"The opening scene where Clopin sings 'The Bells of Notre Dame' was supposed to be all-spoken. After two revisions, the staff thought it was so dull and so boring, they decided to live it up and by making it into a musical number." BEST. DECISION. EVER!
Frollo, next to Lady Tremaine, is my absolute favorite non-magical Disney villain. His character is so grotesque, demented, and evil without the hocus pocus.
"Hunchback of Notre Dame" has a very special place in my heart because it is so dark, and it treated its audience like adults. To this day, Quasimodo is one of my favorite characters, and his story, though different in the book, still is a beautifully haunting one.
6:29 It's also worth noting that Deja refused to animate Hades because he didn't want to repeat himself by animating another villain after Gaston, Jafar and Scar.
i love when they decide to give voices to characters that shouldn't talk but yet in something like Pocahontas where a freaking tree talks and making the animals talk would make sense they decide no with Disney and I love hunchback but hate hate hate the gargoyles especially when its shown they are not a figment of imagination but instead real
Hunchback of Notre Dame was my favorite movie of all time, or at least became my most favorite after seeing it as an older teen. I did see it growing up when I was little, but, there were parts in the film that I didn't understand, like "Hellfire", I had NO clue what was going on, but I knew that some serious shit was going down. Now watching it as my older self, I just fell in love with it! I loved the music; I loved the story and the characters; I fell in love Notre Dame Cathedral itself!
There is a street in Lyon, France called "Rue Victor Hugo". I have been on it and it is a pedestrian street. Leads straight to Perrache station. I know a lot about Lyon. I lived there fr a year.
@ElectricDragon505 Pocahontas had some problems because some Native American tribes felt that it was not an accurate portrayal of the Powhatan princess so in the sequel's credits, Disney told its audience to go to the library to study and learn more about the Powhatan tribe.
I actually loved it! Granted I watched it as an adult, As a child I would have probably been bored. I'm also a history nut and loved the idea of Disney basing something (albeit loosely) on historical fact.
I agree. I also like how it's not full of all that lovey dovey fairy tale princess crap we're used to from Disney. Having all the adult themes in there makes it one of the best to me.
@MrAndrewsaccount92 Certain aspects were; castles, tournaments, the squire-knight relationship. Those elements just weren't expressed very well. And Sir Kaye WAS one of Arthur's knights according to legend. He used to be a real badass in the original Celtic legends, but when the French and English took over he became kind of a weaselly coward.
(continued) films were unfortunately very difficult for me to rely on as (moral) teaching tools despite growing up with them. Most of the time I relied on Sesame Street as a teaching tool, probably because I already knew it was original intention. I first found that out when I noticed laments about the tween-oriented direction the company seemed to have taken over the past several years that I luckily didn't pay much attention to, and it made me recall being regretfully POed over my mom singing
(continued) Hakuna Matata to me as a lullaby once. When she explained to me, I guess she was unaware that I didn't end up treating Disney films like moral teaching tools. As for Pocahontas, I ended up wondering if the huge success of An American Tail back when Disney was in the dumps somehow inspired them to make that due to them being based off historic details like Bluth did when he decided to make a film based off of a Hans Christian Andersen tale because the first big success of the Disney
(continued) Renaissance happened to be based off of a Hans Christian Andersen tale. I started wondering that since the Nostalgia Chick pointed out her "inverse proportion" theory in her Thumbelina review.
Since he mentioned that Hunchback of Notre Dame was directed by Beauty and the Beast directors Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, I wonder if that can easily explain why it was obviously another attempt to execute the inner beauty aesop, especially since I was verbally reprimaned for being shallow towards disabled people I was exposed to in those groups I was shoved into because of my Asperger Syndrome diagnosis since I was regretfully grossed out by their homely appearances. Unfortunately, Disney
I'm in utter shock with Hunchback being rated G, my mom wouldn't let my sisters and I watch until maybe about a year ago when I finally found it on Disney channel. It's amazing, the music is incredible but it is one of the darkest Disney movies I have ever seen. And I'm still getting over the fact that Black Cauldron took 12 years to make!! Holy crap!
Who said that "If I Never Knew You" was BORING?!?!?!?!?! That song is one of my favorites. It was great in the movie and amazing in the end credits version.
Sorry dude, I can't put it on the following parts. I would have to do the writing, recording, etc. and I'm too busy editing these parts. I am, however, gonna release a review of that film soon. So I guess I'll do The Princess and the Frog sepeately, like when I'm done doing this.
