The *only* step you've missed is a bottle of Bishop's Finger, or Old Crafty Hen, Tim. I'll wager that speaker would still make a reasonable sound without its foam surround. Probably not a great sound, but...enough for diagnostics at least. I've had to replace those before, but that was on a 12" subwoofer, so there was a little bit more room to work in! Thanks for this Sunday Morning video, sir.
@matambale Yes I think after looking more carefully it was all paper, corrugated at the edge. The radio has been in all sorts of environments including in Africa for a while. The corrugated bit seems to have just rotted away.
Hi Tim. It looks like yours has suffered thr same fate at the 2 I had here. I think the broken plastic thread will be your biggest hurdle. I glued the one I did multiple times using different glues and every time I tightened it down it just snapped off again. You may be able to recover the speaker but don't try putting the old rubber back on as the alkaline from the battery leakage has got to it. I'm sure the batteries must give off a vapour when they start leaking as it gets into the plastic and makes it brittle. Pop the keyboard membrane off and give it a good going over with your microscope. I lost count of how many tracks I had to fix on my donor set. Let me know if you can't sort the speaker as I may have one that will fit. Good luck and Happy New Year 🎉
@Radiocruncher many thanks Graham, I thought maybe I could find a thinner screw or grind it off a bit so it would still grip but not be so tight. I've stuck it with epoxy so far. Happy New Year to you and Mrs Cruncher.
That speaker damage was bad luck but I don't see how it could have been avoided. Beyond my expertise but maybe if you can find a replacement cone kit of the right diameter it'll be possible to just use the outer part of it? As I imagine this will be the last update this year may I wish you a Happy and Healthy New Year. 🥳 P.S. I love your current subscriber count of 666. 😈
@BobAndersson Thanks Bob. I found a speaker in my spares box which looked perfect until I found it was exactly 1mm too deep so the radio back wouldn't fit on. Must be the 666! Lol!

@@matambale the Finger is an essential part of the tool kit 😉

@Timothycan I stuck mine with JB Weld and that didn't hold it. The plastic was just crumbling. Good luck with it
