Met these guys about a month ago, they were all super chill and cool guys. Ray (bass) was amazing and the guy I got to hang with the most. He gave me tips on bass, and just flat out chilled with me for a solid 10 minutes answering questions and getting to know me better. These guys for sure don’t remember me, because our exchange was only about 20 minutes long, but I know I’ll remember them for the rest of my days. God bless ✌️

@@brandonligon3068 A lot of pressure, but I guess that's what crazy musicians who believe in God aspire.
When I play or even when I practice, I try to view it from the perspective that God is already watching, and he is the main audience.
The stories about David being a musician touched me in the bible.

Some of these musicians have exceptional memories and make it a point of their career to serve their fans.
So even though you may be one of the thousands of fans, don't be surprised if you touched them in the same way by being willing to ask for advice.

This was recorded the day after my sister died from ovarian cancer. I was only vaguely familiar with your work and first saw you (with Marc Cohn) 6 weeks after her death. When you sang this song in concert, I completely fell apart. It so deeply touched my heart. Thank you for the gift of music and its power to heal that you share with the world.

They were all raised in the same orphanage. Their parents abandoned them because they were blind and people used to abandon blind children in the old days. They grew up together and sang together. This is amazing grace to the tune of house of the rising sun and it's one of the best. Played it at my grandpas funeral.

Was fortunate enough to catch the Blind Boys at Dollywood April21,'18. Though time has only left three of the originals, they put on a heck of a show for guys in their 80's. They sang this as well as a several tunes from their new album. Had the audience on their feet, and one even came down with his guide and roamed the aisles toward the end. Consummate performers, they have added one gentleman to the group, and after the performance, they were kind enough to meet the audience outside of the auditorium

I saw PB being led to his seat after a program on a video. He was losing his sight or had lost it.the video was before he came to the BB's permanently. People were saying PB without WNJ and the keynotes is like grits without eggs but he has found that group and friends and I pray they will continue to spread the good news of Jesus.

Their version of "Amazing Grace" is incredibly powerful, for three reasons: (1) The tune was an old Blues song, long before it was used for "House of the Rising Sun".
    (2) The singers embody the lyrics about being "blind, but now, I see".
    (3) The lyrics are a poem, written in 1773, by Rev. John Newton---a former slave ship captain, who not only fully recanted his egregious sins, but became a minister and the first abolitionist to state that slavery was inhumane.

    • @DrJohn-rl9zg

I haven't done my research, but story has it that Newton was caught in a storm off of the South Carolina coast (hurricane?) and recognized his sins. It took him time to repent. There is an irony listening to the descendants of perhaps Newton's slave ship sing "Amazing Grace".
Disturbingly I spent several years at a major university in the deep south who's bell tower would play "Amazing Grace", yet too few White Southerners understood its significance.
As much as slavery is abhorrent to me, I appreciate the contributions African slaves made. In no small part they made the US a country worth living in.

I saw them (with Morgan Freeman, no less) in the Guthrie Theatre's production of Gospel at Colonus in 1987 when I was a freshman in high school. The production was a revelation and remains my favorite live theatre production, 35 years later. In the Oedipus death scene, The Blind Boys of Alabama wore all white suits, surrounded a white grand piano, and were lowered into the stage while singing. The powerful visual memory is seared in my brain.
