SJSU is in downtown San Jose so of course the homeless are present as well.

The same thing happened to me in the Student Union. On Wednesday, a man who went by the name “Mario” sat down directly across from me. I was preparing to give him some money when he proceeded to badger me with uncomfortable questions for the next 30 minutes. He asked for my social media, compared me to his ex-girlfriend, and asked if he was “special” to me. As someone who struggles with being put on the spot, I wasn’t sure how to approach the situation. Looking back, I definitely should have left right then and there, but I was sympathetic to his situation and didn’t want to upset him and possibly put myself in danger as a result. Campus security walked right past me several times and didn’t offer any help. Thankfully, another student was able to pick up on my visible discomfort and pretended to work on a group project with me until the man left, frustrated that the conversation had been cut short. It’s hard to feel safe on campus, especially as a young woman, when the proper safety fixtures aren’t in place. Students should not have to fear for their safety on campus.

Dont be afraid to come off rude , its your safety. Remember you're an adult , even though you're young. Be aware of your surroundings and dont stay too distracted with your phone or headsets. Remember the media will disguise anything as mental illness. Be safe

The same exact thing happened to me on Wednesday at 7:45 am in the student Union. Mario even put his hand on my shoulder and made me feel very uncomfortable. He wanted to follow me everywhere and didn’t want me to go to my next class. Thankfully I was able to convince him that I would buy him food and when I went down to the food area, I asked the workers at Paseo Fresh for help. I cried after thinking about the situation and feared for my safety.. I notified UPD as well, and I’m SO sorry you had to go through this as well. Wishing you a better day today. And let’s get SJSU safe.

If you're attending SJSU right now, these things always happen. It's not just an issue on campus, but also off campus. I get texts about harassment and violence at least once a month from SJSU warning me about a shooting nearby or a suspect nearby. It's become commonplace at this point, even though it shouldn't be whatsoever

SJSU 3rd year and ex-PD Cadet here, my advice to you is when strangers come up and start asking nonsense to you, just simply walk away. Or go straight to the SJSU PD. Alternatively, you could wave down a PD Cadet on their carts if they happen to be near by. They’ll radio Officers to the scene.
Please always have someone with you and never go alone at night. The area around SJSU is super sketch at night, especially the 7Eleven by the S garage. Speaking of the garages, there are no cameras in there so be on alert. Always have a battle buddy with you. Just a few weeks ago, a student was threatened with a knife in the garage. Pack a pepper spray with you or something to defend yourself. Don’t try to fight back for your own safety, either get away as fast as you can or comply with their requests. Remember, your safety is #1.

Just graduated, spent the last five years on campus. The amount of times I have been harassed and seen people be harassed is countless. I have pressed blue emergency buttons and nothing has happened. Not to mention constant shootings, acts of arson, armed robberies, and sexual assault that happens weekly on the streets bordering campus. The school is small, but they need to do much more to keep what doesn’t belong on campus out. Being such a large commuting school, it doesn’t seem like the safety of students is ever the priority. I have rarely ever seen police presence there aside from the parking garages. I have reported safety concerns time and time again with campus police as well as my department staff. Unfortunately, nothing has changed in the past five years. I’m glad to have graduated and be out of there.

Exactly. Why did this minor event get news coverage? In life you will run into different types of people, especially one's dealing with mental health. He wasn't violent, just asking weird questions. She should have gotten him help and went upon her merry way, end of story. I don't like the fact that most campuses are open but I've heard of worse events on my college campus that never got news coverage.

The area where SJSU is located, is unfortunately in a bad area of San Jose. This has been an ongoing issue with the SJSU. Unfortunately this will affect enrollment. Parents and potential students will think twice and be hesitant to come here, which will cost the university money. They need to do something now, like increase the police department there.

  • @photonez

There are many homes and shelters that house people with mental health issue in the the immediate neighborhoods surrounding SJSU. Any student living near campus or that has studied at the library knows where these houses are and regularly see the residents. However many students are commuter students and don’t understand the situation around campus. How about bringing some awareness to students regarding San Jose residents that are homeless or sheltered in group homes that house people with severe mental health issues?

Stop giving her flack. If she were White"/European let alone blonde, there would be much more sympathy. There is a lot of mistreatments of those of East Asian ancestry especially a lot of subtle forms I see in the comments. Also, being a minority like those of East Asian ancestry is subjected to lots of forms of abuse where one is stereotyped into being "submissive" and "unable to fight back", and, of course, that affects a person psychologcially jsut becuase thehyre treated according to thier physical ppearance; it's all a bunch of abusive gasligihting. In addition to this is what people of east Asian ancestry in western nations have to deal with everyday, she's still a kid despite her being above 18 as all college students are like that.

The man was having a mental episode and he asked a girl, who happened to be Asian, "weird" questions because he's mentally ill. BTW, the majority of mental health patients are non violent. Yes, Asians suffer from racial stereotypes & abuse in the US, but it doesn't pertain to this story, that is why it is being dismissed by the commenters. The commenters are mostly irritated at the journalist on NBC foolish enough to post this "story" who is trying to make this about Asian-hate when it isn't. If it seems like the commenters are attacking her, it's just that they aren't interested in hearing about her reaction to being exposed for the first time to real life situations, they feel like they've been click-baited.
She is young, grew up too sheltered, got scared, then ran and told this story to an ambitious, Asian-hate instigating journalist. The fact that she is Asian is why we are watching this silly story, especially with all the Asian-hate going on. But that is all this is, an unimportant story where no one got hurt and nothing significant happened. People of all races get approached by homeless/mentally ill people when they are in public. It doesn't make the news because those people get help, get away, or tell them to 'go away' and continue their day. A mentally ill person asking non-Asians "weird" questions would not get news coverage, unless violence or theft occurred. It only gets coverage if they are Asian, especially nowadays.
I went to an open campus that had far worse incidents than a mentally ill person asking "weird" questions to a student, which did not get any coverage beyond the student newspaper, but I agree that campuses should be more enclosed with more police. They should make improvements for everyone who attends now and in the future, because it can be scary when you encounter mentally ill people for the first time. Those changes could protect people from actual harm in addition to being asked "weird" questions.
