How We Filmed The Final Moments of Two Sinking Ships

  • We decided to sink large tugboat and a massive metal sailboat and the scuttling event needed to be visually documented. This one shot filming opportunity would require several cameras and angles to capture the intense and cinematic moments of these boats succumbing to the ocean waters. This was the last time these ships would see direct sunlight and be exposed to air so we just had one take to capture these climatic moments.
These boats were sunk intentionally to create artificial reefs off the coast of northeast Florida. The concept is that the rigid steel structures provide substrate for marine organisms to colonize. Eventually organisms including coral and sponges grow on the sunken ship structures and provide resources to other marine life including fish. An area of marine life abundance is created benefitting the ocean environment while creating a recreational destination for scuba divers.
Sink cameras were strategically attached to the vessels prior to their sinking. Each ship had 3 "sink cams." After the ships sunk divers recovered all of the sink cams. When footage was reviewed it turned out only three of the six cameras recorded the actual moment of sinking. My assumption was the cameras that did not record ran out of battery life however this was not the case. Three cameras stopped recording with plenty of battery life. For some reason they stop recording.
The ship mounted cameras that did capture the sinking moments resulting in some epic visuals as you will see in this video.

A very sad scene to watch. I wonder if her old captain was allowed to be present as well as other shipmates. 🙏💓

Would love to see the boat actually traveling down to the sea floor

Why did you sink them instead of fix them up and use them still? Just curious.

To create ocean habitat. See the link to the full video in the description area.

Plus it's much more expensive to clean them and fix them. Why not give them to the fishies!? They need homes too! (And other cute sea creatures like Nemo and such, lol)

I'm just wondering but if you have an opportunity to do this again do you think you could show the interior of the ship flooding from like the bottom deck all the way to the top? I've seen other videos show that and it's very interesting to watch

For a person that hustle so hard to make an opprtunity owning a boat in future this is sad.. what a good boat sunk as coral..

“Underwater real-estate” “cool energy”. The point of the English language is to express clearly what is intended, rather than leave people wondering what you really mean and how to apply it in their minds to make a sense of continuity and understanding in the moment. One other thing….if you wish to make a habitat for sea life, use rocks and other forms of natural aggregate and recycle the ship. That is far more efficient and healthy for those that live in the sea. There are millions of tons of metal in the sea already. Apply nature to help nature. Don’t pollute it for a short lived and short sighted dream.

its all pretty cool but i think mother nature was doing just fine without us adding more junk to our ocean. i get the concept but just think we dont need to add anymore human intervention to our seas

Can you imagine that everything in the sea has lived and survived and thrived without your garbage and it's done so since the beginning of time can you imagine how much it would really thrive if we didn't exist at all because perhaps if we didn't destroy everything we touched the Earth would be such a better place without us

Yeah, making artificial reefs for the protection for the fish, definitely pollution!

This is cool and all, but how about an update on the marine life ? I’d like to see some of that footage instead of just more pollutants to the ocean.
