I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.
+Luke Ventry Hey man I'm no pro fisherman but 1rod1reel recommended the Abu Garcia Black Max reel to me and I have to say I have never felt better. It's really inexpensive for how well it runs and I have only once gotten a backlash on it! I definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a first baitcasting reel, it was my first!
Currently in the NAVY stationed in Pensacola, Florida, and I watch your videos daily. They make me miss bass fishing back in Louisiana, and now I fish saltwater, which is way different. Thanks for giving me something to look forward to when I finally get to go back to Louisiana though!
+James Turner That is so awesome James! Thanks for the support. My family lives close to Pensacola Beech in Perdido Key so I'm familiar with the area. Thanks for your service and thanks for watching!
Your videos are getting better…I guess I would say, more professional. You present yourself and everything you do in such a personal genuine way…but that is the way professionals work, as the goal is for the finished product to be as if the audience is actually there in the midst of the video…and you kinda pull that off! Today, that was sheer heartfelt anticipation for that reel, and one couldn’t help but get caught up in the unfolding drama! Plus, you tend to throw in a bit of humor, which makes it all the better! So, high praise for how you put these episodes together! Don’t stop!
I feel ya. Decades ago as a teenager I saved up and bought on lay-by, first generation Cardinal 3 and 4 spinning reels. Plus ultra at the time. Not skirted, by still, to this day, really nice reels. I had been wearing out average reels every few months at the time. I never looked back from the best.
So which reel do you think is better? Old or new? I just got a used Metanium 15 DC and I think I may send it back and get an older one. I also noticed that your DC7 makes the noise when you crank the handle, my newer one only makes it when I cast. Are the newer ones just different?
Jon, I"ve been looking at the Japanese Shimano Aldebaran 50 0r 51 XG. I was wondering if it is worth the extra money for the Aldebaran over other high end reels on the market?
1:49 -- That is so true! When I do it around the public, folks always think that I am a retarded or crazy Asian kid on the street. LOL. By the way, I am totally with you on 7:00. As I have mentioned on your instagram post, I got a Shimano Antares DC 7 for my father back in the days. Japanese products are just the bomb! All my rods and reels are either daiwa or shimano, with a few exceptions (i.e. ugly stik, st. croix). When it comes to lures, I am a big fan of Lucky Craft, Mega Bass, etc. And Senkos are a killer. And Gary Yamamoto is Japanese. Lol.
It's crazy to see where you are now I remember this was the first vid I ever watched of yours back in like 2016 when my family was moving betweens houses man y'all have been an inspiration and done a hell of a lot for the fishing community and me personally ❤️🗣️💯😈
Hey Jon do you like your 2008 jdm shimano digital chip reel or is your 2015 shimano $420 reel (your fav) ?? Which is the better real to prevent backlash and for casting distance? I had the Calcutta dc te digital reel when I was younger. I paid $599 for it. Loved it. What's your opinion bro? Im Brandon. Remember I am fishing inshore bass n halibut in saltwater off my boat. I really like to dropshot n crank sits. Hit me back yeah? Ready to buy your choice. ✌️
Jon B. was this reel used. I want to save up for an antares dc its 369.00 but you have to use PayPal but anyways the reel is still good just a few scratches what do you think
You would love the new Shimano Anteras DC 16 that just came out. If you are ever back in Ohio or Michigan, let me know. You can try mine out. It's also from Japan.
Jon, was wondering what your opinion on buying used shimano dc reels is. How is your 08 metanium DC holding up? Was looking at the exsence dc but really unsure what to get and from where.
What are your thoughts on the Aldebaran? I thought you had one also? I wanna hear you opinion. I personally have the reel and it's the best reel I've ever owned.
I'm anxious to see your review of this reel after you use it in the water. This is my second video of yours that I watched and now I'm a subscriber. Keep up the good work.
The DC that I bought 10 years ago is the "Round" series (silver/gray color) and I love it. It flies across the sky when I want it to but I have so many other cast and spinning Shimano reels and because I don;t want to scratch it, I put it up locked in a safe, secure, secret place where it will probably sit until I die. I had a nightmare once where I was fishing off of a causeway in Rockport, TX (at night) and when I went to whaylay it,out from 14 feet off the water, I accidently let go and never saw it again. Hope you enjoy your reel! LOL!
