    To clarify regarding the "scheduling the murders" thing, Light scheduling people to be murdered in advance wouldn't help clear him. They can gauge by the time those people were reported in the media when Kira would have access to them. As of episode 3, the investigators are already aware that Kira is able to control the time of death and schedule their murders at specific times, so people continuing to die after Light's confinement on its own wouldn't clear him of suspicion. This is also why Light did the potato chip maneuver in episode 8 and intentionally killed people who were reported at the time his TV and computer were both off.
    The only way Light can clear himself is to be confined but have people who were only just reported on at the time of his confinement be murdered since Kira would need to have seen them during or after the time he kills them. It's a technique used in a lot of murder mysteries too where a killer will set up a murder remotely and secure an alibi at the time the victim dies. It doesn't really matter that the killer was "accounted" for at that time when you know they could have just scheduled for them to die earlier. They started to change their mind not because people stopped dying but because newly reported people only mentioned in the media after Light's confinement (when he had no way to schedule their murders) would clear him.
    Also appreciate your perspective on Misa. She's one of the most consistently despised characters in the entire show, so it's honestly refreshing. I'd even make the case that a lot of Light's mindset and childish view of criminality is shaped by his father. He's overstepped the law multiple times himself now, pulled a gun and threatened to kill a man he felt "deserved" to die to threaten him into giving him the TV Tapes, and even in talking about the possibility of Light being Kira his first thought is to kill his son and himself rather than interrogate what kind of circumstances would lead his son to think that killing people would make the world a better place (or more realistically, to stroke his ego, satiate his boredom, and rationalize the fact that he murdered people).

    Now we get to see what I like to call, "reverse character development". Since we never really saw Light without the Death Note's influence we get to see what he was like prior, which helps inform his character growth to Kira. This is the nail in the coffin to anyone who calls Light a "sociopath", he isn't, and we see that in how Light acts without the Death Note; he is an upstanding, caring, and lawful person. "Light" vanished when "Kira" was born, and "Kira" then sometimes had to play the role of "Light, Chief Yagami's son". Just like Soichiro said, the true evil is the power to kill, and those who have that power are cursed. Yet even after people watch this arc, they still call Light a sociopath, showing that they not only didn't get the point of this arc, but also failed to understand the message of Death Note.

    • @jpcsdutra
      @jpcsdutra 8 днів тому

      I would beg to differ. Light is startled and confused because he got memory wiped and thrown into hostility, and he's playing exactly what anyone in that situation would play. He's back to playing good kid because it's the weapon he had then and is back to having.
      He also can't be a caring, upstanding and lawful person if day 1 with a gun he's trying the gun out on people. It happened once, and it happens again. Kira wasn't a happy coincidence, it was what happens when you give a sociopath an outing.

      @@jpcsdutra I'll give him that Light might've been a productive member of society if he'd never encountered the death note, but that's kinda where my charity ends. Misa like was mentioned has actually gone through the shit that light claims to be trying to solve, but he doesn't give a shit about her and ultimately manipulates her to assist him in his self appointed crusade. In contrast Light had literally no problems, and takes up the task of "ridding the world of evil" immediately upon getting the power to do so.
      You could argue that he might be trying to do a bit of shielding his ego from the effects of his first murders by justifying it and then after that just gets wrapped up in the situation, but even that I think is a lot of charity for a guy who basically accidentally killed two dudes, freaked out and then immediately was like "Fuck it I'm god now,".
      When he loses his memory and reverts to be "innocent" you have to realize that for him he's like "Wtf am I doing? I didn't do any of this shit?!" and then immediately gets cleared by the machinations he's orchestrated. So once he's free his number one priority is likely just the fact that he wants to clear his own name and he's already intended to become a member of law enforcement anyway so chasing down "Kira" is very reasonable, but I don't think it speaks much to his morality. It's just the sort of thing anyone would do in this situation. He ONLY errs on the side of good because he *doesn't remember* that he had the ability to do it through the force of murder. Being a good detective is the best way to make his "good and just world". That's the real difference between the two personas. Light thinks the same things about criminals but he can only do his best as law enforcement to try and fix that. Kira knows about a supernatural ability and immediately scraps that idea for a far more grim method.

