Schroeder doesn't "love" Lucy, but he doesn't "hate" her either. He "likes" her. He secretly enjoys her presence because she low-key kept things interesting for him. It's a similar dynamic to Squidward and Spongebob. Squid can't stand him, but sometimes appreciates his company and does care for him even if he won't openly say it. Same applies to Schroeder with Lucy.
The problem is the strip never gives a good reason why he tolerates her behavior, compared to SpongeBob where he gave Squidward the imagination and the excitement of being a kid, Lucy was a total pest and always antagonized his interests and never really gave him any benefits
I can see that, what with the Valentine's episode ending with his chewing everyone else out for ignoring Charlie Brown until the very last minute. Though then again, Charlie Brown ended up cutting him off and saying better late than never, then telling Linus he let Schroeder down for interrupting his tirade, so Schroeder might have just been being his opinionated self at that point.
Probably personal bias, but although Lucy doesn't respect Schroeder, she does have good intentions. Especially in what you said about their first kiss. (you just said this too) She needs to give him space. On the other hand, Schroeder doesn't hate Lucy. He consistently tolerates her despite her persistant attitude. I do think if she ever gave him more space, they could work.
The theory he comes up with for the first kiss may be wrong since she has kissed him non consensual many times, and she’s not the type to be very honorable
I’ve kissed people next to me out of pure excitement and it was never really romance but Schroeder’s reaction after Lucy thinks it’s Snoopy may be a little bit of proof in my opinion
I think Schroeder likes Lucy. Maybe not as much as Lucy loves Schroeder, but I think the romantic feelings are reciprocated in some way. There's been proof over the years about how Schroeder thinks of Lucy in a positive light; Example 1: When Schroeder jokes around with Lucy while she is supposedly "sleeping". There is this one comic strip (made on April 26, 1955) where Schroeder tells Charlie Brown how Lucy has beautiful eyes, although they can sometimes be a little out of focus. At 8:57 when the comic strip from December 14, 1975 is shown, Schroeder mentions at one point how he loves Lucy's eyes. Granted, in the end of that strip it is revealed that he was joking, but I think that could possibly be a reference to the first strip I mentioned. I also do find it a little weird, though, that he would go out of his way to play a joke by complimenting her instead of taking advantage that she isn't bothering him and he could focus on practicing the piano. I think some of the stuff Schroeder said is true, too. I think he really is fascinated by her and her commitment to him, no matter how much he pushes her away (I mean, who wouldn't be fascinated? A lot of people suffer from unrequited love and completely give up. Lucy is still madly in love with someone who always rejects her love *sometimes rejecting her love in a very harsh way*, and yet she still tries her best to make him like her. Sometimes her efforts might not be the best way to go about it, but still: the commitment is incredible!) Example 2: When the Van Pelt family moved away. Schroeder was flabbergasted that Lucy is actually gone, but doesn't enjoy it as much as he thought he would. He misses her being around, as almost every comic strip Schroeder is seen playing his piano, Lucy is with him. Since it's been that way for years, he might have gotten used to her talking to him during his practicing, with Schroeder only getting annoyed when Lucy is either being pushy or when she says/does something that is out of the blue. Some people say that he missed her as a friend, which could also be true. But, if he did miss her as a friend, he wouldn't JUST miss Lucy, he would miss Linus, too! Another thing I want to point out: When Schroeder thinks back on Lucy being around him, he thinks about when she talks about the possibility of them getting married. It could have been a memory of her celebrating Beethoven's birthday with him, or anything else. But, of all things, the memory he thinks back on is when she talks about marriage with him! Is that not just a little weird? Example 3: Beethoven's birthday Sunday strip. A lot of people will kiss someone if they are really excited about something, the kiss not being romantic in any way. But, basing from Schroeder's reaction after Lucy screamed and ran off, he genuinely wanted her to know that he was the one who kissed her, and not Snoopy. Why would he want her to know that? I honestly don't know. He could have just left her thinking that Snoopy kissed her, instead of putting in effort to call her back over to explain the misunderstanding. It is just as confusing as when he went out of his way to joke with her instead of practicing the piano! All in all, I think if Schroeder wasn't so obsessed with Beethoven and wanted his life to be exactly like his idol's life, and if Lucy wasn't so overbearing or crabby, they might work really nicely together. Both of them would need to fix their own flaws for their relationship (or maybe just their friendship) to work out, not just Lucy. But, flaws or no flaws, I think they both like each other romantically in different ways. What do you think?
I disagree that he finds her persistence interesting, harassment is harassment and it’s not behavior that should be praised or it’s behavior that’s spectacular. There are stalkers in real life that annoying. also Sally is really persistent, she’s not as aggressive as Lucy, but she still is persistent. The reason why the harsh rejections don’t work on Lucy is because she is a bully herself and she is really stupid for chasing someone that she has nothing in common and someone with 1 dimensional personality
Really always admired Schroeder and Lucy’s dynamic. Just them two or Schroeder in general gives me such happy vibes because of how hysterical they are.
There was one strip where she called him telling him she listens to Beethoven’s records, read his life story, got a post card from where he lived and found out about a museum there . And Schroeder said “ it’s not proper for girl to call boy on phone” And she auughhhed Guess he can see through her best tactics lol
I thought that it was so goofy that in one strip, Schroeder told Charlie Brown that he thinks Lucy’s eyes are beautiful behind her back. But that they never focus, being the reason she can’t play baseball.
I’ve read over 20 years worth of strips and I love what you said about her needing to let up so he’ll start to notice her because as you pointed, out her disappearing in the story arc where she moves away is exactly how he realizes she’s unwittingly become his muse. Also, in the early strips it was explicitly said he found her cute so I think it kinda makes sense that he would like her because he’s always found her cute, she’s confident, she really likes him, and she shows more interest in his interests than any other character even if it’s only to get his attention she’s ultimately doing it for him and because she wants to see him happy (and then happy with her). Even though she’s grouchy and kinda narcissistic a lot of the time and that can definitely be a red flag to Schroeder, I feel like most people who only know Peanuts from tv specials don’t realize that in the strips she’s much more of a usually well intentioned psychopath in the comic strips than the intentional bully she’s portrayed as in the tv specials. Except for Charlie Brown who everyone likes to make fun of (not just Lucy) and Linus for purposes of “normal” sibling fights, she usually has good intentions and is trying to be kind she just doesn’t know how and doesn’t understand the emotions of others.
Whitney Durant I think it’s awesome that you’ve done this much research! I was always a huge fan of the comics. I kinda stopped reading them as I got older cuz I thought it was embarrassing for me to like them. 😅But either way I really never thought he did have feelings for her. I also never saw that story arc so that’s pretty interesting
Also, I truly believe that Schroeder likes Lucy. One thing I also think is that Schroeder appreciates that Lucy goes to his house for him, not just his music. Most of the kids will just visit to hear some Beethoven, and then go play. Lucy, however, stays because she truly thinks he is fascinating. Why? I think probably because he actually DOESN’T pay very much attention to her, whereas her family does.
It’s the opposite actually, he wants his music to be praised he doesn’t care about the many compliments he receives by her. Also nobody cares about his music and gets made fun of it a lot of times for it
As Lucy never acts out violently with her love for Schroeder, shes more of a Himedere! Himedere is the princess type of dere, they usually expect the highest of treatment and are very needy! And since Lucy is in love with Schroeder, she expects him to reciprocate bc she views herself as royal and worthy
🤣I love the peanuts gang but seriously poor Schroeder, give him a break lmao, they but anyway they are all just little kids who don’t really understand love, hence why Lucy is soooo clingy 😖🤣 (and I think Schroeder kissed Lucy over excitement or just because he sees her as a friend and just missed her as a friend when she moved)
I don't know if this is a personal bias or anything, but for the life of me, I have never understood why the "character has a creepy crush on another character to the point of stalkerish obsession" trope was supposed to be funny or entertaining in the first place. There are a few examples I do like, like with Gaston's creepy crush on Belle in Beauty and the Beast, where it works because Gaston is being presented as the villain in that scenario, or Chowder, where the humor came more from Chowders *reaction* to Panini's crush on him rather than the crush itself. But more often than not, no matter the gender, I tend to find obsessive crushes in fiction more annoying than endearing.
I think this works better than most. When get to Lucy more vulnerable side and finally have some Karma delivered to her, even if it’s only temporary. It also fleshes out Schroeder character more because when get to see his more snarky attitude. Schroeder might also be one of the earliest and possibly fewest asexual characters portrayed in media; he shows no interest in girls or romance compared with everyone else in the strip, which makes him more unique and interesting to me. There are times where I felt it went to far such as Lucy destroying the piano, which makes the relationship seem more abusive. Besides that I think it does a good job of fleshing out Schroeder and Lucy’s character, but that’s just mine opinion.
Filmic Reviews and Isabella Cataldo I thought Schroeder may be asexual as well but there are definitely a few instances where he explicitly states he finds someone attractive (earliest example he says Lucy’s pretty) and times when he discusses desire to be married someday so neither asexual nor aromantic I’m thinking demiasexual and/or demiromantic. Also I’m a strong believer that Schroeder secretly likes Lucy and he can’t be without her annoying and relentless antics which is why I’m able to tolerate this trope. I believe in the future she’d be more annoying than aggressive tho but right now they’re both only 8.
@@filmicreviews3270 I don't think Schodwer is asexual he just wants to play his music in peace. *Lucy:* You aren't in love with me you must be asexual *Schroder:* Wait What?
I know how you feel. Creepy crushes are just that, they're creepy. But, as Filmic Reviews and Soren mentioned, it works here, mostly because they are kids so they can't fully grasp the concept of love yet. This one is endearing for me, though plenty are very annoying. I do believe Schroeder is aspec as well.
When you're a kid, you have crushes, or first loves. A lot of times things don't work out. There's a huge difference in a kid at 8, then at 18, and at 28. It's rare that you have childhood romances. Sometimes those are very special. Schroeder loves his craft. Lucy I don't think understands that.
he's the most relatable character to me in this show. i'm a lot like him. I even had a lucy once, and yeah, what you said about her easing off is totally true. being pushy does not help.

