How to Make A Scratch Awl // Woodworking Project
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 сер 2024
- I made these scratch awls from one blank, turning them on my wood lathe. It was a really fun project, and I learned a lot about turning, as well as other things. This honey locust wood is really dense, but I love how it looks in a finished product.
Big thanks to my friend, Doug, for letting me bounce ideas off of him for this video. Go check out his videos...they're great!

They turned out really great! Very high quality produced/edited video. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and leaving me comments! I appreciate the kind words...means a lot.
First turning video, awesome!
Yep! It was fun. Thanks, Caleb!
Love the copper. I know very little about turning, but it seems like you're picking it up very quickly!
Thanks, Robert! It’s a lot of fun!
Well done Bruce! Thanks for sharing the tips about which end to put the ferrule on the lathe... that will save me some time when I get a lathe! That honey locust is beautiful. Also, nice job on the sync with the music!
Thanks so much, Doug! I think I knew better than to orient it the way I did for the ferrule, but I wanted to experiment anyway. Thanks for the compliments on the music sync!
Looks like a great little project and thanks for including the differences on how to shape the ferrule ends. Certainly going to store that tip for if/when I get a wood lathe!
Thanks! Glad you could find it useful.
Cool video man, lessons learned. The end result was great regardless
Thanks, Robin! Yeah, sometimes it is good to just experiment with things in order to learn.
not bad at all
Thank you very much!
never heard of that wood before, nice grain in it, good job.
I had not either until a couple of years ago when someone gave me some. There is also black locust, apparently. Thanks for watching!
Good Job. I might need to make some my self!
Do it! It was a rewarding little project! And the nails worked out perfectly for this. They’re cheap too...can get a whole box for about $4. Thanks for watching, Neil!
Nice job Bruce! I'll have to try it on my new lathe ;-)
Thanks! Yeah...start thinking of things you can make on the lathe. I’ve really started having to think about things differently since getting my Lathe.
Great video, and cool project! Was listening to MMP this morning, and heard Mike give you a shout-out. Makes me want to get a lathe!
Thanks, Jonny! That was cool to get a shoutout from Mike for sure! Lathes are a lot of fun. I’ve not had this one long, but it definitely opens up a lot of other opportunities for making things or adding to other projects.
Great project for someone to practice on the lathe, but also make a useful tool.
Thanks, Michael! Yeah, it was a fun one & my brother uses it a lot.
Great video :) They came out really beautiful Bruce :) I just bought one for leather work, didn't even think about making one. They came out great!
Thanks, Edd! I did that the other day. I was working with my dad on a project and needed a Wooden ball. He was talking about going to the store to buy one. I finally had the thought to make one. Ha
Nice work
I used one in an upcoming video that made drilling small holes in wood alot more accuerate. I kind of under estimated their useful ness for layout.
Thank you! I used to feel the same way about them. You’re right though, they really help your accuracy improve.
I definitely need to make one of those! I needed one for my latest project and just ended up using a screw. Use what works, right? :)
Hey, that works too! This is one of those handy things that will be used often. I made these as gifts, but I’ll be making another one for me.
Are they for sale?
Thank you for the interest but these were given as gifts.
@@BruceAUlrich Noooo! They must be sold! 😭
Well, I’m flattered. Thank you for the confidence boost!
