Glad you acknowledged that Putting Your Hoof Down and this episode had completely different lessons. The former was about finding balance between self-respect and respecting others. This one was about building characters to shield yourself from uncomfortable situations but then getting lost in said characters. Both are very real situations when it comes to antisocial people.
Agreed. I find it kind of bizarre when people insist that this was just Putting Your Hoof Down all over again. There are certainly a fair share of similarities, but the overall situations and lessons were very different despite the elements they have in common. Then again, saying "This is just X Episode all over again" because of a few basic similarities between ideas (regardless of how much the details vary) seems to be relatively common in this fandom, especially as of the last few seasons. I mean, I wouldn't find it as baffling if people were just saying "I just think that by now Fluttershy doesn't really need that lesson" or something like that, because it would just be an issue of different opinions on how (and how much) the character has grown. But saying that it's the exact same lesson just leaves me confused, because it seems pretty obvious to me that the lesson they were teaching is different (one about being assertive and confident without being aggressive and antagonistic, one about losing yourself behind the masks you wear to hide from others).
I guess many people just don't understand/see the smaller, very realistic psychological details Fluttershy's episodes deal with, and thus don't know how to separate them and the morals from each other. Maybe it's not as easy to see them if you're not an antisocial person yourself or don't really get psychology and the human mind in general, but honestly, I think it's mostly just people not paying enough attention. A lot of people are there just for the silly cartoon aspect of it and don't see the real gist of each episode behind it. Which is fine in general, but not if you're gonna critique the lessons with that attitude. Basically the only thing similar between this episode and "Putting Your Hoof Down" is that both feature Fluttershy going too far and having to tone back down a bit. Which is what half the morals are about in every show anyway.
It's scary how well that PMV song fits this episode. XD This episode further confirmed one thing for me: I never want a job in retail or customer service. Too much stress and hassle dealing with customers. Still, a Fluttershy-centered episode? I'll happily go into one blind any day. =) I'm glad you enjoyed this episode. I did, but I can understand peoples' criticisms with it, saying it feels like an episode that should've happened in an earlier season, that the resolution felt rushed or incomplete, that Fluttershy's having more confidence issues, etc. However, it's not that Fluttershy was reset to 0 for this episode. She's still the same more-assertive Fluttershy she's become. She just didn't have experience in this particular field, and that affected her confidence. She _was_ perfectly willing to assist at _Rarity for You_ until she realized what she was up against: a store that was bigger than she remembered, and with a very elaborate set-up, not to mention pushy and rude Manehattan customers. She did try being herself for that first customer, and it didn't work; Rarity had to bail her out. So, she took Rarity's advice on 'clothes make the pony' to heart, and thought it was the only way she could communicate on the same level as the customers. This resulted in Snooty/Severeshy, Hipstershy, and Fluttergoth. Unfortunately, she got too wrapped up in her roles, forgot she was supposed to be a salespony, and started insulting customers, and then ended up insulting her own friends and calling the raccoon family 'rodents'. While shocking to hear her of all ponies use such a word, it's not even correct, since raccoons are just mammals. It was only further evidence of how far gone she'd become. I do wonder how Discord would react to it all, lol Perhaps the resolution did seem a little confusing, but the way I see it, Rarity 'terminating' all three other Shys at once seemed appropriate for the situation. It made it clear that _none_ of them were welcome, and that snapped Fluttershy back to her senses. And, like you said, this whole thing wasn't simply a redo of Putting Your Hoof Down, given the context. Fluttershy's always had the inner strength she believed she lacked. How else could she have made those others Shys? Maybe, like Pinkie said, she had a little too much, but she's an incredible actress (and able to switch between Shys in the blink of an eye, something I'd expect from Pinkie, not her), and a lot more knowledgeable than she gives herself credit for. I'll always love and be proud of her no matter what comes her way, because seeing her grow over the course of this show has been one of my favorite things about it.