Lucy is one of my favorite characters she always gets the funniest lines. She is very sarcastic and bossy I love it. I also love the psychiatric booth. When you see that you know its going to be a good one.
According to the biographical book Schulz and Peanuts by David Michaelis, Schroeder's contentious relationship with Lucy was based on Charles M. Schulz's real life relationship with his first wife.
Honestly I’ve always hated characters that have a stalkerish and annoyingly persistent crushes on people for humor. If I like the person who has the crush ( in this case I don’t) i’d rather not have them spending all their time trying to aggressively get their object of affection to recuperate their feelings. I feel like it demeans a character. If I don’t like them, then I just feel bad for the person crushed on. It’s just one of my personal turn off’s.
It's a perfect foil for lucy The girl who usually usually gets away with being mean by threatening violence Having the one person she doesn't want to be mean to or put down Be mean to her One one hand it humanizes her more seeing her struggle like the rest of the kids Whilst also providing justice for the way she treats charlie brown and the other kids
In the beginning the original characters aside from snoopy are about 4 (Charlie Brown, Shermy, Patty) and later Schroeder is introduced as a baby and then a few months later Lucy is introduced as a baby but after Linus arrived and established himself as a toddler Shultz quickly started aging Lucy and Schroeder up along with everyone else to the age of 8 where they then stopped aging for the rest of the strip’s run
And it seems the same kind of happens with Linus (and maybe Sally as well) once Rerun is born and they're no longer the youngest. It does seem the characters' ages capped at 8 or so.
I've recently actually thought about these two's relationship and it's creepy and unhealthy. Lucy doesn't regard Schroeder's feelings and constantly destroys his stuff. He seems to only tolerate her and seems to kinda have a Stolkholm syndrome effect on him since Lucy constantly goes to talk to him. Disagree with me, this is just how I see it.
@@YHWHisEternal That's what i saw as a sort of Stolkholm syndrome effect. Not exactly it, but similar. He ends up missing Lucy even though she constantly destroys his things. It's just kinda weird to me