Does the reel auto reel back in the line, and if it does would it keep going if it brought the lure or whatever bait your using back in until it breaks your line?
Full digital reel episode?! I always wanted a Metanium myself! I honestly just found a shimano chronarch on a falcon rod today at a pawn shop in Kansas picked it up and left with it for $30
Sup Jon B. Hey now that you've had that new Metanium DC reel how does it cast?? Is it really as good as it says with backlashes and what setting do you have your brakes on.. regardless of when you made this video I'm still trying to get one of those reels.. I've never had a Shimano before and I see you and 1Rod1Reel using them and they look so dope and cast extremely far.. anyways great vids bro keep it up!!
+Jose Romero I don't think they make much of a difference. I have a few rods with Micros but I don't prefer them over the rods with regular guides wrapped on the blank. The only reel benefit is weight reduction.
Your editing has gotten better. Similar to CaseyNeistat. You're getting better as you go along. On another side note, what baitcast reel do you recommend under $100? I been using spinning reels when i surf fish and i started getting into freshwater a couple months ago. I use a 6'6" rod and just got a cheap academy brand baitcast reel. I been practicing and my backlashes are getting less and less. I still can't figure out how to do overhand cast but forehand/backhand i'm great at now (used to play tennis). Keep it up man! Totally subbed now :)
+Kane Somoso Thanks Kane, Casey is a legend. He makes some of these best Vlogs hands down. I would look into the less expensive Lew's or the Daiwas for bait casters under $100. Thanks for watching man!
that's pretty cool. you still thumbing the spool... or does the chip just keep the spool at stable speed to help with backlash. idk. I've heard about these reels awhile ago just never seen one.
+Bruce Millard No, you still have to thumb the spool but you don't need to feather it as much. You can pretty much take your thumb completely off until it hits the water, I find that it sometimes slows the free spool down which results in like one or two loops but never completely stops the reel from free spooling. I'm still learning though so that may change in the future. Thanks for watching Bruce!
Hey bud, about to pull the trigger on one of these. Will use it as a flipper on a 7'6 XH jig rod. Gonna have 65lb braid on it, how did like flippin with it? Have a couple Metanium MGL and Chronarchs as well, but hoping to get your opinion on what to expect. Thanks
I've fished several of the DC reels. Some are more for backlash control, like the Scorpion, and the Metanium. They're awesome, but don't offer much different than their non-DC counterparts. If you get the Calais DC or Calcutta TE DC, they're distance monsters.
I love the fact I live here in japan and have 4 fishing shops within walking distance of my house. they truly are the best at designing and creating fishing lures and equipment.! I'm going to have some great stuff to bring back home when I am finished here. the only unfortunate thing is if I want to catch LMB I have to take almost a 3 hour train ride to catch the big ones.! and 2 hours for SMB ..so I am stuck catching seabass for the time being.
What would be a good reel for top water to pair with the Kistler Magnesium 6'9 Mh? I'm kinda on a budget of around $100. Thought about the Concept A from 13 fishing but that's a little much.
+chase johnson I wish! Maybe in the future, all the music I use is from very talented artists on Soundcloud. I leave all the links in the descriptions.
what would a good rod size and type of reel be for casting lighter cranks and spinners because what I mainly use right now is a semi crappy (not referring to the type of fish) mega cast bass pro shops rod and reel combo and it is terrible at casting light baits and only lets me get good casts with heavier baits like jigs, spinners, chatterbaits, ect...
Hey I couldn't help but notice your sweater that says Saint Viator Football. I actually played for their youth program and now I'm moving into highschool. Basically what I'm wondering is are you around that the St. Viator area to fish sometime?
I've been using spinning reels and rods my entire life. The casting equipment is a lot more expensive where I live, so I've never really seen the point in buying it. It seems to be a lot more popular in US than here. I wonder if I should try it out... How exactly is it superior to spinning?
hey jon. great vid. a tip for a quiet spot to film, go to the creek and or pond in the back woods. i was wondering if you would ever like to come to missouri and go fish with me and a friend and film for our channels.