I think what fans have to remember is that MLP:FIM is like the Tiny Toon Adventures of this decade, as StarVs is most likely the Animaniacs (arguments could place Gravity Falls and/or Steven Universe; still too early for Ducktales). TTA tested the waters of what cartoons can do if animators put their hearts into it full gear while Animaniacs swam the full distance. The real difference is that MLP has outlasted both previous series (almost combined now), while StarVs takes a while to release like most shows on DisneyXD. That and zero Steven Spielberg. The point being that MLP has opened a door for animators by breaking grounds for what we expect from a cartoon series, including genre expectations, allowing shows like StarVs and Steven Universe to further challenge the medium and cross new waters. This was my favorite episode since green isn’t your color, as green isn’t your color won my heart as it’s what introduced my favorite ship (RarityShy) and introduced PhotoFinish. I don't know what my exact order would've been, but if i was Rarity, i'd went to Fluttershy well before Applejack for this
i think DWK can say the very best thing about Maud, "Your waifu has been taken by somepony else and she didn't even knew that you were there in the first place."
Andrea Libman Must had a field day With this episode by doing the rodants for pinkie pie and changing her voice with fluttershy voice there. I might of spelled rodants wrong so you can correct me
I did like this episode. Not exactly what I expected(not being both a Fluttershy and Rarity episode) but, I still enjoyed this one. Not sure why exactly the fact that Fluttershy’s “freaky knowledge of sewing” wasn’t established in this episode, it’s beyond me. In any case, I did like seeing Fluttershy putting on all those character impersonations, they were fun; even though she got way into it to the point of being mean and insensitive. The “Warrior of Inner Strength” is of course my favorite and that outfit that Rarity made for Fluttershy was amazing; it kinda left in awe.
I was just thinking that everyone has something to do except Fluttershy : Rainbow Dash - wonderbolts training, Twilight busy as princess, Aplejack running the farm, Pinkie busy at sugar cube corner and of course Rarity busy with the shops
I wouldn't say this is a retread of Putting you Hoof down, but I would say it's more of a continuation, and it shows that Fluttershy still has a problem concerning getting into certain personalities too much. This episode was actually handled a lot better than the old one, and if we consider both of them together, it's probably possible to psychologically analyze Fluttershy and how her mind handles that sort of thing. It's definitely a realistic problem.
Amazing reaction add I loved how Fluttershy looks and affects her personality depending on looks but the clothes don't make a person it's about your task to satisfy your clients believe me it's not easy
Your attempt at trying to connect with the "hip" new generation only further shows the futility of bothering of trying to make connections, and proves in this meaningless world the only true connection that matters is our connection with our dead, black souls.
So Fluttershy got carried away with her characters. She looked good as a goth. And at 15:24 I saw Inky Rose. I wonder if Inky knows that goth pony ? And how about an episode with gothic ponies ? For example when summer vacation is over and the new school year is about to start, the cutie mark crusaders are sad because they have to study and do homework again. Inky Rose hears this and she approaches them and she suggests that they should wear there emotions. So she offers them some gothic clotes, and the fillies accept. At the first day of school the crusaders enter dressed as goths, and Cheerilee, the other students are speechless. Cheerilee asks them why are they dressed like this and they explain that they are sad and disappointed because summers over. In recess Diamond Tiara asks them where they got those clotes, they tell her and after school Diamond Tiara buys some clotes from Inky Rose. Even Silver Spoon buys some. With a lot of students buying gothic clotes, the main 6, Spoiled Rich and the other parents have come up with a way to cheer the foals up, or the foals are going to spend the entire school year dressed as goths. And how would Sandbar, Gallus, Silver Stream,Ocellus, Yona, and Smolder look as goths ?
This was a really fun episode. I loved the different characters that Fluttershy thought of, while I do think that she went a little far; especially calling the raccoons rodents, but honestly I don't think it's as bad as some people say it is. It's nowhere near as bad as Putting Your Hoof Down, at any rate, so I can definitely live with it. And I found this episode to be really funny. Some reactors miss that this episode took place in two days, what with Rarity saying that the fashion show was tomorrow, and the raccoons traveling to Ponyville, happened in two days time. Yes I do think that the writing could have been better, polished a little better; but the episode was mostly for jokes, and that's okay as well. From Rarity asking pretty much everypony except Fluttershy (while some may think that's mean, I thought it was funny, plus Rarity knows that Fluttershy isn't that brave around intimidating ponies). And of course the different ponies that Fluttershy thought up, although I get triggered whenever I hear lit or woke, that was just way too much, lol. And Spike is dragon charade, that's interesting to know! Funny little joke there. Plus Rarity firing Fluttershy three times is just hilarious, I laugh out loud every time I watch it. So yeah, overall while the writing was a little sloppy and probably could have been polished better, I thought that the jokes were spot on, really funny episode overall. Had a blast watching it.