    • @jpcsdutra
      @jpcsdutra 7 днів тому +1

      @@Ruritsu Well yeah, I think my main point is that the Kira personality isn't as causal as Light apologists say it is.
      It's not a slippery slope, it's something that is there full-fledgedly as soon as he confirms he has the means to enable it.
      It's not that it doesn't get worse, it definetly does, it's just that it didn't "come about", it was always there, all it needed was means.
      I get the argument that absolute power corrupts absolutely, but you can't call Light good with as many stopping points he had to change his mind over things (His one passional attempt at anything was at the fake L on the news, driven by ego, everything before or since was premeditated). Even this very episode he gives himself the perfect outing after creating a mythical creature that would change the structure of his society for a good decade or more, and he doesn't take it permanently.
      Of course I can't have any evidence of what if scenarios that the authors would come up with, as of course Light isn't a real person; but as a detective he would never get to L's level; and as a lawyer he'd for sure be one to defend scumbags or prosecute innocent people because of a hunch. He's the exact kind of person to plant evidence if he was a cop. I say that based entirely on his personality.
      The glimpses we do have of actual Light in this show is of a ticking timebomb and I have mentioned this in another episode. He's way too formal with his own family even for a japanese person; he's good enough to be a professional athlete but gave up on it for better grades; he ignored puberty for his own grades; not once in this show he shares a single happy family memory. His dad is a harsh punitive figure that holds him to an extreme moral and academic standard. In the real world he'd be the kind of person one bad day away from appearing on the news for some attempts at really grim stuff. If Light has empathy (which I doubt) it is so extremely beyond damaged.

    Just finished the reaction and watching the outro now. I would love to talk about your thoughts currently on Misa (not as a debate but moreso a discussion off of the insight you have of her) but I'm gonna wait for a few episodes as not to spoil anything coming up, but it's a very interesting viewpoint you have on her.
    I admittedly typically dont hear many people gripe at others about why some condemn Light but give Misa more insight on her history, but hear more about when people condemn Light but give L a pass, such as where they say what Light is doing is wrong and evil, but then people bring up the gray area of L's tactics, such as having someone stand in his place to basically get killed on live TV or allowing torture methods to be used on Misa after she was captured.
    It's always great to have these discussions with people viewing Death Note for the first time. (Obviously provided that disagreements dont get overly heated)

    • @DrSophieDarlingReacts
      @DrSophieDarlingReacts  8 днів тому +4

      I can absolutely make a note to discuss this more in depth after a few more episodes, but yes I absolutely see L as the same as Light. He's willing to sacrifice everyone if it means capturing Kira which makes him no different to Light being willing to sacrifice everyone to evade capture. They're two sides of the same coin but working for different ends, which is why it's so fascinating to watch them especially when L is very obvious about how similar he is to Kira in the earlier episodes saying that he is also childish and hates to lose. Gives a great indication as to just how far he's willing to go especially the psychological duress Misa was placed under which 100% infringes upon human rights acts. I should have discussed that in my outro but I was just gunning for the next episodes haha!!

    Misa is a monster made by circumstance, light is just a monster. The only thing keeping him from doing evil was the absence of a power like the death note. It enabled him. Misa is for sure broken. It doesn't excuse her willingness to kill basically anyone without a second thought.

      What circumstances? Literally, every victim of theirs has family. They don't go and become killers. As soon as she got power, she instantly used them to make another killer like her and help him. She's a monster, too

    • @DrSophieDarlingReacts
      @DrSophieDarlingReacts  8 днів тому +2

      What I think Smugsaber is saying is that Misa is a monster by circumstance due to the trauma she's experienced and it has warped her perspective to the extent that she idealises Light and will do anything for him even going as far as to kill innocents and inflicting upon them the same experience she had in having her family die. Psychologically speaking the trauma she's gone through has created a monster. Though there is no way of knowing if she would have been that way without the Death Note as we are starting to see in Ep 17 through Light. A glimpse into who he would be without the corrupting influence of the Death Note.
      The show seems to be emphasising just how corrupting the Death Note can be in that it plays on the darkest aspects of our psychology and also preys on innate greed for power and control. Which is very fascinating to watch.

