$1 to 2.5 billion for a patriot battery isn't it? This isn't the whole battery though, yet it's a big loss. Plus, forget the cost, think of the Russian planes that luancher isn't going to take out now. Not good.

@@760HorsePower First of all, it's likely only launchers, which are like around 10mil for the German self-propelled ones, from what I've heard.
The command unit is the expensive one, and thats like 400mil, again from what I've see quoted. But, even then, those prices are often very inflated.
Also, in the IR images, I can't see the silhouette of launchers (they stick up quite a bit on the 8x8 German MAN trucks) or the generator boxes behind the cab.
Another thing is, that the MAN HX (used for IRIS-T SLM) is very similar to KAT1 (Patriot), and Germany has also sent a bunch of 8x8 MAN HX vehicles for transporting stuff, so perhaps and hopefully the 8x8s were just transport trucks.
If it is Patriot, hopefully just empty launchers, because they can be replaced relatively easily and not going break the bank replacing them. Also, if the command unit wasn't there, hopefully those soldiers weren't there, too.

So I hope Ukrainian took this choice because they have other things in mind and could lose one of these but I honestly highly doubt it.

The door of the Patriot systems I've seen has a flattened end well away from the termination of the bottom line and to make an irregular pentagon. I don't think it is the same as the Patriot. The explosion would have to make a perfectly straight line for that bottom angle. The MIM 104 has a storage area separate from the cab which is missing. The MAN KAT-1 has a flat bottom to the door.

I also agree, too inconclusive to call it.
How to distinguish doors from MAN, Kamaz, or Iveco, which all have the same shape (especially when after being detonated)? All three brands are used for launchers and/or SAM supply trucks.
E.g. have a look at the picture (5, damaged and captured) under Tornado-U at oryx' russian losses.
I'm not claiming it's this type of truck, but the door (shape of the cabin where the door would be) fits. So the door alone is inconclusive.
Such Kamaz cabins are e.g. regularly used for transloaders. And for FrankenSAMs, a transloader on a MAN or Iveco would be the easiest part. The rather short length of the wreck would generally fit a supply truck.
Every truck with such a door and the approximate length, loaded with any kind of ammo which makes a big boom when being hit would fit the overall picture.
I'm now leaning towards no confirmed Patriot loss, unless Ukraine confirms it, or russia shows a video of a patriot being blown up. It's very convenient to have a drone close enough after the explosion, but not before.
Which doesn't mean it couldn't be a Patriot launcher has been lost, the many russian aircraft losses make it quite likely that some Patriot launchers are forward deployed and would then be high-value targets.
From a door alone I could claim that our local scrapyard has a destroyed Patriot launcher 😉

There's no launcher system, turn-table or generator block on the back of any of those trucks. There were no cook-offs but a LOT of thrown burning chunks of debris. Looked more like ammo and supplies - which would be about as bad a loss. The problem is the strike... Russia really doesn't have any of those left to use.

    • @niko7903
      @niko7903 2 місяці тому +3

Yeah, Germany sent a bunch of 8x8 MAN HX (very very similar looking to MAN KAT1 Patriot) vehicles for transport. You can't see launch tubes or large generator boxes behind cab, they stick up quiet a bit, and you can see the side of road where you should see the launchers in the IR image. The only thing that gives me a little pause, is maybe being able to see the swing-out support arms in wreckage, but it could also be the IRIS-T missile truck that uses MAN HX.
Still, even if it's Patriot, it definitely wasn't the command unit which only has 3 axles, so likely only launchers, and perhaps empty launchers at that. Those are like $10m vehicles minus the missiles I believe, not the several hundred million loss some people fear. Plus Ukraine is getting a few more Patriots pretty soon.

Still, I'm not certain it was Patriot. The missile tubes and generator box should be taller than the cab, in the IR video it doesn't seem to be visible, you can see the side of road with tree foliage where you should see the outline of the missile box tubes. Can you make them out?
Germany reportedly gave Ukraine like a hundred MAN HX 8x8 vehicles (I believe), and while I might just be coping, perhaps it could've been something other than Patriot, like missile replenishment being transported and sitting lower on the bed (why I can't see the silhouette). Again, maybe wishful thinking, but why would Russia, dishonest to the point of absurdity Russia, who are desperate to get the Patriot, report it as S-300 even days after people had started pointing at it as Patriot (was on official Russian military Telegram channel)? Maybe they observed round S-300 missile tubes being transported and reported it as such? IDK, again probably wishful thinking.

SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA: On 9 March 2022, the U.S. European Command announced, in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, that it would send two Patriot air defense systems to Poland to "proactively counter any potential threat to U.S. and Allied forces and NATO territory".
Poland asked Germany to transfer the Patriots to Ukraine. Germany declined
On 19 December, Ukraine President Zelenskyy talked about negotiating personally with US President Biden over a potential transfer of Patriot missile systems. He said they offer "a (better) distance, radius of reflection, protection". Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that this was the most difficult diplomatic issue they had faced.
On 20 December, it was reported that the Biden administration would be delivering another $1.85 billion in aid to Ukraine that would include a Patriot battery.
On 21 December, during a meeting with Zelenskyy in front of the press at the White House Biden confirmed that the United States would send a Patriot battery to Ukraine. It would take "months" to train the "dozens" of soldiers needed to operate the system, probably in Germany.
Providing a Patriot missile system is seen as a symbol of Western engagement in the conflict, although its range is only local.
On 5 January 2023, Germany announced that it would supply one Patriot battery to Ukraine as a part of their own military aid package.
On 17 January 2023, the Netherlands announced it will send one launcher, and on 20 January, the Netherlands announced it will send a second launcher.[133] The Dutch government announced it will send launchers and missiles, not complete systems (a battery) which includes radars, etc.
On August 9, 2023, it was announced that Germany would provide an additional complete Patriot battery to Ukraine. The system was delivered on December 13 after the Ukrainian crew completed training in Germany.
During October 2023, under a program called "FrankenSAM" Western and Soviet air defence technologies are being combined in Ukraine. One of three programs, involves a Ukrainian radar guiding a Patriot missile. It has been tested and is expected to be operational by winter
On 19 April, a German government website announced that the country had delivered a Patriot system to Ukraine.
On April 27, a second Patriot battery was delivered, from the United States.

This incident demonstrates the beauty of the Patriot system. The radar and command truck wasn't anywhere near the launcher truck.
The radar data links with the launch truck to give the missile target information without the radar or command vehicle needing to be near the launcher.
US AWACS can do the same data link targeting for AMRAAM air to air missiles (possibly the NASAMs AIM 120 also) and the Russian A50 AWACS can do data link targeting for S400 surface to air missiles.
That said, this was definitely a learning opportunity for Ukraine. If a system isn't in use, it needs to be moving. Fuel is much cheaper than the vehicles and MUCH easier to get than either patriot or s300 launcher.
Further, there absolutely needs to be an Avenger or Gepard near the longer range units to provide closer range coverage from drones. Again, a long range missile should never be an issue because the vehicles should ALWAYS be moving if they aren't shooting (while deployed in this forward "offensive defense" role).
Also note, that "patriot truck" could be a NASAM truck. It would make sense to have a mid range system protecting a longer range system like s300 or patriot, but that begs the question "why wasn't it active if the convoy wasn't MOVING.
Bottom line, if you're not shooting, keep moving and definitely keep short range protection with the expensive (and potentially irreplaceable) long range systems.

Some people did mention something else. Its was from reddit:
    "Very difficult to tell.
The first vehicle is a Mitsubishi L-200; Ukraine uses these as escort vehicles.
The second vehicle does look like a MAN-HX (German Patriot are on MAN KAT-1), which is used for the IRIS-T SLM but also as a standalone supply truck. See my reasoning here. The "beige" camouflage does indeed point towards an IRIS-T SLM component, as the first systems Ukraine got were originally earmarked for Egypt; that is the reason why Ukrainians are driving them around in desert camo. In the very first frame you can however see, that this vehicle does not have loaded anything, as the tree-line is visible behind it.
The third and fourth truck are totally unidentifiable; The third one also appears to be "empty". They are also very close together; maybe one got stuck and they were trying to tow? Maybe a refueling operation?
From the fifth vehicle only the front is visible, which looks like a really old KrAZ 255b, which are still in use with Ukraine - even the color matches. The IR-footage also shows a three-axle truck in exactly this position, but it also might have arrived at a later point as it does look pretty much intact.
The sixth vehicle is only visible in the first frame of the video; the size I think matches to another Pickup or small truck."