@@mediamementosofficial I’m surprised you didn’t talk about the time she threw his piano into the kite eating tree/ sewer or the time during 1978 where she kicked his piano while he has playing in an abusive manar
Look you can be romantic and say he likes her all you want but she annoyed him way too much and I think if they are gonna have a relationship then it’ll just be a friendship not Boyfriend Girlfriend type because she gave him no space at all everywhere he went she had to be there and I think it started to creep Schroeder out a lot and there is no way he can possibly love her more than be creeped out by her
schroeder does like lucy, true peanuts fans will know this. he kissed her once, he missed her when she left, in an early strip he called her cute. he’s also her assistant in the psychiatric booth which means they must spend time together outside of his piano-playing. he’s just caught up in his own head, fixated on playing his music and emulating the bachelor-life that his hero led. it’s also assumed by a lot of us that schroeder is on the autistic spectrum. when he’s annoyed with lucy, he lets her know; he’s blunt, and sometimes rude, but never unprovoked. when she’s being kind to him, he’s kind to her. he always listens, too, and usually doesn’t mind her company. but if she gets in the way of him and his special interest, he is unhappy. schroeder is a sweet, well-meaning boy with a crush that he doesn’t know how to handle. lucy, on the other hand, is more emotionally mature (as most girls are at their age) and also more assertive, so she doesn’t understand why he won’t reciprocate her confident advances when he indicates on occasion that he values her friendship and company, and also probably likes her too. neither of them are old enough to have fully developed empathy to the point where they can see into each other’s heads, so they don’t understand why the other doesn’t accomodate their feelings despite their mutual liking for each other. they love to different degrees and show affection in different ways. lucy seems adamant on physical touch and words of affirmation, and longs to find this in schroeder, while he is happiest with quality time and her compliant company, and can’t quite understand why this isn’t enough for her. in short, they’re kids, but i feel like they’d work it out. lucy would probably get bored of waiting on him as a teenager which would confuse schroeder and sort of role-reverse them, i think.
The problem is they never gave a good reason on WHY he should like her, she is shown many times that she’s hates his career choice and always disliked his piano playing. At one point she wanted him to end up in a skiing accident, he has no reason to tolerate her behavior at all, instead of the series pairing him up with someone who he could connect and play off of, instead they make him like the character that is known to be a mean spirited abusive bully. She’s not more emotionally mature, heck she is way less mature than Sally who is two years younger than her. She is a narcissist who cares about things going her way. There are many strips where he’s said he wanted to get married to a blonde girl, a girl who can cook him macaroni and cheese, and can play music with him. Not someone who should be dating someone with similar interests to her (like maybe another bully)
@@eds10blue79 well, i agree with you on most points. i think the key here is remembering that they’re kids. kids are impulsive and self absorbed by nature, they haven’t properly developed empathy and proper sensitivities yet and more concerned about themselves than those around them. they can’t help it. lucy reads as more selfish because she is more extroverted - she wants to engage with the other kids and can’t understand why they won’t drop what they’re doing and come join her. it’s a crucial developmental stage in childhood that isn’t properly refined until maybe age 11 or 12. schroeder is just as self absorbed, but he’s introverted and so it comes off less brashly. he wants to play his piano, end of, you know? lucy seems immature, but really i think she’s actually maturing fine, she’s just more outgoing than the others, and her impatience with them causes her to act out. the blonde girl anecdote ties into this, too. schroeder is clearly blond even in the comic strips, and so it’s a familiar hair colour, and he doesn’t need to venture far from his comfort zone to fathom himself with this fictional woman. he also says he doesn’t want to marry a lot, which is a contradiction, and proves that he really is just a kid and doesn’t know much about anything yet. as for the macaroni and cheese comment, he says this to lucy out of the blue, kind of insinuating that it’s something she would need to be able to do if he were to consider her as an option. as to why schroeder should like her, once again, they’re kids. people have silly crushes all the time when they’re kids and there’s no two ways about it. similarly, lots of kids hang out with other kids they don’t really even like, but that’s just how you work things out at that age. common interests and convenience and things like that. actually, lucy does at times seem quite interested in beethoven (even if only to impress schroeder), and he likes it when she’s not being silly about it. there are also a few occasions in strips where schroeder is the one to break the silence and offer her an interesting factoid about beethoven. he likes telling her about his interests because she’s the only person who’s always there and ultimately always going to listen, even if she does interrupt with a stupid remarks. you can pretty much make sense (i use this term loosely, it’s a comic strip) of everything with child psychology. it’s interesting, and i guess you don’t really have to read deeply into it, but that’s the beauty of peanuts. plus, it’s fun, haha.
I always thought Schroeder just tolerated Lucy, and that was it. Lucy loves him intensely, but Schroeder doesn't feel that way. I have to be honest I really don't like Lucy very much, and loved it when Schroeder would turn her down!