You should be condemning them both because they are both committing horrible acts against innocent people. It's been a while since I've seen the show and read the books, but I don't remember something being super explained; and I know it's kinda weird for this to be the place for me to start splitting hairs about how magic works, but the magical amnesia part of it kinda bothers me a bit.
    The rules say that you forget the Death Note, and it says nothing about giving you supplementary memories or additional context clues or nothing. The amnesia on Misa would be confusing, but on Light it would be a flatout terrifying case of almost dementia. He *lived* the Death Note this past few months, and he would now blank out on the entirety of the past semester outta nowhere, because I'm positive he spent more than half of the day thinking about either the killings or how to revert the investigation. Not only that but his entire behaviour would change from night to day because of intentionality. While this entire thing could be a huge push up for his alibi; if he got questioned on literally anything else that happened the past semester that would be an entire new can of worms to dig through with him. Heck, he should have zero memory of Misa because he didn't have a single interaction with her where he wasn't freaking out about her or her use of the Death Note and how that would impact him using his.
    Either way I'm sure there's probably something about it that I'm forgetting, but weird nonetheless.
    And about not being able to remove people from the list once they're written down; fun piece of trivia:
    Before they get serialized, most manga get their chance at having a pilot (one-shot or not) to impress publishers and try to win popular votes; if they do get picked up they can go through massive changes in order to become both more pleasing and company appeasing, and a lot of writters are assigned editors that can have huge impacts on how the stories end up being shaped. Death Note's pilot is flat out bizarre, and its tone couldn't be more different. But what I want to bring up is that the pilot actually had something called a "Death Eraser" that was one special eraser that could undo anything written in the book (and yes, it could also revive people).

  • @harrymillar4193
    @harrymillar4193 8 днів тому +2

    No, even a Shinigami can’t stop a death once it’s been written. You could stop someone from physically writing the name, but that’s it. If it’s in the book absolutely nothing can be done. Even if the conditions aren’t fulfilled or fully written out, they’ll just die of a heart attack in 40 seconds as scripted.
    However, (this doesn’t appear in the anime at all, but it was originally a concept shown in the pilot manga so spoiler warning if you plan on reading that): There was originally going to be a Death Eraser, which would remove ink from the Death Note. This would not only stop a death, but could also ressurect someone as long as they were A.) Killed by the Death Note and B.) Hadn’t been cremated
    IIRC, the Death Eraser was left behind because the author wanted permanence to be a theme (kinda loses tension if one could just undo an action they have done in a story like this).

    • @harrymillar4193
      @harrymillar4193 8 днів тому

      @ It was cool in that story but there are several anime that have revive mechanics and it really does just suck any and all tension from the story. The key example of this is DragonBall; you bring the 7 balls together and you will be granted any wish you want. Big heroic sacrifices and significant character deaths are all pointless because you can just revive them in the next season. Granted, there was a lot of fun in seeing characters journey to actually get the DragonBalls so they can revive someone, but after the fiftieth time they did it, it kinda just became ‘meh’.

    Speaking about Misa:
    I agree 100%
    Many people don't give enough credit for her character's complexity.
    She is a traumatized 19yr old girl who recently witnessed her parents being murdered and survived a murder attempt herself. Of course she isn't mentally stable. Who would be?
    People call her stupid...but really 🤨?
    Comparing ordinarily people to geniuses like L and Light?
    It's easy for someone to say that they would act much smarter than Misa, when they know the plot and if they didn't go through the same trauma 😑
    I would say that she is a very well written character.
    A character doesn't have to be a hero, a genius or be rational and mentally stable to be interesting.
    I don't agree with what she is doing, same as I don't agree with what Light is doing.
    But while Light decided to play God because he felt bored and privileged, Misa actually has a motive to want criminals dead.
    I enjoy watching two very different death note owners, they create fascinating character dynamics.
    I in fact find it quite interesting, how despite having a clear motive to murder criminals, she is also much more willing to murder absolutely anyone who stands in her or Light's way, while Light would have a second thought about doing so, but not because he cares about justice, he only cares about his/Kara's social image.
    While the only thing Misa cares for is being with Light, who she idolized.
    Misa is a chaotic evil who makes everyone's lives more complicated, everyone's including her own allies.
    Y'all have rights to sew me for my opinion, but I enjoy watching her doing soo.

    Light is worse without a doubt morally than Misa. Misa is not just using the death note to protect herself though. She murdered cops and innocent people on broadcast to meet her idol which is pretty messed up. No problem in finding her more interesting either. Light is my favourite Character and he needs fire and brimstone. The moral bastion in Death Note is Chief Yagami and I'm meh on him.

      @DrSophieDarlingReacts  8 днів тому +2

      Yeah I think we are all unfortunately meh on Chief Yagami. He's just not as fun haha! Bad arse but not as interesting as Light, L, and Misa.
      Yes - she does not always use it in the best of ways but initially we have to presume, before Kira came into the picture, that she was using it very minimally and most likely as a form of protection. However, her killing innocent people is why I say she's as bad as Light in her actions haha!!

