  • This is a large format modular analog synthesizer that I constructed. It took me about 10 months to build and I'm just now getting around to talking about it. It's got some interesting design quirks that are noteworthy. I have no previous experience with synthesizers so I decided to simply jump in the deep end and make something awesome. Almost everything in this thing is either analog or digital in the form of sequential logic chips. The only module that contains a microcontroller is the MIDI to CV module. That's only because I couldn't get it to work properly with sequential logic circuitry. The MIDI implementation of my MIDI controller was weird and wouldn't send proper triggers. 80% of the circuits were designed by Ray Wilson from his MFOS website. The rest were either designed by me, modified by me or made by somebody else. The modules are built to run on +/- 15V rails.

Where did you get your patch cables from? And are you running the sequencer of an LFO or a dedicated clock? Great video too, love the case!

The plastic colored ones I got from Ebay and the cloth covered ones I got from Guitar Center online. The sequencer has an internal clock but it can be clocked by an external source like the LFO.

Can you show us all how you built the individual elements 🙏

I probably will at some point, I made a video on the VCO and Sequencer but haven't got around to the rest of them.

@@thetuberoaster8321 Great stuff……………….you have made something fantastic and would be good to share and show how you went about it 👍

Glad I found your Channel. How much money would estimate the cost?

Since I had no idea what I was doing, it cost me about $1500. If I were to do it again I could probably get the cost below $1000. Certain parts of the process became absolute money pits. For instance, I tried to design a PCB for one of the modules and it was an epic fail. Actually, most of the cost was the sheer number of parts. If I were smart and bought everything in bulk it likely would have been substantially cheaper.

@@thetuberoaster8321 JLC PCB are pre good in terms of price for custom PCBs.

I actually ended up using JLC PCB since their prices were very good. The problem is, their $2 a board price goes up pretty fast when you need something larger than 100mm x 100mm. If I remember correctly, the board I needed it cost ~$20 and shipping cost about that much too. (Comparatively, Oshpark wanted like ~$120). That wasn't the problem so much as the cost of parts. I was lazy and didn't use IC sockets so almost none of the parts were recoverable to use later. If the board actually would've worked it would've been great.

@@thetuberoaster8321 that's a shame! Yeah IC sockets are my savour, especially when you have like a 32 pin EPROM. Screw de soldering that! Also you probably have heard of lookmumnocomputer but he does some great diy synth stuff.

@@Rottenhail93 Ya I've heard of him. In order to inform my design process I actually examined what he did for his rig. I love how he keeps it mostly analog instead of cheating with software. The Furby organ was crazy.
