  • A main function of EMS is responding to disasters. A disaster is any calamitous event that causes or has the potential to cause injury or death, destruction, and distress. A disaster can be man-made or natural. Disasters overwhelm EMS and community resources because critical infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed.
