If you're surprised that speed limits weren't introduced until 1901, you should know that it wasn't common to even have a car until the 1920s. If you had a car in 1901, you were seriously rich.
The cars in those days were rare, were slow and the roads were not conducive to fast rates of speed. Also people tended to be more practical and sensible. More people applied common sense. These days everything is choking or a poisoning hazard.

It’s hard to stop putting your hand there when you go from manual to automatic, the PRNDL becomes a hand rest, specially if you still own other manual car that you also drive regularly
Fun fact: in Germany, the main freeway "A1" has no speed limit on some parts of it, which means you can drive as fast as you safely can. But the important part is "as safely as you can", because if you’re driving at speeds where you don’t have complete control, it’s illegal to drive at that speed, because that’s considered reckless driving, which is a different matter than speed limits altogether. And of course, be aware that not the entire freeway is unrestricted, some parts have 130 km/h, which is the generally recommended speed when traveling in a restriction free zone. Of course, if there’s road work being done, there can be temporary speed limits put up, even in the restriction free zone, so you always have to be prepared to break at a moments notice. (Also, if the weather conditions make it unsafe to drive at faster speeds, for example if the road is wet from rain or if visibility is low because of snow or fog, it’s important that you keep the speed tailored to the weather conditions, as you have 4 times the breaking distance per 10 km/h you’re driving. So if you’re driving at 130 km/h, you have to multiply that by 4.)
