The Entire Life of Filius Flitwick (+ Goblin Origins) - Harry Potter Explained

Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In this video, we’ll be discussing professor Filius Flitwick- resident charms master of Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry, and head of Ravenclaw house. Filius comes from the latin word for ‘Son’ and it has been expressed that his name is derived from ‘filius philosophorum’ which means ‘the philosophers son’- a symbol in alchemy.
When new students are first sorted in to Ravenclaw- they are introduced to their head of house in the follower manner:
"Speaking of eccentrics, you'll like our Head of house, Professor Filius Flitwick. People often underestimate him, because he's really tiny (we think he's part elf, but we've never been rude enough to ask) and he's got a squeaky voice, but he's the best and most knowledgeable Charms master alive in the world today. His office door is always open to any Ravenclaw with a problem, and if you're in a real state he'll get out these delicious little cupcakes he keeps in a tin in his desk drawer and make them do a little dance for you. In fact, it's worth pretending you're in a real state just to see them jive."
Flitwick is an interesting character as, though he is quite prevalent, not a lot of information is ever revealed about him or his backstory. At least not too directly. However, what we can do is piece together Flitwick’s story with the little tidbits that we’re sporadically given.
Filius was born somewhere in the British Isles to the wizarding family, the Flitwicks. His small stature can be attributed to what Rowling has described as a ‘dash’ of goblin blood- stemming back to what we believe to be his great, great, great grandparent. Clearly, goblin blood is quite potent, as despite preceding Filius’s existence by several generations, it still had a profound impact on his physical stature. We don’t know which of Filius’ parents carried the goblin blood, or exactly how far back it would have been introduced to his bloodline-but we do know that it stemmed from long before Filius. We don’t know what year he was born, because we don’t actually know how old Filius Flitwick is- and this is further complicated by the fact that the character we see on screen in films is portrayed in 2 very different ways. We’re first introduced to Flitwick right at the beginning of the books/films, in Harry Potter & the philosopher’s stone- then we see the same Flitwick return in harry Potter and the chamber of secrets. This version of Flitwick is grey-bearded, bald and clearly quite old - perhaps even giving Dumbledore a run for his money. But then, out of nowhere, The Prisoner of Azkaban introduces us to an entirely different, NEW Flitwick- a much younger version of the professor sporting a full head of brown hair, and a large curled moustache. They did a bit of a 180 on his character, but I have personally become much more familiar with the younger, brown-haired Flitwick that was present for the majority of the films.
But, while we don’t know Flitwicks EXACT age, there is a lot of speculation floating around that he was born sometime between 1935 and 1958 (this is a wide range, I know). 1958 seems late, because this would mean that he was only 40 during the Battle of Hogwarts, which makes no sense to me. 1935 on the other hand would make him 63 during the Battle of Hogwarts, which doesn’t quite match his newer appearance. I’m thinking that I personally feel best about splitting the difference- and assuming that Flitwick was born in the year 1946, which would make him 52 during the battle of Hogwarts. For some perspective, this would make him 5 years older than Bellatrix Lestrange, 2 years older than Alastor Moody, and 11 years younger than McGonagall (assuming she was born in 1935)- this seems about right.
Like most other characters, Flitwick also attended Hogwarts in his youth. Due to his goblin heritage-Flitwick was initially treated like a second class citizen by many - the result of stigma towards goblins in the wizarding community.
“Goblins, while they appear to have at least a grudging co-existence with the wizarding world, have nonetheless experienced much discrimination from wizards, and many have led significant uprisings against them in the past.”