    • @TheMilkMan8008
      @TheMilkMan8008 8 днів тому +1

      I'd argue she's worse. Light has a plan, and getting caught would ruin that plan. In his mind, the world would be worse off if he couldn't kill criminals anymore. People who want to stop him are just as bad. That's delusional and evil, but Misa JUST wants to meet someone she idolizes. She didn't have a plan to help the world. She just wanted to help her idol. She couldn't care less what his goals were.

    • @DrSophieDarlingReacts
      @DrSophieDarlingReacts  8 днів тому +1

      @@TheMilkMan8008 I agree to an extent because we have to remember that the reason she idolises him is because Kira punished the man who murdered her parents in front of her. Psychologically speaking that would mess with anyone coupled with the fact that she nearly died herself at the hands of a stalker. Feeling disempowered leads people to do crazy things. Her behaviour is just as bad as Light's but I don't think we can ignore how trauma frames her perspective and behaviour towards Kira. It's not just idolisation for the sake of it but because Light's actions gave her justice and made her feel empowered which drove her to start enacting the same behaviour. I don't think we can just summarise it down to "Misa bad because she only does this because she idolises him" but have to look deeper at what she's experienced and how that drives / motivates her actions.
      Both of them are equally as bad in my eyes because Light's use of the Death Note is solely to stroke his own ego and desire to be a God. What started off as a way to rid the world of crime very quickly became corrupted due to greed and lust for control/power. It's why this show fascinates me so much because it is psychologically complex and we're supposed to question all the characters we come into contact with even those that the show attempts to portray as 'good' like L 😊

    • @TheMilkMan8008
      @TheMilkMan8008 8 днів тому +1

      @@DrSophieDarlingReacts For sure. I don't see how people think you were condoning her behavior. Especially since the entire show is super interesting. Each character makes you think about and question your own morals. My only issue is that a lot of people see people they love die and don't then become killers without hesitation to meet the killer who killed their killer..? Man, that's a mouthful to get out. I can completely understand that the death note is super corrupting. Getting that kind of power would corrupt most people. She didn't just go after criminals, though. She wanted to meet an idol and kill without second thought. She was willing to kill innocents and even did to get to him. This isn't to diminish her psychological damage or to say she isn't a victim, but she isn't really driven by a goal you could argue is justified. You can somewhat see how people might think Lights goal is justifiable, but not Misas. It's awesome when a show makes you think this much about the morality of things.

    I think I’m one of the referenced commenters who were mentioning how Misa is as guilty as Light 😅 I also left several comments saying how Light is evil though, and I never mentioned or eluded to any gender issues 😅
    I just understand why people with less life experience can idolize Light and believe he’s idealistic and everything he does is for “the greater good”. I felt like that when I was much younger. Now I kind of laugh at my younger self for thinking he’s anything other than an egotistical narcissistic maniac 😅
    And of course Misa is a damaged individual, and it makes a lot of sense to feel more bad for her. In a way though, if you believe that finding a Death Note is a curse, then Light is also very unfortunate. After all, you can see how his character without the death note flips to the moral antithesis of his Kira persona.
    I believe we can condemn people’s actions, while also understanding their circumstances and sympathizing with them. If we switch places between the judge and the person being judged, no one can tell if things would be different.
    Sorry for the long comment 😅

      @AhmadSammy I can confirm that you are not haha!! Because you actually see them both as equally bad rather than praising one as superior to the other 😊
      My reference was more to comments that I had to remove which were just straight up disgusting in how they spoke about Misa in that they were using degrading language so don't worry! You definitely don't fall into that!

    13:46 I was agreeing with your assessment of the people in your comments up until labeling it as misogynistic. You could just be less biased and label it as a difference in opinion instead of bigotry. I see both sides.
    The fact you label it as misogyny instead of difference of opinion ignores the perspective that even if Light has a god complex, he is still trying to make the world a better place by judging criminals harshly. Where Misa can be seen as using the Death Note in only purely selfish ways that she has been shown to do. She’s only used the Death Note in ways that she can leverage to make her personal life better by getting closer to Kira. Which can be seen as less noble than creating a world without crime.
    The fact you’re trying to justify Misa’s actions while citing gender can invite criticism of you being misandrist. Just like how you are criticizing behind the label of misogyny.
    How about just call a difference of opinion just “a difference of opinion” without calling your audience bigots?