Yeah. HoND is my favorite Disney movie and has been since I was about 8 or 9. Even back then I was surprised about it's rating XD I mean, Frollo grabbing Esmeralda from behind and sniffing her hair and whatnot... You know, for kids!
Okay I think its great what your doing here. these videos are great but in the previous video you credited Glenn Keane for doing the Genie in Aladin. Although he is a great animator and he may have done some work on the character. The character was casted to acclaimed animator Eric Goldberg, who also directed Pocahantas.
If I may, I think you should have mentioned that the characters in Hercules were designed by Gerald Scarfe, the same guy who animated all the animated scenes in Pink Floyd's The Wall.
Hey ElectricDragon505, Did you know the people who were working on the film decided there should be 2 animals so they had to drop meeko, until the crew realized the turkey wasn't working, so they decided to bring back meeko and remove the turkey out of the entire film.
Hercules is one of my favorites of the Disney films released in the 90s(followed by Tarzan) and I really wish Disney would give it a special edition release. I remember watching that parade on tv and one of my relatives was actually there to see it. Can you tell Disney plays a HUGE part in my life in one way or another? Hehehe. :D
@HinataChick38 Ah, I can see why both of us seem to fall on the same page. I must've felt like a hygienic neat freak when I shamefully uttered my remark. Then again, it really does pay to be sharply chastised, but I'm glad it didn't happen by having to be turned into a beast!
that's why they had the sequel - to straight the facts right. You should check it out, they had Thomas Rolfe on Pocahontas II: Journey to the New World.
I saw the ABC version of Pocahontas and fell in love with the song If I Never Knew You. This past month though, I got the DVD set with the first and second movie only to find out that the song wasn't even in the bonus features. What a let-down. :/
Well, apparently, there might have been another been another reason why Pocahontas didn't do as well as Disney expected. Has anyone watched Nostalgia Critic's Disneycember series? He pointed out that part of the reason it might not have done as well as expected was because most kids and adults didn't find the retelling of her story to not be that interesting. But yes, the adult tones thing is certainly a factor as well.
Hercules was the very first movie I ever saw in Theatres. I used to not think Hades was a Villain. I remember when I was in 3rd Grade, a Classroom use to always watch Pocahontas, almost everyday :/
Pocahontas. They were hoping for it to be nominated for best picture, well Avatar kind of had the same story so it kind of it get nominated 14 years later. The Hunchback of Notre Dame. I love that movie, and Esmeralda is favorite Disney girl of all time. Hercules. I think making Hades a fast talker made him more unique.
While Hades and Zeus are brothers, I'm not sure if Hades would qualify as Hercules' uncle. He never talks to Hercules like an uncle, is never talked about like an uncle, and just about everybody on Mount Olympus is either Zeus's sibling or descendant.
Pocahontas is still my favorite movie. I watch whenever possible. You were wrong saying only 3 actors continued to do Pocahontas projects. David Ogden Stiers, who voiced Governor Ratcliffe and Wigeons, continued on to the Animated sequel. He's my favorite actor ever and a good friend so I'm slightly hurt LOL. In fact you haven't mentioned him in any movies he is in. Why?
i have to say pocahontas isn't one of my all time favourite disneys although i do adore them all but it is the only one that i can quote word for word.
DAMN!!! Part 8 is missing...I think my favourite movie EVER Beauty and the Beast was supposed to appear in that part :'( can you re-upload it? I really want to hear about the background of that movie :)
OMG! I love Hunchback of Notre Dame so much! I would have loved to see it in the Super Dome in New Orleans. XD One thing confuses me though; For about 4 or 5 years, I was under the impression that Micheal Eisner hated HoND but now I hear that it was his favorite. So, did he like reject it or was their another person with the same last name who hated the film or... I dunno, what? Any Disney whizzes here who can help me solve this mystery?
This guy and the Nostalgia Critic both fail to mention that there was also a 'Duck Tales' movie that came out in theaters in 1990. Does that movie not count?
I heard that John Candy died of an obesity-related illness, which must've been what caused so-called "health freaks" to start breathing down our necks sometime in the mid 2000s. Luckily I have been losing some weight recently thanks to a Weight Watchers program I enrolled in last month.
Hunchback of Notre Dame is one of my favorite Disney movies ever.
"The opening scene where Clopin sings 'The Bells of Notre Dame' was supposed to be all-spoken. After two revisions, the staff thought it was so dull and so boring, they decided to live it up and by making it into a musical number."
BEST. DECISION. EVER!
I agree! The singing was fantastic
To their credit the final scene was awesome and the singing was superb
Hunchback of Notre Dame is my favourite Disney film. I love the dark tones and songs. 😊🎥
1:09 No way, Cristen Bale, as in Batman Cristine Bale, voiced Thomas!!? wicked!!
He was young.
Christian* and did you also know that he was in the movie of Newsies back in the early 90s
Hunchback best disney movie EVER! Love it. Perfect. 4 stars!