Neat reel, will be interesting to see how it performs on the water. I also do woodworking as well as fishing. It took me a year to save up for a good oscillating spindle sander. But it was worth the wait. 1st [\project? Sanding jerkbait bodies, what else? Tight lines!
what kind of line do you normally use for your baitcasters, it looks green and its braided im pretty sure but idk what lb test it is or company, because I need good line but not that expensive.
+DAMIAN DAMIANAREX For braid I use Sunline FX2 55lb. If you're talking about that weird green and clear line I use thats Sunline's Flipping FC Fluorcarbon 22lb. Hope that helps!
It’s so cool coming back here and watching these old videos like I did back in high school
NEVER GIVE UP!!! XD btw, props on getting this vid up so freakin fast, based on ur txt message you got that reel about 6 hours ago!
+1Rod1ReelFishing filmed, edited, and posted today! Thanks for watching Mike, see you Friday!
You guys are my favorite UA-cam fishermen
Can you recommend a solid first bait casting reel?
+Luke Ventry Hey man I'm no pro fisherman but 1rod1reel recommended the Abu Garcia Black Max reel to me and I have to say I have never felt better. It's really inexpensive for how well it runs and I have only once gotten a backlash on it! I definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a first baitcasting reel, it was my first!
+BobikTX same here

StevenSWM that was so inspirational. 👏
So awesome! I was pumped on how stoked you were to get it. Happy for you, bro! Can't wait to see that bad boy in action!
+Just Reeling Them In Thanks dude, me too! Going to break it in this Friday.
Sweet! Looking forward to watching that vid!
I feel like you should reel JDM reels with your opposite hand
Most people won’t get it
Rhd
😂
Haha I got it
":Check out this avocado". Best part of this video.
+Ryan Getchell It was a free avocado.
Jon B. that avocado was just chillin
Jon B. I would love to fish with you , and we should.
you had me at " reduced backlash" lol
Experience helps
"Is it Jdm bro?" "Yeah, it's an r34 gtr" -every other kid in the States.
Being that I'm into cars too this made me laugh haha, thanks for watching.
R32s are better
Wow man I remember these videos 5+ years ago when got into fishing and it was gaining traction on yt.Crazy times now.
I feel ya. Decades ago as a teenager I saved up and bought on lay-by, first generation Cardinal 3 and 4 spinning reels. Plus ultra at the time. Not skirted, by still, to this day, really nice reels. I had been wearing out average reels every few months at the time. I never looked back from the best.
+palletjack612 That is awesome. Something so great about being able to save up to get the reel you ACTUALLY want opposed to the one is just "ok."
Any 2021 viewers? Had to come back and see little jon b and this sick reel would be cool to see if he still has it.
dude that is SICK!! I might invest in one and BTW I love how clear and good your vids look and sound
+Fish Master22 Thank you!
What fishing line are you using with your Shimano Metanium DC7?
So which reel do you think is better? Old or new? I just got a used Metanium 15 DC and I think I may send it back and get an older one. I also noticed that your DC7 makes the noise when you crank the handle, my newer one only makes it when I cast. Are the newer ones just different?
When he said JDM I instantly thought about cars😂😂
Jon, I"ve been looking at the Japanese Shimano Aldebaran 50 0r 51 XG. I was wondering if it is worth the extra money for the Aldebaran over other high end reels on the market?
How does the reel compare and is it actually worth it? Did not see a follow up video, thanks and tight lines!
1:49 -- That is so true! When I do it around the public, folks always think that I am a retarded or crazy Asian kid on the street. LOL. By the way, I am totally with you on 7:00. Thumbsup for Avacado!

Jon's reel game is hella strong!!!
lol. dude your so intense when opening that reel. I love New fishing hardware . love your video editing in all your videos. keep up the good work.
+matthew wetmore Haha thanks man! I felt like a little kid again opening up that package.
Jon B. was this reel used. I want to save up for an antares dc its 369.00 but you have to use PayPal but anyways the reel is still good just a few scratches what do you think
Jon B. doesn't 1rod use a reel like this, cause that sound of the reel sounds fermiliar
Ryan Duley yeah I see what you mean but it is to late anyways I got the excense dc
You would love the new Shimano Anteras DC 16 that just came out. If you are ever back in Ohio or Michigan, let me know. You can try mine out. It's also from Japan.
