Country Death Song is one of those tracks that never left me. Still listen to it decades later even though I don't listen to them very much nower days. Somewhat disturbingly I got my daughter to like Violent Femmes with this song. :)

I have three daughters and have introduced them to the Femmes as well. I have however decided to let them find this particular song on their own if they wish.

I turned 20 when this album came out. It rocked my world.

I was about 10 when I first heard it. You can imagine how it would spook the shit out of a 10-year-old kid -- it hit me like like an acoustic-punk-country rendition of a Stephen King novel.

I was 10 when this came out. I remember liking it more than the first self titled debut album. I still feel the same way. It's one of my favorite albums from the 80's.

As someone who only in the past year discovered the Femmes, I can safely say they are one of if not my absolute favourite band. Never Tell in particular is nothing short of astounding. Such raw, honest angst that you just don't see anymore with punk.

I'm glad you liked The Violent Femmes. If you do listen to their Self-titled, I'm sure there's at least one song on it you'll recognize. Blister in the Sun. It's in a lot of movies.

One of the best live bands! They sold a million copies of the first album with zero promo from their label, very little radio support.
The Femmes were discovered in Milwaukee playing on the street by one of the Pretenders band members. Subsequently asked to open that night for the Pretenders show. I was lucky to see them live a few times and there is nothing really like it. The Album in 1990-91 ‘Why do Birds Sing’ gained them more fans who then discovered their early music and their fan base continued to grow.

I've owned this album since it came out in '84 and still listen to it today. Absolutely love it. "Black Girls" lyrically is pretty cringy today, but it has a way of worming its way into your head and I can almost guarantee that you will listen to it again and again. The jaw harp solo always brings a smile to my face, especially when it shows up in that one measure solo after the longer solo. Great album.

@ 45:28 Re: your comment on the bass sound -- Ritchie often played an acoustic bass guitar. So when your ears are picking up a "pure bass" sound, chances are that's exactly what it is.

welp, I remember being turned on to these guys in 1984-5 while living in the army barracks by a very cool cook, and this music was so distinctive and unlike anything being made around then.
The vocals are a signature, the bass is ever present, the lyrics are intelligent, the music skips through genres seamlessly. Fantastic band.
I found your concerns amusing considering all the crap lyrics and themes that "rap" and " hip hop" , etc., have pumped into this society for the past 40 YEARS.
Rapists listening to the Violent Femmes, please.

Victor DiLorenzo ended suing Gordon Gano and as a result, he eventually left the band!
Gordon Gano father was the minister of the church I grew up in during my childhood.
When I was in high school, Rev.Gano directed a play I was in, the 1st night of rehearsal, which is usually a table read through, Gordon's mother, Fay wasn't there, so me being a precocious teenager, I asked where Fay was, Rev.Gano goes on to say, she is in NYC at Radio City Music Hall, cause the Femmes are playing a concert there!

Handsome Owen Wilson is right, 1984 was a different time, to be sure. My mom played this album on repeat and I am neither a murderous person or fond of elevators. Or corners. 55 mins ish if that reference skated

I like how you guys automatically assumed that it came out so much later. They were very influential on other bands one of Cobains top 5 (Not this album specifically but he had two albums in his top ten)

They still play black girls in concert . It's always fun I mean it's a completely batshit solo sandwiched by weird un pc preferences on one side and religious exclamations.

Their debut album was a hard act to follow -- it feels they conspicuously went for "even more moody and eccentric" and overreached a bit for this follow-up. Still a really solid album IMO, but I can understand why some Femmes fans and most non-fans who heard it were put off by it.

The UNFORTUNATE thing about your analysis is that this album was released 40 years, the penultimate time known as GENERATION X!
Us Gen X's are FERAL! Our parents had to be reminded every night at 10pm right before the 10pm news, that they had children! This is exactly what was broadcast so the reason for the capital letters!
ITS 10PM, DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR CHILDREN ARE?
Also, we didnt have school shootings, we did have OG Gangs back in the day! If you want to know what the societal feelings were back then, i would suggest Googling Community reaction to the movie: COLORS!
Thats what the line: he went downtown and got him a gun, truly means. It is talking about the gangs and their inane violence at that time

Brasi168..Aa a gen x, load of b.s ...school shootings? Dude i was hearing about one every 2/3yrs from '79 through the 80's...and most gen x kids were just bored suburban middle class listening to whatever was on the top 40 ... being out late dont qualify you as feral..neither does drinking water from.a hose....by 15 kickd out, was livin in an urban drug fuelled squat with nuthin but sharing a dogs bed with a wolfhound for sleep, coffee, cigarettes , uppers downers.. most kids in the 80's didnt even know about the Femmes let alone underground bands like Husker Du, Dinosaur Jr, early REM..and nuthin' here relates to anything about gangs n' violence...go back to watching your 'breakfast club 'b.s