Hunchback is my favourite Disney film period, Hercules being my 2nd and Mulan my 3rd

7:57 i don't see pumbaa
LOLLOLLOLLOL! I LOVE WHEN THE FAT GUY SAYS DAM!
I like it too
HungerGames Fangirl He isn't fat! He's FLUFFY!
TheSonicfan129 lol
notice that Gerald Scarfe who worked on graphics for Pink Floyd was the production designer on Disney's Hercules!
"Hercules" is one of my all-time favorite Disney movies
well its not my favourite
i love when they decide to give voices to characters that shouldn't talk but yet in something like Pocahontas where a freaking tree talks and making the animals talk would make sense they decide no with Disney
and I love hunchback but hate hate hate the gargoyles especially when its shown they are not a figment of imagination but instead real
HieiTheFox Thats a mouthfull
lol most of the time I'm like Blur from transformers
Haha!
HieiTheFox I think Mother Willow was supposed to be a representation of her being in touch with nature, not actually coming to life
i understand that but if she is in touch with nature an can talk to a tree it would make sense for the animals to talk as well
Hunchback of Notre Dame was my favorite movie of all time, or at least became my most favorite after seeing it as an older teen. Animat I love your "Animation Lookback" so this is like the 100th time i watched this part. Really no kidding. :D
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST?? HELLO!
One of the best Disney films ever!!!
LION KING is the BEST Disney movie!!!
HERCULES is my go to fun movie to watch.
And i use to watch mulan five or six times a day.
same the artwork is amazing the story is awesome frollo rocks and the songs kickass!
2 things: 1, the "Warning Call" song I heard it on the DVD release; 2, Matt should definitely do a evolution of Walter Lantz.
There is a street in Lyon, France called "Rue Victor Hugo". I have been on it and it is a pedestrian street. Leads straight to Perrache station. I know a lot about Lyon. I lived there fr a year.
4:20 what was that?
@ElectricDragon505 Pocahontas had some problems because some Native American tribes felt that it was not an accurate portrayal of the Powhatan princess so in the sequel's credits, Disney told its audience to go to the library to study and learn more about the Powhatan tribe.
Hercules will always be my 2nd favorite disney movie ever
What's your first
ALADDIN BABY LOL
I actually loved it! Granted I watched it as an adult, As a child I would have probably been bored. I'm also a history nut and loved the idea of Disney basing something (albeit loosely) on historical fact.

HOLY CRAP, CHRISTIAN BALE WAS IN POCAHONTAS! That makes that film friggen awesome!
Zazu was right; Scar WOULD make a nice throw rug! XD
I loved The Hunchback of Notre Dame!! I actually did a review on it!

The hunchback has scared me for life
John Red K Wicki haha
Hey at least it isn’t the old live action films
Ok. Show of hands. Who had to re-watch the whole episode because they were singing along to songs in the background?