I remember an old claim that the make-up & dressing department had a nightmare trying to get old Flitwick ready, they said it took 4 hours. The newer younger Flitwick took a lot less time and also fewer complications than the old Flitwick
most likely one of the factors for the new look. He's not seen for along anyway usually. I watch a show called Stargate SG1. One of the main cast who voiced kratos in the god of war video game series was a servant of aliens who posed as gods, many posing as Egyptian gods. His physiology was altered and to reflect the physiology from the movie that inspired the TV show as well as ancient Egyptian culture, he had to get eye shadow, a 3d golden protrusion on his forehead and his dark skin had to be shaded to look golden. He would have to arive before everyone for the makeup. The guy also had to shave his head bald.
Over the seasons, they gradually reduced the amount of makeup needed and found lore friendly ways to explain it. He also wanted to grow his hair out and after a few season he got to grow a beard and his hair.
One of the things to consider is that, with the amount of prosthetics flit wick had, it would make him a statue, making it hard to show emotions and only being able to use his eyes and his mouth. With the more tamed look, all his facial features could be used. This is also why aliens in movies have a more human look. so we get to see their face move. When using practical effect for aliens who cant have a human inside, theirs at least 1 full remote control dedicated to the face. Humans are much more used to reading emotions trough facial features then body. Unless you are making an alien or fantastic beast who should be out of this world and mysterious like a 4rth dimensional being, then the best course is to not go too makeup and prosthetic heavy on the actor

I have a dumb little theory that I tell myself, it helps me explain how he looked older in the earlier films.
It is that he messed around with the with an Age line (or whatever that thing Dumbledore put down to guard the goblet of fire was called)
and got stuck being older for a few years, but it eventually wore off by the prisoner of Azkaban.
Eh, like I said it is dumb, but its better than not being explained.
That wouldve been a STRONG age line. I still think it’s quite possible though.

Yes finally we have a Flitwick video now I wouldn't mind at all if Harry Potter Theory were to release a video on madam Hooch mainly because like Flitwick she is another character that is referred to you see her a couple of times and then phhht that's it Beyond refereeing quidditch matches you don't see her again or really even hear about her and I feel that is a great disservice to that hawk-eyed referee that she's never seen or heard from again really but enough about me thank you for your comment and have a pleasant day to a friend and happy Holidays happy New Year Here Comes 2021.

Flitwick and McGonagall were in the same year at Hogwarts.
Interestingly enough, they also had the same dilemma with the sorting hat where they were both equally suited to both Gryffindor and Ravenclaw houses
I like a lot of the hogwarts teachers but flitwick was diffently one of my favorites he was always a very kind person and I remember during the books during charms students where even allowed to have some free time and he was never very harsh and he treated everyone the same
My sentiments exactly. He is my favourite teacher at Hogwarts. And I always said… Ravenclaw is my favourite house because he's my favourite head of house. I think the only way I would feel okay about sending kids to Hogwarts is if they were in Ravenclaw because at least I know they'd be looked after.
Brilliant professor loved him .... would of love to see him dueling and using his vast knowledge in charms to outmatch his opponents ..... In the films he was also the choir director

I've always loved him and am very happy he's head of Ravenclaw. He was definitely the nicest teacher and his Charms were clearly very helpful. He was a character that was very underutilised but I hc he's very popular amongst students for his kindness and sass
My favorite scene involving Flitwick in the movies was after the Weasley twins set off all the fireworks in The Order of the Phoenix, and the crowd is cheering. His little fist pump makes me giggle no matter how many times I watch that movie.
Flitwick sure was a nice man.

I want to know what spell Voldemort used in the tower on Harry during the last battle. It was a blue / black spell and you could see it after the scene where Neville sees the sword.

I never understood the need to drastically change Flitwick’s appearance in the movies. Would have loved to have seen old man Flitwick showing everybody why he was a duelling champion and why he still should not be underestimated, even in his old age.
Could you just imagine? Not only would you have to deal with his incoming spells but likely the entire environment you were fighting in

The third film was produced by another director. However, he did not change Flitwick's appearance, but decided that the role of Flitwick should not appear in the third film at all, as he was not that important to the plot. However, he did introduce another character who didn't exist in the books or the other films: the choirmaster of the frog choir. He chose the actor Warwick Davis, who had previously played Flitwick, to play this choirmaster.
The fourth film was produced by another director. He liked the choirmaster and his appearance so much that he decided that the choirmaster and Professor Flitwick should be one and the same person, so he adopted the choirmaster's appearance from the third film for the role of Flitwick. The actor was already the same 😉.
I love how all the Hogwarts teachers are exceptionally talented in their trade. I expect no less from these professors, but they are also some of the strongest characters in the war against Voldemort. I love all the professors for both their personality and their powers

I too enjoy his younger form in the movies, I like the idea of him haveing goblin blood! While I always thought he was a gnome, I think the story of a wizard and a goblin falling in love and haveing children would be brilliant! They would likely be shunned for sure by other goblins and all but the most kind of magic users would treat there children with prejudice, witch If you think about it would make sense why Dumbledore would be fine with makeing him a charms professor

Wow! I found this video two years late! But anyway… My favourite professor at Hogwarts... got a bit of a krush on him and always have done. He's definitely the kindest one out there. But there's so little known about him, and that's what makes it so much fun to write fanfic about him. Anyway… Even though it is two years late… I have to say… This video about him it was much better than the hatchet job that Harry Potter folklore did on him. Thank you.

