As a South Carolina resident of 15yrs, yes the ☆ is a "You are here". It's not solely reserved for Interstate welcome signs, the blue SC Welcome signs can also be found along side US Highway stateline crossings. As far as I can recall from my personal travels as well as 15yrs crossing the SC/NC line multiple times a day for work on Interstates, US Highways, State Highways, State & County Roads the welcomes along State Highways, Roads, & County Roads range from mid-sized green DOT signs simply saying South Carolina with small DOT sign underneath of County name, the same thing just a bit smaller, to a small DOT sign appx the size of a corner street sign that simply reads Stateline
Kabir just came in clutch. About to have lunch in half an hour and was like "better start looking for a video now, so I don't struggle in the moment", and just saw this uploaded 2 mins ago
One thing about driving into Arizona, & it's been about 25-30 years since I was there, about 100 yards down the road from the Welcome to Arizona sign is an even larger sign which says, 'Now Entering the Nation of the Navajo'. So, yeah, talk about honouring the native heritage.
Well of course it depends where you’re entering Arizona from I have the feeling if Kyle took that picture of the Arizona sign he was likely entering from California on 1-10 (he’s from California) so of course no Navajo Nation sign would follow that one
“Pure Michigan” with its accompanying wave-like “M” is a reference to all the natural water locations and activities in the state. Folks in Flint might have a differing opinion on the “pureness” of the water, however.
When I was young Connecticut's sign when coming from New York said, "Welcome to Connecticut, Speeding Means Loss Of License". You can't much more welcoming than that.
I'm from Western Wisconsin and I was a bit disappointed that Minnesota and Wisconsin ranked so low. I thought for sure they would be in the top five. They are both huge and are made of stone and wood rather than simple road signs or billboards like most other states.
I felt the same way! I've crossed the Minnesota-Wisconsin border many times and always love seeing those signs. I didn't realize until later that we were among the only states to do that, and now every other normal sign looks so disappointing to me.
14:01 Every time I rewatch this video it burns me that Kyle, all due respect to him, left out a really important and COOL detail! Namely, the green of the hills and the blue of the lakewater are separated by negative space that spells out a lowercase “N.H.”! 😃 Also Kabir don’t worry about thinking Boston was a state for a split second. Lots of AMERICANS think Boston’s a state for crying out loud. 🙄 the easy way to remember it is that Boston is the city with a really simple name inside a state, Massachusetts, that has a really complicated name. 😆
The reason Colorado has the Colorful Colorado on the sign is due to the rich colors throughout the state. You have the blue skies, white snowcapped mountains, bright yellow sun, red soil, etc. It's a very colorful state when you look around.
The Minnesota one (12:59) is also colored to show the 3 main regions of the state - the pine forests in the northeast, the deciduous forests (and Mississippi River) in the center, and the prairies in the south and west.
The "Pure Michigan" slogan really doesn't work AT ALL. And considering their long-time problems with very impure water, it is just a joke to all who see it on a sign.
@@coyotelong4349 it is a good one. Too bad people don't study Latin anymore. But I always thought the "Look around you" motto came from Native Americans though?

The sign offered in the video was kind of like pointing out a random Hollywood city limit sign and ignoring the iconic sign on the hill above.
If there's one thing that I'm proud of about my home state, Mississippi, is it's musical, literary, and artistic contributions to the country and the world. So many of the legendary artists came from this place where the heat shimmers and is visible in the summertime and the cicadas announce the evening with their harsh songs. Blues came from the children of ex slaves, country from the poor whites, and rock n roll from the children of them both. My daddy was one of those kids, and my kids are carrying on the music.
The funny thing about Oregon's is only about 1/3 of the state is green. The eastern half is a cornucopia of browns. It's much more akin to Central Asia.