Let me clarify slightly. I happen to have Asperger's, and it can make it difficult to understand proper social protocol. So if I see a bunch of people acting a certain way in a certain setting, I'm going to assume that it's the right thing to do, and I'll copy them.
This was a pretty good Fluttershy episode the more I watch it I get different views from it but with this season I’m trying not to let others opinions change mine especially if they’re negative and mean spirited seeing her display all those characters was awesome even though she got mean afterwards but still also I loved all the callbacks to the saddle row review 👌 nice commentary also I loved that outfit Rarity made for Fluttershy it was beautiful keep up the great work 👍 this episode had great character development for Fluttershy and Rarity she was so kind towards the animals and cared so deeply for Fluttershy and put her friends first I’m not saying she never does but I was just so impressed with her
Didn't you hear what she said? She didn't want any Manehattener to take care of her shop. Also, despite them having a monetary system, it seems that a lot is also done for free, especially between friends, money only being used for work and quantity, and in markets where wares that are unusual may be sold.
While it is a different lesson from Putting Your Hoof Down, there is a trend with Fluttershy we see from... Ok, not necessarily since then (maybe earlier), but still. When she started to get into the Assertive Character, she was taking it too far. In Filli Vanilli when she got into the singing, she took it a bit far with all the solo parts and moves, giving Big Mac a hard time to keep up. It seems when she gets into an act, she can take it too far. To paraphrase Twilight: "All the ponies in this town" have mental issues. ;P
I wouldn't say that's exactly appropriate to say. I don't think it's a cause of mental issues, it's actually pretty easy to explain in fact. When you are repressed youre entire life, once you finally are able to express yourself, it's easy to take it too far. It's like tapping into a power you didn't know you had, and it feels good and sometimes you can go a little mad with power. Someone who loves to sing and clearly has a passion for it, but has to keep it repressed do to extreme stage fright, is going to have years of passion stored up that they had little to no outlet for until now, thus a lifetime of passion all gets unbottled at once and Fluttershy takes her new found freedom from her own anxieties too far. It's just what can happen when you spend all your life repressing things. Once fluttershy is given freedom from that, she runs wild like a cooped up horse being let into an open field. The reason a lot of people don't go through the same thing is because they have had a lifetime of trial and error to learn the line they need to not cross, but someone who is too shy to have ever tried has had no trial and error and thus never learned that line so it's easy for them to take it too far. That's not crazy, it's just what I'd expect someone like Fluttershy to struggle with. Someone who's never even gone close to the line is going to need to fail a few times before they start to get an understanding of it.
Jeeze, between Flutterbat and all the new cast, someone should probably see if she has multiple personalities. Edit: on a different note, and slightly more exciting theory, this could be the long term result of being friends with Discord...
I don’t think you ever had a song in the intro that fit better than that one, but I haven’t done the appropriate legwork so don’t quote me on that. Also, woke, that triggered me too.
Watch out for spoilers Luffy. I know you know about the leaks, but knowing they exist isn't enough to avoid them. The severely autistic side of the community is being real loud with spoilers. I've already had major points throughout the entire season completely ruined for me by pathetic pieces of shit who feel the need to blurt shit out and ruin everything for everyone. As if it wasn't bad enough when To Where and Back Again aired early in Europe and Chrysalis' return got ruined for me by bigmouths. I just wish it hadn't been this season that got leaked. If what people have blurted at me is true, this is going to be a really incredible season. I hope whoever leaked the season got caught and is never allowed near another animation studio again.
4:27 Was that Sublime? 15:48 and 18:14 That was borderline racist / speciest!!! 21:02 Reminded me of that line from T3. And firing her three characters was pretty cool.
"If it's pettable, I'll pet it." Well, technically most things are "pettable" whether you'd want to pet them is a whole other story, like, you could pet a mackerel but it'd be really uncomfortable.
