I love the original five films and the weird TV show. I was home sick from school when I was about 12 (1988) and a channel was playing all five movies on a loop the entire day. I watched them over and over.
The PLANET OF THE APES films were allegorical satires about the two big no-nos in polite society that one is cautioned NEVER to discuss/argue about: Politics and Religion. It must've been a gas for Serling & Wilson (who both contributed to the 1st film's screenplay) to see Bible-beating evangelical Christians see the Deputy Minister of Justice -- the orangutan prosecutor Honorious -- state matter-of-factly "that the Almighty created the Ape in His own image" etc. And then this same talking orangutan derides Cornelius for having "advanced an insidious theory called 'Evolution'" (!) -- hoo-boy! THAT must have gone over well! When the sequel portrayed a neighboring society of Bomb-worshiping 'mutants' singing the praises of their 'god' in a blasphemous parody of the Roman Catholic Mass -- "May the blessing of the Holy Fallout descend on us all, this day and forevermore, Amen" -- well, I can only imagine how THAT must've gone over, especially amongst devout Catholics, let alone other Christian denominations. The POTA franchise -- especially the 5-film 'Classic' series -- has long been my favorite set of films.

Even the later ones really stand up ! The last one had a budget of 1.8 compared to nearly 6 for the first.
