Used - not new. I could replace my Tesla motor used for $4k all day long. $6k buys me a brand new motor for my Tesla. And I don’t have a transmission to replace. No oil changes, no trans fluids to replace, no air filters (other then the cabin filter), brake pads last 100,000+ miles.
I love that attitude about making sure your cars are working well before you let them go. Things happen for sure, especially when dealing with older cars.

The buyer bought the car knowing the motors are iffy, but it seemed fine so he bought it. He was offered an "extended warranty" and he refused saying he thinks they are worthless and don't really cover anything (which I actually agree with him on that). I own a 22 Plaid and a 03 Jetta TDI Wagon. The ying vs Yang of vehicle ownership from an emissions perspective. 😅The early refreshed Model S (2021) did have some build quality issues which they eventually resolved with the newer ones. I’m pretty satisfied with my 2022 but I did have to resolve a couple creaks myself. For example, had to put tape on the rear seat latch hooks so they wouldn’t rattle when latched. Overall a great car and much cheaper to own/operate than the Panamera turbo I owned previously.
In the UK it's not quite that cut and dried, when you buy from dealer you're somewhat covered under fit for purpose legislation, even on second hand cars. You're expected to pay out of your own pocket for normal wear and tear expenses, but if you have things like engine failures you can go back to the dealer and demand repair or your money back. Most dealers provide at least 3 months warranty on a used car, but under fit for purpose legislation you're covered for at least six months, you can sometimes push it to a year on more expensive cars. Buying any used car outside of warranty is a gamble. I brought a 2015 gmc Yukon but I made sure to have warranty and thank God I did. A month after I got it it broke bad. Now the dealer told me the truck was in excellent shape. And according to my test drive it seem to be a deal. But it broke and cost the warranty 8,000. To date the warranty has spend 14000 on it. Best truck I’ve ever owned now 😂
I seen that fuse replaced before and there was an access panel for it under the car and the battery did not need to be removed. I don't remember the year of the Model S that had the access panel, but it was easy to replace.

Now I’ll tell you because I use to work at a Hyundai dealer years ago. Even putting a new engine in those cars, you may still have the same problem with knocking motor. Hyundai and Kia haven’t really fixed the issue they just give people a new engine just to keep from getting a lawsuit. The real fix is taking the motor to an engine shop and have them machine the bore down and add new pistons to it. Once they do that the issue is fixed you will not have a problem again. The issue is the piston on the 1.8 to 2.0 gdi getting premature failure and cause knocking. The 2.0 turbo and 2.4 gdi has issue with bearing clearance if you get a machine shop to fix those issues. You will not have no problems.

I also got that battery fuse warning on my 2017 model S, but in the later model it's a lot easier to fix. In my case it was done for free by Tesla. It seems to have been covered by the drivetrain warranty, although my general warranty is expired. I think this is a safety feature, because it is a pyrofuse controller that actually gets flagged by a timer in Tesla's software. The pyrofuse is there to prevent fires and voltage hazards in case of an accident. I think the NHTSA should force Tesla to cover this as safety critical equipment.
Thats funny how the older cheaper Tesla is in some ways better then the newer more expensive Plaid. I like both of them but the older one more, im a big red car fantastic, blue rolls in second (no pun). Hope you get the Tesla's bugs worked out smoothly & reasonably. Lookig forward to videos on all the cars new and oldies.
I’m not trying to defend Randy or Elon musk or Tesla. But if you have the ability to fix your own car good for you. But if you have got your car fixed in the last 2 years with a mechanic it’s always in the thousands even if you buy a Toyota or Honda they’re meant to break. My last repair was $2k!
I LOVE the 57'! Would love to see more videos on it. I would love to own one. You got super lucky with that. Imagine doing a Tesla Swap with the 57'. That would be insane! A 1957 Chevy Bel Aire Plaid Edition!

Love that Cadillac, such a cool car ,as I said before very similar to commodore series in Australia 🇦🇺 😀, keep up the excellent news on the Tesla's cheers
Hoping to see the Monte Carlo on the channel. My parents had one when I was growing up until the head gasket failed on it. Ended up selling to someone that fixed it up for their kids first car
If you do an oil change on the Kia don’t be worried if you see any metal flakes or sludge in the oil filter cap! It is actually normal believe it or not to see that upon the first oil change, the technician is supposed to clean the filter cap out with brake clean but not many people actually do that
An old employer of mine told me that you only honest once after a long time customer gave him a bad check and dodged paying him. Once they find out your not honest no one trusts you. I believe that if you were to buy a two year old Cadillac in perfect condition for $500 there would be list of people telling you that you were paying too much because they knew some on who bought the same car for $300. Wonderful and informative video as always. Thank you.