I'm from Montana and can confirm all of our signs are shot up and/or have stickers all over! It's a Montana thing! Basically all of the land you're near is either farmland or great hunting land, not government fields, so it's farmers' teenage kids using it for target practice, or hunters missing their shot. Also important to remember we're not a very busy state so you can find these signs on stretches of highway with maybe a few cars an hour on the weekend so it's not exactly dangerous to pull over and leave a sticker on the sign. I'm a Pennsylvanian now for the last 21 years but I'm a native Marylander. We Marylanders slap the flag on everything because we love it! I really think Maryland has the coolest looking state flag out of all 50 states.
I also like the Maryland state flag. It is pure heraldry. On the other hand, the flag of my state, Washington, is one of those boring seal-on-a-bedsheet designs that you see on so many state flags. The only good part is its color; no other state flag is green.
Welcome to Wild Wonderful West Virginia was the slogan from 1975 to 1991. The governor at that time removed it and that caused a big upset. Then later Governor Manchin put Open for Business on the welcome signs. And nobody liked it. So they had a special vote to either change it back to Welcome to Wild Wonderful West Virginia or come up with something else. Change it back won by a landslide. ❤
Realize till I saw this video that the West Virginia welcome Westview Nissan is actually pretty neat it depicts the new river bridge that’s why it has an arch in it and also the colorful background and the state flag
"Virginia is for Lovers" is the tourism and travel slogan of the U.S. commonwealth of Virginia. Used since 1969, it has become a well-recognized and often imitated part of American jargon. In 2012, Advertising Age called "Virginia is for Lovers" "one of the most iconic ad campaigns in the past 50 years." A team led by David N. Martin and George Woltz of Martin and Woltz Inc. of Richmond, Virginia created the slogan after winning the Virginia State Travel account in 1968. Originally, they had come up with history ads, "Virginia is for History Lovers"; beach ads, "Virginia is for Beach Lovers"; and mountain ads, "Virginia is for Mountain Lovers." This approach was eventually discarded as too limiting, and the qualifiers were dropped. Martin and Woltz Inc. eventually gained prominence and grew to become The Martin Agency. In 1969, the Virginia State Travel Service (now the Virginia Tourism Corporation) adopted the "Virginia is for Lovers" slogan and the first ad campaign using the tagline appeared in March 1969, in an issue of Modern Bride.”
I always hated "Virginia is for Lovers." Back when Virginia was run 100% by anti-gay Republicans who did all they could to make gay citizens third class citizens, gay residents were leaving the state in droves and it really hurt to see that "for lovers" slogan. It should have said "for hetero lovers only." Luckily those days are largely behind us now.

Another ones were "from Murphy to Manteo", the Old North State and "Land of the Longleaf Pine". I agree with the narrator that North Carolina's welcome sign has been used for a long time. As a native of the state, I wish that the state would add a slogan to the sign to "spiff" it up, but leave the flag as is. I personally like the old slogan Vacation Varietyland.

Hello fellow Oregonians! I love Oregon’s new welcome sign. And y’all are correct we do think it’s a pretty amazing place. Although I moved to Washington for a job and I love it here; Oregon is home 💚
I grew up in Oklahoma. The license plates and state welcome sign said, Oklahoma is OK, which is extremely accurate. I also lived in Arkansas for a long time and it truly is The Natural State. Now I live in New Mexico. Most people who haven’t lived here all their lives eventually call it The Land of Entrapment. The only negative here is that we don’t really have a Fall season. That’s my spiel.
My home state Alabama still has a few of the Alabama the Beautiful signs around. I do like them better than the current welcome signs. They are too boring.
Most of the Oregon signs are the Forest Green background, White state shape, & Forest Green text saying "Welcome To Oregon." At least taking I-5 through Washington & California. But cool to know some are getting updated. I think they'll stick with the simple one for Washington I-5 & I-205 since they're travelling on a bridge.
I have a friend from work who collects photos of state welcome signs. I actually have a few friends who are, like me, avid roadtrippers, but only 1 of them goes out of his way to snap shots of the welcome signs.
The Washington sign is in fact the same design they’ve been using since before I was born! I’ll in a few weeks! And I agree they need a new design! And since I’ve been to Idaho and Montana many times in my life I can also agree they probably need some updates as well! Especially the Idaho sign!
And we here in Minnesota now apparently allow tornadoes even in December! First time in our history actually having a tornado warning in December!! It’s been a weird night! lol
Fun fact a lot of the signs are blue because it is the easiest color for our eyes to see. Also kinda hate the pure Michigan sign, would’ve been better to use a white sign with blue font like in the commercials.
New Jersey's Nick name is The Garden State. Remember, most Gardens are left unattended, overgrown and stinky. Just like New Jersey. America's Armpit. But that only works for the Elizabeth and Newark areas. Southern NJ looks like the rich gardens. 😎👍
Seriously, I have to take offense of his dislike of Nebraskas sign.😉 (I grew up there) To take a page out of his book.... at 70 mph what difference does the font make as long as you can read it as you zoom by! And it's sign is the same as later ones he says he likes! Crazy guy! BUT I appreciate that he liked Utahs sign since I live there now.
New Hampshire used to have a much better sign, with an image of an ancient rock formation in the mountains there that looked like a facial profile and was sacred to some of the First Nations. Unfortunately, erosion took its toll, and after some time of propping the whole thing up, it came crashing down. So…erm…new image needed. Michigan’s old ‘The Great Lake State’ was much better too. Since the Great Lakes obviously haven’t moved I have no idea why it was changed to such a hideous moniker. I think Maine’s used to have a lobster on it but I haven’t been to the States in a while so can’t quite remember.
Best argument for not making Washington D.C. a state, having the 'Deathplace of Lincoln' on the state sign. I've noticed, going into Wales about the only thing you notice is the signs are written in Welsh.
I think at one time the Massachusetts welcome sign had The Bay State on it which was soooo much better then the 70's slogan of Make It In Massachusetts. That bombed big time due to the times. And the bird on the current sign is a chickadee, 'official' state bird.
Great video! I haven’t seen all of the state signs, until now. Tennessee is mine, coming in at 21. I was born in Maryland, the ugly flag LOL I lived in Florida for a lot of my life. I’ve never seen Maryland’s sign. Thanks, Kabir!

