One of the greats - including his later works - The Assistant at ATV - Egg adverts - even moments from his 1968 series - a thinking comic actor - I would love to have chatted with him
"What happened last night ?" A very eerie prophecy into Tony's final three years. Ultimately he brought the spiralling descent in chaos, and finally death onto himself.
The man was dying from a deadly disease that engulfed him eventually, just like all diseases will if left untreated. Furthermore this was witnessed by a public, many of whom would also be in denial themselves of having this potentially fatal disease. May he Rest In Peace
The man was dying from the disease of addiction, in his case alcohol was his drug of choice. Other people use drugs, food, gambling or sex. The disease is as old as the human race as is the denial that the disease even exists. May he Rest In Peace
Despite the booze, he was an intelligent and funny comedian. His decline from approximately 1963 to 1968 was very public. Luckily, he left us hilarious radio and television shows written by Galton and Simpson that are still played today on the BBC.
Should have gone into character drama parts, would have been good doing more serious, darker stuff, like a lot of classic Brit comedians eventually did.
Breaking up with Gorton & Simpson was a huge mistake, one he truly regretted the rest of his life. His ITV shows were pretty dire simply because he didn't have them around & he became more beligerent as a result of his heavy drinking.I think everyone prefers to remember him pre - 1962.
I think he's drunk.. Just a bit too relaxed, and slightly slurred speach ... Such a shame. As a youngster, I listened avidly to H-H-H-Hancock's Half Hour.
Hancock didn't like the character that had brought him fame, he wanted to move on but he was never satisfied, he wanted to leave his past behind but once the drink got him it was all downhill..sad , but many comedians had problems with the bottle.
A little the worse for wear. If he had followed Sid James and Kenneth Williams into the Carry On films, he could have gone to as much success as them. But he was too much of a comedy snob.
Oh Tony....morose......regretful......full of grog.......of course you regretted splitting up with Ray and Alan. He did Gogol's The Government Inspector. It was great. He should have gone in that direction, not to trying to write The Punch and Judy Man. And his ATV series was dire.....because he didn't have Galton and Simpson, refused to learn his lines and was boozing while working.
He didn't refuse to learn his lines, he suffered from stage fright his entire career, and following a car accident which prevented him from learning his lines for a show he switched to cue cards, also his growing alcohol intake heightened his stage fright. It was a vicious circle.
@@diverguy3556 The first show he did with cue cards was The Blood Donor as only days before he had suffered concussion in a car crash. He completed the series using them and believed he could always get away with it.

....you seem to have quite an insight into what happened to him...very illuminating...thanks!
This is so unbelievably sad. And he is obviously pissed as well, which doesn't help.

Alcoholism and I imagine severe depression
@@petesemaj He could not accept his homosexuality.
So crazy the way they're both smoking - how times change.
Hancock's father had died of lung cancer in his 40s.
He aged about 20 years since face to face in 1960, so sad to see

If only he hadn't made such poor decisions 😕
My comedy hero.

This contains a part, the paper seller anecdote, which a fuller video on here, which I thought was the whole interview, didn't contain.
I still like the way he took the paper-sellers view much more to heart than the critics.

A great comedy actor ,who was a very poorly man who couldnt cope with what was going on in his head
Sad. The interview he did on one 2 one was sad also..
I think his brother said he should never have done it. It was what started the self doubt and decline.
The search for comedy perfection killed him
Hancock made the most stupid decision to sack the writers who made him! It was downhill for him ever since.
what have you done
Was the worse thing he ever did. He was lost after. They never knew why he did it either

as Sid james said, he got rid of me, then he got rid of his writers, then he got rid of himself
Spike Milligan said that.
Send away the tigers
He was pretty much drunk everywhere at this time...!
He was ill
Hancock is a shadow of his former great self.
he was ill
He was obviously very drunk here.