Not surprised about the cost of the taillight on that olds! My 94 Buick regal coupe Was $400 but it was the whole length of the car. Just a whole strip of lights across the back. And that was from the scrap yard not even new. Another car I loved 3.8l V6 blue with Crome wheels and blue swade Like interior.
It seems like if you are just buying these cars because you like them and are curious, the wholesale dealer deal is actually a disadvantage if you can't sell to the public. Also, regarding the motors on the older Teslas, there are some folks making coolant bypasses for these. Some debate exists as to whether that is a good idea or not. I would say on a lower performance Tesla, or another vehicle that uses a Tesla motor like the Rav 4 EVs of the early 2010s or a Mercedes B series EV (both used a Tesla motor), it's probably going to work fine. There's also outfits out there on UA-cam that "rebuild" the motors per se after the coolant ingress issues, the rebuild really involves disassembling the whole works and getting all the rust off the stator with a wire wheel, and replacing all the bearings in the drive reduction unit, while you are at it. You can find videos of this on UA-cam. Long term, the non-dealer EV repair industry is really just in it's infancy, but there are starting to be more places that do component level repairs on batteries and motors. A lot of times when EV batteries go bad it's just one module that needs to be replaced. That's a fraction of the price of a brand new battery.
On the black Tesla on the main screen on the car go into the settings > software … scroll all the way down to privacy, turn off all the analytics (in your case the one that is probably causing issues is share data while parked). Also under safety tab turn off sentry. That should get it to go to sleep.
When I buy a used car from a private party, I typically expect that it's going to need repairs to get it up to daily duty, but retail dealers recon cars before sale, so they should be on the hook for repairs within reason. Of course, it's at the discretion of the dealer if there isn't a warranty, just to keep their good name. It's usually easier for the dealer just to buy the car back if there's a major problem.
You left the best part out of the flying wheels situation out. The guy actually took the car to the Hyundai dealership to have the motor checked before it blew. The dealership told him the motor was fine. Then after that it blew. But that just proves right there that there’s no crystal ball that will tell the dealership the car is going to break. That guy is completely at fault. He didn’t pay retail. He wanted a deal on the car and refused everything that would’ve helped him. That’s his fault.
It's pretty hard to inspect the lower end without taking the oil pan off and pulling some rod caps. Spinning rod bearings is the most common failure mode. I have had 3 Hyun/Kia vehicles I bought new and the other thing is, I never ran the CAFE oils in them. 5w30 minimum, and in my direct injection Sonata I had, 10w30 only. 5000 mile changes max all with 10w30 full synthetic. Ran great with minimal oil consumption when I sold it with 95K, just got bored with it and wanted something else. I had another one, a Kia Rondo, I ran to 135K before giving it away, also no issues and no topping off necessary.
Pyro fuse is so much easier on the Model 3 and Y! and maybe the newer S and X. For Model 3/Y you just life up the second row seats (no tools) and then remove a metal panel (only need some ratchets), and it's right there
I put on average about 200-300 miles on our used inventory (I have about a 40 mile trip one way) and I still have issues with used cars. You can be as comprehensive as you want in your recon process but, used cars will do used car kinda things. Folks, take the warranty, this is why we offer them!
So would you want to buy a car with a warning on the dash needing repair? The repair may be cheap for me but perhaps the next owner isn't made of money. $700 was the cost to have it replaced and I covered it. You can't just assume everyone has $700 laying around.
If you were near me I would buy my car from you Randy. You have the honest mindset so many car dealerships are lacking severely. The customer in the story you told is in the wrong imo. In his case it's not the seller's fault. Just my thoughts.
Out of all of the new cars, I'm most interested in the Pontiac GTP that you might not be able to fix LOL... Of course the 57 is my absolute favorite out of any car you have owned., and I'm glad to see that at least for now, you are keeping it and making it more comfortable to drive with the A/C. If you ever sell the 57 I will either fly out and kick your ass, or buy the car. JK on the kicking your ass, but not so much on buying it. Seriously, that should be one car that you keep for a very long time, but I'm a little biased. It's a great car and you don't have very much money tied up in it, and you will never be able to buy another 57 that is that good for what you paid for it.
The biggest problem with Hyundai and Kia vehicles is the oil change mileage intervals they tell you it's OK for their cars and then their engines get sludge built up in them and they fail. They tried doing that with my father in law. He ended up getting a new engine from hyundai. This was on a 2016 hyundai Sonata Hybrid. Great car. Just over 100k n technically out of warranty. They still honored the 100k warranty because he had all work done at the dealer. Now we are getting the Car. 160k with a new transmission. Imma try the new Valvoline restore and protect oil in it. Get rid of all that sludge.
The Hyundai looks like it would make an excellent first car. I don't hold out a lot of hope for the white Metro. I look forward to seeing the videos on many of these new to you cars.