Your discussion regarding the selection of Flitwick being sorted into Ravenclaw exposes the obvious plot flaw and inconsistency of Granger NOT being sorted into Ravenclaw.
It depends. Remember the sorting hat takes your desires into consideration, Hermione expresses a clear preference for Gryffindor before being sorted so its not hard to see why the sorting hat placed her there
Who's to say Flitwick didn't do the same for Ravenclaw back when he got sorted?
Yep, just one of the mini potholes in the story. I think Hermione being sorted into Gryffindor is just lazy storytelling in my opinion. Just easier to bang them all three in the one house rather than have to manage the complication of all three of them being in different houses. So annoying.

Hello Harry Potter theory, I was recently watching the animagus video you made about 6 months ago and noticed a common mistake that you made. James and sirius became animagi in their 3rd year at hogwarts and Peter took until his 5th to complete the procces, rather than what you said, claiming that the 3 marauders were all 15 when they completed the procces. In fact the exact book text was Lupin said to Harry, "it took them the best of 3 years to work out how to do it. Your father and Sirius were the cleverest students in the school"

Well flitwick was charms master I think he used a special kind of spell/potion with help of snape to change his looks

isnt there a quote about "dumbledore and flitwick, those model students" which implies he is almost as old as dumbledore?
i see no reason to assume why his look would determine anything. magic of all things should be able to de-age your appearance. i always assumed wizards had a preference for embracing their old appearance as opposed to hiding it like muggles do.which is why really old wizards look old and decide not to change their appearance too much.

Little fact for ya. Flitwick is pronounced “flit-ick”. I know this simply because I live in Flitwick. I read some time ago that she named the character after the town

The third film was produced by another director. However, he did not change Flitwick's appearance, but decided that the role of Flitwick should not appear in the third film at all, as he was not that important to the plot. However, he did introduce another character who didn't exist in the books or the other films: the choirmaster of the frog choir. He chose the actor Warwick Davis, who had previously played Flitwick, to play this choirmaster.

Further complicating things as far as his age is the fact that goblins age differently than humans and put even a little Goblin blood in him if it is that it is very possible that split weeks older than he looks.

So, I was playing Hogwarts Mystery and I sorted myself into Slytherin. Snape treated me horribly there even though I was his student and the top of my year.
Later, I replayed the game and sorted myself into Ravenclaw. Professor Flitwick is the best Head House and even when I got into trouble, he'd still treat me well. I am still a proud Slytherin but I like Professor Flitwick better. He's absolutely the best in my opinion. (though I do really like Professor McGonagall too)
(No hate to Snape fans, I just got really uncomfortable around him for some reason. Totally understand why Neville is afraid of him)
Snape hates You because of the story itself, it's not his mistake to talk nice whether in Slytherin or not
@@kalaivani1679 Bruh, I did every side quest to gain his favour. Although at the end of the game, he no longer hates me, its still insufferable. Professor Flitwick on the other hand, although he knew about my supposed troublemaking brother(MC's brother) , still treat me fair. Even other professors don't descrimate me because of my brother. He's just being cranky as he'd always had been.

i never paid much attention to some parts of Harry Potter (just look at some of the photo's/screenshots in this video already........................Hermione always distracts me a little.......can't blame me haha)
but the point is: there is so much more to less important characters and because of this channel those characters and their backstories do make them important characters from now on, all because of your video's.
also: i never read any of the books so maybe that's why i know less about them (and thus feel less for them)

She did, in one of the scenes in Order of the Phoenix she took a measuring tape and measured Flitwick while he was teaching his students.

It’s because the GOF director, Mike Newell, made the unnamed younger choir conductor from the 3rd film Flitwick.
