  • Billion Dollar Flower Market | Business Documentary from 2016
    The Flower industry is a billionaire global business. The Netherlands is the world’s most advanced flower producer and controls the market. Nearly all of the flowers that the United Kingdom buy are from abroad and it’s the Dutch. But there’s a chink in the Dutch armour and the Brits are fighting back. This documentary follows florist Geoff, who learned Dutch and buys directly at the flower auctions in Holland, passing on savings to his loyal customers back home. We meet a new generation of British florists including 21-year-old Jay, whose new business is booming because of a dedication to using quirky homegrown British buds for her luscious event displays. Florists like Jay are even helping keep the world famous flower market Covent Garden in cheeky rude health. And it’s not only them. Our high street supermarket giants have realized growing business opportunities, spotting how to encourage shoppers to fill their trollies with homegrown Sweet Williams sourced from local super grower Mark. And we reveal just how florist Rob did it to create his huge flower display outside London’s National Portrait Gallery. Our own humble British flowers and enterprising British florists are on a roll, the Dutch aren’t having it all their own way.

    The Dutch have the historical link with the tulip as being a highly prized commodity..but the competitive streak between the Brits and Holland keeps everyone on their toes..it is very stressful but the beauty of flowers and the emotional gasp of the amazing installation at the British art gallery took the cake for me..totally incredible..well done..thankyou for this doco..❤

    In Los Angeles there's a place called the flower market. It's a beautiful place. I had called in advance and asked for light blue flowers. Roses, daisy's whatever else they could do. Instead of a bachelorette party we did a bridesmaids make your own bouquet and help the flower girls with their baskets. Then they all chose a flower and contributed it to my bouquet. It was such an amazing experience with all of them. It was my second wedding so I wasn't gonna go nuts. I spent about $200 on flowers for 10 bridesmaids, 4 flower girls, my bouquet and the bouquet toss. Such an amazing day.

      Just like any country the Netherlands has it's own troubles, as a vacation any country is very different then living there.
      Also prices for everything went up alot(food, gas, electricity and more) while income is still the same.
      Another annoyance is that school degrees/study have to be European, or they most likely are not acknowledged and have to be earned again.
      I am saying this as very low income Dutch person, I don't know about mid or high end income.

    Flowers are not just for beauty for our eyes but our senses also go with it. What do all people do when they have a flower in hand, sniff. So I can't imagine roses with no scent to them.

      As a floral professional, I don’t understand why people think that all flowers have a scent because they don’t.
      I don’t understand where this came from. Like everything in nature, nothing is alike. Next time when you are around wildflowers growing naturally, smell them and you will see there is no scent. Also in landscapes the same holds true. One flower that has become extremely popular in landscaping are different types of daylilies. You see them everywhere in commercial spaces such as shopping areas. Try smelling them because they have no scent.

I have been in the floral industry for over 35 years and have walked both growing fields, wild Fields, green houses and much more. For instance , a daylily has no scent neither does an Asiatic Lilly, however an oriental lily does have a scent. As a result, I have had many weddings where the brides do not want scented flowers because it interferes with the dinner that is being served on the table. I know what I’m talking about.

      @@sreykimsear I am taking it personally, because I feel that my floral livelihood and extensive knowledge is being attacked. I too have been in many different parts of the world and believe me I can make you a huge list of flowers that have no scent. The flowers that have scent are for insects, but not all flowers are used by insects many are used by birds who have no sense of smell but have a sense of sight. All for pollination purposes. Sorry but almost 40 years in the floral business is being challenged and I can only take it personally.

It is a hard job yes, but we shouldn't use automation to the point that it takes every job just because it's easier if a robot does it. Not everyone can be a scientist or engineer, there has to be jobs for everyone.

Why would we in the EU pay more for lower quality stuff coming from outside of our single market? And if not the EU, who else will buy British exports?

      The thing is with 10 000 growers there is specialisation in supply. There are speacail companies for greenhouse building, destruction, floor equalization, water management, ferterlizer, transport, anything. Won't happen with 500 growers

      im a florist in the UK! it hit us quite hard. I know of so many shops that closed and friends in the industry being made redundant. there was a point when the world 'opened back up' there was a huge supply issue with high demand. prices got hiked and we really struggled getting flowers in to sell and the growers couldn't keep up with the demand after having to themselves cut down on staff and generally the amount they were growing. there was a point where the industry basically stopped specially with events being put on hold and hotels cutting budgets to keep their staff on... first thing they stopped was weekly flower contracts and a lot of florists rely on that business to pay their staff and keep the business open. it was a huge domino effect. I imagine growers had a lot of overstock being basically thrown away because nobody was buying it, they then would have cut back on the amount they were producing and that then caused the shortage for shops! I worked for an events florist that just did weddings and hotel work. i was there for about 3 years and had no choice but to leave because of covid as we had no work therefor I couldn't go to work to get a wage. it was tough but its bouncing back now thankfully :)

      You cannot fall asleep at the wheel being ahead of the game is what counts..but it has become so highly mechanised en masse..I must say I like to see flowers growing more naturally..but it seems that the $ speaks volumes..

    Let me guess.. the Latin American secret producer might be Colombia. Although, at the Brazilian State of São Paulo, by the town of Holambra, a Dutch descendant community is wholeheartedly engaged in the production of flowers. Once a year, they sponsor a state fair on flowers.

      The two largest producers are Columbia and Ecuador after the Netherlands. Their roses are 10 times better than Dutch roses or English roses. I’ve been in the industry my entire life so I know what I’m talking about.

    It's not Holland but Netherland. North and South Holland are 2 Dutch states.
    In North Holland you will find the Keukenhof with the fields of Tulips, which is actually a North Indian flower.

      The tulip comes from turkey and what is the royals symbol of the ottoman empire through the centuries.

    I like to point out some misinformation;
    1; the dutch growers has barely been subsidised by the government, exception to the rule are things like emission reducing tech, something all industries receive subsidies for. Most innovation comes from private investors, Wageningen University itself as example is for a big part privately subsidised
    2; Most flowers exported from the Netherlands are imports in the first place, from all around the globe, notable examples;
    Israel, Kenya, Ecuador, Italy, France, South Africa, Costa Rica and Chile.
    Often the dutch are however involved one way or another, albeit owning the farm, giving guidance or as mediators.

    • @jedimindtricksa
      @jedimindtricksa 2 роки тому

      The "early" tulips, let's say medio November are grown in the Netherlands, however the bulbs are imported from (dutch) farms in Chile or New Zealand.
      Fun fact; most bigger farms in the UK employ dutch operators
      Edit; There are loads of fun facts that could shatter presented facts within this documentary which I as dutch man can't talk about in order to not give away secrets of the trade, I let you in on one not so secret secret; the dutch are savy tradesmen

    To remain Relevant the British Flower Growing Industry needs to Compete on a Perceived Value basis based on Price and Quality; and Position itself in A Niche Market. In that way, You can still be Small but Uniquely Beautiful.

    I get it - criticise the competition, because the UK has not kept up. "Years behind" the Dutch, as one woman said. Holland has been super efficient and invested in the industry, the UK hasn't.
