  • Quick review of all 3 members of the Echo Shadow II family of rods. Which one will suit your needs? The 2100 is a great small water stick. The 3100 is the most popular of the line up and will cover the most broad range of standard trout fishing scenarios. The 4106 is your big water big fish stick that will have the back bone to handle the largest trout. Thanks for watching. Please feel free to drop a comment if there is a topic you would like me to discuss or if you just want to give me unsolicited life advice.

    Walked into a thrift shop recently and picked up a custom built 9' 5wt. for 8 bucks! That rod just kicked my 500 dollar St. Croix to the bench and backup status.😊

    Thanks for the in depth review. I notice a lot of people say the competition kit works with the 2wt. I'm sure the fighting butt and weights do. But can anyone confirm if the extensions work with the 2wt as well?

    Dude thank you for covering a lot of info, I really wanted to know if the comp kit works on the 2wt. You answered my question and I couldn’t find the answer on websites. Everything stated that the comp kit is for the 3wt and 4wt.

    If you're switching between nymphs and small streamers will the 3100 still work? It would be for rivers like the South Fork in Southern Colorado or maybe streams on occasion. The South Fork is probably a bit larger than the Costilla but not nearly as large as the Rio Grande.

      3100 will definitely fit the bill. I throw small streamers and dry dropper rigs on it all the time ! If you have the money though I’d go Shadow X.

      AboutTrout for streamer fishing do you take off euro leader and line and switch to 3 or 4 weigh forward line ?

    Did you try the competition kit (the extra 2 segments) with shadow x? I got the 10ft 3wt and would be nice to can extensive the lenght of the rod and don't have to buy another 10,6.

    Great video, my question is I do a lot of Stillwater fishing- lake fishing with indicators and beaded chronomid? Which Rod would you recommend the Shadow 2- 10 ft 6 4 wt or Shadow X 3 wt10 ft 6? I know they're designed for euro nymph fishing. And can they be cashed 40 feet with indicator? Love the design of the rod

    Have you ever Euro fished the San Juan Quality waters?
    I have been an indicator fly angler for many years. Used to fish the San Juan Quality waters 10 to 15 times per year, prior the pandemic. I primarily fished with very small midge imitations, sizes 22 to 26 with small split shot for weight. Sometimes red larvae in size 20 to 22 on longer curved hooks. One can catch nice size fish, 16 to 24”, even on size 26 midge pupae on these quality waters.
    Given this information, do you think a Euro angler could somehow catch fish using these rods and would a 3 or 4 weight be more preferable for a beginner on the San Juan Quality waters. Since it is hard to weight down the actual fly of a size 22 to 24 midge imitations would fishing with split shot above a two fly set up work just as well with these rods, once a person gets the hang of Euro type fishing?

      The San Juan is a great place to euro nymph and midge techniques can be adapted within the euro system. To my knowledge I am the only guide with a euro specially in the quality water. I do guide the technique regularly in the QW. I would love to get you out there and show you.

      Thank you for the quick reply. Perhaps I could get your email address or phone number so we can discuss a trip someday after I have resolved my dental procedures I am currently going through. I do not own a Euro rod, so a guided trip would have to include a Euro rod. Have not fished SJ since pandemic. I used to stay at Abes and eat at Sportsman’s Bar & Grill. Pandemic ruined that. It is a 4-hour drive from Santa Fe, so had to spend the night or spend a total of 8 hours driving and a very little time fishing.
      Since my pre-pandemic SJ days, I have been still water fishing Hopewell, Canjilon, Fenton, Santa Cruz, Morphy, and Monastery. Monastery and Morphy are still closed due to wildfires problems. All were one day fishing trips. All with in a two-hour drive.
      Still water I used a small cork indicator with a two fly set up. Using home tied, bead head, jig, barbless hooks. I like that set up because there is no slack between the fly and the cork indicator. Strikes are seen right away. I have had phenomenal days on a freshly stocked lake with that set up. That is what got me to thinking about Euro fishing techniques and a bead head point fly on the SJ.
      Due to Lake closers, seems like less stocking or perhaps bait fisherman cleaning out a lake pretty fast, I have been think more and more about the San Juan Quality Waters.

    Hey bud! Dig the review! I wanted to get into the euro nymphing scene and I will be primarily fishing the Rio out in NM. Would the 3wt 10ft be a better option over the 4wt? Thanks!

    • @AboutTrout
      @AboutTrout  6 років тому

      Rudy Gurule I have not. I’ve fished the 3100 Recon though, which is a fine rod. I have a 3100 ESN which is around the same price point as the H3 and I love it. For the money it’s hard to bet a shadow II though. Especially if you’re testing the waters.

    Bought this rod, took it out the very next day, broke and splintered at the second section from the bottom above the 3rd guide after 30-45 minutes of use. I’m currently working with my local fly shop and echos warranty dept. but it’s been a real painful process thus far. I realize this is the price we pay in this game but having this rod break on the very first use is just disappointing to say the least

    • @AboutTrout

      I hear you. There are many reasons rods can break. Sadly with Covid the supply chains are slow . I know echo will take care of you and get the situation figured out.

      UPDATE: Contacted echo warranty dept. and explained my frustration. They sent me a brand new shadow 2 free of charge that I received today! They also allowed me to keep the broken rod as spare parts for the new one! Very pleased with how they were willing to earn my trust back as a customer. Already eyeing the shadow x for this reason.

    Im on the fence between 3 and 4 wt. in the10ft configuration. I live in N. Central Ma. Mostly small streams and rivers. To balance these do you recommend a true to wt reel or a 4/5? And thank you so much for all your posts. This was especially good for me who had been tying euro lately but still clueless as to set up on a more economical friendly euro rig.

    • @AboutTrout

      Go 3wt. If you have money for an X I’d say 3106 (10.5 3wt) if you’re thinking Shadow 2 go with the 3100(10ft 3wt) the 4106 is clunkier in hand. The 3100 is perfect for small stream/river stuff with some back bone . Thanks for watching!

    • @AboutTrout
      @AboutTrout  6 років тому

      mike rapeer I thought you meant the rod. For a reel I’d look at the echo bravo in a 7/9 or a Landon liquid 2 or 3.5. All options mentioned are sub $150. Taos Fly Shop (my base of operations) can set you up. Please feel free to ask if I can help you in any other way.

    What’s the point of having 5 washers in the comp kit when you can only use 3 at a time? Am I missing something about attaching them?
