7 years later this man has 1 million views on a 19 year old game at the time of writing. Literally a quarter century later this video on the Japanese civil is being watched. What a legend
This might be a bit late, but that the Samurai don't get a bonus versus Turtle Ships even though they are unique units is pretty funny from an historical standpoint. One of the big reasons why the Koreans designed the Turtle Ships the way they did was to prevent boarding actions from the Japanese navy, which was the latters favorite way of naval warfare. They just put a bunch of Samurai and/or Ashigaru on a ship, jumped on enemy vessels and fought it out man versus man. I guess that means that Turtle Ships being Samurai resistant is historically accurate...
Love from me... Thank you very much... 😊😊😊😊😊 You learn new things everyday and the best part... Knowledge can be found and stumble anywhere... In this case... I just stumble upon this comment for knowledge...
It would be so great if we could automatically queue fish traps like we can with farms. Even if it required a whole new building, I'd probably build it more often than not just for convenience.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooo my beloved super OP Japanese towers are getting rightfully nerfed! They were OP because massed towers spammed enough arrows to kill battering rams, without even needing units to go after them.
Dude I have never played this game but accidentally watch one of your videos one day and got hooked. I've watched over 10 videos and I have to say props bro. You have a excellent way of explaining things without being too over the top but gets in depth about it and your passion shows. Keep it up!

WELL DONE SIR SpiritOfTheLaw, well done. I would knight you, but I don't even think you need the extra hp and damage to achieve greatness. :)
Hi Spirit Of The Law, Something you might want to consider adding in the future; One of the large advantages of the Huns house bonus is that you don't have to use villager seconds building the houses. This makes the Hun house bonus significantly better than it looks on paper and a stronger bonus then you are giving it credit for when compared to the Japanese camp and mill bonus ( or any other bonus for that matter).
i would LOVE to see some more gameplay from you, either like a playthrough of the campaign or just online/bot games! Definitly the best AOE youtuber ive seen! benched watched a ton of your videos when i found you and i had no idea you could play this game this competative!
It's always interesting to see how game developers interpret various civilisations in gameplay terms. I don't know much japanese history, but I do know the Samurai have an interesting history. They started out as mounted archers more so than anything else, but somehow this progressed through to being more typical cavalry, and then finally the samurai we're more familiar with nowadays...
In the later period, samurai had essentially been relegated to an intellectual class. The whole idea of Bushido is to balance both intellectual and martial pursuits, but after the Sengoku Jidai, there wasn't enough war around to keep them in the martial role, and so they stopped doing that outside of ceremony.
I am a gigantic fan of that fishing ship bonus. It makes Japanese on Black Forest a very viable option for me so long as I can grab at least one pond. The Fishing Ships aren't going to get taken down by enemy ships, and it's a good use of the otherwise empty water space. It's also much smaller than farms, which has a number of minor benefits. I remember a time when I had every pond on a BF map. I had all my villagers on wood while keeping my fishing ships busy. I was able to halberdier-spam like crazy with next to no economic repercussions. I do end up mashing that idle villager key, though, but I find that makes the late game more interesting. Just because you touched on heroes, I think an analysis of them would be really interesting to see, sometime. Some of them have some really funny attributes. Attila the Hun, for example, I've found seems to be considered an infantry unit. Pikes don't do extra damage to him, but he takes a ton from Jaguar Warriors and Cataphracts. Kind of ironic, seeing at the model used IS a Cataphract! Take your time, though. I really look forward to seeing you redo the old reviews you did!
I don't even play this game anymore (since it came out years ago) but I like your videos. Keep up the great work. I'd love to watch videos of you analyze things outside of Age of Empires! Maybe actual civilizations ;)
daddyleon like villagers. It was removed because switching between sword and bow was too impractical in testing. "to see the Samurai accidentally having been ordered to attack with a Bow instead of his sword was deemed too much."
Would have been more historically accurate, as samurai were trained as archers as well as swords men. However The samurai class was technically a cavalry unit, and would have started battle with a spear instead of a katana, which was primarily a back up weapon.
The Japanese getting bloodlines might be a historical reference to the fact that Samurai were often mounted, using either melee weapons or bows. With "Samurai" as the unique unit, knights with bloodlines to facilitate a strong early cavalry rush, and cavalry archers you have all of those roles covered.
Dear Spirt,I hope you are reading this because you have really changed my life.I used to be a B student and when I would come home after school,I would always play vs the easiest AI.then I found your Chanel.the way you mixed math and the game help to inspire me to become an A+ student. Also I stated playing online as a 1000 player and got all the way up to 1800 in 9 months because of your videos.Thank you.
The Japanese is also my preferred and favorite to play, but I am only a beginner who can’t even beat a hard ( close though). I have 178 hrs of gameplay only as well and if you can I would like to make a request that you make a “ how to rush tutorial for beginners” since you would be my preferred UA-camr Aoe2 expert. Thanks as well for the help I have found in your videos as a beginner.
Underrated civ right here. I do love my naval assaults. On island/archipelago maps I tend to build castles keeps and docks on the small Islands to help support my attack force.
I'd love to see some of these older Civ reviews get redone after some time and updates, plus new civs to compare to - but I know how much time goes into the research let alone putting the visuals together in a video
Oh, and also, I loved your jokes there. Fish & Chips (top quality indeed!) the Samurai asking for an Oscar like DiCaprio. Lastly, you said at 16:02... "The Huskarl has gained its place as a really UNIQUE infantry". The Expansion-Courier-Powered Incan Elite Eagle Warriors disagree with this xD
I think you should add back in the Rams all speeding along back to the intro. It is an impressive sight to see how far you have been willing to go to test things.
I know that Japanese were definitely a priority for redoing civ overviews but are you going to do the African Kingdoms before the redos or vice versa. Great video!
I was thinking about alternating back and forth. All the African Kingdom ones in a row would be a long stretch for people who don't play the expansions at all.
As a long time viewer i dont agree. i dont play the game much anymore and watching new stuff is always more exciting then revamped. i will still watch and support you no matter what but imo you should make all the african "tribes" first. :-) Keep doing what you do best!
I would like you to wait until patch 4.8 is officially out live for everybody (in the finalstage), thanks it affects the Expansion Civs the most - so you dont need to re-do the overview, like with the Indians for example :-).
I imagine he'll only remake the videos up to the Britons since he had a different video format before that one. I'm all for remakes of those, but I'm ok with him doing African Kingdoms civs earlier, maybe in-between.
Japanese are my favourite, I play them 95% of the time. They have infantry, good cav archers and arbalests/skirmishers, and even cavaliers aren't absolutely useless. Their cavarly doesn't have plate barding armor and Paladin/Hussar upgrade, which is not that much. There are civs which have worse cavalry than the Japanese have. However, I usually rush on samurai instead of knights.
That faster treb packing/firing is great because it means you don't have to build/attack with as many trebs or you can split trebs into groups to take on multiple objectives.
I love love love your intro music and video compilation. Your channel reminded me how much i miss age of empires. I need to get the newer one cuz my old disks dont work now :(

