  • 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Review - 1.5L and 2.0L Turbo Engines. The Chevy Malibu is all new for 2016 with L, LS, LT, and Premier trims offering a 1.5L turbo engine or a 2.0L turbo engine. The all new platform is about 300 lbs lighter than its predecessor, and has a 4 inch longer wheelbase for a more comfortable ride and more rear passenger legroom. The standard 1.5L turbo produces 160 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque from just 2000 RPM, and weighs in at 3,097 lbs, getting an EPA fuel economy rating of 27 mpg city 37 mpg highway.
    The 2.0L turbo option provides 250 horsepower and plenty of torque early on thanks to a twin-scroll turbocharger. The Malibu features Apple Car Play and Android Auto, simplifying the ability to use your phone on the infotainment system. The Malibu also offers a new teen driving mode, enabling all safety features and requiring the seatbelt to be buckled in order for music to play, and provides parents with a "report card" thanks to a system that integrates with the key fob.
    Base model starts at $22,500, the 2.0L Premier Trim starts at $31,795.

    55% of teenagers don't wear seat belts in the passenger seat? That's outrageous. Everybody has to wear the seatbelt in the passenger or else I'll pull over in the middle of nowhere and kick them out.

      I mean all things considered, it's totally fine. I wouldn't say the acceleration of any base model mid-size is thrilling. And for those who want it, the 2.0 twin-scroll is solid.

      Just got the 2018 w the 1.5 and I thought it was underwhelming as well. I do think I can optimize it in manual mode a bit more, but I did buy it for the wife. I’m curious if there will be many aftermarket turbo enhancements other mods come out for the 1.5...hmm

    Fun fact: In 8th gear, at 80 mph, the 2.0L engine will rev at 2080 rpm!
    By comparison, in 6th gear at 80 mph, the 1.5L engine will rev at 2450 rpm.
    If you're willing to redline it in reverse, you can go up to 50 mph with the 1.5L!

    I just picked up a 2016 Buick Regal. Just as you stated in the Malibu, I'm very happy with how the controls are laid out. The physical buttons for important things is well appreciated. Also the manual shift mode for the Trans is fun but get rid of the shift denied! If I want to shift into the next gear under 2000 rpm let me do it, make the denial limited strictly to conditions that would damage things.

I don't know much about them unfortunately, but I heard that in order to do something called "double clutch," you need synchros. If you would make a video about what double clutching is and what it does and what synchros are and what they do, I would highly appreciate it! Keep up the incredible work with your videos, they have helped me out a lot

    I have the 2016 with a 1.5. It is definitely slow, coming from a 2011 Chrysler 300 v6 and a 95 thunderbird V8. That said, it’s the most comfortable and best handling carbIve had. And the infotainment works great.

    I was not even aware the Malibu was still in production till I saw a coworker with one. His has the 1.5 liter but it has really good room especially the trunk and the back seats that fold down. It's considered a mid size car but looks like a full size one. The Premier is definitely what I have my eyes on with that 2.0 liter putting out 250 hp it will do very nice for a road trip anywhere and still get great mpg.

    from my experience people greater than 6ft tall don't usually lie about height. I am 6'1" too and I laugh out loud at people who claim to be "6ft tall" that are clearly many inches shorter than me. Then they usually claim it is who is mistaken and I must be at least 6'4" or something absurd like that.

    I was wondering about fuel shutoff, an engine crankshaft is on hydrodynamic bearings. Meaning it has to spin to get subricated. The startup and shutoff of the engine is where you get the wear of these bearings. Using the shutoff technology at every redlights multiply by a huge factor the "normal" amount of start-stop cycles of an engine causing a faster wear of the components. Am I wrong or are the manufacturers using a different technology to avoid the phenomenon?

    something I do find funny is I had a Plymouth breeze, I had to sell it and miss it once in a while. it was a 1997, 5 speed manual, 2.0L, 4 doors, and when I sold the vehicle it had about 205K miles (I believe it still works for the new owners). In PA I could get 36 to 40 MPG but if I wanted to I could spin the wheels free in first and chirp in second. so not a speed demon, but my dad and I would get giggles with how it is 19 years old now and got actual mileage equal to or higher than most hybrid's EPA estimates (which seem to be typically 25% higher than what it actually ends up being). I am hoping hybrids get smart as they get better but I thought I would mention that some vehicles were made well enough that when cared for could have some fun, get good mileage, and since they are a decade or so old they are usually cheap to get ahold of

    I honestly think if the numbers are this bad, there should almost be a transmission I mobilizer that won't allow the driver to shift out of park unless they have their seat belt buckled and all the passengers the car sense do as well. Yes there are emergency situations where having this feature may not be good, but I think in 95% of cases this would be an effective strategy to make sure people are buckling up

    I don't know much about turbo setups, but can you explain the term "open wastegate" on a turbocharged engine? If you pull the hose off the wastegate wouldn't it be considered a "closed wastegate"? Or does "open wastegate" have a different meaning?

    • @FerpiliciousProducts
      @FerpiliciousProducts 8 років тому +1

      So an open wastegate is essentially a closed wastegate. It allows the exhaust gas to pass through the exhaust wheel allowing your turbo to spin longer (creates excess heat not a good idea). The reason it's called open is cause the wastegate hose is open, not the wastegate. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but that's essentially the setup. You can also run an external wastegate and not have it recirc, which would essentially be an open wastegate in the literal sense. They're super loud, had the setup on my DSM.

    • @TCGuy02
      @TCGuy02 8 років тому

      Also, if you run an open wastegate, beside it creating too much heat, can you blow your engine from too much boost since the wastegate is not letting out excess gas? Or does it act somewhat like anti-lag to keep the turbo spinning and make you stay at a set boost pressure?

    • @FerpiliciousProducts
      @FerpiliciousProducts 8 років тому

      +TC Guy it can go either way. Odds are your turbo would go before your motor. You can easily push out more psi, although you aren't tuned for it and asking for trouble.

    The Malibu needs a ECU update to make it alittle more aggressive on fuel economy.

      Actually, it is a 1.5L Turbocharged I4 that makes 184LB-FT of torque (pretty much double the power of a piece of junk Civic). Not to mention that the 2016 Malibu is one of the longest cars in the mid-size sedan segment and is nearly twice the length of a Civic Hatch...

Forcing people into tiny cars and huge trucks is a recipe for disaster. And the fuel saving devices Inc tiny engine and turbo and start stop will cost more in repairs than it saves.

    3:40 really? you could just connect the seatbelts before you sit down, so that you sort of sit on top of them.
    And is there any guarantee the teens won't find out the immobilisers in GM cars are easy to hack? They were just using resistance sensors in the lock (a pot meter could be used to hack it), and I don't think they've changed it.
    (The immobiliser is the things that differentiate the keys, it just has to be like that since the shape of the key is the same)

    • @OSTKCabal
      @OSTKCabal 8 років тому +2

      +Dick Pickles Umm. I think you need to look at those numbers again. An average truck or mid-to-large SUV is going to be extremely lucky to get 27MPG in pure highway cruising. The new Malibu gets that in stop-and-go city traffic, and up to 37MPG on the highway.

    • @43854586
      @43854586 8 років тому

      +Dick Pickles Horsepower is horsepower. It doesn't matter if the power is coming from a 3.5 liter or a 1.5. The cars use turbochargers to make up for their lack of displacement. Thus when they're off turbo boost, they should consume that of a 1.5, when they're on turbo boost, more like a 3.5. You can't get power from nothing, gasoline has 32.4 megajoules of energy in 1 liter, it takes X amount of fuel + oxygen to make y amount of horsepower.
