Wunderbar
There's something extraordinary with Hannes and this orchestra in Concertgebouw, just incredible.
One of the more unique recordings of this I've ever heard
Brahms' two piano concertos. If the first was the work of a young musician bubbling with ideas, seeking a balance between respect for classical tradition and romantic innovation, the second on the other hand fits into the scores of maturity. This opus is also one of the largest in the repertoire. Finally, the score leaves little room for spectacular outpourings, which is experienced as frustrating by certain performers of the time because the technique on the other hand calls for considerable pianistic resources. The concerto opens with a deceptively calm Allegro non troppo. The theme develops on the horn, then on the small harmony and the strings. He offers the piano its unique cadence before the orchestra reveals all its power. The dramatic tension continues to grow until it reaches a peak of intensity which displays the impressive technique of the soloist. The finesse of the writing is equally remarkable in the following movement, a scherzo Allegro appassionato. Romantic violence and impetuosity are concentrated in the first theme, in opposition to the second, the song of which is almost plaintive. The second theme is more distressed and complaining in nature. The appearance of the scherzo, capricious and playful, ends with the victorious return of the fiery first theme. The Andante begins in an atmosphere that makes us forget the dynamism of the two previous movements. The dialogue with the cello suggests more of a piece of chamber music subtly decorated by the piano. It will sometimes take the form of a double concerto. The finale, Allegretto grazioso, is reminiscent of some rondo composed on a theme of almost naive inspiration. The piano is accompanied only by the violas. Here again, the chamber spirit imposes itself on the great concert form. This theme slides towards a second idea, with both a Gypsy and Hungarian flavor, like a lyrical necessity of the piano and the orchestra in order to favor this spirit in this passage. The fluidity and fluency of the speech was preserved. The beauty of music is revealed only to those who can understand it. *Lucien*

00:00 Allegro non troppo
18:10 Allegro appassionato

38:40 Allegretto grazioso
A symphony with piano obbligato 🙂
it's a great lie, Brahms to knows that he write when compose this big piece.
Why do some people think they must crush and hammer the instrument? Poor Brahms!