Watching this in April 21... you have come a long way Jon B.
Sorta dumb question, but what is the digital chip?
is the newer shimano a good reel for the price? and do you think it is a good all around reel for a person who is fishing 4 days or more a week?
I'm anxious to see your review of this reel after you use it in the water. This is my second video of yours that I watched and now I'm a subscriber. Keep up the good work.
Jon I have a question, what is your favorite casting real brand like general brand all around?
The DC that I bought 10 years ago is the "Round" series (silver/gray color) and I love it. It flies across the sky when I want it to but I have so many other cast and spinning Shimano reels and because I don;t want to scratch it, I put it up locked in a safe, secure, secret place where it will probably sit until I die. Hope you enjoy your reel! LOL!
You mean the calcutta te dc?, i have one too, i love it!
Jon, is the reel that you linked to on Tackle Warehouse the Digital Chip version?
How do you like the reel i have been thinking of getting one for myself
Does the reel auto reel back in the line, and if it does would it keep going if it brought the lure or whatever bait your using back in until it breaks your line?
Thinking about getting a Metanium off eBay, what do you think? How was your vender that you bought your metanium from?
I know you posted this two years ago but I’m looking for a digital chip reel myself and which one would you recommend? Any newer ones?
Full digital reel episode?! I always wanted a Metanium myself! I honestly just found a shimano chronarch on a falcon rod today at a pawn shop in Kansas picked it up and left with it for $30
Sup Jon B. Hey now that you've had that new Metanium DC reel how does it cast?? I've never had a Shimano before and I see you and 1Rod1Reel using them and they look so dope and cast extremely far.. anyways great vids bro keep it up!!
Have you used the 2015 Metanium DC? I'm trying to decide whether or not to grab this MG DC7 or the new model.
If your really interested in accurate casting reels I highly suggest the Daiwa Zillion. It's an all around great reel for functionality and accuracy.
I'm actually considering buying one. What would be the lowest I should pay to get a good one and what brands just Shimano or would diawa be good too?
Hey Jon, I have some questions about micro guides. Have you had much experience and if so would you say they really make a difference in casting?
+Jose Romero I don't think they make much of a difference. I have a few rods with Micros but I don't prefer them over the rods with regular guides wrapped on the blank. The only reel benefit is weight reduction.
For cranking I'm thinking about getting a Abu Carcia veritas 7'3" medium heavy with a lew's Mach 1 reel and 16lb fluorocarbon line. Thoughts?
Your editing has gotten better. Similar to CaseyNeistat. You're getting better as you go along. On another side note, what baitcast reel do you recommend under $100? Jon is the D.C. Better than the new one and how heavy is it am thinking on getting one
JDM...I thought you meant cars
I just graduated from buffalo grove highschool. It's cool to know someone like yourself be close by
That is an alien monster casting reel man. Great find!
that's pretty cool. you still thumbing the spool... or does the chip just keep the spool at stable speed to help with backlash. idk. I've heard about these reels awhile ago just never seen one.

were there any import duties or tariffs applied when you bought the reel? if so how much did the charge?
Hey bud, about to pull the trigger on one of these. Will use it as a flipper on a 7'6 XH jig rod. Gonna have 65lb braid on it, how did like flippin with it? Have a couple Metanium MGL and Chronarchs as well, but hoping to get your opinion on what to expect. Thanks
#1 you make great videos. #2 there is nothing better than being in college. Live it up my friend. It's the best!
+George Schwab Word. Thanks so much George!
Jon B could you do a video comparing the dc casting reels to normal casting reels?
Great video Jon! The time in editing is greatly appreciated!
I can't say that I have heard of digital control reel. That's amazing.
+The Fishing Experiment Yea I'm still blown away. Thanks for watching!
That reel looks sick! I'm an Abu Garcia guy but I might start looking at shimono.... And yet again, good work Jon! Big fan.
+James Schutt Definitely should! Thanks James!
Could you throw 2-4 oz swimbaits on a metanium or would that possibly damage the reel?
What would be a good reel for top water to pair with the Kistler Magnesium 6'9 Mh? I'm kinda on a budget of around $100. Thought about the Concept A from 13 fishing but that's a little much.