You are a stand up Guy I would not hesitate to buy a vehicle from you Cars are basically machines and all machines will break no matter the make and model
I follow Craig as well. I saw the video you are speaking of last night. I think that guy has a little agenda as well. Read the stickers in the background. I do not own a Tesla but just sold a bmw x550i spent 88k just in repairs mainly labor due to their computer issuing codes designed to separate the money from the customer. The last code pops up at 150,000 or 10 yrs must be cleared from bmw. The charge was 764 plus I was told it will need a new transfer case at 7500. They have not even been in the car yet. The code was for oil wear indicator in the transfer case. There is NO SUCH ITEM! To check the fluid truly, it needs to be sent to a lab. Sorry just sold it this week, the wound is fresh. Lol I like the video's keep it up
While owning 2 different Tesla Model S's, I loved the cars, but prices plummeted while I owned them. Your older S would have returned value better by parting it out then replacing the motor. The battery pack alone has value.
Older and used cars are always going to have small malfunctions after so many miles. At least you try to keep your cars intact before you leave them to the next person.
Good morning Randy. The Tesla Model S is broken again after spending $7000 to fix it. Now it's broken again. The 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid is a good looking car. Now you've got to replace the battery or the fuse. I don't know if you heard but there is a strike going on on the West Coast and the Gulf Coast. Transportation is going to be hard.

I sold a jeep renegade latitude. Then the transmission control module left the chat. I sold it after it went out. I replaced it i felt so bad. Randy the information I agree with you.
If any make of car has a weak motor then used motors will be expensive and will probably fail. Chances are a warranty is only going to do whatever is the cheapest.
There’s videos on YT with 500k on the odometer still running … not in perfect shape but they are capable of super high mileage as long as you take care of them
Like the frog nose on the EXP. Courier companies received many EXPs from Ford, they’d remove the front passenger seat and fill the interior with mail and parcels driving nearly 150,000 miles within the first year.
Randy, on the police suv. That same thing happens to me in my 2011 Shelby, my wife and I were on our way to a car show in Little Rock AR and truck pulling a trailer or crap was in front of me in the middle lane and he didn’t have anything strapped down. He hit a big bump on the interstate and slung chicks of wood across all 3 lanes and did major damage to my bumper. I was ticked because I only had that for like 6 months before that happened
The buyer has to accept responsibility for the fact that what they are buying is working appropriately before shelling out the money to purchase the product. The seller has to accept responsibility that what they are selling is working appropriately or disclose the problems with the product being sold.

I want the geo so bad. Dose not even need to be fixed up. I love that little egg.
With the costs of repairs alone on one tesla I could fill a yard with geo metros plus they don't come in manual.
glad I'm NOT making Elon richer by buying his wallet drainers
I’m not trying to defend Randy or Elon musk or Tesla. But if you have the ability to fix your own car good for you. But if you have got your car fixed in the last 2 years with a mechanic it’s always in the thousands even if you buy a Toyota or Honda they’re meant to break. My last repair was $2k!
seems like he has put a lot of planned 'obsolescence' into those things ,
we get the Chinese made ones ,so it's a big nooooooo from me
Glad I don't have a 70K truck built in Mexico.
I LOVE the 57'! Would love to see more videos on it. I would love to own one. You got super lucky with that. Imagine doing a Tesla Swap with the 57'. That would be insane! A 1957 Chevy Bel Aire Plaid Edition!
I love doing mechanical working. You got a lot of cars that I love the water gun and in my future. I've done some dabble in here on some of the cars, but you got a lot of cars that I used to work on like the view of the neon. I just loved doing mechanics. I love making cars run again. I love doing. The clean ups getting them all set up for peoi.Enjoy your videos keep up the good work
Love that Cadillac, such a cool car ,as I said before very similar to commodore series in Australia 🇦🇺 😀, keep up the excellent news on the Tesla's cheers
Good Morning There My Good Little Bro Randy Lee Shear Of Auto Action Rebuilds
Hoping to see the Monte Carlo on the channel. My parents had one when I was growing up until the head gasket failed on it. Ended up selling to someone that fixed it up for their kids first car
If you do an oil change on the Kia don’t be worried if you see any metal flakes or sludge in the oil filter cap! It is actually normal believe it or not to see that upon the first oil change, the technician is supposed to clean the filter cap out with brake clean but not many people actually do that
My guess was $700! 😂 The car just doesn't want to go away from you.
My 94 Buick regal coupe
Was $400 but it was the whole length of the car.
Just a whole strip of lights across the back.
And that was from the scrap yard not even new.
Another car I loved 3.8l
V6 blue with Crome wheels and blue swade
Like interior.
For Model 3/Y you just life up the second row seats (no tools) and then remove a metal panel (only need some ratchets), and it's right there
Newer Model S is very easy as well
I put on average about 200-300 miles on our used inventory (I have about a 40 mile trip one way) and I still have issues with used cars. You can be as comprehensive as you want in your recon process but, used cars will do used car kinda things. Folks, take the warranty, this is why we offer them!
