A woman sets out to reclaim her life in this stirring, emotionally rich look at what it means to start over. Tara (Gemma Arterton), a housewife in suburban London, is living a life that is no longer hers: it belongs to her overworked, self-absorbed husband (Dominic Cooper); her young son and daughter; and the numbing routine of housework and childcare. In desperate need of a change, Tara one day makes a bold decision. Armed with a one-way ticket to Paris, she leaves everything behind to rediscover herself in a new city - but walking out on your life isn't so simple... Built around a remarkable central performance from Gemma Arterton, The Escape is a perceptive, deeply compassionate portrait of a woman on the rocky road to becoming herself.

Gemma Arterton was amazing in this movie. From the very beginning the pain written on her face astounded me - I immediately felt bad for her, and continued to for the whole movie.
O B
The character was disgusting
Omg me too! I wanted to just hug her and listen to whatever she says.
Depression is real, but you can't just leave your responsibilities and those that rely on you, I can't sympathize with someone that abandons their kids.
Ya, this movie sounds like well made garbage catering to dumb, self absorbed and valueless bitches who depend on the state for their "independence".
Check out Our Children". Much better; has the balls to go deep into REAL depression.
Props to Alonso for the timely DJ Khaled reference.
Gemma Arteton and Dominic Cooper reunited - they played together in the brilliant Blighty comedy, Tamara Drewe. xx :)
I remember leaving my home everyday to go to work. I saw everyone doing the same thing at the same time every day (myself included). The car doors open, the kids get in, and off they go. Same time every day. I understand that this regiment often makes for highly successful people. But, I felt it to be slightly dehumanizing.
^ just because someone is in a better position than others doesn't mean they can't still feel dehumanized?
Nice to see such overflowing empathy in the comments, lol...
Anti-feminist bots and trolls for some reason.
Ya, b/c all contrary perspectives must be bots right? Fucking idiots.
Well, he said bots *AND* trolls, which, btw, is precisely what you clearly are
Iggsy81 .. coming from a regular TYT troll yourself. Troll is a loaded term moron
Iggsy81
Bots aren’t that advanced dick head
i saw the movie but i couldnt understand the end, can someone please explain??
thanks!
K. Lawrence She left her husband and her kids. That’s that! Not all women want to be a wife and mother.
orlandobabe thanks for explaining
K. Lawrence no problem, the hardest part is figuring out if Tara is happy with her free life or not.
Watching the movie I was expecting her to actually like become an artist and find some happiness, but in the end all that she knows is that she needs something else. Which I guess I like because it's just being honest, like the movie is only that part of her life, the part where she admits she's not happy and does something about it. Kind of open ended in a way. Also definitely not a feel good movie. But important.
Every young mother I know, I wonder if deep down inside are they really happy with their choices of being wives and mothers. I know in my heart I wouldn't be happy as one or the other. Tara here was regretting getting married and having kids and there are tones of cases like these. Where I'm from the women seem like drones programed to believe that they are suppose to be married and having kids and being happy. It is an illusion.
Eddie Redmayne's performance as Gemma Arterton is perhaps his finest performance.
omfg this killed me.. well done lol
It's a good film to watch. Gemma Arterton's acting skills is superb!
DJ Khaled! 😂I love Alonso
I adore the concept of this, I can't wait to see it. Art explores male feelings of being trapped by family or domestic life all the time, where this film depicts something just as prevalent yet consistently diminished in favor of what everyone else in a woman's life feels.
list these male films please
Watch 'Our Children'; It has the balls to go deep into the darkness of depression. This sounds like a movie where a woman fails to truly get to know their man, herself and her nature, before having his babies and then taking advantage of a corrupt and sexist legal system that props up the disintegration of the family and society (a la Agenda 21) in the pursuit of careerism; something that nobody but other self absorbed women care about? No healthy man gives a shit what a woman does for a living (unless she's a prostitute or stripper lol) and no healthy woman either, unless she is childless.
Still haven't listed the films.
If you're gonna make a statement, try backing it up.
I am actually both of those things actually. You lefties are terrified of what you know is coming with the internet allowing for real free speech. Change your tune or you will continue to be on the wrong side of history.
nice copy paste comment
Is it genuine depression or a licence to avoid responsibility?
Definately the later.
A woman who is not happy in a marriage ... WOW ... now that is something ya don't hear about very often ... Life's tough suck it up .. Would love to see the roles reversed .. not sure one gets many story lines like that today ... Just saying
A, aparently, slow film about a histerical woman driving crazy ? Hm... no thanks... Seems like the pure version of "I smile back".
Are you Guys on letterboxd?
Remindes me of the dolls house
You guys should take a look at Piercing.
Let me save 10 minutes of your life the movie is about a self scented whole
Who abandons there kids and cheat on her husband
That people like because it’s a pretty woman crying
I guess you're like the husband who is completely oblivious
@@ravyn1320 By your rationale, if a man feels trapped in a terrible job, raising a family, being berated by his wife, there would be a double standard, right? The Tara character is unhappy so she abandons her family (and has an affair) and is "finding herself." If the man did it, he's a scoundrel philanderer who is just dodging his responsibility. She's supposed to leave and find herself and he's supposed to suck it up. That said, I didn't like the husband either. He was abusive and indifferent to his wife's unhappiness.
So.... This is about a woman fleeing her responsibility to her family because she is sad.... Life's a bitch...
baghead777 happens in real life all the time sadly ..
Hanniffy Dinn That's what feminism does.... Life is not supposed to be happy..
wooooow, i was wondering when some pathetic resentful jackass would bring up feminism XD you know what's hilarious, it's that piece of shit attitude like of yours that made the women in your life leave you XD
baghead777 totally agree feminism is not mentally healthy in any way
FEMINISM IS CANCER
Watched it. Pure anti family propaganda trash.
bingo.. watch Our Children if you want REAL depression
Another Feminist movie.
So we can have plenty of movies where men are grappling with problems in theirs lives and it's all praise about dealing with some sort of existential angst and the difficulties of being a man in modern society.
But if the protagonist is female it's automatically a "feminist movie".
Such a comment reveals how prevalent men have no interest in perceiving women as individuals who also have to deal with today's life pressures.
Of course a woman's perspective of life is not as important as a man's.🙄
And let's just conveniently ignore the droves of men who leave their wives and kids for pastures new.
Both men and women have flaws and failings and bother genders are dealing with the drastic social changes occurring.

In a movie if a husband walks away from his responsibility as a husband and father it is seen as a despicable act.
In this movie the wife walks away from her responsibilities yet she is seen as a hapless victim.
No. Her actions should be deplored just as a man’s would.
You're part of The Young Turks network? Lmao. Unsubbed.