Between Fluttershy, Pinkie, one customer, Snootishy, Hipstershy, and Fluttergoth, Andrea had six personalities to voice in this episode alone. I appreciate that, but I find the set-up contrived and the conclusion seems very off -- at least until someone can convince me Fluttershy wasn't just bullying that poor pony. That's not inner strength to me.
What I got from that scene was that the pony was being a bitch and intentionally trying to unsettle/upset Rarity by making a snarky comment. She wanted to undermine what Rarity was doing and cause her trouble. Fluttershy then jumped in and told her off. To me, it felt deserved. Rarity only looked concerned for a moment because she was worried Fluttershy might have been slipping back into her personas, but she was reassured that it was just normal Fluttershy speaking up for her friend.
There's still a big difference between being assertive and supportive, and being a bully. Fluttershy needs to find that balance again, but I still think she's the most powerful of the Mane6.
BNuts Early in the episode they establish that dealing with these people takes a different kind of attitude. She adopts theirs as a strategy, and unfortunately gets too into it. This is actually a common mental phenomenon known as "Warden's Law". Whenever someone is put in a position of power and gets into a sort of character, they will do some very strange and out of character things, usually cruel or sadistic in nature as we see here. They use this mental phenomenon as a vehicle to tell a more intricate story. She needed the personas to find her inner strength, but that strength went to her head and because she used personas to channel it, she didn't consciously realize what she was doing.
That still doesn't explain why Fluttershy's 'Inner Warrior' version was so harsh to that pony. She just shouted in her face, which could be seen as _worse_ than anything she did as a shopkeeper.
Can anyone tell me what's the name of Rarity's second power pose, between "confident warrior" and "showpony"? Thanks to a friend of mine I can't hear anything other than "probe molest". :(
It was an alright conflict not just because it's a kids show, more importantly, it was a solid conflict because the conflict itself made sense with Pinkie's character. I don't think I need to go into further detail since a decent amount of people already explained to you what went down with Pinkie's thought process that episode. I understand the whole message you were trying to give, but I felt like it could've been worded better since it felt like you weren't giving MLP enough credit compared to shows like StarVSTFOE since it's a "kid's show" even though Star is the same in that regard. Star definitely has more deeper and maturer themes they traverse, but MLP is also no stranger to meaningful and in-depth conflicts and characters. Just not in the format that Star is built around.
I agree that it could have been worded better, because I even kept trying to stress that I was meaning no disrespect to MLP. I was trying to figure out how to say that both series have depth, but Star has a story that I take more seriously and give more weight to character consistency on. I was trying to say that sometimes MLP's conflicts really will be the bare bones of something simple that doesn't bear overthinking, which is why episode 3 wasn't as off putting as I first thought it was. Words are hard, man.
I see what you did in the description, and I do not approve. Seriously though, looks like you had pretty much the same reaction to this episode as me; that firing gag was hilarious. But for some reason I keep hearing negative reactions to it from various people, and I don't really know why. Perhaps they are not sufficiently woke. (ducks)
A tiny bit of nitpicking but there : Took me a while to find it but when Fluttershy talked about her uneasiness with fashion i may have recalled her sgyness and the green isn't your color episode... but also this : ua-cam.com/video/toKSJqwO02I/v-deo.html little bit... So..; i guess that got retconned? (P.S: Maybe Luffy pointed it out in the video, i didn't watch it yet since i can't right now)
Oh, thank you. Looks like she wasn't the only one talking out of her rear here. I took at face's value the fast paced complains and the mention that she "helped" fix the dress by the end of the episode... pretty much all i remembered from the episode anyway, aside from "The Art of the Dress".
Zéphyr Fields She may know a good bit about sewing but im not sure if fluttershy knew what she was talking about in that scene considering the dress she wanted came out bad.
Even in that episode where Rarity made everyone's dresses for the Grand Galloping Gala, Fluttershy still didn't know what in the world she was talking about, she just said stuff that sounded good.