I think Schroeder likes Lucy. Maybe not as much as Lucy loves Schroeder, but I think the romantic feelings are reciprocated in some way. There's been proof over the years about how Schroeder thinks of Lucy in a positive light;
Example 1: When Schroeder jokes around with Lucy while she is supposedly "sleeping".
Sometimes her efforts might not be the best way to go about it, but still: the commitment is incredible!)
Example 2: When the Van Pelt family moved away.
It did feel forced an overdone at times
I liked when they spent a long time arguing over wether Santa Claus was real or not. 😂
There was one strip where she called him telling him she listens to Beethoven’s records, read his life story, got a post card from where he lived and found out about a museum there .
And Schroeder said “ it’s not proper for girl to call boy on phone”
And she auughhhed
Guess he can see through her best tactics lol
The funny thing is he already visited Bonn, Germany so she’s dumb to forget that
I thought that it was so goofy that in one strip, Schroeder told Charlie Brown that he thinks Lucy’s eyes are beautiful behind her back. But that they never focus, being the reason she can’t play baseball.
Glad to see someone do a video of them! I find their unrequited love dynamic the most fascinating in Peanuts. :)
The unrequited love stuff is so overdone
@@eds10blue79 Agreed. Lucy and Schroeder are the ones I truly enjoy though.
Except for Charlie Brown who everyone likes to make fun of (not just Lucy) and Linus for purposes of “normal” sibling fights, she usually has good intentions and is trying to be kind she just doesn’t know how and doesn’t understand the emotions of others.
omg I've seen you spam this everywhere
rii I didn’t “spam” any comment🙄 and it’s not like I got anywhere else to spread my Peanuts knowledge
Angel Skywalker u should definitely read them!!
@@Ladieboogie527 jeez i didnt mean it in a rude way, just like "wow i see you everywhere"
Also nobody cares about his music and gets made fun of it a lot of times for it
I agree 100% with everything you said !!! I loved this video, I’m a huge fan of the peanuts franchise too!