@@united8586 The cabin that is on the site where he was born is a replica. The one in Indiana, his boyhood home, is also a replica.
For some of us in Nebraska the slogan is actually, “Nebraska, where the east peters out”.
...and let's the west's peter in
I'd put Oregon on top, but I'm biased, I live in Oregon. Still, glad to see it so high on the list.
YOU ARE persistant! GOOD for you! 😁😷👣
(I mean Kabir...)
10:15 my theory on the montana sign being shot up is it being certain locals' way of signaling outsiders aren't welcome.
I live on the Colorado-New Mexico border. Love the signs
I live in the 4 corners i love my Utah and Arizona
As a Bay Stater (aka a massachusettsian), you’re nelcome any time!
Lincoln was born in KY, mostly raised in IN and moved as a teen to IL with his family before striking out on his own there. The claims are legit.
Virginia is for lovers slogan was originally "Virginia is for HORSE lovers" but they changed it to appear more cosmopolitan, by the way.
North Dakota has a very rich history:
1. Sitting Bull
2. Fort Abraham Lincoln-Custer
3. Lewis and Clark
4. Sakakawea
5. Josh Duhamel-LEGENDARY
🤣
Florida has new signs their large stone signs with a lighted sign on it that says welcome to Florida .
Vermont bans billboards so an understated welcome sign fits them.
I was wondering where he was going to place our wooden Colorado sign. Yeah I always thought how un-colorful it was for the name "Colorful Colorado".
That's the new I-5 from Cali sign. It's been like that for a couple years, idk about the Northern ones, haven't been up there in a while. 🥰
@@kelsqi-books4835 I must have missed it going by in April. I'll have to check it out!
I have a friend from work who collects photos of state welcome signs. I actually have a few friends who are, like me, avid roadtrippers, but only 1 of them goes out of his way to snap shots of the welcome signs.
11:49 Yeah Boston is not a state. Boston is a city in Massachusetts. It’s the same city where tea was thrown into the harbor.
It’s been a weird night! lol
Its pure michigan like Pure Water, talking about the pristine great lakes, the man doesnt even bother, its pretty clear what Michigan meant
Yay South Dakota!
Virginia is for lovers. ❤ I approve this message.
Kabir, hope you're planning to do Oversimplified's new The Pig War soon.
I love that Utah's letters look like rock formations too.
Goblin Valley, anyone?
Illinois did he not notice that the river divides the state and Lincoln's face
I like our Texas sign‼️💕
Arizona’s is among my favorites too just because we let our excellent flag do the work
Our sign is simple and unmissable, even cruising past at 70 mph
Fun fact a lot of the signs are blue because it is the easiest color for our eyes to see. Also kinda hate the pure Michigan sign, would’ve been better to use a white sign with blue font like in the commercials.
He's right about Texas!
New Jersey's Nick name is The Garden State. Remember, most Gardens are left unattended, overgrown and stinky. Just like New Jersey. America's Armpit. But that only works for the Elizabeth and Newark areas. Southern NJ looks like the rich gardens. 😎👍
I'm a Wisconsin native. Love those North Woods.
I don't think Kyle realizes the Illinois River going through the state that represents the second "I" is Lincoln's face in profile hahaha!
exactly , the river does not run through the eastern part of the state .
Best argument for not making Washington D.C. a state, having the 'Deathplace of Lincoln' on the state sign. I've noticed, going into Wales about the only thing you notice is the signs are written in Welsh.
That would be brutal 😅
The one for Illinois looks like Lincoln’s silhouette.
As a Montanan I have never seen a shot up welcome sign
I'm surprised New Mexico's sign doesn't have USA on it, they're the only state whose license plate does.
Montana loves their guns
Hi from South Dakota :)
Minnesota rocks!
the illinois river makes lincoln’s face
its just lincolns silhouette . the river does not run through the eastern part of the state .
Actually the majority of New York is farmland and forest.
Driving from NY to Michigan for work and literally passed the Welcome to Pennsylvania sign while watching this lol
I live in North Carolina
