Not sure exactly what you are doing. But if you want to preserve the original features and create a new feature, then you need to make sure you click first on the New Feature tab at the top of the tool. If you are doing that then most likely the new feature you created is sitting on top of the original features so you are unable to see them.
Thank you. I followed the steps shown in the video but the selected polygons have been disappeared when I merged them.

Where do your map and layout tabs go when you close them? Are they saved somewhere or are they completely gone when you close them?
They are located in the Catalog pane. Simply expand the Maps or Layouts folder in the pane and then right click on the map or layout you wish to open.
