    Bloomberg should do a statistical analysis of the correlation between the amount spent and the likelihood of winning an Oscar. That is, is there a correlation between spending more and having a greater likelihood of winning an Oscar?

      The problem is, as the video mentions, a dataset of money spent doesn't exist. The big studios presumably know what they spent, but not anyone else.
      You could compare the overall budget of the film, but that'd be skewed by the cost of production (which is inevitably going to be higher for superhero films vs. biopics...etc)

    • @posthocprior
      @posthocprior 10 місяців тому +4

      @@merrymachiavelli2041 Good points. You could simply pick of one metric that all advertising budgets use (say, print advertising). Also, a standard method to compare within groups in is either to use a normalized distance metric (eg, z score) or, if this isn't possible, use the ratio of the amount spent divided by the total spent to make the film.

    It costs millions to win a Oscar. You have to run a smart campaign that is very convincing and pitching those people to see your movie. Getting nominated is one of the biggest challenges as well.

      This is 100% not true, this whole documentary is not true. if it was true Barbie and so many others would have won a LOT more Oscars.

  • @alimfuzzy
    @alimfuzzy 10 місяців тому +25

    A lot of actors who have been nominated have said theyve lost work because they now command more money. Not sure how that works, maybe their agents stop accepting lesser paying roles or its just perception that they need more pay and dont offer roles to rhem.
    It's a double edged sword.

  • @jimysk8er

    how could they possibly rationalize a single academy member voting on a movie they haven't watched. That should be the bare minimum to even have your vote count for something. You are literally voting on an artistic media. You wouldn't expect a judge in a sculpture contest to base themselves off of the pamphlet at the giftshop!

    • @roadrollerdio565
      @roadrollerdio565 10 місяців тому

      The problem is the academy is full of working professionals-writers, actors, directors, cinematographers, vfx artists, production designers, editors and so on, so unlike a jury at a festival or film critics, it is literally not their job to be watching every movie that comes out for an award that doesn't pay them to do so in their spare time. It's just impractical.

    This whole argument is kind of proven false by the success of small movies at the Oscars. Moonlight, EEAO, The Whale, etc. All else equal, seems like small movies actually outperform the studios with huge budgets.

    • @cuffpen9803
      @cuffpen9803 10 місяців тому +6

      Really depends as there are many categories for which companies fight for from year to year. Letting some of the smaller films win within that spectrum is definitely possible as long as the companies get what they want.

      You also have to account the constant Diversity Pandering the Academy will do to especially in the last 5-10yrs to avoid critique of Bias and White Supremacy. Not saying that Non-white movies are not deserving but the lack of huge marketing budget is made up for by this many a times, especially recently.

      Those were small movies in terms of budget but the studios spend a lot on the Oscar marketing of those films. Sometimes a lot more than the budget. Similar case with Shakespeare in love

    watching all that award footage I am struck by the artificiality of it, it's just hilarious.
    The stars show up in broad daylite in tuxes and evening gowns wearing shades, the handlers and minimum wage assistants dress in whatever frumpy sack they can scare up second-hand, and the press and papparazi can't even be bothered with their sneackers, jeans and T-shirts.

      @@eldios831 Yes. It is a tough business (getting constantly personally rejected, and being always hunting for the next job). And there are thousands of amazing actors and editors, etc. out there.
      The way I see it, is you need to get lucky by being part of a popular production. Otherwise, you won't be noticed to the masses.
      As for awards, again, how do you choose in art? Is it the people that made the most expensive movies? Or the most watched? It isn't easy picking standards for art/entertainment.
      Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
      The methods mentioned in this video are all about exposure; getting as many people to see your work.