Does this mean that you take back what you said about Pinkie in the last episode? Like you don’t mean it anymore because you went in the episode again in a different mind set? I agreed with what you said about Pinkie I’m just curious
To put it specifically: Pinkie was still in the wrong and overreacting, just like the episode portrays. But she was also a heck of a lot more understandable and sympathetic. Pinkie always takes every situation to 300%, just like "Party Of One" and "Secrets and Pies". So it was just another case of that.

I don't know what my exact order would've been, but if i was Rarity, i'd went to Fluttershy well before Applejack for this

Oh yeah, so true. Trust me, I know I´ve had a history with that occupation.
i think DWK can say the very best thing about Maud, "Your waifu has been taken by somepony else and she didn't even knew that you were there in the first place."
Yee’s spike did say charades champion and it was awesome
Andrea Libman Must had a field day With this episode by doing the rodants for pinkie pie and changing her voice with fluttershy voice there.
I might of spelled rodants wrong so you can correct me
I love Rarity's gunslinger squint at 6:56.
14:43 "Ohhh, that look!"
More than a few people will be seeing Fluttergoth in their dreams tonight.
Thanks for reminding everyone about DA FluffyVixen. She's worth all the love we send her way.
22:52 - lol, what the hell was that? :P
But yeah, I loved Goth Fluttershy the best of the lot.
Lol, that "black duck" is a lake-based bird called a loon.
Love that we have a Tim Gunn pony now. And how has he not been a judge at any of Rarity's fashion shows?
this reaction was like totally lit fam
I'm not one for the new lingo these days, but it was rather hilarious, if in a skin crawling kind of way, to have Flutters do that bit.
14:19 Luffyiscool channels his inner BronyBurningAxe.
15:23 Jeebus, that face!
Arnold would be proud of Rarity in this one.
That "black duck" is called a Loon. There all the rage in Canada
Amazing reaction add I loved how Fluttershy looks and affects her personality depending on looks but the clothes don't make a person it's about your task to satisfy your clients believe me it's not easy
Hipstershy also said savage, squad, and lit.
I think in a very early concept of this episode Discord was going to replace the Raccoon
Valley Glamour and Hipstershy were like a totally bangin' ass late Litsmas Present.
This episode is the episode that convinced me to get back with the show. It is absolutely perfect
Lit, fam.
Your attempt at trying to connect with the "hip" new generation only further shows the futility of bothering of trying to make connections, and proves in this meaningless world the only true connection that matters is our connection with our dead, black souls.
It's official Rarity's clothes are SCPs.
loved the reaction luffy its nice for you to be such a caring person
5:49 Good to know I'm not the only one who thought of the SCP Organization when I heard that XD
I've used that technique before, and it's actually kinda helped.
Let me clarify slightly.
I happen to have Asperger's, and it can make it difficult to understand proper social protocol. So if I see a bunch of people acting a certain way in a certain setting, I'm going to assume that it's the right thing to do, and I'll copy them.
the black and white "duck" might actually be a warbler
i truly love Flutters in this
20:58 basically Identity re-enacted by ponies.
Loved your reaction, my favorite reaction to this episode. I hope you enjoy episode 5.
This was a pretty good Fluttershy episode the more I watch it I get different views from it but with this season I’m trying not to let others opinions change mine especially if they’re negative and mean spirited seeing her display all those characters was awesome even though she got mean afterwards but still also I loved all the callbacks to the saddle row review 👌 nice commentary also I loved that outfit Rarity made for Fluttershy it was beautiful keep up the great work 👍 this episode had great character development for Fluttershy and Rarity she was so kind towards the animals and cared so deeply for Fluttershy and put her friends first I’m not saying she never does but I was just so impressed with her
The black duck is a loon. They have very pretty wolf like cries.
Don't mind me. Just letting my fluttershy side out. :)
Hm, i just reflected on that Daffy Duck is a loon .... ^_^
Fluttergoth helps Edward Scissorhooves!
Wow! That pmv was sooooo fitting!
10:07 I think it's closer to Nightmaid Rarity
21:20 "Second favorite joke of the season."
What was your first? Was it Ember's "Alright! If you promise to stop singing, Smolder can stay!"?
No, it was the one that had me in a laughing fit.
The floating heads in The Maud Couple!
"I never learned to read!"

Rarity could just...you know...HIRE someone. Instead you get your shy friend with bad social skills to do it.
