In the 1000 Islands region, we rarely dropshot with a weight less than 1/2 oz, and often use 5/8 and 3/4oz weights due to current. Typical depths are from 10-40 feet. Even so, we typically use size 1 or 2 dropshot hooks and small baits. The rod action you mention is too light in the tip to present or work those baits effectively because the heavy weights dload the tip too much. What are your thoughts?

In those extremely deep or heavier current situations, you may want a heavier power or a longer rod for sure. The ZOLO McSmalls was designed and tested on lakes like Lake Champlain by Shayne McFarlin. It's that 7'6" range and handles Swimbaits, tubes, ned rigs and spy-baits with ease. May be what you're looking for.
