuel economy.
Actually, it is a 1.5L Turbocharged I4 that makes 184LB-FT of torque (pretty much double the power of a piece of junk Civic). Not to mention that the 2016 Malibu is one of the longest cars in the mid-size sedan segment and is nearly twice the length of a Civic Hatch...
+Evan Ganske\
since when is 194" pretty much twice as much as 167"?
or
184lb/ft pretty much twice as much as 129lb/ft?
My hatch had plenty of leg room in the back, not to mention it could carry large heavy objects with ease
+anewacc the civic I had also come with a 1.3(marketed as a 1.4) engine and it is under-powered for the car, but it will last longer than this engine.
Honda Engines are bullet proof.
+IIGrayfoxII man this is a mid size vehicle, not a compact. not to mention it would stomp the civic in acceleration.
+larry Spiller matches the 200, sonota, beats the accord, and camry in mileage. (All base engines)
do i sense a seatbelt psa?
What they should do is make it so that the horn just honks continuously down the road if you don't have you seat belt in. It's as if you have your hand stuck to the horn. That's pretty annoying if you driving the car
True, but it's also really distracting to other drivers
+keino111689 how about an annoying "chime" that plays non stop until all seat belts are fastened. think of the warning beep when you leave the keys in, but 2x louder, and 4x more annoying
yeah that might work just as well. but that would would just make you so conspicuous.
Perhaps it should be a personal choice. The assholes legislating seat belts also legislated tiny cars. Why is there no full sized car? Forcing people into tiny cars and huge trucks is a recipe for disaster. And the fuel saving devices Inc tiny engine and turbo and start stop will cost more in repairs than it saves.
Pretty impressive from Chevrolet. Would still get a mazda6 though, no doubt about it.
Speaking of tiny engines, Ford is selling the Mondeo with the 1.0 liter EcoBoost at least here in Europe.
Anybody k how many punds of boost tge turbo puts out
5 years later, the only things that keep these things selling, are fleet sales, and rental companies.
That’s Chevys fault for that, but Malibu had the best sales in 2022 among consumers so it’s not all tru
Eh a lot of European mid-size sedans have 1.6/1.5 engines, bit I do think generally they are a bit smaller than the US mid-size sedans (VW make a European Passat and a USDM focused Passat).
3:40 really? you could just connect the seatbelts before you sit down, so that you sort of sit on top of them.
And is there any guarantee the teens won't find out the immobilisers in GM cars are easy to hack? They were just using resistance sensors in the lock (a pot meter could be used to hack it), and I don't think they've changed it.
(The immobiliser is the things that differentiate the keys, it just has to be like that since the shape of the key is the same)
+sasja de vries ...or they could buckle the seatbelt.
Nice!
lol the Ford Fusion an American sedan has had a 1.5L for a while
like your shows
1.5 a great engine for keeping your teen out of trouble
How is 27 MPG city a good rating, especially for a 1.5 made in 2015?
+Dick Pickles Because it's a pretty big car?
Tuppoo94
Stil. 27 MPG is almost pickup truck territory, seems strange
Dick Pickles Pickup trucks get that on the highway, not in the city.
+Dick Pickles Umm. I think you need to look at those numbers again. An average truck or mid-to-large SUV is going to be extremely lucky to get 27MPG in pure highway cruising. The new Malibu gets that in stop-and-go city traffic, and up to 37MPG on the highway.
+Dick Pickles Horsepower is horsepower. It doesn't matter if the power is coming from a 3.5 liter or a 1.5. The cars use turbochargers to make up for their lack of displacement. Thus when they're off turbo boost, they should consume that of a 1.5, when they're on turbo boost, more like a 3.5. You can't get power from nothing, gasoline has 32.4 megajoules of energy in 1 liter, it takes X amount of fuel + oxygen to make y amount of horsepower.
TBH, you lost me at "I'm also kinda surprised that Chevy's putting a 1.5 liter in a mid-sized sedan. That's pretty cool, an American car company putting this tiny engine in, ah, a pretty big sedan." :P
You look like professor randy who wrote "the last lecture."
55%? That seems WAY too high. Ridiculously high. Im 19, I don't know a single person who doesn't wear their seat belt. Once or twice I'll forget to put my seat belt on if I'm sitting middle with a lap belt, but I cant imagine people driving without them.
Edit: that 2,163 teen driving deaths in 2013 statistic hits a lot harder when you knew one of them.
statistics are very far from accurate due to the fact how the numbers change by the second so ignore statics my fellow teen. I'm 18 and I'm getting tired of how society is constantly degrading and blaming things on us
+Chris Peoples How is that statistic blaming you for anything?
is it pretty noisy in there then?
+Patrick Sarandi He said it was quiet.
At bout 10:50 says its quite:)
5:53 You should have qualified that as Tmobile is awful in YOUR particular area.
"I use t-mobile, t-mobile is terrible" preach
Between teens not wearing seat belts and T-Mobile having terrible service, this was a very thorough review of the new Malibu!
Chevy must be thoroughly impressed!
Really bums me out my '96 chevy pickup doesnt have "bluetooth" or a computer screen in the dash. No GPS. Amazing I can get from point A to point B. Same with my 2005 Impala SS. No bluetooth or computer screen.....what will I do?
Yeah it's a nice feature to have but not necessary. Still it's a nice car. What do you think about Impalas? I'm in the market for a car and was looking into an Impala actually
It is necessary if you are a convenient hipster instead of a hillbilly. =)
I like that! Funny guy. What could possibly give you the impression that I'm a hillbilly? Couldn't be my picture could it?
All those holes drilled in the underbody and suspension parts will allow salt to get trapped inside so everything can rot out if you live in an area with snow.
EXACTLY
You would think that the car would be designed to not be able to put in drive without the seat belt being connected 'teen mode' or not, but I'm no expert.
I'll start by saying that I am far from a fan of GM products. Only thing I've ever really enjoyed of theirs was Test Track at Disney World and that got stuck last time I was on it, haha! That being said, I have to admit this appears to be a very nice looking design. I guess time will tell how the smaller engines hold up in a midsize.
I would be happy with a 1.5 with a turbo that has 160 HP... xD