What year is that dc and does it have that wonderful wind i also buy nothing but Japan reels love them
What do u think of the scorpion DC? How do u think this compares to that?
I'm convinced you make your own beats if you don't your beat selection is amazing keep it up
+chase johnson I wish! Maybe in the future, all the music I use is from very talented artists on Soundcloud. I leave all the links in the descriptions.
nice reel man but is the chip in the reel water proof?
Hi Jon, how would you set the Metanium (13) for flipping with a 1/4oz weight?
Just got a Metanium hg dc. The instructions are in Japanese only! Any idea where I can find English instructions? Awesome videos keep it up!
do you fish tournaments for your school or any tournaments in general
what would a good rod size and type of reel be for casting lighter cranks and spinners because what I mainly use right now is a semi crappy (not referring to the type of fish) mega cast bass pro shops rod and reel combo and it is terrible at casting light baits and only lets me get good casts with heavier baits like jigs, spinners, chatterbaits, ect...
That's sick dude! You looked like a toddler on Christmas!😂😂😂 I keep replaying 3:58-4:00
+PondBassmaster Haha thanks man!
Hey I couldn't help but notice your sweater that says Saint Viator Football. I actually played for their youth program and now I'm moving into highschool. Basically what I'm wondering is are you around that the St. Viator area to fish sometime?
+fishingtheeast I went to SV.
+j0j0barz33 what year did you graduate. I attend svhs right now. Also on the football team
I actually go to Marist, I assume your talking about st. Viator near Chicago?
Do you know John Eustice? he was the Youth ministry coordinator i believe...
lookin for my first baitcaster reel can you recommend something affordable maybe entry level one? love your vids.
Still one of my fav vids. Got me into dc.
That is the sickest reel I have ever seen
Jon B. The fisherman who gave an Avocado such an amazing cameo lol
+Born2Fish Haha.
If you live in nelsonville, that's awesome. I went to OU and live in Washington County. Ever fish the AEP strip mines?
I've been using spinning reels and rods my entire life. The casting equipment is a lot more expensive where I live, so I've never really seen the point in buying it. It seems to be a lot more popular in US than here.
I wonder if I should try it out... How exactly is it superior to spinning?
hey jon. great vid. a tip for a quiet spot to film, go to the creek and or pond in the back woods. i was wondering if you would ever like to come to missouri and go fish with me and a friend and film for our channels.
I love how he said my toys
Neat reel, will be interesting to see how it performs on the water. I also do woodworking as well as fishing. It took me a year to save up for a good oscillating spindle sander. But it was worth the wait. 1st [\project? Sanding jerkbait bodies, what else? Tight lines!
Does it help reduce backlash
Jon do u fish with both right and left hand fishing reels
Hi I am wondering if a medium/medium fast 7'3" rod would be good for treble hook lures like lipless cranks and squarebills. Thanks
+Brandon Casey That's a good length for those baits if you plan on making long casts. I use my 7' 3" Medium for deep cranking.
Hey Jon, would you sell any of the old reels you don't use anymore?
What are some of those good older Shimano reels that you speak of?
dope bro! i love watching your videos they are so helpful and i have learned alot about bass fishing. thanks keep up the good work!!
+Eddie Suarez Will do, thanks Eddie!
What type of line are you using on the new reel???
Your videos look pretty professional and I really like your vlogs man... Keep up the good work. 😉
For the one with the chip do you use an app for it?
I'm getting one thanks for the review. I am always up to getting nice reliable stuff.
+ReelsonRods Anytime! Glad you liked the vid.
What is your major at hocking? I went there for Fish Management.
did you leave your knife on the truck?
what kind of line do you normally use for your baitcasters, it looks green and its braided im pretty sure but idk what lb test it is or company, because I need good line but not that expensive.
+DAMIAN DAMIANAREX For braid I use Sunline FX2 55lb. If you're talking about that weird green and clear line I use thats Sunline's Flipping FC Fluorcarbon 22lb. Hope that helps!
Thanks a lot I'm going for pike with steel wire at the end with a live target bluegill any tips?
Nice video and enjoy your new reel.
Also behold for the new Antares DC that's coming out in 2016~~after 10 years.
yes how much and were did u get it