Who said that "If I Never Knew You" was BORING?!?!?!?!?! That song is one of my favorites. It was great in the movie and amazing in the end credits version.
u should make some more trivia on live action disney films..good job btw!
Sorry dude, I can't put it on the following parts. I would have to do the writing, recording, etc. and I'm too busy editing these parts. I am, however, gonna release a review of that film soon. So I guess I'll do The Princess and the Frog sepeately, like when I'm done doing this.
@symbiote102 Because it was made by Pixar, not Walt Disney Animation Studios.
Yeah. HoND is my favorite Disney movie and has been since I was about 8 or 9. Even back then I was surprised about it's rating XD I mean, Frollo grabbing Esmeralda from behind and sniffing her hair and whatnot...
You know, for kids!
Lol love the end😊
Animation Lookback: Walt Disney Animation Studios part 9 is so cool and I love hunchback of Norte dame
I remember when i was young when i will watch brerty and the best 5 times a day in a yellow dress on my VCS good times
This was my era of Disney movies :D
The Hunchback Of Notre Dame is very mature, even for a Disney film in the 90s.
DAYUM! is at 4:20

James Woods is the perfect Hades. He likes playing a great villain. Especially when he plays himself on Family Guy.
my 3 faviroute disney movies
Hey ElectricDragon505, Did you know the people who were working on the film decided there should be 2 animals so they had to drop meeko, until the crew realized the turkey wasn't working, so they decided to bring back meeko and remove the turkey out of the entire film.
Hunchback of notre dame is my favorite disney movie!:D
2:58 My favorite Disney movie!!! 😆
Just out of curiosity, did you guys know that Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale also directed the 2001 Disney film Atlantis: The Lost Empire?
Hercules is one of my favorites of the Disney films released in the 90s(followed by Tarzan) and I really wish Disney would give it a special edition release. I remember watching that parade on tv and one of my relatives was actually there to see it. Can you tell Disney plays a HUGE part in my life in one way or another? Hehehe. :D
They say hell in who framed roger rabbit
I honestly wouldn't say that was made for a young audience though... Between all the creepy stuff and Jessica Rabbit.
SAVE ME TIMON !
@HinataChick38 Ah, I can see why both of us seem to fall on the same page. I must've felt like a hygienic neat freak when I shamefully uttered my remark. Then again, it really does pay to be sharply chastised, but I'm glad it didn't happen by having to be turned into a beast!
I used to own a Hercules Zeus plate from McDonald's. I think I still have it somewhere, but no idea where.
that's why they had the sequel - to straight the facts right. You should check it out, they had Thomas Rolfe on Pocahontas II: Journey to the New World.

Hercules. I think making Hades a fast talker made him more unique.
Wow, Pocahontas's production is just what they needed.
@ElectricDragon505 when are you gonna do an animation lookback for Pixar?
250 million dollars worldwide is still considered hit-worthy (especially for the 90s).
5:04
Who’s the third guy?
The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the creepiest Disney movie that I've seen.
I kinda want to live in the universe where John Candy was in Pocahontas. I bet that would have been a sight.
@ElectricDragon505 But it was in partnership with Disney. I think it's important to mention
Because of lore more than likely. She is supposed to be a spirit guide.
You mentioned Belle and Pumba, but what about those other two guys who were circled? I can't tell who they're supposed to be....
0:29
The name should be pronounced "Ko-co-um", but other than that, I'm loving this!
While Hades and Zeus are brothers, I'm not sure if Hades would qualify as Hercules' uncle. He never talks to Hercules like an uncle, is never talked about like an uncle, and just about everybody on Mount Olympus is either Zeus's sibling or descendant.
Guess what else came out by Disney in 1995? Hmmmmm?
Baazilika BESIDES THE OBVIOUS
Baazilika Plus that was Pixar
A Goofy Movie
Sackboy Warrior BINGO!!!!!
DilvaNunner YAY
@katherined they were in part 8.
6:48 That picture is the wrong Ken Duncan. That's Ken Duncan the photographer, not the animator.
Talk about the Mickey short RunAway Brain!!!!!!
When children grow older they'll see how beautiful Pocahontas is.
were part 8 of Animation Lookback: Walt Disney Animation Studios.

I know I'm late but didn't maleficent say hell in sleeping beauty
Oh, and I'm trying to read the book. I've just haven't found the time.
I heard that John Candy died of an obesity-related illness, which must've been what caused so-called "health freaks" to start breathing down our necks sometime in the mid 2000s. Luckily I have been losing some weight recently thanks to a Weight Watchers program I enrolled in last month.
Why are judges always the bad guys? you got Judge Doom in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and Judge Frollo in "Hunchback of Notre Dame".
I was also born the same year as the Hunchback and I also might think the same.
Who's the third guy? You only pointed out Bell and Pumba.