Awesome car collection. I am really interested in your future videos on your new Tesla. Cool channel.
First, it's not an error but a warning (see the icon). 2nd it doesn't cost a lot to replace. 3rd only the first gens have type of fuse.
So would you want to buy a car with a warning on the dash needing repair? The repair may be cheap for me but perhaps the next owner isn't made of money. $700 was the cost to have it replaced and I covered it. You can't just assume everyone has $700 laying around.
thank you through you we are learning not to mess with Teslas
I had the same problem with my Tesla. Thank you for your video that information let me know what the problem was. 👍
If you were near me I would buy my car from you Randy. You have the honest mindset so many car dealerships are lacking severely.
The customer in the story you told is in the wrong imo. In his case it's not the seller's fault. Just my thoughts.
You could reset the fuse via Toolbox. But replacing is a good thing to do.
Randy made a video about slowing down instead he speeding up and buying more vehicles than he can handle.
If I couldn’t handle it I wouldn’t buy them.
Good video, the dealer was right😊
Out of all of the new cars, I'm most interested in the Pontiac GTP that you might not be able to fix LOL...
Of course the 57 is my absolute favorite out of any car you have owned., and I'm glad to see that
at least for now, you are keeping it and making it more comfortable to drive with the A/C.
If you ever sell the 57 I will either fly out and kick your ass, or buy the car. JK on the kicking your ass,
but not so much on buying it. Seriously, that should be one car that you keep for a very long time,
but I'm a little biased. It's a great car and you don't have very much money tied up in it,
and you will never be able to buy another 57 that is that good for what you paid for it.
Used or new corolla camry and youre set 20+ years
Unless you want to put a dog into trunk
@darekmistrz4364 the corolla hatchback or they fit in the back seat
@@Jaylikescar Corolla and Camry are substantially different cars
@@darekmistrz4364 Corolla cross and ? They both last
The Hyundai looks like it would make an excellent first car. I don't hold out a lot of hope for the white Metro. I look forward to seeing the videos on many of these new to you cars.
Love all the cars. The 57 still one of my favs, great buy still.
Watching your problems with those crappy Tesla and burst fires after the flooding here in FL will keep me from getting one .Ty
You are a stand up Guy I would not hesitate to buy a vehicle from you
Cars are basically machines and all machines will break no matter the make and model
Since your is on the top.. one issue these model S have is that the AC drains on top of the battery. Which then it will leak into the battery
The venue would be great for Nick! Nice econbox that's also safe.
Love that Pontiac Grandprix. Thanks for another great video Randy
I am not in the business of parting out cars. I save them.
Guy was trying to get Craig to pay for his stupidity. Social media blackmail, a wonderful new development.
Dude I'm definitely looking forward to your upcoming videos on these cars, especially the grand prix, cavalier, skylark, and the dynasty
The GEO Metro convertible she is worth fixing, running and cleaned up.😊👍❤️ I would pay $400 for her if cleaned up and shipping..😊❤️
Still have not learned yet
This is why I watch you Randy good vids love the variety I love my jalapys. Please don’t retire or slow down. I love the vids! Also I’d be stoked if my pops gave me a newer Hyundai! Also wow you bought that Kia sportage I didn’t think you’d buy newer!
kinda weird but the 57and the plaid are my 2 favorite, would probably choose the 57 when it gets air though.....
Keep up the good work 👏
Thanks, will do!
Randy Kia has a extend warranty for some of the engine.
There’s videos on YT with 500k on the odometer still running … not in perfect shape but they are capable of super high mileage as long as you take care of them
Hey Randy I love the look of that Grand Prix looking forward to that video
Love the Belair it’s gorgeous.👍👍
I value the information you’ve provided.
Those Model 3 and Y's are much more mass produced so prices will be much cheaper and I imagine easier to fix.
My Grandpa Used to Own an 1990 Oldsmobile Omega 4 Door All Original interior and still to this date i see that car driving around town they Where great cars back in the Day
I saw that video regarding the Hyundai Randy and that guys is a fool. He knew it was an unreliable vehicle and he bought it AS-IS and was told multiple times it was an AS-IS sale. I think it's on the owner on that one!
That Hyundai Venue is perfect for Nick.👍
I drive 100 miles a day, but i live in BFE Pennsylvania, the charging infrastructure isnt here and i rent, i like the thought of less maintenance of an EV but its not for me
I like the Geo and the 57 Chevy....... I took my driving test in 1973 in my Mom's 57 Chevy so the 57 remains a fond memory of mine..... Oh yeah I am a woman 68 years old
Love the EXP and Geo.
I like the 57 Belair videos. I like all of them that you work on.in your shop and in front of AAR HQ