I think this relationship was based off of Charles Schulz' relationship with his first wife. Wanted him to focus on her instead of his cartoons.
Here’s the quick answer for everyone.... THEY ARE CHILDREN! They aren’t like us.... they don’t think like us. They aren’t the same age as us.
Very well said!
They did his character so dirty, he never got a happy ending

Oh Hi ♥️♥️♥️
Hello @@cupcakemuffins9444
@@therealcushandchefmonkeyshow what's up ☺⚘💟
I don't know if this is a personal bias or anything, but for the life of me, I have never understood why the "character has a creepy crush on another character to the point of stalkerish obsession" trope was supposed to be funny or entertaining in the first place.
In a way I agree
I know how you feel. Creepy crushes are just that, they're creepy. But, as Filmic Reviews and Soren mentioned, it works here, mostly because they are kids so they can't fully grasp the concept of love yet. This one is endearing for me, though plenty are very annoying. I do believe Schroeder is aspec as well.
Lucy: Hey, great news!
Schroeder: What?
Lucy: I have a crush on you.
Schroeder: Great. Now the Toyota Urban Cruiser...
THATS why Lucy is on the baseball team?!???!
Thanks for being in.
Schroeder did 1 time blush when Lucy told him he’s got pretty eyes so that’s something👌
he's the most relatable character to me in this show. i'm a lot like him.
I even had a lucy once, and yeah, what you said about her easing off is totally true. being pushy does not help.
I think Lucy can’t take a hint since Schroeder doesn’t like her back
He secretly does tho

Lucy wanting attention from Schroeder is Schulz’s wife wanting attention from him when he was trying to focus on his craft; cartooning.

No, there is never an animated moment where he does that
What about Sally Brown?
5:06 bruh I feel so bad for him here
Well don't get me started on the Time Lucy Threw Schroeder's Piano up into the Kite Eating Tree just so she can get him to be with her.
My theory is that Schroeder and Lucy would get together but they’d fight a lot and probably end up divorced
According to the biographical book Schulz and Peanuts by David Michaelis, Schroeder's contentious relationship with Lucy was based on Charles M. Schulz's real life relationship with his first wife.
since he got stuck at Beethoven‘s he is of course unfamiliar with the Wagnerian unconscious love.
I think Lucy’s chances with Schroeder are 50/50.
Why did I watch this???
9:27 bruh, l feel bad for snoopy here.
Same, the story ark where he misses her when she moves away was the dumbest choice, all it did was condone all the harassment she did towards him
"On paper, [Bernie] works." lol
Charlie Brown is the one who introduced Schroeder to Beethoven and the piano in the first place.
Lucy really sounds like Kyle from south park

Whilst also providing justice for the way she treats charlie brown and the other kids
She also there with her girls Frieda and patty on the team. Being terrible players n what not
Just adding
Lucy x Schroeder is the real OTP.
YES.
It’s overrated and very mean spirited
Very Cool!
I think that peanuts well end sadly 🤔 (peanuts did ended sadly )
LOOK OUT EVERYBODY! IM GOING TO BE CRABBY FOR THE REST OF THE DAY!,
That was in Play It Again, Charlie Brown. Originally in a 1969 cartoon.
Schroeder is my favorite-
I think that Lucy is not a good match for anyone because of the way she is...
Disagree with me, this is just how I see it.
i thought it was creepy until he missed her.

@@mediamementosofficial
I’m surprised you didn’t talk about the time she threw his piano into the kite eating tree/ sewer or the time during 1978 where she kicked his piano while he has playing in an abusive manar
Is it me or would people have a different opinion on this if the genders were reversed?
Well judging on how some People treat Pepe Le Pew, I'm gonna say yes.
I always thought Schroeder just tolerated Lucy, and that was it. Lucy loves him intensely, but Schroeder doesn't feel that way. I have to be honest I really don't like Lucy very much, and loved it when Schroeder would turn her down!
