Especially later in life. It’s not like they are in their teens or twenties getting through things first together. Sounds like a dishonest marriage all around. Sad and maddening.
People are taught foolish things in childhood. My mother told me never to question a man about money, it makes you look like a gold digger. She said don't ask for a prenump, that means you're planning on a divorce and asking a man for his credit report before marriage shows you don't trust him and he will probably break up with you. I married three financial disasters before I learned my lesson.
You need a full audit before marriage. What do you make, owe, spend, have invested, etc. If you have tons of debt, no savings, & nothing planned for retirement it’s an instant no.
If she decides to divorce him she won’t be liable for the debts he had before they were married. Just like she won’t have any claim to the house he owned before they were married.
I can feel Daves frustration because she isn't making any sense. She is trying to not admit she should have asked and inquired as to what his financial situation was. Who marries someone without maybe having a conversation about their financial situation?
I think it's reasonable to assume you're not marrying someone with a MILLION dollars in debt they've never thought to mentioned before. Give me a break. This guy knew what he was doing and scammed her big time. You don't seriously think he would've told her the truth, do you?! He would've had some fancy way of evading a complete picture until he had her locked down and financially liable for his mess. He knew about all of this the entire time and kept that from her while presenting himself as doing well in that area. I seriously doubt he had any sincere intention of this marriage lasting, you know your partner is going to feel wildly betrayed that you kept that from them until after the fact. Everything about this feels like a con job on his part.
@@thestorybehindthat5236 Yep, and somehow got a half million dollar loan with nearly a quarter million in CC debt which tells me he's doing something to hide his liabilities from the bank. This guy is probably a financial audit away from serving time in prison.

This guy has over 1 million in debt meanwhile I can’t even get approved for a starter home with NO debt making 150k as a single guy.. who’s this guy banking with?!
Any time I'm feeling stupid about a financial situation that I was in, I listen to these podcasts and that feeling quickly goes away. Her not wanting to work after getting married was a big red flag. Look ma, my meal ticket has arrived. Jokes on you, lady!
People, please do pre-marital counseling BEFORE getting married. The dating stage is always deceptive. Life is not cute and sparkly and sunshine and rainbows... Ask the hard questions. Have the uncomfortable conversations. Never assume or say "things will change later once we're married", you're in for a surprise. Be 101% intentional about the beautiful but long road of marriage ahead. Prepare, or fail and divorce later.
People laugh at me every time I mention premarital counselling. Of course it's usually the non-believers and usually because the only thing that differentiates them from a married couple is a marriage certificate 😢.
I can understand a few thousand dollars in debt but 1 million is absolutely ridiculous! I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night owing that much money. 🤦🏽♀️ smh!
If he just bought a $500k house, then his credit is good. For him to qualify for that house while having another house with a $330k mortgage on it tells me he is still in good standing. Why do 2 people need a huge half a million dollar house? They need to sell everything and buy a small condo and live below their means and pay off all their debt. With income in excess of $200k, they should be debt free relatively quickly.
Somehow, this guy convinced a bank to give them a half million dollar loan while he already owed a half million dollars to others. I suspect that this financial deception is a lot bigger than just fooling her, because there is no way that would have been approved if they knew the true state of his finances.
Had the same thought. There are so many women calling into this show wanting or having quit their jobs, including a doctor who had accumulated (though I think mostly paid off) a lot of debt for school. Idk I wouldn’t do that under any circumstances. You never know what the future holds, and we’ve seen that on this show too.
Always find this kind of stuff out while you're dating. NEVER after swapping rings and I do's. Or after making babies (which ideally comes after the rings and I do's).
“The level of denial and deception” needs to be dealt with…He’s obviously still grieving his deceased wife…and he’s, indeed, a financial train wreck and should do better by his new wife…but she definitely shouldn’t act surprised at this point…that’s wild…I’m hopeful they can iron everything out from this point on…
Maybe they should have the marriage annulled if still within the deadline. Both if them are together for the wrong reasons, and I'm not entirely sure going by the snippet here, that love and mutual respect was part of the package. Remember the man's deceased wife as only been dead two years at the time of this phone in. Both married under clouds of illustration - she wanted to be taken care of, he wanted someone to co-sign loan and more CC documents, and maybe clear his debts.
Sounds like she just married him for money. she said it herself, he was suppose to be her retirement plan and now she’s mad that he “looked” rich and is actually poor. she deserves all of this non-sense
Guy has a 6 figure job and owned a $300,000 rental property. Somehow he hid a quarter million worth of CC debt from the mortgage lender on the second house, which we can tell because there is no way they'd have let that slide without a lot of very probing questions. I think this guy is doing something to hide his money and Dave is being either too polite or too self-righteous to make the connection.
@@thecactusman17 I mean, you could be right, but I wouldn’t be so fast to assume. mortgage lenders are more than happy to approve you for way more than you can afford. Sounds like someone I know. I have a friend that saved money to retire early. She met a man online; they married soon after. It was then she decided to find out about his finances. Turns out, he had unstable employment. Has no money, was living in a room in a friend's house. Had such bad credit, he couldn't get a loan for a candy bar. Had no insurance. Had an old car that needed repair, but he didn't have the money. This friend bought 'them' a house with her money, hoping he would get it together. She bought him a new car so he could find a job and get to work. That is currently where that story is right now. I think she is hoping he will find a job, make lots of money fast and they will live happily ever after. They are both in their 50s and its each their second marriage. He blames his ex-wife for his situation, and she does too.
Hard to believe in this day and age people still get married without doing a financial background check on the person they're marrying. If you are engaged to be married, spend money on a background check before spending money on the wedding. Look at each other's credit report, W2's, bank statements, income tax returns, is their lease or property in Mom's name, etc. Look deep before you leap.
When I was first dating my husband, I was straight forward with him (on the 2nd date). I told him I wanted to be a homemaker as soon as we had children together if we were to get married. I wanted to raise our children full-time and I wanted him to provide financially 100%. If he couldn't do that, then we would not work out. He proposed 3 months later. I'm now a stay at home wife/mother. Been married for almost 5 years, with 2 children (boy and girl).

Prepare, or fail and divorce later.
our pre-marital counseling had nothing on finances - which is a huge mistake for the churches etc who do the counseling
@@aschulte7502what? Really? My church definitely discusses finances, and in depth!

They live in Anchorage, $500k is a starter home. In my area $500k get's you a mediocre 3 BR on a postage stamp sized lot.
A 500K house is not huge in many areas of the country. It's just a very basic home.

She's 45 and doesn't want to work anymore. It's as simple as that.
I had the same question like did she just want to quit because she thought he was wealthy? At 45 I’m guessing it’s not because she has little kids.
yeah that got me... she's 45 years old, no mention of kids either...

I can’t remember seeing a video that shocked Jade to such a high degree; these two were great to help her with this call!
I guess wisdom doesn't necessarily come with age 😢.