Business pony, everyone.
Have you seen Tara and Andrea's guest appearance in Ducktales? It's amazing.
Ryan Lohner I can't wait for the new episodes of Duck Tales 2017 to continue
Also, someone needs to draw Flutterbat in the Fluttergoth outfit.
Bronycooper already had 2 days ago! ua-cam.com/video/Qzi21qW226A/v-deo.html
Awesome find! Thanks! :)
Jeeze, between Flutterbat and all the new cast, someone should probably see if she has multiple personalities.
Edit: on a different note, and slightly more exciting theory, this could be the long term result of being friends with Discord...
Not quite, but I have a theory. It has to do with the Stare.
Also no, raccoons are not rodents. Not quite sure what their nearest relative is, but I do know it's not rodents.
I don’t think you ever had a song in the intro that fit better than that one, but I haven’t done the appropriate legwork so don’t quote me on that.
Also, woke, that triggered me too.
9:57 It's more like the white lab coat effect
I love cute, adorable Fluttershy, this evil Fluttershy is ehh, I don't like her.
Tim Gunn in pony form? Nice. Too bad it ain't him voicing himself.
This episode has the valley girl stereotype, and the goth stereotype
this Ep was lit af
Reel Big Fish, actually.
Luffyiscool Oh, okay.
What was the name of the song?
The New Version of You
Luffyiscool Ah, thank you!
"If it's pettable, I'll pet it." Well, technically most things are "pettable" whether you'd want to pet them is a whole other story, like, you could pet a mackerel but it'd be really uncomfortable.
I meant more conventionally, like simple cats and dogs lol
Luffyiscool I know, I was just being weird. XP
BNuts I'm not saying she wasn't bullying that Pony. I'm saying that the inner strength went too far into bullying territory.
Can anyone tell me what's the name of Rarity's second power pose, between "confident warrior" and "showpony"? Thanks to a friend of mine I can't hear anything other than "probe molest". :(
Gold medalist!
Oh! That makes much more sense. Thank you (and for the reaction too)!
One dislike 282 likes that's a first :)
Decided I'd watch this episode because I was legit bored.

Was the british pony adele?
LuffyisWOKE
I see what you did in the description, and I do not approve.
Seriously though, looks like you had pretty much the same reaction to this episode as me; that firing gag was hilarious. But for some reason I keep hearing negative reactions to it from various people, and I don't really know why. Perhaps they are not sufficiently woke.
(ducks)
Are you wearing an Wreck It Ralph shirt?
Nope, it's this (in black):

14:55 please tell me that's supposed to be an Adele pony
She's actually supposed to be a Mad Men pony(she was in the background of the other Manehatten episodes too)
oh my bad, I never watched Mad Men, she just looked like adele to me :) Thanks
This episode is very divisive. :v
Jesus my pony version can be really evil.
Isn't she very similar to discord??? :( :(
Is grannys gone wild soon?
Recording it tomorrow!
Then hopefully it can be out before episode 6 rolls around.

Why don't FluffyVixen's parents not approve of her videos?
You'd have to ask her yourself, because I don't know the answer to that.
Okay. Thanks anyways.

Nice
I know your jokin, but that description. xP
A tiny bit of nitpicking but there :
Took me a while to find it but when Fluttershy talked about her uneasiness with fashion i may have recalled her sgyness and the green isn't your color episode... but also this : ua-cam.com/video/toKSJqwO02I/v-deo.html little bit... So..; i guess that got retconned?
(P.S: Maybe Luffy pointed it out in the video, i didn't watch it yet since i can't right now)
Fluttershy had no idea what she was talking about, she was just making things up.
To put it specifically:
Pinkie was still in the wrong and overreacting, just like the episode portrays.
But she was also a heck of a lot more understandable and sympathetic.
Pinkie always takes every situation to 300%, just like "Party Of One" and "Secrets and Pies".
So it was just another case of that.
Luffyiscool ok that makes sense thanks
I hope you're able to avoid the season 8 spoiler that came out a short while ago.
By not approve of her videos, do you mean UA-cam in general or that they are against the My Little Pony series?
UA-cam in general, it would seem.
