  • STUART, FLORIDA - On February 22, 2022, at approximately 12:52 p.m., the Stuart Police Department received a 911 call from a witness stating that she just saw a vehicle hit a bunch of people in the parking lot of Fresh Market at 2300 SE Ocean Blvd, and flee the scene westbound on SE Monterey Rd.
The witness followed the suspect vehicle as it traveled at a high rate of speed westbound on SE Monterey Rd, and provided Stuart Police dispatch with a description of the vehicle. When the vehicle, a black Kia Forte, made a right turn onto SE Palm Beach Rd from SE Monterey Rd, it was intercepted by Stuart Sergeant John Reddick.
Sgt. Reddick activated his emergency lights and siren and attempted to stop the vehicle as it approached the intersection of SE 10th St and SE Palm Beach Rd. The vehicle came to an abrupt stop in the middle of SE 10th St. As Sgt. Reddick exited his vehicle, the suspect vehicle continued northbound on SE Palm Beach Rd, then made a left turn onto westbound SE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd before making a left into the parking lot of the Stuart Police Department.
The suspect vehicle pulled into a parking space and the driver exited the vehicle. Sgt. Reddick pulled in behind the suspect vehicle and took the driver into custody. The driver was later identified as a Beatrice Bijoux.
As soon as Bijoux was taken into custody, she made a spontaneous statement: "The voices in my head told me to kill someone." Bijoux was temporarily secured inside of Sgt. Reddick's patrol vehicle before being transported to a Stuart Police Department interview room.
Four victims were hit by the vehicle being driven by Bijoux. One, a 69 year old female was transported with life threatening injuries to Lawnwood Trauma Center by Martin County Air Rescue. Two others left on their own and refused further treatment, while the last was transported to Cleveland Clinic North by family members with a possible leg injury.
During her subsequent custodial interview, Bijoux was adamant that she intentionally wanted to kill other people, that she intentionally wanted to kill the people she struck with the car, and that she wanted to kill herself.
Bijoux went onto state that she was prescribed medication for bipolar disorder and for schizophrenia, and that she was under a doctor's care. She stated she had not talked to her doctor since December 2021, and that she had been diagnosed with her mental health disorders in 2019.
Bijoux asked for her phone to delete all her social media. (That request was denied.)
Bijoux insisted on being charged with attempted murder in lieu of aggravated battery because her act was intentional.

She was diagnosed waaaaay before 30. She didn't just wake up and heard voices. She should have been monitored with her past mental breakdowns. I understand everyone has rights. Someone who is proven to be unstable should be monitored. It's called preventive care. This whole thing is just sad. With medication and supervision she could have had a better chance. Individuals who have psychosis episodes and hear voices should not be making legal decisions or dispensing medications for others. I have a son with Autism and no matter how well he is doing he will always be supported and supervised. There is just no way around it.

If this event doesn’t show that we have a big hole in our mental health system, then nothing will. I’m a psych nurse and have seen this over and over. Patients being discharged due to not enough psych beds available to being discharged home with family who don’t know how to handle them. Most patients will not want to take their meds. Most patients are not stabilized before being discharged. With severe cases of mental illness, these people need professional, 24 hour care. I’m devastated for Beatrice and her family, as well as all the victims and their families. Such a tragedy. Mental health needs much more funding and facilities to keep the patient and public safe. Too many times they are sent to boarding homes, nursing homes and assisted livings.

This breaks my heart. My friend and I went to school together from the age of 9, but he disappeared when we were 21. A few years later my mum was reading the local newspaper and saw a warning that my friend had escaped a psychiatric facility. That is when I found out that he had recently been diagnosed with bipolar and schizophrenia. He's keeps it under control now, but it has completely destroyed his life.
I can honestly say he is the most kindest and beautiful person, and so is Beatrice from what Tassa and Patrick were saying. Sending lot's of love and good vibes their way.

She is handling the situation in a very polite, understanding, caring way; and not in a demanding way. What an example of how to be a human under such a stressful circumstance. Both she and the brother being there speaks volumes as to their character, IMO. What I don’t get now, even more, is the boyfriend. They certainly don’t know him very well, IMO. If you are helping to supervise someone with mental illness, monitoring their medications is vital. As someone who struggled for years to stay on my medication, you should never assume that the patient is capable of taking their medication as prescribed. Events like this don't happen because you miss your morning pill. It's likely that she stopped taking her medication because she was involved in a new relationship. Her previous boyfriend left when he discovered that she suffered from mental illness. She did mention something about not wanting to take her medication in front of her new partner. I'm also surprised that the family took no interest in getting to know the person that their struggling sister was dating. If they had, they would have discovered that he also suffers from mental illness and might not be the best influence on their sister.

    • @DianaBamaRN

It seemed like he lived some ways a way. Certainly not locally. And they hadn’t been dating that long, only a few months and then she was leaving town and driving to his place for the weekend. So I suspect they didn’t have much of an opportunity to get to know him. Maybe he had lived closer but apparently their relationship was mostly on the phone except for several weekend trips when family wasn’t invited. I hear what you are saying, I just don’t know like how far along in this short relationship did she even tell her family about him. Then when was the opportunity to get to know him. Maybe if the relationship had been longer a time would have presented itself.

It can happen to anyone. I had a psychotic episode at 19 and I seen flames outside my window, heard my dad's voice loud in the sky, thought the sun was a camera, seen my life events on tv, thought the tv shows were all making fun of me. Yet I could talk to my family/people but the delusions got in the way. I was still myself but something seemed off because although I didn't have voices speaking to me, I kept fighting the thoughts in my head. Like being convinced my family were imposters and that everyone was out to get me. Understandably, the delusions and behavior will seem abnormal to others but for the sufferer, it's reality. We need to recognize it exists and stop treating people with mental illness like they are just evil. This will only make people afraid to seek help. Sometimes you can't reveal the thoughts until you take medicine for a while...you start to separate them from normal thinking. Then you realize just how broken your brain was. She should of been in a mental hospital where they make sure you take your meds until you are more stable on your own. I hope she and those that were injured, recover.

These cops don’t have a clue. Yes, I understand she made statements about wanting to hurt/kill ppl, but she also stated she’s hearing voices which needs stat medical attention.

From the 1st interview I saw of Beatrice, she did say a lot of horrific things happened to her when she was young but she didn't elaborate. Which makes me believe something did happened to her but the siblings will never say it publically because it would embarrass the family.
Furthermore that boyfriend of hers is weird as hell.

Man, even her sister is very likable. It appears they were brought up very well! As i mentioned in other video, Beatrice seemed very likable, polite, and agreeable .

Blessings to this family. It’s very difficult for family members of someone having a mental lapse.