Finally!! Awesome video! It's a shame they nerfed Japanese Towers... You said Japaneses are a lot more popular now than 2 years ago when you made your first review. Maybe it's thanks to you!!
Man, that elephant archer moon-walked in front of your whole line of onagers. What do we think of the Vikings' Chieftains tech's effecting all infantry in the coming patch? Although I always wished that Vikings had Halberdiers (as your review notes, most everything about Vikings falls off in the Imperial Age), I think that this buff will make their pikemen much more competitive, considering their HP bonus.
Loved the video man! Glad to see this remade. What civ are you thinking of doing next? I'd be really excited to see the malians looked over, but I'm assuming they are a bit later on your bucket list.
Spirit Of The Law Sounds good! That was another one I was interested in, mainly the organ guns. Basically gunpowder scorpions that get made from a castle and get ballistics. Super strong if you make a castle quickly, as they take on pretty much any non unique unit besides knights easily, and they can outrange town centers from the get go. Talk about a power spike. The gold discount is super powerful too.
Japanese were great to rush with in the old days, no need to worry about late game economy if you keep your opponents from ever going imp. That 50% cheaper lumber/mining camp bonus is awesome if used smart & hide extra camps far away from your 1st TC, mooching other side's resources. Also, 3 sams will pwn a war elephant because that unique unit atk bonus but still be better against other units than a halberd. And as the video explained, sams pwn huskarls hands down.
Random story: In my high school computer center(basically a section of the library where everyone doing online/telecom classes), we played AOE2 one time only. I brought in a bootleg and we did a 8 person free for all. Sure enough 5/8 players got together and made a unofficial truce and walled off half the map, not realizing they trapped a couple of my villagers in it since my Barry bushes were far away. I didn't tell them, and proceeded to put two castles in the corner of the map, and I spammed petards and samari to the point where I amassed 50 samari and 30 petards. I proceeded to send them all into their town centers, and most of them didn't spend time making a lot of barracks, ranges, etc and only had one or two and got absolutely gutted in 5 minutes. The one player who bothered to make a barracks had champions but couldn't keep up with the samari and how fast they came and fell after a couple minutes. They all raged quit and we never proceeded to play it again
The economy tech in orignal game conquer game in Japanese is similar to Dravidian eco tech tree. See the tech tree. SOTL you missed to grade the Dravidian eco tech tree
SOTL stopped grading the eco tech tree in recent overviews. He said the eco is already covered in the other segments of the overview. I don't remenber in which overview was it, though.

Season three, starting off with a remake, seems about right :)
I really like.
8:17 "But to quickly SAMURAISE" I see what you did there :P
Random story:
In my high school computer center(basically a section of the library where everyone doing online/telecom classes), we played AOE2 one time only.
Wow, I must have watched this video over 10 times, and only now got the "where's my oscar" reference
Thanks for redoing this one!
Have to get back into this game, albeit more seriously. Japanese my favourite faction as well, I like their flexibility
