Slowly and steadily working my way through this. This is the first time learning something that isn't only chords and I'm almost through part one. I'm a little proud of myself as it feels like a huge step up for me! Great video and super easy to follow, thank you!
We've go to stop meeting like this...no matter what song I choose to learn it always seems to be Carl teaching me it 😄 dude needs to be inducted into the rock hall of fame for the sheer amount of free content he's provided lol
I've been flat picking this song for years. I just try to imagine how Guitar George would play it and add Mick Taylor style single note lines. Everybody loves it.
Guitar George knows all the chords. but doesn't like to make them cry or sing. Respect to Guitar George's conviction of being a straight forward rhythm player. completely fictional or not.
ac dc nay, friend. Guitar George is George Thorogood, who as we all know never got real fancy or bent any notes for effects in his melodic ballad “Bad to the Bone”. Harry is Harry Chapin. It was rumored that his song “Cat’s in the Cradle” had such an impact on his own mode of thinking that he quit touring so that he would never miss another moment of his son’s life. He never actually had children, but wanted to play it safe in case he ever did. Food for thought...
I am a beginner. This is a song I always wanted to play. Way beyond my potential. I have stuck with it because this is so well taught. I can now play from beginning to end. It took me more than a year. I am back so I can learn the vibrato etc. You are such a good teacher . I could not have done this without you. Fabulous! Just the best.
Chris Birch Mark have numbers of different versions. He keep the flavour of the song. I think it’s great when you can play note for note, but I think it’s even better when you can improvise and still keep the flavour of the song. That’s where the fun is at. That’s only my take if this. Play and have fun.
Dire Straights is one of those bands I slept on as a kid in the 80s (i did like money for nothin though). I started listening to them many years later and realized how great they are (esp Knopler). This is one of my favorites.
Hey, Really like your lesson. You play well, explain well and move along at the right pace. Like so many guitarists, I marvel at what Knopfler did on Sultans of Swing. You have made it possible for others to play it.
Hi Rob - I can now play all the song except the final solo ... I am still working on that. It takes me a while because my memory is not as good as it used to be. I can get a piece 'down' one day and lose some of it the next day ... so I have to keep going over the earlier parts until it 'sticks' ... this takes time, and only repetition, repetition, repetition works. I am hoping to be performing this song in the New Year with my trio .... learning this has deepened my respect for Mark Knoffler ... his playing is so 'tasty' ...where were tutorials like this when I was learning to play back in the 50's ? .... oh ... I forgot ... computers, you tube and the internet hadn't been invented than ... there goes my memory again ... what good tutorials - thanks again ...
I just started it... Today, it was on the radio, and mum said she really likes this one. I bet her £10 That I'll learn it until September, so here I am! 😂
This is an amazing teaching video! I am finally going to stick with this video and learn it from start to end. Thank you for teaching it in a way that makes it easy to learn.
So far this is the only video with finger picking. A huge component of this song and Knopfler's sound. Thanks for doing this classic piece justice and respecting the artist.
Thank you so much for these videos, I used to struggle to learn songs until I discovered your channel, I recently used this song for a solo piece I had to perform to pass music. I performed three songs, Sultans of Swing, Dream on, and Blackbird, all of which I learned from your channel, Thankyouuuu
So simple yet so complex riffs. Just with the proper finger positions as shown, I will get through this. The melody is already in my head. Love how you teach this song.
I have only been playing for about 6 months and my teacher has me playing this song ... the way you did this helped immensely .... keep up the great work !!!
I learned this song when I was in highschool taking lessons, my teacher transcribed it for me. Its a great song for people learning who like lead guitar i think because you learn a lot of the elements to lead. It gets harder as the song goes on as I remember. Im just trying to relearn guitar now as an adult. Thank you!
hey Carl you have completely blown me away with these tutorials on this song. this is my second favorite song of all time my friend. thx to Andre from Your guitar workshop he was the one who informed me that you had posted this.. i have caught your lesson on Hotel california but not this one. thank you i trully want to say that we do appreciate what you and the other tutors are doing for us.. i hope you don't mind me loading all of your lesson onto a thumb stick for my own personal use. Thx for sharing your talents with the rest of us. Love this lead guitar and it's always been on my "bucket list" and now I can actually envision me playing this in the not too distant future.
Great tutorial, never thought I'd be able to play this. really need toplay along with the radio or a CD but for the most part, it's riffs and chords that are pretty easy to form. Includes had the impression that these were going to be some ridiculous jazz style chords with fingers all over the place, lol. Thanks again for posting this and many others.
Man!! This is all I needed to complete this song! So many tasty little fills that I couldn't get just right. Some of Knopfler's accents are kinda tricky. Thank you so much! Great tutorial!!
Hey, your videos are so informative and easy to follow. I learnt recueredos from you in like 3 days. It was amazing. Looking forward to learning this. Thanks for making these videos, they really are fantastic!
Hi, just wanted to say thank you very much for all your work, it's really amazing ! I'm really getting better with your lessons, so thanks and i hope you the best have a nice days !
on the first fill you do the run on the D string 5-7 and then 7 on the G, when you play the next bit you play 7th fret on the D and then you grab the F at the 10th fret of the G before resolving on the C# at 7 G. I always grab that F on the 6th fret on the B string as it is in the next rake you have to do (G7-B6-E5). That way my middle and ring fingers are already on the notes for the rake, just have to put down my index finger on E5. Just find it a little easier than having to reach up for the 10th fret when everything else is on 5 & 7. Other than that nicely done.
Hi Carl. Really nice that you're doing these lessons learned a lot from you! I wonder if you're willing to make a tutorial of Dire Straits - Expresso love. Its a really nice song and not too hard to master I geuss. I personally struggle with the solo. Thx and great work!
Great video, learning fast. Would it be possible to maybe have a link to a video of the song and then have the time that you're covering in the top right maybe? Like you're doing this and this lick at 1:35 etc?
Try starting with just the thumb and index, your greatest control digits. I learned a couple of songs in the day like that and then went to Black Bird, 3 fingers. then Your song by yes that works nice with a 4 finger on electric guitar. For some reason ik’ve been intimidated by this song for that reason and when you mention it I remember that it;s a lot simpler than you think. Hey Carl, I know you are currently updating some old lessons - this would be a great lesson to redo.
7 years later I find this great video of yours. Dynamite teacher man. How much I appreciate this is beyond words. Thank you.

4:56 Most important part of the lesson
I'm sure Mark Knopler never played it the same way twice live.
exactly my point as well, he never actually did

No two instructors teach it the same way either, or even have the same notes played.
