    I just read in another comment that you've been only quilting for a year!!!!WOW!!! Fantastic work! I've had my longarm for five years and am so afraid to try something like this out! Thanks so much for the step by step instructions. It has given me the courage to try it on my own.

      frekybyrd , thank you and you are very welcome! Just give it a try. With a little practice, I am sure you'll do great.
      I drafted by hand with ink on Mylar for many years as a landscape architect, drafting with rulers and t-squares, so this came naturally to me. As I like to tell many people, I paid my penance in other forms! Have a fantastic day, and thank you once again.

    Good morning! I just got a Babylock Coronet and am LOVING IT! I am a newbie to quilting...but am "obsessed" (as my family says...lol) with it. I made 14 quilts in 12 months. Your work is gorgeous...amazing that you have just been doing for such a short time. I have purchased many classes on free motion quilting. Honestly, I have learned more by watching 3-4 of your UA-cam lessons, than all of the other well known instructors put together!! I am also just starting with rulers. Thanks for taking the mystery out of it. I am SURE your name will be with the "experts" soon. May God bless you richly with your enormous talent and all endeavors.

    Thank you so much for the easy way to figure out the math using a strip of paper. The math is what has always held me back from customizing borders. Your teaching method is exceptional. I have a longarm, the rulers, and a ruler table but I don't have the confidence yet to do anything other than computerized end-to-end. I'm going to take the time to use a practice piece to work on freemotion techniques. This will ultimately help with my freemotion pantos too.

      Thank you so very much for your kinds words. I'm sorry I didn't see your comment sooner, but I certainly hope you get the chance to give this a try and gain the confidence of being free to freemotion. I love your logon! I race karts and have for 32 years, doing the bulk of mechanics and data acquisition. I know you can do this!

      Vera Thompson , thank you. I had a number of people ask me to show this process, so I am happy that people can learn this. It really isn't too hard to make a custom border and I hope you give it a try. This borders was really something like 22 3/8"... something not easily divisible, but it was easy to work with using this method. Take care.

    • @thethreadworksfactory4781
      @thethreadworksfactory4781  7 років тому

      Vera Thompson , thank you for your very kind comments on another of my videos. While I saw it in an email youtube sent me, it didn't appear on UA-cam, so I could not reply.
      When I say, "honor the line", I mean to trying to go past it with a feather until, where you leave from the spine to start the next one, is close to that line. That allows you to save that space until it is needed...it keeps you from running out if room. I hope this makes sense! Take care.

    Your videos are so well done and easy to understand. The design you quilted looked quite complicated but you broke down the steps so I could follow what you were doing. I don't have a longarm (yet!) but when I am lucky enough to get one your tutorials will help me immensely. Thank you!

    Beautiful! Do you turn the quilt when doing a custom border? I assume you have to in order to fit the design correctly.

    • @thethreadworksfactory4781
      @thethreadworksfactory4781  7 років тому

      Tina Gordon , I mark my tops before they go on frame so that I know where things are going and how they will fit. I do usually turn the quilt for complex borders that have to flow. It takes me just 10 minutes to turn a quilt, so it’s worth it fir continuity. Thank you for you kind comments! Have a great day.

    Another wonderful video, this design is really gorgeous, but you broke it down into easily-digestible pieces, to make one think it's very "doable". Can I ask how long you've had a long-arm machine, before you were able to get to this level of confidence in FMQ and ruler work? Thanks again for making and posting your videos. ~Diana from Toronto

    • @thethreadworksfactory4781
      @thethreadworksfactory4781  7 років тому

      Diana, thank you...again! You are so kind. I actually started doing these things two months after starting onto the longarm. I had drafted by hand in my landscape architecture profession and I taught engineering graphics in college for many years, so much of this came very easily to me. As I tell people, I paid my penance in other forms!

    Hi! I am a new Innova owner. What threads you do find work deliciously well, for both top and bobbin for your machine? And can you share the name of the ruler you are using in this demo? Thanks so much, Amy

    • @thethreadworksfactory4781
      @thethreadworksfactory4781  6 років тому

      Amy Harry, congrats on your purchase. Innovas are awesome machines. You can use any thread in them. The ruler is from the quilted pineapple. You can find Linda hrcka online.

    I'm just curious, how side is your border; top to bottom. And I agree with everyone else. Your work is awesome and your instruction is as well. Thanks.

      @thethreadworksfactory4781  5 років тому +1

      Candace B, I’m sorry...I don’t understand your question. If you are asking how wide this piece is, I can’t tell you that, as I no longer have it. It was just an odd size. Thank you very much for your kind comment! Have a wonderful day.

  • @tamelascaggs1835
    @tamelascaggs1835 7 років тому

    You are a very good instructor! If the side quilt borders are not the same length as the top border, how do you recommend adjusting your pattern?

    • @thethreadworksfactory4781
      @thethreadworksfactory4781  7 років тому

      Tamela Scaggs thank you! I used to be a professor, so it's great to teach again!
      As you see from the final picture, my sides were shorter, so I divided those into 4 sections and used the same arc ruler. It looked just fine and yet the sides were quite different in total length. If the sides are close to the top and bottom in size, I cut a new strip and segment that into six segments. The size difference will not really matter. The fact that they fit is what will be cool.
      I hope this makes sense. Have a great day!

      Lise Taber, thank you for your kind comment! I've only longarmed for about a year total, so I know your path. It's not so hard when you understand things just a little. This border was something like 20.35" wide. Tough dimension, but simple this way!
      To answer your question, I used rulers from the quilted pineapple. Fantastic arc rulers! Love them! Hope you have a great day!
