I was a 90s comic book kid. I remember all of those X Men foil/holographic covers, "special editions," "trading" cards, allegedly "rare" McFarlane toys and all that over-hyped marketing bullshit that made us think that we had to spend $100 a month to be a real fan. My garage is still full of them. Easier to sell eight million books when everyone buys four copies of the same issue (and I had all four.) Jim Lee is still one of the greats, though.
Yeah, the 90's was an interesting time in the history of comics in that was when sales were at their highest point ever. Greed was rampant during this time with almost ever comic publisher taking advantage of their customers by over-hyping everything they put out. It pretty much wrecked the industry when people started to realize that those comics they bought were not really worth much because the market was over-flowing with multiple copies. Stan Lee is a legend in the comic industry and is responsible for so many great characters and stories, but it is disappointing that he is as guilty as everyone else involved in that shady side of the business. It had nothing to do with writing stories and entertaining people and everything to do with getting a few more dollars out of their loyal readers. It was a short sighted vision for a quick cash grab that would leave a long lasting resentment for most of the people that had bought those comics .
