I just took delivery of a Spin 714 today thanks to your earlier review. And, I got the $570 sale price! (It was $700 when I ordered it, but the price dropped the day before it arrived at the store. No problem, Best Buy credited me with the difference even before I picked it up.) Oh, and after using it for a couple of hours I got another update -- to Chromebook Plus system.

I've been happily using the Lenovo Duet 5 for a couple of months. I really like its configuration with a detachable keyboard - gives the device a lot of versatility. I have it set up at my desk on a tablet stand, with the keyboard detached, and connect a mouse and an extrenal kyeboard via BT. This way, I can easily take the device off the stand and carry it over to the couch to use it as a tablet. Amazing machine.

A nice list of Chromebooks, but very surprised you dropped the Acer Spin 513 from your list from last year.
Yes it falls short of the 'Chromebook Plus' designation because of its webcam. But its ARM powered cpu (Kompanio 1380) still puts it head and shoulders above most other options if you want totally silent (fanless) operation and a stunning 3:2 (2256 x 1504 px) display.
So how long before we see an ARM powered Chromebook Plus? - after all, Apple have gone all-in on them...

Hi Chrome Unboxed - thanks for the vid! :-) I've just bought my first two chromebooks, and initially loved the user experience, but one of them - a Lenovo Ideapad 3 had a TN screen that I just can't live with, and the other - a Lenovo Ideapad 5 with a i3 cip inside immediately began to make fan-noise after first setup!?? :-o I've been on a Mac Mini with the M1 chip inside for the last 2 years that makes absolutely no noise under ANY circumstances, and an Asus Vivobook with an i5 that I've had to completely power down for battery efficiency - also triggering complete silence, luckily :-) My point is - I think Non-ARM CPU's are a thing of the past - or will be soon. So which Chromebook can you recommend with ARM CPU and also minimum of LCD or preferably Amoled screen and 8 or more GB's of storage? I returned both Chromebooks :-/ The one with the TN screen had a Mediatek chip - so zero noise which was great, but only 4GB RAM

I've looked through all your videos here and I've not seen but only one video on a Chromebox and that was to upgrade something inside. Are you going to be giving reviews on Chromebox or maybe a 2024 project. I don't really like laptops because I can't see those smaller screens very well, but I am thinking of upgrading to a Chromebox as to use an external monitor, keyboard and mouse. They seem to be more of what I'm looking for as a desktop replacement. Thank you.

I got the HP x360 14c from Best buy when it was on clearance and open box for $250! Definitely the best deal on a Chromebook I've seen. The display isn't great (compared to the Duet 5 I was coming from) but everything else is fantastic! It's not a $700 Chromebook but for around $400 you could do much worse! Definitely a steal at $250.

I own Lenovo Duet 5 for about 6 months. It is great device in many aspects, but it's glass is extremely fragile. So I suggest to buy screen protector if available.
I'm very careful user, but there appeared some micro-scratches in the first hours of usage (when I just watched on device and only made several touches to the screen).
I tried to be even more careful, but scratches only appeared more.
Last time I accidentally touched Lenovo's screen with soft edge of paperbook - and it cause the defect on the screen similar to stone hit, small cracks on the glass. I understand this was my bad, but cracks after the impact with paper...
At the same time I'm using Lenovo M9 extensively, without screen protector - and it's screen still without any defect.

I hope there will be a review of the Chromebook Plus CX34. I'm searching for a Chromebook Plus with touchscreen and a higher end chip, so it's basically the only option i have…
(I don't really need the extra performance, I just want to it to be 1000% future proof. I'm heavily disappointed by my OG Duet, it handles most Android apps worse than my 10 yo tablet and it was kind of expensive back then…)

Aren't Intel processors ( even newest) get hot and require fans to work and make noise? Heavy MacOS runs on ARM processors and doesn't need fans in basic configs like Macbook Air. One of my main priorities in Chromebook is fanless design with desktop browser experience which Macbook Airs do provide BUT for a lot of money.
From this list probably only affordable Lenovo Slim 3 with MediaTek chip gets closest to my needs but from what I understood Kompanio line is very weak in MediaTek's portfolio and is laggy.

As a non-gamer I would still go for the good old Google Pixelbook for which there's still no real replacement after all those (more than 6!) years. Its design is still stunning, I've yet to see a better looking device. With the recent update extension to August 2027 there's also no need for a new Chromebook for me. It still gives my a slight heart attack though every time when it refuses to turn on, but by now I know how to fix it.

I'm in Chromebook heaven right now, having picked up an Asus CX34 for £245 (about $309) in the Black Thingummy sales here in the UK. Prior to that, I had been running ChromeOS Flex (and CloudReady before that) for over a year, on a Lenovo G50 fitted with 8GB of RAM and an SSD drive. I went to these extreme lengths because laptops are hideously overpriced in the UK, and as a retired developer I had the skills to pull it off.
The most noticeable improvement has not been Android but advanced memory management. Linux apps leaked memory something rotten, especially when I was running Android Studio. Without much effort, I managed to build a very large Android app on a CPU it had no right to run on. This would have been out of the question on any version of Linux, so it annoys me when Linux advocates dismiss ChromeOS as just another Linux distro.

I still don't understand why they don't just make an all out version of CBs or many other laptops.
If you want a 17" display, you only get 1080, and 4GB on most easily had machines with some 8GB units out there but all have low-end CPUs.
Or sometimes you find a good screen with good CPU but only 4GB ram, but comes with touch screen.
Then, great KB (backlit, nice feel, etc) but other components low end.
Or, why not solder on your 8GB ram and have another slot free for someone to add more if they want. Yes, not the intent but since they decided to really unlock Linux and dev mode, some on!
It feels like most almost want to try but give up on random parts of their design when they are halfway up to the top of the mountain.
Frame Work, the only one where you might be able to build a nice unit....still has no ordering available and page still says, "Get notified when this item comes back in stock." So it might as well not exist as you can't just buy one when you want to.

    What's the point of this?
When is Rob going to return to mentioning crouton? Never, I've accepted it. But, why no mention of the actual onboard linux, hm? Wanna talk about how google locked out even devs from accessing sudo priviliges? Of course not.
It's almost like this channel only cares about brand name shuffling these days.