Don't think the Radar truck is too bad in cost (could be wrong), not like the main command (ECS), that's like several hundred million. It pretty much for sure wasn't there, it has 3 axles.
I'm still really skeptical that this is Patriot. You can't see the silhouette of launchers or generator boxes behind the cab, they are pretty tall and you can see the side of road behind the truck where the launchers should be. The MAN KAT1 8x8 looks very very similar to MAN HX that is used for IRIS-T SLM, and Germany also gave lots of empty MAN HX 8x8 for transporting heavy stuff through rough roads. I really think there is a decent chance this was either transport convoy, or different weapon system, because I really could never see Ukraine transporting or deploying Patriot that close to each other, it just wouldn't happen, they know they are close to front, they know Russia recon drones are all over the place, they know Russia is absolutely desperate to take Patriot out, especially after the last month of downed air-assets.
Maybe it was Patriot, but likely only launchers, which is the best part to lose (easier to replace, and can take from another system for the time being), maybe they were empty, and hopefully this means the main command and operations soldiers for Patriot were not there with those components.
A few more complete Patriot systems are already scheduled to arrive this year, too.

    • @niko7903
      @niko7903 2 місяці тому

@@kessyx5311 That's a good point, really wasn't paying super close attention to the actual explosion and was just focusing in on the vehicle identification, now I see the burning material after it landed as well, I'm just still not sure if it's Patriot or not. Probably a bit too much cope on my part, though.
Though, can you see the silhouette of the launchers or generator box behind the cabs? I sure can't.
So, again here are things that leave me questioning it, if you have answers that dispel them, I'd appreciate your opinion.
      - The seemingly absent silhouettes of anything on the backs of the 8x8s, even with cooler surfaces, in my mind you should be able to see an outline. They should be higher than the cab of vehicles, and it sure seems like you can instead see the side of the road and the tree foliage where launchers should be visible. The only vehicle that seemed to have anything on the bed was the 3rd vehicle in middle group (which they didn't show good footage of in daylight), which I think only had 3 axles (which still could be other Patriot component vehicle but I believe they would've shown video of it if it were).
      - MAN HX looks extremely similar to KAT1. The HX is used for the IRIS-T SLM. Though, the amount of apparent solid fuel might be a bit too great to be IRIS-T, but I couldn't say.
      - Daylight video, 8x8s appear to be desert beige (unless that's just very even fire damage), Ukraine received IRIS-T systems that were bound for Egypt and still had desert camo.
      - Ukraine apparently received nearly a hundred MAN HX 8x8 transports, could they have been transporting ammo, transporting missile replenishments that sit lower on the bed, or perhaps could they have fitted S-300 launchers on the HX (their aging S-300 fleet apparently was pretty rundown)?
      - Russia is extremely dishonest to the point of absurdity. Initially labeling it S-300 is a bit strange, being very slow to push the Patriot claim (the official Russian military Telegram channel had it as S-300 days after, still might be labeled as S-300, haven't checked), knowing just how intent Russia is on getting the Patriot and the information war, I would think this would've been pushed in a more grand presentation (maybe I haven't seen it).
Finally, I guess I'm just incredulous that Ukrainian soldiers who have been entrusted with the Patriot system for this long, probably their most prized weapon system, would at any point in time, especially so close to the front, even if one got stuck in the mud, would position multiple components so close together deployed or in transport. They should know better, they know Russian recon drones are constantly 30-40km in their territory. So, it really just shocks me that this would ever happen like this.
So, just hoping there is a better explanation I guess, but at least it only appears to be launchers at most, they can take launchers from other system hopefully, and apparently additional systems are on the way.

It is concerning that ukraine does not know that there are reconaissance drones in the area. Those are probably not the usual quadcopters that are used at the front, but longer range drones. For russia to be able to score a hit on a target, drones must a) penetrate deep into ukrainian territory, b) have enough time to search for targets, c) the target location needs to be communicated, d) the rocket must be launched, reach its target. And the whole time, including for damage assessment afterwards, the drone was there. So the question is why the drone was not spotted. Even if it was not shot down, this would have given the ukrainians the opportunity to quickly change locations. Also, why is the patriot launcher not guarded by gepard? Maybe because of mobility issues compared to wheeled vehicles? Gepard could have spotted the drone and shot it down.

No wonder they are trying to blackmail and guilt trip the Westerners to send them more weapons, since it was the West who told them to refuse the negotiations.

    • @rotatingparrot4625
      @rotatingparrot4625 2 місяці тому +4

@@evilleader1991 The thermal is not the problem, the problem is that they decided to cut the video to only a second before the missile hits while zoomed out to the max. There's plenty of footage before that when the camera was zoomed in and they were studying the convoy, but they specifically did not show it. It's shady through and through.
Couple that with the fact the soldiers who not only filmed it but also uploaded it said it's an S300... It's just dodgy.
I'll wait for some actual proof, rather than trusting some keyboard 'analysts' trying to discrern the hardware from a completely burnt out wreck. If actual evidence comes out and it turns out it's a Patriot then so be it. It's just fishy is all.