    • @DrSophieDarlingReacts
      @DrSophieDarlingReacts  4 дні тому +4

      @Supergh0stTV I didn't call my audience bigots. You've entirely twisted what I said without actually listening.
      I was referring to the comments that I had received on videos regarding Misa and the misogynistic statements made about her.
      You're putting words into my mouth that I did not say because you've somehow become offended at a point that didn't even apply to you?
      I also never said that people couldn't find Light fascinating. More my point is they share similarities and the people criticising Misa were overlooking that to slate her for being a woman. Hence it became less about liking a character and more a misogyny issue. You can dislike Misa without being misogynistic about it. That's my point.
      I never once said "all my viewers that like Light are misogynists" - I would never dare to make such an assumption nor would I reduce people to that. If you had actually listened to what I said without taking it as a personal attack then you'd know that's not the point I was making.
      Did you also miss the point where I said both of their actions should be condemned and we should remove the gendered aspect and look more at their backstory? Considering my entire PhD was in masculinity studies I am far from a misandrist.
      I'm actually disgusted at how you've put words into my mouth that I never said and would dare think that I'd call my audience bigots. If you aren't going to critically listen to the point I'm making and instead want to take it personally than that speaks more to you than it does to me, because I in no way called my audience bigots. I did not say that people who liked Light were misogynistic. Nor did I say that Misa's actions were justified or use gender as a way to justify. I talked about her as psychologically fascinating and the writing in reference to gendered violence as a motive for a characters behaviour.
      In the same way I have also talked about Light being psychologically interesting. Again, you failed to understand that Misa's actions are bigger than just wanting to meet Kira. It's rooted in trauma which so many people overlook. It's not that simple a reduction.

    • @Supergh0stTV
      @Supergh0stTV 4 дні тому +2

      @ just using the label of “misogynistic” to refer to comments about people who favor Light over Misa is divisive enough. Unless you want to actually quote examples of something “misogynistic”, it comes off as just calling people you disagree with as being bigots. I don’t even mind if you want to call people bigots, I just don’t agree with it unless you actually showcase what exactly you’re calling out as being bigotry. Yes, I listened to the whole thing. I’m not discounting any of the other points you’re making which is why I said I mostly agree with you. I just pointed out what I disagree with and why.
      The entire point I’m making is what you referred to as misogyny was very vague and came off as only a difference in opinion and I did not see any example of misogyny from what you spoke about. I’m not saying it doesn’t exist, only that I can’t endorse your messaging about misogyny with the information you provided during that whole section of the video. I still enjoy your videos and tbh, it’s not that big of deal. No one is going to agree 100% with another person. That’s what makes people and reaction content so great. I’ve watched you since the beginning and will continue to enjoy your content. I was just throwing this out there cause maybe you can see where I’m coming from given that your audience interacts with your content differently than yourself. You obviously have more attention paid to your comment section than we do.

      @Supergh0stTV I can see where you are coming from but I also don't keep all the comments saved either as I remove them due to how disgusting they were. My issue is not the audience hence why I never said "everyone who likes Light is a misogynist" - it was more a broader point that what I had seen was very much rooted in that in how they spoke of Misa.
      I will agree that I could have been more specific but I think jumping the gun and believing I'm speaking about my entire audience is wild, especially as I've had some very insightful conversations with people about Light and have even spoken myself about how I find him fascinating.
      Again - you can dislike or like a character without feeling the need to be a misandrist or misogynist in how you speak or describe another.
      I will apologise for my comment coming across as aggressive solely because I hate when words are put into my mouth. Especially considering my academic work has always been focused on men and masculinity as I find it more interesting and under researched than feminist theory. I have a lot of love for men and I don't care who their favourite character is, but I'll not abide by misogynistic statements.
      Difference in opinions is always going to happen but if you had seen what I had? Yeah not difference in opinion. Trust me on that! 😅

      @ and I totally get that. No worries! I think you’re very attentive and intelligent, and I look forward to any disagreements we may have in the future. After all, consistently challenging your own beliefs and opinions is how you can arrive to the most prudent and unbiased viewpoint. So that’s why I hate buzzwords cause they are usually used to dismiss the substance of a discussion and it’s a way to emotionally appeal to a point instead of using rational thought processes. I’m not saying that’s what you did, only why I might have came off too hot in my original comment.
